You have style.” Mrs. Loehmann said this to Iris Apfel the style icon, as she was perched on her high stool in her store. How would you feel if someone said that to you? Would it scar you for life and give you a complex, or would you be like Iris - continue to let your individuality shine in a world that is so homogenized despite others judgment? I feel like Iris on some level is my spirit animal. Her documentary, Iris is a must watch.

On to the dress: I love shirtdresses for their effortless vibe - especially, one with a tie-waist that enhances the flattering design of the dress. This Vince Camuto leopard print style is one of my favorite dresses sitting in my closet right now. It's full of sass without having to put much effort into it other than adding a little color punch in accessories, like a two-tone pink clutch, shoes and jewelry.

Gatsby Inspired Fashion

The hubby and I have been invited to a Great Gatsby themed party being held on the East Egg of Long Island that is swiftly approaching and I’m still very much undecided on what to wear. When you receive an amazingly well-produced Great Gatsby video invitation with the theme song “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody”, this leads me to believe that I must bring my A-game in the attire department. Knowing our friends, this will be one of the swankiest parties of the year. Now, I’m torn whether or not I want to embrace the full glamour of the era by wearing an all sequins gown or if I should go for a more shapeless loose-fitting fringe flapper-inspired style dress. Not only have I been pondering the outfit for a while now, but it’s been a back and forth on whether I want to wear a hat or a bedazzled headband with a feather in it, (which I’m leaning more on DIY’ing myself) and of course, the shoes! Aahhh, I hate not having a complete vision of my look yet! Whenever, I find myself in this conundrum, I put my mental outfit ideas to paper. 1. The sweetest feeling ever is when you spot the first sign of fall on an early morning walk at the park.

Have you ever been in a place when you feel for certain you've reached the end of your rope and miraculously, either someone you haven't heard from in a very long time happens to call or you get a text from someone who brings you the right cheer and lifts your spirit instantaneously? That's exactly what happened to me this past weekend. It was even better than a text - it was a weekend visit of a very dear friend spent together, that involved non-stop chatting from the moment she walked through my front door. We embarked on a shopping extravaganza and a culinary exploration through the city that involved lots of wine, champagne and cocktail sipping. We chatted up so much, at one point I got the coughs and could barely utter another word. That's how much catching up we did. Lots of laughing and some tears even. It was seriously one of life's delightful morsels worthy to go down in the books. I've relished that enjoyable memory all week. Hope you too, had a moment(s) in your week that carried you through it. Autumn Wreath DIY

The first impression of your home is just as important as your first interview or when meeting someone new. In an instant, your home's entrance or apartment front door causes one to form an opinion about those who live there. I take pride in the appearance of my home seriously no matter whether I live in a house or a rental. So normally, my front door is always adorned with a wreath of sorts, but surprisingly, it's been a long while since I've had a real autumn wreath that truly exudes the vibrant hues of fall. The last couple of seasons, I had a summer one that served double-duty straight till it was time to switch to my winter one. I've never been able to bring myself to purchase an already made store bought one, especially when most of them are usually very unbecoming (with the exception of this one). I'm pretty sure it's partly because of their exorbitant prices which are not warranted, considering how outdated the majority of them out there look. This year, I wanted to have a wreath that a) makes our front door stand out from the uniformity of everyone else's door on our floor, b) reflects the colorful flair of our home's mood, and c) gives us and our guests an exuberant welcome! So, I decided to embellish one that I happened to find about two weeks ago at one of my local craft stores at a deeply discounted price too good to pass up.

This was by far one of the easiest and quickest DIYs yet! From start to finish, my Autumn wreath took me about 10 minutes. Here's what I used:

I basically just nestled the feathers in between the leaves in the empty areas of the wreath, and twisted their wire stems around the twigs of the wreath. With each addition of filler, I stepped back to make sure that things were evenly distributed and looked good visually. To finish it off, I inserted a few clippings of sage from my herb garden for an earthy touch of life and great aroma. I'm so excited that I now have a proper fall wreath to don my door for years to come.

6 Fall Favorites For The Home

1. FAUX FUR PILLOWS: Personally, I can't think of anything that screams cozy comfort more than several scattered faux fur pillows around the home during the cooler seasons. This statement-making faux fur foxy pillow cover is not only comfortable for curling up with, but its ombre pattern makes it perfect to add a touch of rosy brightness against the darker palettes typical of Fall and Winter. Imagine the immediate luxe update your home would get, just by covering your pillows with this sumptuously soft cover.

Our fall weather isn't joking around in these parts. For a moment there, the temperature had us thinking that maybe this year's sunny/warmer days were going to linger on and gradually transition into cooler crisp temps as the leaves began to reveal their ethereal fall hues. Psych! Next thing you know, skies were gray for days, water clouds began to loom over us, rain began to fall and the temp dropped from the 70s to low-50s in no time. Interestingly enough, my internal clock seems to have simultaneously made the switch going from: 'aw, I miss my summer days of sitting outside...' to suddenly wanting to be in the kitchen (which barely saw me all summer) baking pies and pumpkin bread - to having the sudden urge to sip on chai tea latte and finishing my fall prep for the season.

2. LAMPS: No room is complete without proper lighting and sadly, I've been without bedside lamps for a year now since one of my old lamps broke while moving. I've just not been able to find the right style that truly speaks to us yet.  All of the lamps I've been scrolling through online or looking at in the stores haven't really made me/us say,'these are the ones!                      However, the simple geometric/elegant ring-like shape of this table lamp has it in the running   (after changing the lampshades on them, naturally) among these ones: One // Two // Three // Four.

3. BARWARE ESSENTIAL: Every time I reach for my basic stainless steel cocktail shaker, it always reminds me of how boring my bar looks with it! Though practical, I still yearn for one that reflects our style and stands out in the crowd amongst the bottles on the bar, adding that touch of elegance to the bar cart that it deserves. However, one of the ones that have caught my eye besides these following options: One // Two // Three // Four, is a perfect mix of style in adding depth and glam to our barware essenstials.

4. CANDLES: I'm beyond obsessed with candles - so naturally, my home signature scent changes with each season. And this fall/winter season I'm all about the Teakwood & Tobacco scent. But if you're like a friend of mine who fears setting your home on fire, The diffuser version is a perfect alternative.

5. VELOUR BEDSKIRT: Since I'm not ready to upgrade my bed yet to either this one here, here and here, I have to rely on bed skirts to cover my bed frame for a tailored look. It's a toss up between this Juicy Couture velour option or this hotel-inspired style bed skirt. Also sort of liking these: One // Two // Three. I really wish this was still available from pottery barn.

6. COLORFUL VASES: Although I love my fall colors, I still like to incorporate a cheerie accessory such as a vibrant vase in my fall decor to bring life to my space after those beautiful autumn colors fade away to give the winter landscape (that comes with dark skies) its turn to shine.

I scored this dress several years back at one of the most intimately small and well-curated vintage shops in town. The satin-textured pleated chiffon fabric combined with its feminine silhouette was what made this dress leap off the rack as soon as I entered the store. Every spring it's the first dress that reemerges from hibernation back into my closet. The lightweight semi-cheer material made it the perfect choice for exploring Hilton Head, South Carolina on an extremely hot day this past spring. I decided to anchor its vintage style with a leopard print calf hair belt and snakeskin peep-toe wedges for a more modernized chic vibe.

6 Best Perennials To Grow In The Fall

While I may get excited about preparing the interiors of my home for the cozy fall season, what really fills me with glee and sends me into total fall mania, is walking through a nursery during this time of year to pick out my favorite fall foliage to dress up my outdoor space. In every place that I have lived, no matter whether I had an outdoor space or not, I always found a way to make the exterior as seasonally welcoming as the interior by using appropriate decorations - such as hanging a wreath on the front door to placing a cheerie autumnal mat at the front door or, flanking the entrance with a couple of vibrant mums. Gratefully, in my current place, I do have ample outdoor space that I get to dress up this year and I can't wait to get it all done. Given my busy schedule and a terrace where only container gardening is possible, I opt for low maintenance/easy to care plants that pack high visual impact. Not only will these 6 perennials of choice do just that, but they'll also inject a little something 'unexpected' alongside your typical fall garden blooms.

1. Pansies: Are what I call a two-fers because when planted in the fall they will continue to grow and bloom, providing you with eight months of color through the winter into spring. I found this out last year from one of the guys at my local nursery. To me, that's a win win. Hardy, full sun, well draining soil, 1 inch of water per week after initial planting. (Zone 6)

2. Rosemary: This most useful culinary staple is one of those aromatic herbs that makes a beautiful ornamental plant, as well as add contrast to the garden. Full sun, well-drained soil, drought tolerant. (Zones 7-10)

3. Mint: This refreshing herb is one of the easiest non-fussy plants you can grow with very minimal maintenance that easily transfers from garden to kitchen. Perfect for container gardening in order to keep its aggressive nature in check, and will provide an abundance of mint. Prefers cool, moist soil, partial shade, sun. (Zones 3 - 10)

4. Leadplant: I love the unexpected touch of this ground cover. Its starry flowers makes it an ideal eye-catching variety to blend in with all of the common autumn colors. Bonus: it blooms twice in the fall (blue flowers with leaves that change to that beautiful autumnal red), and it attracts butterflies. Full sun (makes it spread faster) or shade, drought tolerant, well-draining soil. (Zones 5-9)

5. Thyme: Is another one of the easiest perennials to grow. With its little lavender flowers, it's as lovely as it is fragrant - filling your garden with a delicate aroma amidst the warm hues of the season. Full sun, light well-draining soil, (Zones 5-9)

6. Mums: Better known as Chrysanthemums. No fall planting would be complete without what I like to think of as the crowning jewel of the season. I love the high impact of this vibrant plant. Hardy, full sun to partial shade, moist, well-draining soil. (Zones 3-9)

A Quick Glance Back At Our Summer 2015

1. A day spent at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

It's hard to believe that summer has flown by so fast. They say time flies when you're having fun - they're not kidding! This summer sure was delightfully fun and very eventful to say the least. It was so pleasurable {probably because I intended for it to be so} that for the first time, I actually feel sad that it ended so quickly. We explored new places, spent more time outdoors, ate at new (to us) restaurants that are now some of our favorite spots - made a few new connections, and savored many dinners al fresco on our terrace. What I'm most grateful for are the fond memories created that I know we'll reminisce about for a long time to come, despite battling this unexpected horrid flu that sprung up on me since our return from vacation this week. I'm hoping reliving our summer through a recap of a few photos will help me feel better.

2. An incredibly memorable pre-anniversary broadway show.

3. Time well spent in the outdoors picnicking in Central Park.

4. Summer jazz on the lawn at the mansion.

5. Relished many breezy summer afternoons at side walk cafes.

An incredible shot the hubby captured right from our stateroom as we sailed away from Manhattan at dusk.

Boston, MA - where we strolled the streets and explored South Boston, a part of the city that we hadn't ventured around in during our past visits. We dined on some oysters and sipped some wine at one of downtown's favorite seafood/oyster bar spots called Row34.

Portland, Maine - story related: "has 65 historical lighthouses still standing and spread out along 5,000 miles of coastline, inlets and islands, Maine is commonly referred to as The Lighthouse State. These lighthouses have acted as beacons of light for sailors for hundreds of years, guiding sailors and fishermen safely into harbors along the rocky Maine coastline. Today, lighthouses are an important part of Maine's history."

Halifax, NS, Canada: this small town with a population of 400,000 is mainly a university town that is famous for having the most bars and pubs per capita in North America, but is also home to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic where some of the most significant artifacts and records to Titanic can be found. It is one interesting museum and I would say, a must-visit. Most things to do and see are in their downtown area, which are all reachable on foot. It's a very friendly city as we always have found with all of Canada. It was unusually hot at this time of year (September) with temperatures ranging to 80 degrees+ which we were told was 10 degrees higher than usual. This of course blew me right into Sugah (similar to cold stone here in the states) to grab an ice cream cone.

Saint John New Brunswick, Canada: population of 75,000 and yet is considered the largest city in New Brunswick, it's also known as the Fundy City due to its location on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy at the mouth of the Saint John River, as well as being the only city on the bay and home to the world highest tides up to 50 feet high.

One of the main attractions to visit is the famous Reversing Falls Rapids, where the Bay of Fundy forces the St. John River to reverse direction and flow upstream. An attraction that you may or may not get to experience depending on the time of day you visit as it only happens during high tide or low tide over a 6 hour period. And as you can see, we missed it. :( When there - visit Fallsview Park, it is said to be the best vantage point to see the rapids.

Another pride and joy of the Canadian people in Halifax, is their city market - being the oldest farmer's market dating back to 1876...

Interestingly, not only do they sell poutine fries, but their McDonald's golden M has a maple leaf in the center.

6 Easy Steps To Fall Prep At Home

Yesterday, the hubby and I arrived home from our end of summer vacation. As soon as we stepped out of the taxi at the front of our building, we were greeted by the chilly air that says, 'Autumn is indeed here.' This quickly shifted my mind from the joy of vacation to the excitement of prepping my home for fall - starting with the interior, first. I keep things very simple by following these 6 basic steps to help me swiftly transform my place (aside from introducing seasonal flower arrangements peppered throughout the home) into the perfect stylish autumn space all season long: (1) swap out my light cotton sheets to heavier duvets, (2) change summery pastel colored pillows to snug plush Pillows, (3) bring out the faux fur throws on the foot of the bed and sofa, (4) replace the summer's door wreath to a more appropriate one for fall, (5) accent the space with a few fall accessories, and last but not least, (6) I can't think of a quicker way to bring in the aroma of the season other than candles, like autumn noir, Japanese black currant...ahh, feeling all cozied up in here already.

Mozzarella & Tomato Pizza

One of my most cherished memories and the only after school activity I had in high school and looked forward to almost every day was stopping at the corner pizzeria for a hot slice of $1.25 NY cheesy pizza served on a white flimsy paper plate that oozed with oil, which would inevitably run down my arm as I ate it on my way home. It was truly heaven in my mouth! Recently, to satiate that sudden craving, I decided to make my own simple tasty version at home. It's one of those quick fool-proof no-fuss recipes that is perfect to make and serve on those casual nights when someone wants to stop by or just when having a few girlfriends over.

Ingredients {makes 20 small size slices}

2 Whole grain flat bread
1lb. fresh mozzarella cheese log, sliced
Homemade tomato sauce (or one 25oz. jar of store bought tomato sauce)
Handful of fresh basil
2 tomatoes sliced
2 tbsp. olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Preheat oven to 450
Spread the tomato sauce evenly over flat bread.
Arrange the tomatoes, mozzarella and basil evenly over the tomato sauce.
Drizzle with a little bit of olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.
Bake until the cheese is bubbly and the edges are golden brown, 15 minutes.
Cut into individual pieces and serve.

1. This look reminds me of how much I need to return to my old color palate back in the 90's. Soothing, yet warm.

At first, I was staunchly holding my ground from getting on board with the idea that Labor Day is the end of summer. Then this past Tuesday when it seemed to have suddenly gotten real dark by 6:30 pm - that's when I reluctantly resolved in my heart to make peace with the thought that fall is imminent. Leaving for vacation this weekend couldn't come at a better time - a perfect way to end summer with a bang and soften my mourning of the loss of entertaining al fresco under twinkly lights on breezy summer nights. On another note: I'm so glad that ABC network and Netflix ironed out their differences and finally released the last season of Revenge. We have been binge watching those episodes, which by the way has my head spinning with all the backstabbing twists of the characters. But really, we all should have a Nolan (aka Gabriel Manan) in our lives. I may not be fully ready for fall, but I certainly am ready for several of my favorite fall shows to come back - starting with the Ladies of London to million dollar listing: Los Angeles.

I always say that even if I were in a wheel chair, you'd still find me in high heels. In fact, I think that's when I would need to ramp up my high heel game so as to help me from slipping into a defeatist mental state. I'm all for a statement fringe fashion accent piece (as can be seen here, here, here and here) every now and then depending on where my mood takes me, which is what excites me about this fall's fringe craze trend. There's just something about the free-spirited bohemian chic cool vibe that I love. In my book, detail is everything, so I'm naturally drawn to this one piece for the instant edge factor that it will give any look. Grateful Moments

1. The flower display of the moment in our entryway.

Tomorrow we're attending a funeral service of a good friend's dad, so it's really going to be a mournful weekend as he was one the nicest, kindest men I knew growing up. And having to face my friend under those circumstances for the first time after not seeing her for over a good 10 years makes me feel anxious. So for those of you who might be dealing with the same situation, know that you are not alone and I send my prayers and condolence. But for those with perfect health and a good weekend planned, be grateful for those sweet moments while the time is favorable.

Comfortably Casual Cut-Offs At The Brooklyn Botanical Garden

Around here, we ardently believe in the importance and the power of spending just as much time in taking a respite as we spend working and socializing. It's this tenet that inspired us to spend half a day exploring almost every corner, tree, and flower of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden last weekend. Some of you might have gotten a sneak peek here. This was my first time to visit the garden and it was the perfect escape that we needed. Being cocooned in this urban sanctuary strewn with more than 12,000 species of plants and trees on a hot humid summer day made us feel as if we were in a far away place from this "concrete jungle of NYC". The magnificent, colorful flowers and flowering shrubs, trees and their strong fragrance provided us with a spectacular treat for the nostrils and boosted our well-being. For us, living a happier life means taking time to stop and enjoy every moment that we get. Never underestimate the power of a respite.

Marvelous Monday Finds: Hi-Top Wedge Sneakers

I didn't own a pair of sneakers until I was in High School, and that was solely because it was mandatory to wear them in my gym class - which tormented my soul for I've always found sneakers to be unattractive as they make my walk feel less graceful - so every time I had to change into them my morale went down . I of course, didn't have a clue about the importance of buying proper fitting sneakers nor could this little orphan's budget afford the most desired/famous brands, like Adidas, Nike, Jordan's or PUMA that students in my school were fighting over and literally shooting each other for. So I settled for a no-namer pair similar to this one and called it a day. Which worked out to my benefit as I didn't have to worry about being jumped for a pair of sneakers. You want my low riding gremlins? Please take'em! As affordable and cute as Keds are (really liking this one here), they were too flat for me. My height complex wouldn't allow me to be so low to the ground, though my high school nickname "shorty" finally grew on me by my junior year. Happy Friday! Every once in a while I get these weeks where things just work. I'm not sure if it was because there was a good mix of work and fun leisurely time, including a rooftop fashion show event. Each day felt productive and fulfilling and it seems like this great momentum is going to run right into the weekend with an invite to a long time friend's new house out on Long Island. Happy weekend!

Gold Nailhead IKEA Dresser Makeover {Before + After}

One of the downsides to renting is the relinquishing of good quality furniture. When you move from a home that you owned (which we've done twice) to going back to a rental in an attempt to live a simpler unencumbered life, you probably have what's believed to be those "lifetime pieces", which is furniture you purchased with the intent of never getting rid of. Forgetting the square footage of rental spaces and the pitfalls of moving, you might be gung-ho on keeping those good quality pieces, but soon, invariably you come to two realizations: 1) those beloved pieces can't seem to fit anywhere in your new space, and 2) after a couple of moves watching your stuff getting banged up by careless movers, you can't help but resort to buying some pieces of furniture not so much for their quality but more for their functionality. And that's when IKEA becomes the favorite weekend excursion in exchange of puttering around in the garden on the weekends.

That said, I have to say that though IKEA is known for making inexpensive furniture, the hubby and I have actually had great experience with the durability of their bookshelves and chest of drawers. They surprisingly have endured for years even after putting them through several arduous moves. Of course being of the mindset that everything has greater potential, I look at IKEA furniture as a blank slate waiting to be transformed. So whenever I browse their store for a specific item, I always already envision the piece not as it currently is but as how it's going to look. Essentially, you can say that I view their furniture as I would couscous or quinoa (which by the way have you tried this recipe yet?) - a blank canvas that can be dressed and flavored any way you wish. For example, like our office bookshelves here and here, and now with their HEMNES chest of drawers. Thanks to the pairing of some sleek geometric gold knobs from Anthropologie (in exchange for its original tiny black pull knobs) to the studded gold nailhead trim detail, this plain unassuming chest of drawers went from a barely noticed piece to a more sophisticated timeless one that now glistens. I can't stop staring and smiling every time I use it. It's become a special piece other than a place where it accommodates my necessary items.

Gold Upholstery Nailhead Trim // Tack Lifter // Tack Hammer and of course the Chest Of Drawers

With all my nailhead projects, I always opt for the nailhead trim variety instead of individual nails as I find it less time consuming and easier to visually space/guide the nails in a straight shot - only having to apply a nail in every 5th hole. Beware: every now and then, you'll find that one pesky uncooperative little nail will insist on going in crooked/bent no matter how precise your aim is at tacking it in. This handy dandy tack lifter is tiny enough to remove it without scuffing your furniture as opposed to using the nail remover of a regular sized hammer. However, a better suited item for this job is a rubber mallet as it won't damage the surrounding wood when you do miss that shot. Speaking from experience. Here are the steps on how-to go about this project:

First Step: Make sure to wear gloves before handling the nailhead trim to protect your hands from tiny little cuts once you unravel it out of its packaging.

Second Step: Measure how long a piece you'll need for each area of the dresser where you're going to position the trim. Then cut all the pieces you will need - using the first cut piece as your guide. Then straighten each piece as much as possible before placing it onto your furniture. It ensures for a seamless and quick application.

Third Step: Start nailing trim from the top down while eyeing or have a friend or your better half help you keep a straight line down as you tack in each 5th nail in the holes.

Fourth Step: Once all completed, give yourself a big pat on the back for your ingenuity as you sit back and admire your beautiful work.

I'm still debating whether or not I want to top off the legs with a band of gold paint 3 inches up from the floor. Hmmm...we shall see.

70's Throwback Retro + Fringe Top

We definitely have been in full summer mode around here trying to not let the season pass us by without getting the most out of what it offers - fun outdoor exploring. So we've been spending our afternoons engaging in different activities throughout the city, like enjoying a special jazz event at the Morris-Jumel Mansion, the oldest land marked mansion in Manhattan. We spent an entire afternoon there comfortably nestled in our lounge chairs sitting on a steep grassy hill listening to the beautiful sound of jazz with an occasional reading of some dramatic poetry in between each performance. As it got later in the afternoon, with the rays of sunlight streaming through the towering trees rustling above, parents slowly started to pour in with their small children and soon we had a flock of them playing, conversing and dancing all around us. At one point, I even ended up getting a hug from one little girl...cutest ever. I must say that moment sure transferred us to a time when neighbors and families spent their late afternoons in the outdoors enjoying each other's company. This particular summer experience makes for a memorable day in the books. It was great fun!
