We are allowed to bring family members or friends to this, if we wish.
We dedicate one morning and deliver in "car pools". After a morning of hard work and some bonding (because you really do bond doing something like this) our President treats us all to lunch out. As an extra treat, he puts a $10 gift certificate to a popular coffee shop on each person's plate.

I don't think we'll ever go back to a traditional Christmas party. We all get so much out of this and our children get to see us with our colleagues in a positive and giving atmosphere.

-Details-

Families in need sign up with the Lions Club and give their particulars to them, i.e., names and addresses, how many are in their household, and how many of that are children.

A set of volunteers go round and pick up donated food and gifts from local businesses and individuals (we did that last year), and brings it to the Lions Club.

The Lions Club puts together goodie hampers that include a complete Christmas dinner with enough food for all the people in that household. Then boxes are packed to include something for each child in the household.

On a designated day all of the food and gifts are delivered to the families or individuals. We get a piece of paper with the recipient's last name, their address, and their assigned number on it. We load up the corresponding numbered boxes and we deliver them all to that address. Sometimes there is a lot that goes to one family and sometimes just a box or two; it all depends on the individual need.

Some of the poverty we have seen right in our own neighborhood is heartbreaking. Sometimes we deliver to an apparent well-to-do home, but we try not to judge or show surprise, because we just don't know their particular situation.

We work in teams of two or three people and when we drop the hampers off, we wear Santa hats. As we are leaving, we smile and say "Merry Christmas" to them. Sometimes they are almost too stunned to reply. I am sure they were not expecting that sort of generosity. I have seen others moved to tears.

It is a nice way to spend a morning and it's even better when you bring your children. The comments and observations the kids make and the awareness that you bring to them (and yourself) is priceless.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's another way to show your employees that their good deeds have been noticed...

You can give them a recognition certificate detailing their generosity by using our ebook - 40 Recognition Certificates -.

Santa's elves can keep it and treasure it forever. The great news is, it only costs you a piece of paper. And, these colorful certificates can be printed over and over... for years.

Customize the certificates with employees' names. Simply type in the recipient's name in the space provided and print. Then you can roll it up and tie it with a festive ribbon.

This ebook is part of the Employee Morale Secrets - Power Pack of employee morale books.

Learn what the other books are and see all the details at:
http://www.confidencecenter.com/prod23.htm

Answer to This Weeks Trivia Question

Q.
This is an excellent book that is full of examples that promote thoughtful application of the ideas to your own company.

“If we tell coworkers how to do their jobs, we are essentially limiting
their options and stifling their initiative,” writes Cohen. “We’re not
leading.

Questions aren’t just about not knowing the answers -- they
lead to fresh ideas, committed action, and the creation of a new rank
of leaders.”

The best part, it's an -easy read-. Written in a conversational tone, it's packed full of interesting scenarios from lots of different types of companies. You will be surprised at how you can become a much more effective leader by asking the right questions... and Gary Cohen, in his book, Just Ask Leadership, shows you exactly how.

It's so amazing that this information is available to you for only a few dollars! Click on the book at the top of this post or in our book list on the right.

Not convinced? Here are lots more details about the book.

As leaders advance, they tend to ask fewer questions and provide more answers. But according to entrepreneur and executive coach Gary Cohen, this is precisely the wrong approach. Here's why...

Based on interviews with nearly 100 leaders, including Fortune 500 CEOs, small business owners, military commanders, and heads of nonprofits– as well as his own business experience, having grown ACI Telecentrics from two employees to 2,200– Cohen discovered that one of the keys to leadership success lies in asking questions.

In his new book, JUST ASK LEADERSHIP: Why Great Managers Always Ask the Right Questions (McGraw Hill/September 2009), he explains how CEOs, managers, and supervisors alike can learn to ask the right questions in the right contexts– enabling individuals and organizations to thrive.

“Leadership is about allowing others the chance to flourish,” writes Cohen. “And you do that by asking questions.” This empowers coworkers to find solutions, embrace responsibility, and become accountable. Moreover, it opens the door to greater productivity and creativity. Indeed, more than ever before, leaders can’t know everything. By seeking others’ input, they can inspire powerful and positive change.

JUST ASK LEADERSHIP details specific questions to pose in particular situations while also explaining how to create a culture of question-based leadership. Cohen addresses five critical areas:

Improve Vision – Gaining Insight from All Levels of the Organization Vision starts with an awareness of values. Questions can illuminate the values of both the leader and the organization. This, in turn, will enable good choices with regard to interacting with customers, hiring new employees, setting goals, and succession planning. Vision is also the bridge to the future. “Climb to the top of the mast and scan the sea for opportunities and threats,” writes Cohen. “Then ask forward-leaning questions that others may be reluctant to voice.”

Ensure Accountability – Increasing Team and Organization-Wide Performance Having coworkers solve their own problems is critical to building their accountability, says Cohen. Leaders must encourage people to act and, provided good-faith action is taken, failure must be used as an opportunity for learning, not an excuse for punishment. JUST ASK LEADERSHIP reveals how to give employees maximum latitude, thereby encouraging them to take initiative and be increasingly capable of taking on more challenging work.

Build Unity and Cooperation – Creating a Culture of Trust To unify an organization made up of vastly different individuals, leaders must invite coworkers to share their opinions and listen well to their input. This requires asking good questions– those that house the potential for growth and collaboration– not “gotcha” questions. Cohen shows how to move coworkers forward when they are “stuck,” helping them to reach their own solutions, and also addresses such issues as using the right tone, how to be more present in conversations and improve listening, and why it is critical to show respect for the input one receives.

Create Better Decisions – Getting the Right Answers by Asking the Right Questions
Most leaders make too many decisions, says Cohen. “If you don’t routinely ask, ‘whose decision is it?’ you’ll fall into the trap of doing others’ work,” he writes. The best decisions are often made by those down the chain of command, not up. JUST ASK LEADERSHIP details how to direct decision making to the appropriate party, seek clarification, and provide solutions when appropriate.

Motivate to Action – Asking for Success “Because I said so,” is not a phrase that will inspire coworkers. JUST ASK LEADERSHIP offers insights into how to motivate people by building rapport, customizing incentives, and instilling respect. Cohen’s tactics include creating a sense of urgency, appealing to people’s desire to be remembered, finding new points of leverage, and energizing coworkers by using shared responses– such as asking a group to say, “Agree,” after consensus is reached.

Throughout the book, Cohen illustrates his insights with stories from some of the country’s best leaders. For example, he describes how Mike Harper, former CEO of ConAgra, asked the quality control inspectors on his bacon packaging line what would happen if they didn’t do their jobs well. The inspectors played out scenarios including customers becoming ill, potential lawsuits, and bad word of mouth. So when Harper then asked, “You know you have the most important job in the plant, right?” these inspectors knew he meant it. Harper’s questions ensured that his coworkers knew the significance of their work.

JUST ASK LEADERSHIP gives leaders at all levels the tools they need to empower and motivate coworkers by asking the right questions, the right way.

Treat those you communicate with by using this little trick. You can change an entire meaning and feeling of a statement magically. However, you don't need potions or spells for this trick. All you need to do is change "should have" into "could have".

What difference does that make?

Using the words "should have" creates condemnation and guilt for something that has already been done and cannot be changed. Once you start using "should have", people tend to stop listening to you.

On the other hand, the phrase "could have" does not condemn anyone. Using these words let someone know he or she had a choice, and this experience then becomes a lesson for making better choices in the future.

For example, a negative statement would be, "You should have worked on that management report instead of filing papers." Contrast this with, "You could have worked on that management report instead of filing papers." The point is made without the sting.

It can be scary when you realize your employees may not have the communication skills they need. This is so important, that is why we have made "Magic Words that Change Negative into Positive" one of the lessons in the Employee Success Toolkit.

The Employee Success Toolkit is a professional development course for employees in 13
easy-to-follow lessons. What two countries contain Sierra Nevada mountains?

(Answer at the end of this newsletter.)

Employee Morale
Pumpkin Fun

Submitted by a loyal subscriber

Here's a fun and very inexpensive idea I found on the Internet a couple of years ago. I make candy filled orange crepe paper pumpkins for everyone in our small office (10).

I take orange crepe paper and cut it into large circles. Then I fill the middle of each circle with small candies. I pull the circle edges up (like a sack) and twist. I tie it off with brown floral twine and cut off the excess crepe paper. Then I completely wrap the "stump" with the remaining twine, tie it off and leave a bit of it to look like vines.

The whole process takes me about an hour. Everyone loves their treat. It's amazing how easy it easy to make someone smile.

The
haunting truth is – there are many activities (like the one above) that you can do for little or no
money, and many take as little time as 10 minutes.

Our eBook, - 101 Low Cost Morale Boosters that Energize Employees - is unique because it contains successful morale boosting activities which were contributed by supervisors and managers.

This ebook is part of the Employee Morale Secrets - Power Pack of employee morale books.

Learn what the other books are and see all the details at:
http://www.confidencecenter.com/prod23.htm
