Web design trends keep changing every year. Adding on the prevalent design and working out some new innovation is the need of the hour. Though some of the web design trends being followed in 2011 will be carried over, new additions are in the offering. Below are listed some of the web design trends that will gain popularity in 2012.

1) Getting mobile compatible

Over the last few years, minimalistic designs have gained immense popularity. This trend is expected to be carried over to 2012. The findings of a research study conducted reveled that over 1/5th of the web searches intended to be carried out will be done through mobile devices this year. Making the websites mobile compatible is the need of the hour and will help bring exponential growth in business.

2) Demise of Flash and emergence of HTML5

Flash used to be extremely popular till late. Adobe recently announced its policy changes that will have a significant effect on usage of flash, when it comes to mobile web use. Keeping these changes in mind, websites have started switching over to CSS3, JQuery and HTML5.

The interactivity of flash has no equals though, but 2012 will still see emergence of CSS3, JQuery and HTML5. Real time communication and multimedia support are some of the innovative features of the emerging technology that will propel its growth in 2012.

3) Emergence of 3D technology

Visually rich applications appeal to all. 2012 will see emergence of 3D technology thereby making the desktop more attractive. Increasing number of websites is working on devising 3D effects ranging from shadows to textures. Visually interactive applications are in the pipeline and 2012 will see emergence of some of these. This can be in form of graphics and interactive layouts that is sure to take web design trends to a higher level.

4) Interactive Typography

Use of creative fonts is being discussed in business circles and many websites are in the process of mixing fonts to come up with a masterpiece that is sure to make web more interactive. CSS3 has come as a boon in this endeavor of making web interactive. It allows free typography making the work of designers easy. Expect to see interactive typography techniques in 2012.

5) Making it big

Designers are thinking differently. Expect to see innovative headings, huge icons and designer logos. The idea is to make a lasting impression on the visitor. Creating an impression with the user seems to rule the mind of the web designers.

6) Interactive additions

Interactive additions in form of modal window are in the offering. This helps in adding inputs without the need of leaving the page. Login boxes and registration screens are sure to benefit from this innovative addition. This will not only save precious time of the users but will also ensure that web gets a creative look.

7) Hybrid layouts

2012 will see the use of hybrid layout technology. In this some aspects as text will be of fixed width making the other elements fluid. This is sure to give the screen a comprehensive look, without any inch of the monitor being wasted. Hybrid layouts will give the web a distinct character and make the web livelier.

8) Bright colors and fluid backgrounds

White or black backgrounds will be a talk of the past. Expect to see expandable backgrounds with bright colors. Bright colors will not only add life to the web but will also give the web world a raw an innovative look.

9) Compact information

Single page layout will be a great addition in 2012. All the required information will be compacted in a single page layout giving the web, an aesthetic touch. Precious time of the web user will be saved, as all the essential information will be available in a single page.

10) Social media

Social media sites as Facebook and Twitter will see increased presence on all web formats in 2012. This will not only make sharing information easier but will also bring increased web traffic to the site.

7 Deadly Sins of Website Design

Deciding your small business would benefit by having its own website is the easy part. The tough part is avoiding the nasty pitfalls that make many websites money losers, instead of money makers.
Is your website driving away customers? What factors would drive away site visitors fast? How do you make it more successful?

Those are some of the most common questions asked by website owners.
Creating the perfect website for your needs doesn’t require you to be the best artist or even the best coder. It only requires you to learn and understand some common mistakes website owners make.

If you’re committing these site development sins, it could be costing you more than you know.

1. Website Sin #1 – Cluttered Design

You can’t be all things to all people. Decide what content will go on the site and organize it in a clean and logical manner. You should be able to look at the home page of any site and figure out what the site is about in less than four seconds. If you can’t, the site is a failure. Putting too much content on your home page is a common mistake website owners make. Be selective and efficient. If it’s not essential, remove it. Good web design is about minimalism.

2. Website Sin #2 – Making Things Difficult

The route from first click to sale has to be easy. It’s important to think like customers. Evaluate the site from their perspective – it will help you figure out potential pitfalls. You don’t have to religiously follow the 3-click rule but it shouldn’t take much more than that for the visitor to get to the information they are looking for. Your site should be easy to navigate and perform the desired tasks. For example, requiring registration to leave a comment on the blog or having customers setup an account before checking out are two good examples of making it difficult for the visitor to do what they are set out to do. Make it simple or your visitors might abandon your site.

3. Website Sin #3 – Staying Static

You website is never done. You need to find ways to make it fresh, engaging and relevant. This will not only keep customers interest but will help in your website rankings. You can create separate landing pages for new campaigns and special promotions, add fresh content via blogging and connect your website to your Facebook fan page. Your goal is to keep adding to your website to bring visitors back and keep them engaged.

4. Website Sin #4 – Copying Your Competition

It’s smart to check what your competition is doing – this is how you can learn new ways to improve your site and make it stand out. Just don’t be copycats. If you look too much like other businesses customers could have trouble telling you apart. Also, avoid building generic looking website or those that follow current trends (there are plenty of those on the web too). Instead speak your own voice. Create a unique site, both visually and as far as content goes. Offer a unique experience to your visitors, an experience that speaks directly to your customers and is relevant to your business.

5. Website Sin #5 – Ignoring Your Audience’s Needs

In order to be successful, every website needs to be built with audience in mind. We all know that the only reason your website exists is to solve your customers’ problems. But oftentimes, small details we forget to consider regarding your audience’s needs can make a huge difference. Does your website need to be mobile friendly? Will your baby boomer visitors be able to read that small type? Be sure to understand your audience and its preferences before building your site. Rule #1: Design for the people who buy from you or you could be loosing their business.

6. Website Sin #6 – Ignoring Analytics

Google Analytics, or any other quality analytics tool available, will help you understand where your traffic is coming from, what keywords people are using to find you and what they’re reading on your site. Armed with that information you can build more of what’s working.

7. Website Sin #7 – Refusing to Get Help

Don’t let the fear of spending money stop you from being successful online. If you need more then what a design template can provide, seek professional help. Look online for sites you like. Many have links at the bottom to their designer’s sites, so you can find a designer whose work you already like.

There are a lot of ways for websites to go awry, but keeping a customer focus and using a little common sense will help you avoid many of the common pitfalls… and ensure that you don’t find yourself featured as the worst website of the year!

Running a successful web design business in today’s market is no easy task, especially with all the competition out there. If you are selling online, it is crucial to find e-commerce solutions that meet your design needs.
Keep these seven tips in mind and you will have a much better chance of coming out ahead of the rest and of achieving long-term success in the web design industry!

1. Brand, Brand, Brand
One of the pillars to long-term success has always been branding and with search engines now favoring the brand experience more, it’s even more important for online success. Your web design business brand should project a message that appeals to your target audience. This includes the style of your brand which plays a role in conveying what your brand is about.
Keep your branding consistent across all promotional materials such as your website, social profiles and business cards. Even your proposals, invoices and other documents should be branded. Whenever you advertise you should also be including your branding and over time, all this effort will translate into more name recognition and more clients.

2. Organization

You’ve heard it a million times and it probably won’t be the last. Organization is key to a smooth running web design business. Even the smallest organizational tips such as numbering your invoices, or using a consistent file naming system can make running your web design business ten times as easy.
Think of how much time people waste each day searching for their keys, where if they learned to put it in the same spot they would have way more free time and a lot less stress each day. This is just one example of bad organization in daily life, when on average, there is a lot more. This personal disorganization is often transferred over to the business world and must be fixed if you want the most success with the least stress.

3. Know Your Skills

Being a successful web design business owner takes many skills including business knowledge, web design knowledge, web development knowledge, marketing knowledge, people skills and so on. Some of us are better at and like doing certain things over others. This is why it’s important to know your role and not be afraid of letting others help out.
For example, if you are a strong designer and very creative, you might do better working with someone who does all the development. You could partner with someone, outsource or hire part or full-time employees to help run your business. Just know that one person can only be good at so many things.

4. Market Locally

Local marketing has also become huge in the world of Internet marketing. Google especially, has been introducing various changes to the way its search algorithms work. When you do searches for even broad keywords like “web design”, you will now see local results for web design companies near you, which before would not have shown up.

5. Never Stop Marketing

One thing you may have noticed about many successful businesses is that they never stop marketing. The same companies are constantly advertising on TV, radio the Internet and more. They are routinely coming up with new marketing ideas, testing what works and killing what doesn’t.
The same should apply to your web design business on whatever scale is possible. Create a marketing plan and budget based on your profits and figure out what works best. Try everything and always track your return on investment.

6. Outsource

If you are marketing properly, you should have more work than you can handle, but why turn it down? Instead, you could outsource the work and make even more money. Who you outsource to is up to you. Usually, you can go for the more expensive talent, which will produce better quality work or you can go for the cheaper talent, which will save you a lot of money, but the quality is usually worse.
Either way, you should have people ready to hand work off to. Eventually, you could even hand off your own work and instead spend your time managing your web design business full-time. Simply put, outsourcing equals more profits.

7. Stay on Target

Every business has its up and downs and starting a business can be a slow, but rewarding process. You can’t just expect to put up your “open for business” sign and watch dozens of new clients come stampeding through the door right away.
You need to work hard, show off your work and build a name for yourself before the clients will start coming in. Sometimes this can take months, sometimes longer and sometimes sooner. The creative process isn't just magic. Web Hosting Search's Jane Campbell explains how and why designers' creative process works, and goes through it from practice and preparation to execution

For many project managers and clients, the creative process is an unexplainable phenomenon that appears to be more magic than substance. For designers, the task of continually explaining that the creative process is real, and there is indeed a method to their madness, becomes a rigorous exercise in refraining from drop-kicking their sketchpads and laptops across the conference room. As communicators, it should be fairly easy for designers to explain how their process works and to some extent why it works. Unfortunately, the feeling associated with the creative process is hard to describe. It is, however, a process and there is method behind it.

Practice, preparation, and training

The creative process begins with a foundation of training, practice and preparation. This does not mean these things are necessary for creativity, it simply means that the process of creativity is easier to facilitate with a solid foundation of learning. In order for a designer to provide an inspired piece of work, the mundane act of translating the idea from the mind to its final destination must not be hindered by a lack of understanding of how to execute the idea.

Training is the actual act of learning how to do things. Whether the designer creates a design by hand or uses software, such as Photoshop or Illustrator, the tools cannot impede the process. For this reason, it is of the utmost importance that a designer learns how to use them efficiently.

In preparing to design, a designer must understand what has already been done and how they can do things differently. This is the beginning of the spark of creativity. Designers study everything. Inspiration can find its way into the mind of a designer in many ways. It may be a painting by Monet or the rhythm of pillars at the entrance of a neoclassical-style courthouse that inspires a design. Looking, seeing and understanding are three fundamental skills a designer must possess in order to create extraordinary designs.

Conception and incubation

Many times, you may find a designer looking out a window or sitting on a park bench doodling in a sketchbook. You may think they are simply daydreaming, or even worse, goofing off. In most cases, this is actually the most productive phase of the creative process. This is the time when a designer is incubating all of the different ideas that have spawned from preparation. This is the phase of the creative process where the designer may find two dissimilar ideas and pull them together into one cohesive concept. This is the so-called “spark” of creativity. If you interrupt a designer at this point in the process, you may find yourself dodging technical pencils and sketchpads.

The incubation period can also be very environment dependent. Ideas may be circulating through the designer’s mind, or making their way into the sketchpad, when they see something in a photograph hanging on a wall or hear a particular melody. If there is any time within the creative process that could be considered “magical”, this is it.

In some cases, this part of the process is very deliberate. Sometimes, though, the designer won’t even realise that their mind is putting different ideas together until the moment of illumination.

Illumination

This is the light bulb moment. Everything comes together and the most brilliant design idea is born. Unfortunately, this is not a part of the process that can be set to a schedule. Most of the time, this moment hits a designer when they are least expecting it or when it’s inconvenient. These moments seem to occur when a designer is in the bathroom, driving, or at a meeting that they can’t get away from.

At this point in the process, it’s incredibly important that the designer has access to the tools that will allow them to express the idea, such as a notepad, sketchbook, pens, pencils, paper, or a laptop. Once this eureka moment has occurred, the execution of the idea is almost a formality.

Execution

Execution or implementation is the final phase of the creative process. This is the point where the years of practice and preparation are most valuable. If a designer knows their tools inside and out, the execution phase will invariably be very short-lived. This is the point where many art directors or creative directors hand things off to their graphic designers. They explain the concept or show sketches, and the designer takes it from there.

It is also during this time that a designer must evaluate whether or not the idea is actually a good one. Good designers recognise that not every idea is good. However, it’s often hard to tell whether or not an idea is good or bad until they have mocked it up into something that looks more final.

The creative process is cyclical. It begins with the work of preparation and practice and sees its fruition in the final phase of execution. Whether the idea ends up being good or bad, the creative process is still successful because a good designer will learn from both and apply it to their future projects.

Growing a web project takes time and dedication. It involves many days with little or no sleep. It has an abundance of minutia tasks that need to be done when you’d rather be doing something else. Building a website necessitates a schedule that would make anyone but those who are truly passionate and dedicated to their idea, give up. Do you have it in you?

A strong knowledge about your subject

Whether you’re building an email app that will revolutionize the way people do emails or a web publication about baking cookies, you have to know your subject inside and out. When you’re not well informed, it clearly shows through to your audience. Being knowledgeable about your subject is about creating trust: Internet users are wary about the things they consume on the Web. If you can’t prove to them that you can be trusted, they have thousands of other sites to choose from.

Talented people

The foundation of any web startup is the people that have built it. It’s no secret that the largest component that drives the continual growth of Six Revisions and Design Instruct are their brilliant writers. Without them, our two sites wouldn’t be where they are now.

Discovering people with the same passion and belief is rare. Thankfully, we’ve found a few of them that have decided to join our family (you can see just some of them on the About page). I spend a lot of my time working with our writers, as well as helping them grow their own websites.

Partners that complement your skills

In the first article of Six Revisions, I said that you should avoid going solo for your web project. When things start to build up, in order to carry forward your growth and keep up with demands, you need to collaborate with someone.

For Design Instruct, I knew I needed someone who would be better than I am with visual art and design. I was a graphic designer back in the days when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, but have now since moved onto web development and web design. I also knew that I couldn’t run two sites on my own, yet I was fearful to put my fate in the hands of just anyone.

An open ear to your audience

Your users have a lot to say. They have a vested interest in your growth and have entrusted you with the responsibility of constantly improving yourself to meet their needs. Oftentimes, when we believe in something so steadfastly, we tend to shut these voices of alternative thoughts out.

Critics are a penny a dozen on the Web—the Internet gives people a cloak of anonymity that make it a piece of cake for raffish individuals to say negative things about your web project just for kicks.

However, there are also many people with ideas and suggestions that can make your site better. Take advantage of the collective nature of the Internet by listening to your users’ opinions, suggestions, and ideas. They have taken the time to share these ideas at no cost to you but your time to listen to them.

Relationships with people in your industry

The Web has the ability to connect us with people that we might not be in close proximity to. It’s important to foster and create relationships with people in your industry, regardless of whether you consider them competition or not. When we are working together rather than against each other, we can drive innovation and grow together instead of creating a counterproductive environment.

Make it a habit to reach out and contact the people in your industry. Participate on discussions in their website (you can, for example, frequently find me in the trenches of Smashing Magazine and Envato comment sections), see if there are opportunities to team up and build something together, trade war stories, and just get yourself on their radar.

Staying informed about the happenings in your industry

Keeping up with the events happening around you is critical. It’s part of being knowledgeable about your subject and is something your audience expects you to be doing. Especially on the Web, when things change so rapidly and interests are fickle, it’s imperative to maintain your information current.

Effective time management skills

Having a good time and task management habit ensures that you can keep up with the growth of your web project. Time is the primary limiting factor to your growth, and thus, you have to treat it as a resource, just like your budget and your technology infrastructure.

Taking risks

What stuns advancement of any project is the fear of change. Fear of change leads to fewer or no innovations. On the Web, being risk-adverse is not a good trait to have. In a realm where things move very quickly, being a stick in the mud will only make sure that the people around you that are taking all the risks will be reaping the rewards instead of you.

Looking out for opportunities to grow

The reason I personally respond to every email (I get hundreds a week) and carve out blocks of my time to partake in interviews, participate in discussions, write on other web publications, join panels, write books, and other activities that may not have a direct impact on Six Revisions or Design Instruct is because I never want to end up saying, "I wish I’d done that."

If you're in business today, a website is as important as an ad in the Yellow Pages. With a Web presence, you've got access to millions of potential customers around the world--it's like rolling out a major advertising supplement, marketing brochure and mail order catalog in one easily updated package.

And all without printing, postage or phone costs! The problem is that for most people, designing a website is on a par with building your own TV set--a major mystery best left unexplored. But if you can unlock the secrets of HTML and you've got a flair for graphics and copywriting, then Website design could be the business for you. The advantages to this business are that it's creative, you can start part-time on a minimal budget, and even if you don't already know HTML, it's not difficult to learn once you set your mind to it.

The Market

Your clients will be businesses--you can target everything from SOHOs to nonprofit organizations to professional associations to government agencies. Choose a geographic or specialty area to start with--say, small businesses in your community or real estate agencies--then send direct-mail pieces explaining the values of a website and your services. As a Website designer, your most important tool will be, of course, your computer; make sure yours has a fast internet connection. You'll also need a scanner (inexpensive is OK), Web page creation software, and a graphic design package.
