Anyway, as many of you are probably aware, we launched and successfully completed a kickstarter campaign to fund some summer shows. People got to contribute and in return, they specified where they wanted us to play and they’ll all get sweet rewards!

Shows will be unveiled soon for our summer and we will cover quite a large amount of states in this beloved country. So yeah, see ya out there!

With Thanksgiving thankfully behind us (see what I did there?), we now turn our eyes to that glorious part of the year known as the Christmas season. What a wonderful time of the year! Everyone is buying tons of things for other people that they don’t need (speaking of which, have you checked out our online store recently?). People are filled with an undefinable feeling of magic that permeates even the most mundane events. People are getting colds from all the germs floating around and contracting the flu from all the failure to eat beets bought at Schrute’s Beet Farm.

But alas, I digress. What I mean to say is that I want to wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Take a moment to be kind to someone today. Then do it again tomorrow. After that, you can go back to being mean and self-centered again, just like me. Remember to watch plenty of football and to take preventative measure against the cold on behalf of your poor car (anti-freeze is a great idea this time of year).

Above all, remember that you have a friend in Becoming The Archetype. Our music is here to battle the cold by warming the heart with intensely vicious music. Our lyrics are here to warm the head with bloodflow-inducing thoughts spawned from puzzlement over the meanings of our wordsmith. Our faces are here to bring a smile to your own face as you consider how much our public photos fail to show the inner nerd that you all know us to be.

As Randy Newman once said, “You got a friend in me.” Next BTA cover song?

So you know the drill: a band gets ready to release a new album and they start throwing songs online for their fans to listen to. Usually it’s 3-4 songs so that people can get properly excited about the new album.

With this album, the current plan is to release 4 songs before the album is released. We’re trying to be creative with how we do this, thus you have the unlock situation with The Time Bender.

As for the songs themselves, I can’t reveal which ones will be released yet, but I can say that we chose to release The Time Bender first because it’s the most straight-forward song on the album. It’s super brutal and features most of what BTA does best. It doesn’t have any clean singing, but at least one of the songs we release will have clean singing and I think you’ll really dig it.

The Time Bender was a good song for us to play live this summer and to release first and to make a video for because it’s not super complicated or confusing. We have a knack for occasionally losing some listeners with our more progressive songs, haha. So we still have that progressive element on I AM, but it’s in songs we don’t plan to release before the album comes out.

All of this to say: FEAR NOT! The next couple songs released will be super heavy as well and will contain more progressive elements. Enjoy these songs as we release them and remember, we often save the most beautiful moments (both musically and visually) for those willing to purchase the CD.

God bless and rock on!

Well, here it is. You’ve heard about, you’ve thought about it. Maybe you’ve even talked about it. And now here it is.

A new BTA album with a new lineup.

As you will come to find out, I AM is a work of monstrous intensity and focus. This is unlike any album we’ve done before because it’s sheer intensity drives home the fact that we have a new sound. Now, that’s not to say that everything is completely different. Chris sounds somewhat like Jason sounded. The vocals are still huge. We are still a progressive death metal band. There are still keyboards and epic intros. There is still an instrumental for track 5.

But you start to realize that while we’ve explored lots of sounds, we’ve never explored the sound of making a purely heavy album. We’ve never focused on diving into heaviness with all of our attention. So in my mind, I AM is a continuation of our musical journey and experimentation, primarily through focusing all of our attention on exploring sheer brutality in the riffs and in the vocals.

So there you have it. Whether I AM becomes your favorite album ever is up to you. It’s something we’re all exceptionally proud of and we have no doubts that those who don’t refuse to let go of the past will fall in love with this album and celebrate our entire catalog (just like Michael Bolton).

We’re almost done with our new record, and as a result, more and more of my attention is naturally being taken up by touring concerns. We have a busy schedule lined up for this summer. There are still some dates to be confirmed, but for the most part, our schedule has been filled up with full US touring.

First of all, we’ll be hitting a record (for us) 9 festivals this summer, and with 2 sets at a couple of them, we’ll be playing 11 sets at festivals this year. So that’s awesome. We’ll also be hitting a ridiculous number of states this summer. For 2 weeks of the summer, we’ll be taking new Solid State label-mates Wolves at the Gate with us on the Beat the Heat tour. That tour poster is up on our Facebook page.

There are lots of ways to view our confirmed tour dates, btw. If you’re a facebook user, we have all confirmed dates posted on our band facebook page (facebook.com/becomingthearchetypemusic). If you don’t use FB, you can view our dates on twitter. We tweet each show once it’s confirmed, so you may have to do some scrolling through our past tweets to find a show near you. And last, but not least, we’ll be posting all our dates on this site as well as on solidstaterecords.com, so there’ll be lots of opportunities to see where we’re going and when we’ll be there.

I can also tell you that we’re planning to play a new song in our set this summer, so it’ll be your first chance to hear new material from our new record! Yipee!

Ok, everyone’s doing sweet pre-order bundles these days. We wanna get in on the action and get you guys some awesome, limited edition stuff. We haven’t really done a ton of cool stuff in the past, because doing rad items for pre-order bundles requires quite a bit of lead time.

So this time, I’m getting on the ball early. I’m starting to collect ideas now. The pre-order bundles are for you, so I want you to tell me what you want and we’ll try to make it happen. Please suggest anything that would tickle your fancy, so to speak, and make you relish the joys of being a BTA listener. If it’s too expensive, we can’t do it, so don’t be listing Corvettes or human flesh or anything that we obviously can’t do.

Actually, do list that stuff. It might be fun to hear how off-the-wall you guys can get. But put some serious ones in there too. I wanna make the pre-order bundles something that you want, so you gotta tell me what you want!

Summer is the season for touring and your Archetype Boys are gearing up for an insane schedule of touring and recording. We’re set to record in Massachusetts with Shane Frisby, from May 21 – June 18. So that’ll be fun.

Then, we hit the road immediately, playing several shows on the way home (to Georgia) from recording. We’re only home a few days before we head out again, this time for 6 straight weeks.

The plan is to hit just about every state that we can, so if you keep your eyes on our events page on Facebook (and probably on the shows tab on this site), you’ll be able to find a BTA near you at some point this summer!

Below is a list of states that are extremely likely to be hit by BTA this summer:

Alabama
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Delaware
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Kentucky
Louisiana
Maryland
Michigan
Minnesota
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New Mexico
North Carolina
Ohio
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin

That’s 33 states! And depending on how booking goes, we may hit more states this summer!

So we’re releasing an album of remixes on April 17, titled Celestial Progression. Get it? Actually, it’s just an EP, since it has 6 tracks.

This whole thing came about as I realized I had a few friends who were particularly skilled at electronica and mixing-type stuff. So I asked Solid State if we could do a remix album using songs from Celestial Completion and they said “Absolutely!”

So I sent the masters to my friends in Born of Water (great band, check em out) which is a duo from Nashville that makes great atmospheric and electronic music. I also sent the masters to Sean Patrick Murphy, known as Giant Robot. He lives in Chicago and has been a friend of mine for quite awhile now. He played sitar on Celestial Completion and is lined up to produce the folk album that Brandon and I are doing this fall.

I told both groups to do what wanted and make the songs their own. You see, I wanted the remixes to take on a life of their own and be a song in their own right. And that’s exactly what Tom and Jonathan (Born of Water) and Sean did. Sean was a workhouse, knocking out 6 remixes of his own. We used 5 of those because one was really crazy. If you absolutely have to hear it, I bet he’d send it to you if he still has it. Born of Water focused all their energy on one remix and did a great job as well. Theirs is the clip that’s currently posted to our FB site and here on celestialcompletion.com.

The album will only be available digitally (iTunes and amazonmp3) around the world, but we might be able to work out a deal to have physical copies with us on the road. If we do, you’ll be able to pick up the disc at our shows.

So listen to the clip, let me know what you think, and keep your eyes peeled for Celestial Progression on April 17!

I’ve been working on a folk album with my good friend and ex-Anchors bandmate Brandon Michael Williams. We’ve got 10 songs and are ready to get them recorded well and mixed well so you guys can hear them!

The only thing we need is funding, so that’s why we started a kickstarter campaign. You can visit it here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1881063465/folk-album-seth-andrew-hecox-and-brandon-michael-w

Kickstarter is a genius tool that lots of bands and independent artists are using to basically pre-sell their album. If you would buy the album of a band you like once it comes out, why not buy it in advance and let that money help the band record the album and then they send it to you for free? That’s the concept that most bands are using and I think it makes a lot of sense.

So if you would like to hear some sweet acoustic and organ music with vocal harmonies, then click the link, watch the video and help us out. If you like BTA or Anchors or you just think I’m a jammin dude (I don’t know what that means but I heard a guy in a cool band say it so I’m pretty sure it means something awesome), then click on that link and be a part of something awesome.

Don’t miss out!

You heard it here first: BTA is gearing up to record a new album in a few months. We’ve already begun writing and these riffs are immediate headbang material. We’re going more heavy on this album and letting go of some of the more extreme experimentation that we explored on Celestial Completion.

Now, that’s not to say that the next album will be completely experiment-less. We’ve always had unique, progressive sounds and those will never go away. But strange sounds will not be the focus of the next record. The focus of the next record is riffs that just blow you away with their heaviness and headbangability. Yes, I just made that word up.

We’ve also got a lyrical concept in mind for the album and it’s one I think you’ll enjoy. I won’t give away all the secrets yet, but I can say that it will continue the BTA tradition of speaking eternal truths by means of allegory and overt spiritual tones.

I’m declaring that now is officially the time to start getting excited about a new BTA record. Let your brain run wild!

Anyone know about Sam Childers? He’s known as the Machine Gun Preacher and he runs a children’s refuge in war-torn southern Sudan. He’s controversial and the movie about him (Machine Gun Preacher) was controversial as well. But it starred Gerard Butler. So that’s good, right?

Anyway, I saw the movie in theaters with my family and enjoyed. Then I bought his book (on which the movie is based) for my wife for Christmas. Now I’m reading it because she has a high degree of difficulty in finding time to read.

And I’m blown away.

Seriously, this guy seems more like a myth or folk legend than a real human being. Anyway, does anyone care to weigh in on Mr. Childers and his ministry?

Some people feel that it’s lame for musicians to make public political comments. I’m one of those people. I don’t enjoy Angelina Jolie or Billy Joe Armstrong telling me who is gonna be a great president and who’s the worst president in history. Let’s just say neither of those celebrities is qualified to make such statements. So I’m not delving into politics here and I think that clarification is important.

I’ve been interested in the Occupy Wall Street and other Occupy movements for awhile now and I’ve been keeping my eye on what’s been happening and how it’s been shaping up. I’m really fascinated and intrigued by the whole thing and since they got my interest piqued, I’ve wrestled with my feelings on the subject.

Ultimately, I’d like the comments on this blog to be an open forum to speak your mind, but I do feel an obligation to speak my mind. This of all topics is certainly a subjective viewpoint sort of thing, so feel no pressure to conform (ha! as if…) to other people’s views here.

As I said, I’ve been following the whole thing for awhile and I got way more interested when I got to hang out with my friend Ben Hamilton a few days ago. He used to live down here in the mountains of north GA with us, but he moved to NYC a few years ago. He’s been very involved with the Occupy Wall Street movement for months and was even in news clips on Fox News and a OWS sketch on SNL (seriously).

The picture that Ben painted of OWS was one of the most unique things I’ve ever heard/seen. Hearing first-hand accounts of these events instead of hearing what the news articles polish it out to, I realized this is a battle. Literally.

I said earlier that I hate when musicians endorse a political party or candidate. That’s not what I’m doing. I’m told OWS people tend to be more liberal. I don’t consider myself liberal. But if I had to pick a side, I’d be part of the OWS side in this battle. Obviously I’m not so gung-ho on this that I’m moving to a city and joining the fight. I believe if you feel that strongly, you should throw away the normalcy of life and join the battle, much as Jesus called Simon to do. So I’d go join the fight if I thought it was of utmost importance and I will go if this thing continues to grow and gets insane. But I’ll definitely say I’m not on the other side. The NYC police are doing so many things that are just, honestly, wrong to do to humans, especially humans not posing a physical threat to the public.

Ben said politics isn’t discussed hardly ever in the OWS camps/meetings. The movement is about fraud, insider trading, greed, illegal business practices and has come to include things like police brutality as a result of all the mishandling of the situation on the part of law enforcement. I can agree with standing against those things and even though one normally wouldn’t go overboard to oppose those things when they happen from time to time, it seems like we’ve seen a nation-wide commitment to these horrible traits when it comes to the financial decision makers who control vast amounts of the nations spending power.

Sometimes any Christian or citizen is asked to stand and fight against not only spiritual tyranny, but also against social injustice or national evils. Is this one of those times? And if so, what is the proper response for you? I feel it’s best to discuss and continue gathering information for now. What are you doing/refraining from doing/remaining ignorant about in this matter?

Since the word “holiday” stems from the roots of “holy day” I get a mystical excitement whenever I say the word. I enjoy the holiday season and always consider it a special time of year. In my opinion, the holiday season starts in late October, with preparations for All Saints Day or Halloween and ends in early January, after New Year’s Day.

We all know there’s nothing intrinsically special about any of these days. Our modern holidays are chosen to represent something special and we all agree to celebrate similar things on these days. Jesus might not have been born on Christmas Day, but since we don’t know exactly when He was born, this is as good of a time as any to celebrate the coming of the Savior of the world.

So with that in mind, I’d like to invite each of you to reflect on the whole holiday season and dwell on the 4 distinct feelings/emotions that each of these 4 holidays evokes. Halloween conjuring images of death and the truth of man’s mortality, Thanksgiving bringing about a (hopefully) thankful spirit and reflection on the goodness of our heavenly Father, Christmas returning our minds to the pre-eminence of Christ in our lives and what His life and death and resurrection mean to us, and New Year’s Eve/Day causing us to reflect on the past year and it’s victories and defeats as well as hopes and aspirations and goals for a new set of days.

Think on these 4 holidays together and prepare yourself for 2012. It’s the last year of the world, according to new hipster logic about ancient calendars, so you better play it safe and prepare your soul for eternity, just in case.

Our website has been up almost a year now and I’m taking the rest of the holidays off (unless something crazy happens and I just have to blog about it). So when I return, this site will be a year old and we’ll celebrate the one-year birthday of celestialcompletion.com and look forward to the New BTA.

Sick.

Becoming The Archetype is entering a new era.

There, I said it. I also said it in my interview with Steve at Indievisionmusic.com, which posted earlier today. Becoming The Archetype has had new members on tour for practically this whole year, which was a busy year. We released our 4th album, Celestial Completion, and played over 80 shows in 12 different countries in just an 8 month span. We also wrote and recorded Oh Holy Night (out December 6 on iTunes and amazonmp3!) and have orchestrated a series of remixes to be released early next year (I’m very stoked for you guys to hear these bad boys).

So yeah, it’s been a super-busy last 8 months and we did nearly all of it with some different members than are on Celestial Completion. The vocalist we used for the vast majority of all that activity was Chris McCane.

Chris McCane is a cool dude who’s been a friend of BTA for years. He and Daniel were in a band together before joining BTA and Chris also runs a music venue in Cleveland, GA. Chris did a spectacular job touring with us this year and won over everyone who watched our sets. He knows how to put on a great show and he appropriately projects the image of what the lyrics of our songs are saying. He connects well with the audience and he’s fun to be around on tour.

All of these factors have led us to make Chris McCane the official new vocalist of Becoming The Archetype.

So as you probably have guessed by now, Jason Wisdom has left the band. The reasons for this are explained adequately in my interview with indievisionmusic. Also departing the band is Duck, drummer on 3 of our 4 albums. Both will be missed and remembered fondly by us and by you guys. We part on friendly terms (I just watched the Broncos game last night with Jason and played basketball with him the night before). On drums and bass, we’ve had two members of The Overseer filling in, Abashai and Brad. We would’ve loved them to join the band, but it looks like The Overseer is getting signed, so they’re gonna need to tour with their own band. We’ve already found a drummer (that’ll be revealed soon) and we’re close to nailing down a permanent bass player.

With that being said, I strongly believe Becoming The Archetype still has a mission. BTA has always considered itself a ministry and ministries don’t stop when a few members leave. BTA will continue to reach out to the people who like this sort of music and give those people Christ-centered lyrics set in (we feel) quality, well-orchestrated music.

BTA also has a lot left to say musically. Everyone got a small taste of Daniel’s songwriting capabilities on Celestial Completion, most notably on Path of the Beam and The Resonant Frequency of Flesh. He is a fabulous guitarist and screamer and has a good singing voice to boot. He’s already started writing some riffs for our next record and I’m way into them. He and I will be working a lot over the next few months to craft the music of the next BTA album.

So this is the new BTA. I’m very excited about it. Solid State Records is very excited about it. Heck, even Jason is a little excited about it. So you should be excited about it. I know some of you might be a little skeptical of ch-ch-ch-ch-changes, but just remember that without change, growth is impossible. BTA has always grown as a band. We’ve never had the same lineup on consecutive albums. We’ve always made music we’re proud of and this time around will be no different.

So yeah, see you out there!

One thing that makes life on the road fun is composing lists. If you’ve ever seen the movie High Fidelity, you know how much fun lists can be and how much they can reveal about your personality. Its a fun way to express yourself and get into epic arguments about subjective opinions.

We do lists such as Top 10 Comedies, Top 10 Metal Albums, Top 5 TV Shows, you know, that sort of thing. So we’d like to share this fun with you. Choose any list you want to create and post it. To get things started, I’ll list my Top 3 TV Shows. Ok, here goes:

1) LOST – Best show of all time. Ending was a bummer, but nothing tops it’s superb story and character development.

2) The Office – Funniest show ever. And I don’t care what you think, it’s still good.

3) Arrested Development – Would be the funniest show ever if it’d gone more than 3 seasons. Rumor has it that a 4th season is on the way. Let’s all be good boys and girls so Santa will make it happen for our Christmas present.

After those first 3, it gets kinda difficult. I don’t know how to compare Scrubs with, say, Seinfeld or The Simpsons. You can see that I mostly watch comedies on TV. I’ve heard Dexter is great, so I’m gonna try that soon and the same goes for The Walking Dead. Oh yeah, and Person of Interest may turn out to be incredible.

As some of you may know, we’ve been tossing around the idea of doing a Christmas song. The idea has some merit, because Christmas is a sweet holiday where you get tons of stuff for free and you’re allowed to greedily stash it away and horde it till it rots.

Wait, you didn’t do that as a kid? Oh, uh, neither did I.

Anywho, it looks like we’re gonna move forward with this thing and it’s got a good chance of happening. We may or may not have decided which song it’ll be and we may or may not feature screaming and other metal elements. It all kinda depends on how the song seems like it should go as we work on it.

So what do you think? Terrible idea? Brilliant genius from (yet again) the brilliant mind of Seth? Biggest mistake of our lives? Meh, who cares? I’m trying to run the gamut here. Any possible responses I missed?

And which song are you longing to hear? I’m secretly hoping to convince the guys to do “Jingle Bells, Batman smells…” but it’s a long shot…

I don’t know if you’ve been staying up with BTA on facebook or twitter, but I’ve been announcing this for a couple weeks now. Artist Series Guitar is releasing a special edition BTA guitar and man, its so rad! With Clifton gracing the body of the guitar, this baby surpasses pretty much every guitar’s body artwork that I can think of.

When ASG initially approached me about doing a guitar, I was stoked about it, but didn’t know what design we could use to represent BTA. I talked with Ryan Clark about it for awhile and we tossed around the ideas of using the letters BTA on it or using our logo or something like that. None of those felt right. None of those ideas carried any excitement or coolness with them. Then I remembered our old friend Clifton Radburry. Oh yeah, that’s right, Clifton has a last name. Any of you who used to follow us on myspace might have noticed that occasionally a myspace post would appear bearing his insignia. But Clifton is a sort of LOTR character who bears many names (ever wonder about that in LOTR?). So he can also be referred to as Clifton Beardskull, which is more of a job description or character tale sort of name.

Now, this guitar is pretty sweet. With a Les Paul-style body and dual coil humbuckers, it’s a solid option for a rock or hard rock sound. Of course there’s no whammy-bar option, but who (besides Eddie Van Halen) needs those anyway? The black matte hardware adds an element of serious attitude and is something I look for (even though, I know, it has nothing to do with tone or playability. Still.) in a guitar that I feel comfortable wearing around my neck. The headstock is also very cool. Considering so many headstocks have been done before, ASG did a good job designing something that wasn’t too wild (like a stupid Warlock) but was too bland or copy-cattish (is that a word?).

Now, granted, this isn’t a $2,000 guitar that we’ve got here. What we’ve got is a solid guitar that will sound good and play well and look insanely cool. And its very affordable. At $449, this baby is a good price and is something I’m proud of. Ultimately, the Clifton guitar is the guitar of choice for affordable, cool-looking heavy tone and when I get mine, I’ll be wielding that axe all over the place (like in the living room and bathroom, but mainly on stage).

So there you have it! Now what do you think?

Ok, time to get nerdy. Let’s talk about books, authors and (gasp!) reading. I enjoy reading and I’m betting most of you do too. So here are some of my favorite authors and what I’ve been reading lately, with notes.

Stephen King

Shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering references to the Dark Tower Series abound on Dichotomy. I also really liked The Stand, The Green Mile Series, On Writing and tons of his short stories. I’ve read more pages by Mr. King than I have any other author, but in total books I’ve read, he comes in second only to C.S. Lewis.

C.S. Lewis

If you don’t know who I’m talking about, you’re waaaaaaaay behind. Go catch up. With books such as the Space Trilogy. The Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity and the Screwtape Letters in his catalogue, he’s an ace. I revere him more than almost any other mortal man that ever lived. If C.S. Lewis believed it, the belief holds weight with me (which isn’t to say I agree with everything he believed). He was a good author with a great mind and an unparalleled gift for explaining theological truths in a clear, beautiful way. My favorite author ever and probably the favorite author of several readers of this blog.

G.K. Chesterton

This is where my romance with British Christian authors from the 1900 – 1940 era starts to become evident (included in that list would be Tolkien, Charles Williams, T.S. Eliot and Dorothy Sayers, all giants of literature). I just picked up another Chesterton book a couple weeks ago and my passion was rekindled for his works. His Father Brown mysteries and novels such as The Ball and the Cross and The Man Who was Thursday are brilliant and full of truths that are all the more “truthy” because of the great story in which they are clothed. Chesterton was Catholic and was a staunch defender of Catholicism and I admire that, although I myself am not a Catholic.

Hunter S. Thompson

Just getting into him. Loved Johnny Depp in “Fear and Loathing…” and am reading the book now. I figured with Depp starring in the Rum Diary soon, now was as good a time as any to get into the wild world of Gonzo Journalism, amiright?

Kurt Vonnegut

Absolutely loved Slaughterhouse Five, which I read this past winter (it was the only good part of that dreadful season). Then I read a collection of short stories called “Welcome to the Monkey House” which contained “Harrison Bergeron” which many students read in school. I love short story collections from good authors and this was certainly one.

Jonathan Safran Foer

Man, “Everything is Illuminated” was such a fun book. Hilarious and touching and wildly outlandish, I’ve never read anything like it. If you didn’t like the movie, I understand. It wasn’t that good. Then “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” came out and that was good too. I don’t think he’s written anything else. I don’t agree with much of his worldview, but he’s an excellent writer, for sure.

Lemony Snicket

If you like (or can even tolerate) children’s books, read “The Series of Unfortunate Events” as soon as possible. I own the first edition of all 13 books and read them all on tour in 2006. They’re short and super fun. Great for kids, but also extremely witty with great allusions for adults. The first 3 are fairly straight forward and simple. After that, the plot gets twisted and very crazy.

*Lemony Snicket is the pen name for Daniel Handler. After a short read into a couple of his books, I do not advise reading any books with his name on them.

Flannery O’Conor

As a Southern Catholic, O’Connor wrote about the “Christ-haunted South” which I think is a great picture for where I come from. Her short stories were great and her theories and views were even better. She believed lots of great things, and a list of some more memorable of her quotes can be found here: http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/22694.Flannery_O_Connor (my favorite is ”Our age not only does not have a very sharp eye for the almost imperceptible intrusions of grace, it no longer has much feeling for the nature of the violences which precede and follow them.”

I could go on and on (maybe I will in my next blog), but I’d like some feedback on these. Also, don’t do the “I liked that book” or “I think so-and-so is pretty good” stuff. I want you to express yourself and tell me why you like so-and-so and what particular parts of a book you like and which elements disgust or baffle you. Sweet.

I’ve been getting into folk recently, and that admission generates a strange feeling within me. I’ve never been into that sort of thing before and I always scoffed when my friends were buying Andrew Bird’s CDs.

But recently, artists such as Fleet Foxes and Bright Eyes and Ryan Adams have caught my ear, so to speak, and I’ve been trying to figure out why. The music isn’t complex, no element of normal folk music is technical in any way and the recording doesn’t have to be all that great to convey the spirit of the song. And I think that’s where folk artists have it right.

Everyone in the metal world is trying to outdo each other, whether it’s with guitar solo wankery or uber-br00tal breakdowns or with the most cool members sporting the coolest tattoos matched with the most “I don’t care” attitudes. You don’t see that in folk or bluegrass at all (sorry to suddenly mix in bluegrass. But it fits, right?).

Folk artists are really just interested in telling a story through their song. There doesn’t need to be a guitar solo or really anything except strummed chords on an acoustic guitar. The singer’s voice doesn’t have to be particularly impressive. You won’t find accomplished vocalists excelling at folk. The recording of the album doesn’t even have to be that special for a folk artist.

What really matters to the folk singer is that he have an interesting story to tell and that he tell it adequately. There’s an art in that, and it’s more subtle than you’d think. You usually need a good melody, one that catches the ear and sticks in the head. Not too complex, but not so simple you get tired of hearing it. You also need a unique voice. Just singing “good” doesn’t cut it. You need to have a character to your voice that is interesting and unordinary. Bob Dylan’s voice is awful when compared to real singers like Freddie Mercury and Jeff Buckley. But that doesn’t matter to Mr. Dylan: he’s got a story to tell, not vocal exercises to perform.

These things make me really admire and respect folk music in a way that I’ve never experienced before. Now, I’m not saying the next BTA record is gonna have lots of folk arrangements on it or anything like that. But I do want you to know that we’ve always had a focus on storytelling (see Physics of Fire parts 1-4 or the Requiem Aeternam Trilogy) and we will continue that tradition. Stories are how we communicate who we are and why we do what we do. Christ chose to teach primarily through stories such as parables. Stories reveal a lot about life that is difficult to explain in a straightforward manner.

So think on these things. Buy the Mumford and Sons record (don’t worry, the one use of profanity won’t kill you). Listen to the insights about life revealed to you by Sufjan Stevens and Nickel Creek.

Then tell me: isn’t there power in those songs, in those lyrics, in those stories? You tell me.

Well, it was the longest tour BTA had done in 5 years, but we did it! 6 weeks on the road for a full US tour! We even went to Canada for 5 shows and I think we traveled through about 30 states.

Now we’ve got some time off as we look forward to our 3 week European tour this fall. We also will be busy on the song front, as we’re currently working on a remix EP. Yeah, it’s gonna be sweet. More news on that later. Also, we may be working on another single to record this fall and have out sometime near the end of the year.

That’s the update for now! Enjoy the last fleeting moments of your summer!

The fine guys in Inhale Exhale introduced to a great touring game that we played nearly every day on this tour. It involves a pretty dense frisbee and two plastic cylinders, like cans. The cans both have slits in them for a frisbee to go through and are also open at the top.

The cans are placed about 15-20 yards apart. The two teams, comprised of two players each, split with one member at each can. There are a few ways to score points. If you throw the frisbee directly into the can without help, you instantly win the game. Throwing a game-ender is exceptionally difficult (as evidenced by the fact that I never threw one even though I played way too much). If you hit the outside of the can on your own, that’s two points. If your teammate hits the frisbee into the can, that’s three points and if your teammate hits the frisbee against the outside of the can, you score one point.

You play to 21 points and we call the game Can Jam!

There are lots of other rules that I can’t convey all that well via blog, but I think I’ve painted the picture ok, haven’t I?

Have any of you played this game or a similar game before? Have any of you ever even heard of this game? Have any of you created a game or discovered a game that I don’t know about?

Give me the lowdown!
