Foreign Tourist to be careful of Touts & Prepaid Taxi at Airport

Recently their was couple from Germany came to India for their honeymoon. They Had pre-booked their hotel in Delhi. But the prepaid taxi Driver took them to a travel agent.The cab driver told that hotel, the couple booked was full. The couple had to spend night at travel agent suggested hotel. That is not all travel agent got them signed a tour Worth 1.6 Lakh and forced them to pay the amount. The couple paid the amount further the taxi which they hired took them to one hotel in Pushkar where the taxi driver asked additional 200 USD. The couple fled to Delhi and informed German embassy and police was informed. Though the Travel Agent and Prepaid taxi driver were arrested. But it teached some lesson for all.

1. Please ask your hotel to arrange pick up from Airport. Its always better. If you donot have any information.
2. If you are taking a prepaid do not step out the car till the cab driver takes you to the address you mentioned him.
3. Confirm with the hotel yourself and do not trust the driver.

These things happens at all tourist places. But it is upto you to be careful.

Air India has offered a New year Bonanza scheme for NRI and other overseas tourists offering fares starting $200 on its domestic flights for two journeys.
The scheme is called the 'Visit Incredible India Pass' and will be available in overseas market from Jan 1, 2012.

Roughly two decades after the British-built New Delhi was unveiled to the world in 1931, the Capital witnessed another slew of hectic construction activity. The public buildings and mass housing projects that came up in the first decade after India got independence, gave shape to the Delhi we

know today.

Delhi saw a huge population explosion after Partition and also became a magnet for migrants from across the country looking for better opportunities in the independent nation’s Capital. The old part of Delhi was already bursting at the seams and New Delhi was not built to accommodate this multitude of people. Also, the Capital needed new institutional and public buildings to accommodate the increasing number of government offices and officials.

Apart from the challenge of creating this infrastructure, there was also a need to create indigenous architecture that would express the ethos of the time.

“The period after independence was that of hope and the feeling that we can determine and develop our own architecture, instead of a colonial power building for us,” said noted architect AGK Menon.

The post-independence Capital saw a complete deviation from the architectural philosophy that marked the colonial building. When Lutyens was planning a new Capital for British India, the idea behind the grand, imposing buildings was to firmly establish the imperial suzerainty of the colonial power. The independent nation’s Capital needed an architecture that would showcase its faith in modernity and progress.

“The need to create our own architecture was expressed in two ways,” said Menon. “Some wanted to revive the past, as seen in buildings like Ashoka Hotel that were modern structures but with Indian characteristics. Others advocated modernism, which was the rage internationally at that time and examples of such buildings are Rabindra Bhawan and the CSIR building at Rafi Marg,” he said.

Independent India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru took a keen interest in the architecture of the new constructions, which he believed should portray the country’s commitment to development and progressiveness. So, utilitarian modernism became the template for almost all government buildings that came up in the 1950s and dot the area between central secretariat and at ITO.

Another reason behind the austere facades of these buildings was the acute crunch of funds. All embellishments were done away with and the prominent features of these buildings were horizontal massing of large windows, freestanding staircases and cantilevered porches.

Mass housing projects, mainly meant for government employees, had an even more severe look. Housing complexes that came up in areas like Sarojini Nagar (then Vinay Nagar) and Laxmi Bai Nagar were just simple structures with a lime finish with the only visible features being sun shades over windows and accentuated stair towers.

Spacious houses were built for senior officers in areas like Kaka Nagar and Bapa Nagar. Private ‘colonies’ came up in Malviya Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Karol Bagh and New Friends Colony in the 1950s and 1960s also saw a deviation from the conventional style of houses. Living and dining rooms were joined, courtyards were out and bathrooms were now attached with bedrooms.

Some Question often visitors to India find difficult to get answers:

Which locations in India would give me the best U.S. Dollar to Indian Rupee exchange rate? Would it be at the airport, hotels, banks, street money exchangers, etc or are all exchange rates basically the same? Exchange rates Differ at different places. Everyone cuts its own commission. Best exchange rates are to be found at licenced small private exchanges.

What denominations of U.S. currency would receive the best exchange rates? $100 & $50 bills, or $20 & $10 bills, or are the exchange rates basically the same no matter the U.S. denominations exchanged?You get good Exchange rates on higher currency notes.( $100 and $50 notes.)

What Indian Rupee note and coin denominations would be the most useful in everyday transactions for inexpensive to medium cost meals/transportation/gifts, etc? Breaking large INR notes isn't a big hassle these days. Sure the chai wallah will have problems breaking a INR1,000 notes but most shops and hotels won't have a problem

Despite the Indian rules against importing and exporting Rupees, are those rules normally enforced? I may bring less than 5,000 Rupees to use during the first few days and take home less than 1,000 Rupees as souvenirs but will not do so if I am to get into trouble or have the Rupees confiscated. Arriving with enough INR for a taxi and a chai is a good idea. There is no retriction on bringing in resonable amounts of INR. It is quite legal to trade in INR but if you have INR10,000,000 in your bag the tax man will want a little chat.
