How is it that Christmas is almost 10 days away? There were busy DIY elves working away this weekend, no doubt. There was lots of activity in Cooper's house!

Here are some updates from Cooper's basement:

Charm bracelets for the grandmas:

This was so easy to make. I found nice, inexpensive charm bases and glass beads to fit. The boys made happy faces and hearts and with a little glue, presto - a treasure!

The kids also made a few Tic Tac Toe boards from tile I found at Lowes (for about $1.50 a piece) and some stones. They look so great!

Here is another Japanese Washi tape project my daughter made:

I'm making necklaces from drapery pullbacks (seriously, they are awesome). I love them:

I had to share this -- Here is one of our old holiday cards I found stored away in the decorations. We made this seven years ago, but it is still my favorite:

Thanks to Treehugger.com and Cool Mom Picks for hosting an amazingly creative and inspiring Talk on holiday gift ideas for the holidays!

Here are few of the highlights - -

My favorite gift this year is to my parents. They don't really NEED anything, but since they've just moved to a new city, we are getting them season tickets to the symphony. I think this will be a great way to introduce them to the community, and it's not another tie or sweater that will get packed away with all the other gifts from Christmas past...

- If you think about it, what we really treasure are memories as opposed to stuff someone buys in a store!

- Buy someone new to an area one of the discount coupon books for their city or region. They can get restaurant meals for half off, discover new stores to shop, get discounted sports or recreational opportunities, etc.

- My parents love getting gift certificates to hotels near our house - it's a little reason to “vacation” near us, and the kids have fun seeing them, playing in the pool and getting room service.

- My one gift for my mother this year is decorating her house for the holidays.

- A friend of mine painted her roommate's room as a Christmas gift one year - it was something the other girl had been meaning to do for months and didn't have time for!

Today, in TheMotherhood.com, we hosted a virtual baby shower of new-mom wisdom for new and expecting moms. Dr. Jen Trachtenberg - pediatrician, author and AVENT spokesperson and 10 top mom bloggers (each of them either expecting or with a young baby at home) hosted the Talk.

From what to expect during pregnancy to preparing and caring for a brand-new baby, these “been-there” moms shed light on the process and shares the best tips they received from friends and family.

Keep reading for some of the best nuggets of advice, or check out the entire Talk so you don’t have to miss a thing. Thank you to Dr. Jen and all of the amazing hosts and participants for sharing their invaluable knowledge about what to expect as a new parent!

Pregnancy: Pearls of Wisdom

Rest. Rest. Rest. I took naps each chance I got with all three of my pregnancies, and it kept me sane. I also listened to my body more and more with each pregnancy after pushing myself into bed rest with the first one. (Victoria Mason)

If you're barfing, it means something's fighting in there, and that all is well. (Casey Mullins)

If you're really worried about something, call the doctor; it's better to be "that" pregnant lady than something going wrong. (MommyBKnowsBest)

Relax and don't try to do everything! Let people help you when they offer! :) (Shannon M.)

It's important to make sure you're eating right and taking your prenatal vitamins - and make sure to get some sleep too! If you're still feeling very tired, it may be worth checking in with your ob/gyn. (Dr. Jen)

This might not be what expecting moms want to hear, but I never realized how "hard" pregnancy was going to be. I had it rough, and I had to make sure that I allowed time to deal with illnesses and weak moments properly. So be prepared to take some sick days or not do as much. (onceamonthmom)

Newborns: Nuggets of Advice

Best advice I ever got was from my Mother in Law, who told me, "You can never EVER love a baby too much." (After my elderly grandma scolded me for holding my tiny new daughter too much, claiming I would "spoil" her.) (Casey Mullins)

Put the baby on the floor when you need to put him down. He can't fall off the floor. (Jenny Rapson)

Sleep when the baby sleeps. I wish I had done this even more than I did :) (Jenna)

One big thing I learned fast- if someone asks what you need- FOOD. Meals. Lunch foods. My husband took to making me sandwiches before leaving for work because it was all I could do to get the baby and kids fed/taken care of and I always forgot to eat. (This Mama Loves)

Be Prepared

The BEST advice that I never received was: take a mom with you when you register for your baby items. The list that they give you at most box baby stores has 90% of things you'll never use. (AlainaFrederick)

When I was expecting my second baby, the best advice I got was to make and freeze meals beforehand. It was a lifesaver those first few weeks! (Jenna)

After the baby comes, there is a long adjustment period... sleeplessness is difficult on a mom. I would highly suggest having things as set up as possible for changing, night feedings, and help as you can get. Try a tiny refrigerator for milk/snacks/water in your room. Stock your diapers - buy them ahead while you are pregnant at each grocery trip... you'll need it as easy as possible when baby comes. (Sprittibee)

I would also say to check out local mom groups before you have your child, mommy groups can offer advice, support and even meals when baby comes and you already have a built-in network, especially if family is far away. (MommyBKnowsBest)

Trust Yourself – and Your Partner

"Read your baby, not the books." I found that I worried more when I focused on all that the books said could go wrong. (Sprittibee)

I wanted to start by sharing a nugget of advice that I wish someone had told me the first go around. To TRUST MY INSTINCTS. Yes, there is so much excellence in reading resources like those that Dr. Trachtenberg offers, AND there is something to be said for following your mama bear instincts. (Christine Koh)

One of my favorite pieces of advice to give mommies is listen to all the advice but only do what you feel is best for your families. (MommyBKnowsBest)

Oh, the one advice someone gave me is to not to take over with the whole baby process - let my husband in on the action. Husbands have their way with the babies and I have to be ok with it... letting some control go is not easy sometimes! (Joy)

Take Care of Yourself

"Every calorie is a successful calorie" when you've got super-bad morning sickness - that helped save my sanity and get rid of some early mommy guilt - I concentrated on eating healthy once I could actually keep food down! (Jenny Rapson)

The best advice I got was to take a little time for ME every day. It's easy to get lost in the minutia of caring for someone else (and everyone else!). (RookieMomHeath)

Be clear about visitation parameters and if you need something, ask. We told people: a) we would love to see them; b) we probably weren't good for more than an hour of visitation; c) it was highly likely they would see all or part of one of my boobs during the visit; and d) if they wanted to bring takeout we'd love them forever. (Christine Koh)

Document and Treasure Your Memories

I kept a week-by-week journal of the highs, lows, sickness, etc., with my first, and it was SUCH a relief to read with the second. I would be like, "Oh, that is normal" and be encouraged. You think you won't forget, but you do. (onceamonthmom)

I remember when I was pregnant for the 1st time, 9 months seemed like ages but flew by! Looking back now, I would have captured more moments and memories during my pregnancy - maybe keep a weekly journal or take weekly photos to remember your journey! (Dr. Jen)

Advice From Dr. Jen

One thing that's really important to do after you give birth is to find that right pediatrician for you and your family. To start with, ask for recommendations from friends/family and meet with a few in your area to see who you hit it off with - because it's hopefully going to be a long-lasting relationship! Remember, you're looking not just for an expert to take care of your child when they're sick, but also a parenting partner.

A lot of new moms in my practice ask, "How do I know my baby is getting enough to eat?" In general, newborns feed every 3-4 hours and also have wet diapers every 3-4 hours. Bowel movements can vary a lot. In addition, most babies gain about 1/2 an oz. to an ounce per day in the first few weeks, so it's important to keep your regularly scheduled well-baby check-ups.

The Hosts

The FABULOUS mom bloggers who co-hosted the Talk were:

Aracely Worley, Daytripping Mom

Beth Knudsvig, Anti-Supermom

Casey Mullins, Moosh in Indy

More than two-thirds (68 percent) of respondents said they had never used Foursquare, and nearly half (45 percent) said they did not use Whrrl.

Aside from their own personal blogs, Twitter and Facebook were the clear leaders in the online space, with a large majority of respondents (93 and 91 percent, respectively) reporting heavy usage of the popular social networking sites.

Questions about other online tools revealed that usage of YouTube and online games falls far short of Twitter and Facebook among mom bloggers. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

hosted a live chat with Michelle Conlin (married to “No Impact Man” Colin
Beavan) and nine fantastic bloggers this week to talk about Michelle’s year of
'no impact' living - no electricity, cars, planes, television, shopping,
elevators, toxic cleaning products, etc. – and about some of the ways we are
all trying to live more frugally and greenly.

The ideas
shared were incredible. Here are the highlights (read the entire conversation
here):

Things we are doing to live a life of less impact

Our kids take a hot lunch to
school each day with no waste - they take cloth napkins & our utensils too.
(Gina
Rau)

Our thing is putting out only
one can of trash per month. It keeps everything in check for us. Renee Limon

Just by taking off shoes (when
you enter your house), you can reduce the toxins on your floor by over 80%. huntstevens

We have three
families that live within 1/2 mile of each other and we've been trying small
ways to "co-house"; Using 1 lawn mower for all three families,
trading different magazine subscriptions, co-op babysitting, prepare large
meals and share with one another, etc. (Holland)

Green idea: use the gorgeous newspaper/magazines for wrapping paper and
book covers! I have a bathroom papered in New Yorker mag covers. Sarah56

We have greened up our holidays by reducing the amount of gifts we give,
giving handmade, and avoiding commercialism like the plague. Sara Sophia

I buy solid shampoos and conditioners. Sara Sophia

It was my idea to get rid of our TV because I realized it had become the
enemy in our own living room. Michelle Conlin

We have moved a lot (one of the sacrifices we make for my husband's
career) and we try to choose walkable places to live. It's a win-win: use
the car less, and enjoy old-fashioned foot traffic interaction with people and
places. Problem is, it's harder and harder to find places like this. Frugal Mama

Our community just started curbside composting. You can put *way*
more stuff in than you can in your own little compost (like meat, eggshells,
cat litter, all kinds of stuff). Tracy Mayor

Focusing locally is big for me - the artwork in my house (such as it is)
was all created by local artists. Diane Mac

I do a lot of freezing of things we buy in bulk. We only shop once a
month so I have a very stocked freezer. I make our own freezer meals and also
make them for my in-laws. Lisa Sharp

[We sometimes take] no-impact vacations where we take the train and our
bikes to a local spot instead of going far, far away. Michelle Conlin

We just returned from a week of hiking and kayaking in the Pacific
Northwest. We had no TV and it was amazing how much we read and talked and just
reconnected with each other. Internet and cell phone coverage was spotty and
eventually we just stopped checking for it. It was the most wonderful,
spiritual, healthy vacation we have EVER had in our lives... robin

We grow some food of our own (small
garden) and have canned some favorites. I don't think we save any money and it
certainly is more effort and time, but I believe that being involved in our
food is important for me and my children. Gina Rau

As Michael Pollan always says, stick to the perimeter of the grocery
store--less packaging. Avoid the deadly and trans-fat and high-fructose-loaded
middle aisles. Michelle Conlin

I use Dr. Bronner's bar soap but not liquid because of plastic bottle.
Even though it's recycled plastic, they don't take it back for further
recycling. BethTerry

It's not hard to "line dry" inside. We don't have a yard and
yet we hang most of our clothes on a drying rack perched on the dining room
table. BethTerry

In answer to the question, “Did you
really forego toilet paper?”: There are millions of cleaner, more
sanitary ways to deal with all things of this matter. For example, the
bidet....which I jerry rigged for our family and found to be much cleaner. Michelle Conlin

We try and think about it wholistically, asking how we can change our
time and money allocations--away from unsustainable products, unhealthy food,
unhealthy activities, and boring things like electricity and gas bills--and
towards the things we love: delicious and healthy food, fresh air, a night out
on the town, an after school program. huntstevens

Some
things we’re thinking of trying:

I have a great
space for gardening and I have been thinking about community gardening in my
yard with some neighbors, share the expense, labor and bounty. Cindy

Try not spending a dime for one day, one week, one month...it is amazing
how liberating, exciting and freeing this one tip can be. Michelle Conlin

We're hoping to go down to one car and have my husband bike/Metro to
work. It could mess up our weekends, since we have three busy kids, but we
think we can make it work. urbanmama

I have been fantasizing
about is doing yet another massive, mega purge. I do purges of our
nanoplex--our 750-square-foot apartment--regularly. But this one would be the
Mother of All Purges. I want to see how little stuff we can actually live with.
I also love the idea of a clean, spartan space. Zen meets Eco meets Eames sort
of thing. Michelle Conlin

We have talked about getting an old, banged-up sailboat--restoring it and
then using it as our summer house, only we would sleep on the sailboat and
visit friends on the Long Island Sound. Michelle Conlin

Take the family on a freegan expedition--there is nothing like seeing how
one can live like a queen out of the consumer culture's waste bins. Michelle
Conlin

Some benefits of the No Impact Year,
quoting Michelle:

Immediate and automatic weight loss. I lost 15 pounds. Colin lost about
20 or 25.

I was a
sugar-addicted trans fat junkie before the project and also pre diabetic. The
local eating wiped that condition out.

I also suffered from rashes and miraculously those went away too. I felt
healthier and I was healthier. The only funny health incident was the no Q tip
thing....at one point something got stuck in my ear and I had to go to the
doctor to have her remove it.....

I often refer to No Impact as the ultimate post-sub-prime financial plan.
We cut our discretionary expenses by up to 80% at times … The magical financial
trick for me was that once I made a decision to NOT spend, it became a great
fun adventure to abstain. Like a game.

Michelle said in our conversation,
the year that she, her husband, young daughter and dog lived a no impact life
in New York City “ended up becoming one of the great adventures of my adult
life.” We feel lucky we got to be a part of this eye-opening,
thought-provoking, fun conversation with Michelle and great group of co-hosts
and be inspired in our own adventures!

There was so much more to the
conversation - be sure to visit the actual Talk, Michelle Conlin and Her
No Impact Year, to see all the GREAT ideas!!! Thank you to the

I'm visiting my Mom for a few days and I've got to say it just slays me. She has declined so precipitously over the last few years that I still can't quite believe she isn't coming back.

I look at her and I see the memory of my Mom, but not the real her. It's all moving so fast and I process a little more each time I see her. Tonight what's making me sad is thinking about how I always knew Mom adored me. That shouldn't make me teary, I know, but now as a mother myself, I can see how much she loved her only daughter and took joy in me.

And I wish I had done more to acknowledge and love her back, in ways that would have really meant something to her.

I could have written her a birthday card with a list of my favorite moments with her.

I could have surprised her with a mother-daughter trip to (anywhere), just the two of us.

I could have told her she was beautiful (and, really, she didn't need to take her glasses off for photos).

I could have given her a thank you note, a real one, thanking her for the traits, interests and qualities in her that I loved and that she encouraged in me.

I could have talked to her more when I was going through infertility and she was so worried about me.

I could have flown to California with her as we talked about years ago to track down and visit the houses my great-grandmother (her grandmother) designed and built.

I could have helped her organize and write a cookbook with her best recipes from around the world instead of just begging her to do it.

I could have held her hand and told her often I really loved having her as my Mom.

I could have done so many small, easy, loving things when she would have appreciated them. When she would told every single one of her friends.

And why didn't I do more? Because I knew that she knew I loved her. Because she wasn't perfect in every way (who is?). Because I was too busy with whatever. Because I believed I had all the time in the world, even when the signs were there years ago that I didn't. Because, because, because.

I don't think this is about regrets - Mom and I had so many fantastic times together and a great relationship. I just really wish I had more time with her.

Because then I'd use it to be outrageously loving in whole new ways. And I'd get to see how happy it made her.

I love when our work with moms and brands creates great new information that's valuable to all of us.

We just recently completed a project with VTech (creator of the V.Reader e-book for 3-7 year olds) where 16 favorite mom bloggers asked their readers for tips on encouraging kids to read, especially over the summer. The suggestions came flooding in, and here we have the top ones .... the VTech Ultimate Tips for Encouraging Kids to Read.

Enjoy - there are some GREAT ideas here!

• Integrate Reading into Real Life: Show children that reading can be both practical and fun. Try reading recipes and creating goodies together, or read a story and then re-enact a favorite scene for other family members, complete with props and basic sets.

• Ask Your Pet to Lend an Ear: Encourage your children to read aloud to the family dog or a favorite stuffed animal. Your youngsters will get to practice their reading, and pets make great listeners.

• Create an Intimate Space: Make reading exciting with indoor “campouts.” Use sheets and chairs to help your kids make tents, pile blankets and pillows inside, and bring snacks and a stack of books. Reading with a flashlight will add novelty to the activity.

• Reward Reading Comprehension: Set aside one night each week for a “quiz night,” when you can read to your kids and give them rewards, such as money to set aside for more books, for answering comprehension questions correctly.

• Throw a Book Party: Make reading a social activity. Invite a few of your child’s friends to your house and ask them to bring a favorite book. Provide snacks and games that incorporate reading.

• Get Involved Locally: Check area libraries, bookstores and even bank branches. They will often host story hours or summer reading programs for kids, offering incentives for reading a certain number of books.

• Think Outside the Box – or Book: You don’t need to use books alone to encourage kids to read. Ask your child to read things like street signs and menus when you are out and about, or put closed captioning on the TV so he can see as well as hear the words of his favorite shows.

• Give Them a Choice: Set aside an hour or two of quiet time during the day, and tell your kids they can either read or take a nap during that period. Letting them choose to read will remind them that they can choose reading at other times, too.

• Write Stories Together: Reading and writing go hand in hand. Write stories with your kids one word at a time – you write one word, they read it and write one word of their own – until you have a story you created together.

• Play to Their Interests: Let your kids read about subjects they already enjoy. From Pokemon to ponies, if they are fascinated by a topic, they will love reading about it.

Thanks everyone for sharing your great ideas!!!!! And thank you VTech for partnering with us on this fantastic effort!!!! We loved being a part of it and getting so many fantastic ideas for encouraging our kids to read (see the full list in the VTech Circle on TheMotherhood!).
