Time To Talk Turkey...About Fashion!!

We think it is time to pause and reflect on a few fashions that are real "turkeys" and would be best shot and carved up.

First, the "woolly mammoth" vest, even in a luxury fabric these are over done and do nothing for the bodies they are draped upon.

Next, the "Pocahontas/gypsy" headband, they always look cute on the display, but somehow never seem to translate well to a real head.

The "snuggie", a blanket with sleeves?! Isn't that a sweater? This is no excuse to look like a dork.

The "overdone" black-tie flat, in this case too much is a bad thing. These ballet flats should be sleek and elegant, not the focal point of your outfit.

And finally, patent leather, rubber or spandex tights, great for the concert stage, not walking the aisles of the mall. They must fit perfectly, which on most of us is a challenge.

There is just so much great fashions items out and about, why be persuaded to wear such duds. All five of these trends need to be laid to rest.

Moi's Lastest Wild Hair, Fencing!!!

The Feline Citizens are sure their person has completly lost her wits. Because Moi has taken up the noble art of fencing, with swords and such, rather like Zorro or a Musketeer or a pirate. Only much more better.

As such Moi is now a member of the Washington Fencing Academy out of Issaquah, WA, founded by Kevin Mar, an accomplished fencer and vice-chair of the Western Washington Division of the USFA (United States Fencing Association), and Serge Timacheff, official photographer for the International Fencing Federation and chair of the Pacific Northwest Section of the USFA, the WFA is building a reputation in the Pacific NW as a first class training organization.

Along with Senior Coach Eugenio Salas, former Venezuelan world-team epee fencer, and winner of multiple medals in Pan American, South American, Central American/Caribbean Championships, the club is encouraging younger fencers by offering classes thru local parks and recreation departments as well as individual sessions for more advanced fencers.

Jazzy Investments to Spring Into Fall With...

The real question on every fashionista's mind right now is what does one wear to a recession!! Investment dressing is the catch phrase for this fall, and the Feline Citizens gladly offer their own personal favorites:

Xavier likes the look of a menswear oxford in a high heel. Peep toe or patent leather, wear them with opaque tights with skirts or wide leg denim.
Little Bit prefers a playful skinny belt with everything (including her considerable middle...).
Fiona goes for a lightweight sweater coat, layering is always trendy and Fi likes the idea of something playful to carry around.
Little Anne, always a lady, likes anything with a floral print. Stopping to smell the roses (or tuna treats...) is always one of her favs.
Jassi J is all for a straight leg trouser, much easier for most of us to pull off and a purrfect complement to her lovely straight tail.
And Moi? Moi luvs the look of a statement necklace. Whether you dig they grandmama's jewelery box, comb the vintage shops, or go for a modern hi tech piece, all will instantly update any look.

And fall fashion week in New York is in full bloom!! The fall forecast is not one look, messages were more muffled. The mix and match of casual and formal, long and short, tight and loose, were prevailing trends. But where one designer might show a flapper look, the next may have been inspired by the 1970's. Balance is the key for the fall season.

Here are the fall trends hitting the runways:

Feathers-Less expensive than fur but surprisingly versitle.
Dressy coats-Always a wise investment.
Purple-The color was consistent throughout the collections, from Rock & Republic to Michael Kors.
Tweed-A classic jazzed up with metallics, either with jodhpurs or in an evening gown.

We Have All Gone Dotty For Polka Dots...

Ah spring has sprung and the warm air makes us all a bit light headed (including The Feline Citizens...). Which may be why the fashion powers-that-be always love polka dots for spring and summer.

And we must agree, polka dots are fresh and clean and bright and a wonderful splash of color just when we need it.

The Feline Citizens say polka dots remind them of their jingle balls and rolly toys, which they lost under the sofa months ago (and we always find during spring cleaning...).

If you are not a full-on polka dot person, try them on a beautiful bag or pair of shoes. A few dots go a long way. They just make Little Miss Jassi J turn downside up!!

We are pleased and delighted to introduce our latest members, Fiona the Friendly and Little Anne (because she is...). Fi is a spotted tabby with white paws and chin. Anne is a lovely black Burmese lady. Both are of course purrfect additions to the clan and pawsitivly thrilled to be here. It just seemed we did not have enough cats.

Six Essential Pieces For Your Autumn Wardrobe

The fashion powers-that-be have come up with the six absolute essential items to "make" your fall wardrobe a sucess! First on the list is:

The Bag!

Designers from Louis Vuitton to Juicy Couture are turning out covetable carryalls each season, but now fashion is about being creative and not toting the same bag as all the "it" girls. Look for crafty bags and expect to find everything from clutches to slouchy totes in every price point. The one classic we see every season is the Chanel-inspired chain strap bag, always a class act.

The Shoe!

Platforms are still in vogue, especially the 1940's inspired style. In particular look for dressy details, such as patent leather and t-straps. And if you are new to wearing the higher heels, practice, practice, practice first.

The Dress!

Industry watchers tell this is the year of the dress, for the very practical reason that dresses are easy. Apron and sweater style may be worn over leggings (another hot hot look) or skinny jeans (ditto...), or on their own with heels. Color blocking is popular, as is the flattering empire waist, and flared sleeves.

The Belt!

Yes, the belt is back. Worn low over jeans and pants or primly at the waist of a dress, the belt is in. Look for a fresh take, a bright color or polka dots.

The Jacket!

The tweed blazer has been a fall classic since Katherine Hepburn's day. This season's version sports stylish gathered sleeves, not too padded shoulders, and tartan plaids are a must. Pair them with wide leg slacks or an A-line or trumpet skirt.

The Top!

Search for pretty details to balance fashions minimalist moment. Look for pleating or bows in a featherweight silk. Try darker colors under your blazer such as burgindy or deep blue. And play down the jewelry, go with earrings and a bare neck.

The Feline Citizens have been saying of late that fall is certainly in the air. And well you might ask, how the heck do they know?! We have been ponding that very thought and have a few suggestions.You know fall is just around the corner when:

You start sorting and organizing your sweaters in 80 degree weather.
You try to remember who borrowed the leaf blower.
You find yourself doing "back to school" shopping even though you have no kids.
Hot apple cider (or buttered rum depending on your taste...) sounds wonderful.
The cats start sleeping next to you again.

The St. John Ladies Are Not Amused...

As those of us who follow fashion know, St. John Knits has had a turbulent time the past two years. Their attempt to appeal to a broader, and younger, customer has failed miserably. The new ad campaign featuring Angelina Jolie has not been received well. And the traditional St. John lady is not standing for it, they are not buying into the new image. In fact, they are not buying anything St. John at all! The slimmer cuts and non-knit styles have not gone over with them and they are staying away in droves. Long time customers have been very vocal in their displeasure with the changes in everything from buttons to color choices.

With the departure of Richard Cohen, who launched most of the changes, and Tim Gardner, their designer he hired, St. John is trying to right a sinking ship. Marie Gray has returned to the company's design studio as a consultant to bring back the values St. John has been known for, and the direction of the company in changing. And that includes fit. The change in sizing was too far for most loyal buyers and did not fit the needs of her lifestyle. In coming collections, silhouettes will again be roomier. Now the "new" looks will represent only a small share of the line, while the classic santana knit look will make up the majority.

St. John has stopped doing Fashion Week runway shows, and the Jolie ads will be curtailed. The company gambled on the loyalty of it's long time customers, and lost.

The Feline Citizens are heartened. They too prefer the classic styles and fit of the traditional St. John garments.

Summer Musings From The Feline Citizens...

The warm weather has proven fascinating for the kittens, Xavy and Jassi, who are one year old now. They do not remember summer and the outside smells and noises are of great interest to them. Mum Little Bit is diligently teaching them the ins and outs (like how the fan is not a scary thing but a thing to keep you cool...). The Beez however prefers invoking his senior privilege of having the best spot in the sunshine for napping.

All this brings to mind a few thing to think about when considering summer clothes. First and foremost is that no matter what designers tell you, swimsuits are NOT made true to size, they always run at least three sizes smaller than you normally wear. This fact makes the buying of them a little less frustrating...

And never, never, never, leave the house without looking at yourself from behind. Denial will not change the fact that people see you coming and going. Sad but true.

Do pamper yourself by doing a pedicure and painting your toenails. Little Bit is convinced if you want to make things happens you should paint your toenails. Preferably candy apple red (Chanel makes a doozy called "Ruby Slippers").

And one final note, no matter how mush you weigh, or how you feel about yourself, or anything, shoes will always fit.

About Fashion at MOHAI
MOHAI is proud to present Fashion at MOHAI, a new exhibit featuring the first-ever Seattle appearance of Théâtre de la Mode, a world renowned collection of French fashion mannequins and stage sets, conceived in 1945 by leading fashion designers and artists to hail the rebirth of the fashion industry at the close of the World War II. Fashion at MOHAI will also feature more than 70 dolls created by late local artist Ada Odenrider, as well as a small assortment of couture garments from MOHAI’s collection. Fashion at MOHAI premieres Saturday, March 4, 2006 and is open through Sunday, July 16, 2006.
The centerpiece of Fashion at MOHAI is Théâtre de la Mode, a unique display that takes you to Paris in the 1940s, where you feel the emotions and realities of the war. Couturiers, set designers, milliners, shoe and glove makers, jewelry designers and other artisans joined together to create a show of their fashions in miniature. Nina Ricci’s son Robert first conceived the idea as a way to showcase the Paris fashion industry while raising money for war victims.
The intricate 27” tall dolls and their lush sets toured major cities of Europe and the United States, beginning in Paris and ending in 1946 in San Francisco. There, after the exhibit closed, jewels worn by the dolls were sent back to France, the sets were presumably destroyed, and the dolls disappeared into storage in the basement of the City of Paris Department Store. Rescued in 1952, the dolls were donated to the then-new Maryhill Museum of Art near Goldendale, in Washington’s Columbia Gorge.
In the 1980s, the late Professor Stanley Garfinkel of Ohio’s Kent State University rediscovered the dolls and the Maryhill Museum sent them to Paris for restoration. The sets were then rebuilt and the Théâtre de la Mode exhibit opened at its original 1940s location in Paris. Among the designers whose fashions are represented in Théâtre de la Mode are Worth, Pierre Balmain, Gres, Paquin and Nina Ricci. The collection recently completed an international tour that included The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Fashion Foundation in Tokyo, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and The Imperial War Museum in London. Now, for the first time, Seattle has a chance to experience Théâtre de la Mode.
