3: Chose the right size box.Boxes that are too small will tear and boxes that are 2 big leave too much room for your items to bang around.

4:Wrap each Item Individually

4: Make sure you use Packing Tape

5: Label your parcel correctly so it can be easily read.

Use the search bar to find your nearest UPS store and remember that the people handling your package don't really care if it gets broken or mishandled.Like I said on my other posts, I have been an employee of UPS for many years and stepped on crushed thrown many a packages...It's the norm so use bubble wrap and be generous.

Let me start of by saying I spent 3 years at a local UPS hub loading trucks so if your starting out or thinking about working at UPS as a loader or unloader I have useful information that will help you so listen up.

Part time loading and unloading schedules are 5pm till 10 or 11pm till 4.More than likely you will only be working 3 or 4 hours with the exception of peak season where more hours are available.Be ready to be worked worked hard,to the brink.For a seasoned manual labor full time worker this may not be a problem,but UPS likes to employ young workers fresh from high school.For a student this job will prove to be more of a physical challenge,I know because I witnessed a lot of turnover from the younger employees.

After the initial week or two your body will start to get used to the constant lifting and within a few months your body will be fully adapted and sore free.I was sore my first two months at UPS.

Basically all the job is about is to load or unload as many boxes as physically possible within the few hours your at the job.You will be pushed,the faster you are at loading or unloading the better a worker you will be perceived as.Again,UPS likes to promote and hire young so chances are very good you will have a young fresh out of high school supervisor with no working experience.

UPS offers excellent benefits and opportunity,UPS drivers and management make good money.If your a student I recommend working at UPS because like I said they promote young workers frequently and offer tuition programs.Just be ready for hard work,a fast pace environment and heavy lifting.Stick with it and chances are good you will be glad you did.

If you're like me, you probably hate packing and shipping the things you sell on eBay.

Don't get me wrong, I love selling on eBay. I just don't like the shipping part. I find it monotonous to hunt for boxes, wrap the items, drive back and forth from the post office, and all the other steps involved in shipping.

Then there's the waiting for the buyer to receive the item. Has it arrived yet? Did it get damaged in shipping?

It took me a lot of trial and error to figure them out, but the following 7 steps will help make your job easier when it comes to shipping, as well as get rid of the stress of waiting for the item to be delivered to the buyer.

1. Professional Wrapping

When you wrap your item(s), wrap it professionally in nice, clean tissue paper. If breakable, be sure the item is wrapped with bubble wrap as well. Include a business card with your website information, name, address, or a printed statement showing the item(s) name, item(s) number, price paid, and a small hand-written note thanking the buyer for their purchase.

2. Insurance

Insurance is usually a good idea but in general, it should be an optional feature, with the decision left to the buyer. Remember two important things about insurance. First, insurance is VERY inexpensive. Therefore, in your description, you should state how much insurance would cost and recommend it. Who knows...maybe your recipient will not even be at the office until 3:00PM and then DHL Next Day 3:00PM, FEDEX Standard Overnight or UPS Next Day Air Saver would provide the needed quality of service at significantly reduced cost. The same is true for 2nd day service. UPS provides a second day service that arrives by 10:30. However all three carriers provide a second day service that will arrive by end of day. You never know about urgency if you do not ask and the savings can be significant over time.

One final point that we want to make is on the matter of airway bill preparation. Many office workers do not fill out the waybill completely especially when sending overnight letters. If you leave any portion of the waybill empty the carrier will default to the most expensive option. Make sure that anyone filling out waybills knows how to fill them out correctly. For example, if you fail to indicate that the package may be left without a signature (if this is the case) then a signature will be acquired for an extra fee.

EBay Start Up Supplies

The following is a list of items that I have found to be most useful for being prepared and organized as an eBay seller. I also give a brief explanation of how the item can be used to make your work easier.

The Inventory Sheet is my own creation. When it is completely filled out it will contain important information that you will want to keep for future reference. After all selling on eBay is a business venture and should have proper record keeping.

Inventory Sheets are the most important item in this kit. Inventory Sheets help keep track of items and the information related to your eBay Auction. Inventory Sheets are also good for keeping a permanent record of all your eBay transactions. They also can tell you how much of a profit or loss you made from your item. Use only one Inventory Sheet per item being put up for auction on eBay.

A Master Log sheet for keeping track of Inventory Numbers and descriptions.

This comes in handy for when you have a lot of items up for auction and need a quick reference to find an item number without thumbing thought all the Inventory Sheets. The log also let's you know the next available inventory number when you are ready to add another item and start another Inventory Sheet.

A Binder to keep your Inventory Sheets in order.

File folders to store completed Inventory Sheets. You will need to have 12 file folders so you can label them by the month. You should also file the Inventory Sheet Items that have failed to sell. You will want to know the expenses involved with all transactions for income tax purposes.

A small tape measure for taking measurement of boxes and items.

A roll of clear packaging tape good for sealing packages and attaching shipping labels.

A tape gun for quick & easy package sealing.

A calculator for totaling dollar amounts on your Inventory Sheet.

Thank you cards to include with your auction item. I use business cards for thank you cards. Each card has space for you to include your e-mail and eBay My World address.

A small pair of scissors good for cutting tape and shipping labels.

A Sharpie good for marking packages. Some packages may need to be marked FRAGILE.

A yellow highlighter for marking important information on Inventory Sheets.

If a buyer has special handling requirements, I always highlight them for quick reference.

A handy tote bag with pockets to hold your eBay supplies. I have noticed that my supplies were getting lost so I started using a tote bag to store my stuff. I put my tape gun in the main compartment and I use the pockets for my scissors, pens, markers, and calculator.

Priority Mail Shipping cartons available for free at your local post office.

A digital postal scale is good for determining shipping charges.

Packing material needed to help your item to be delivered safely. This can be crumpled up newspaper, bubble wrap and/or packing peanuts. In my town we have a newspaper print shop that sells their end rolls. An end roll has blank paper left on the end of the roll. They are good to use because there is not ink on the paper. The ink is very messy to work with and you don't want to leave black fingerprints on your nice white Priority Mail boxes.

A clipboard for holding Inventory sheets awaiting payment. If an item sells, I take out the Inventory Sheet and place it on a clipboard. I hang the clipboard on a hook so I can see at a glance what needs to be paid.

After the item has been paid, I can finish filling out the Inventory Sheet, print a packing list and package the item for shipping. I turn the sheet side ways on the clipboard to indicate the item is ready for shipping.

When I get back from the post office I take the Inventory Sheets off the clipboard and match them up with receipt from the post office. Then they get filed by the month shipped.

A stapler for attaching Inventory Sheets to shipping receipt.

A printer for printing invoices or packing lists. Always include a packing list or a copy of the invoice with all items being shipped. This will give the buyer a reminder of what they bought and from whom.

A digital camera for taking pictures of your eBay item.

Clear plastic bags to protect the item from any dirt and odors. I always package my items in bags just in case if the package gets damaged during shipping. They are also good for keeping small items in inventory and you can mark the item number on the plastic bag.

A place to store your eBay inventory items. This can range from a simple cardboard box to many plastic totes stored on a shelving system. Mark each box or tote with a number. There is a line on the Inventory Sheet to record the item location. Make sure that your inventory is stored in a smoke-free area and is protected from other odors that will devalue your inventory. A garage might have gasoline odors and a dining room might have cooking odors. I have seen sellers get negative feedback because the item had a bad smoky odor.

1) Always Pack the Item Properly

The biggest mistake you can make when shipping an item is to go lighty on the packaging and send an unportected item. Buyers will instantly leave negative feedback if the item arrives damaged due to bad padding. Make sure you look into the proper packaging for the item you are shipping - a book is different then a china doll, and both require proper materials.

2) Never Pay For Packing Materials

Right behind improper packing is over paying for shipping materials. There are far too many sources of free boxes and free padding to need to buy them. I have been a powerseller on ebay for 4 years and not once have I paid for packing materials. EBay and USPS offer free boxes, UPS offers free shipping labels. Local retailers will generaly have old boxes lying around also - this is perfect for those large items.

3) Ship Promptly After the Auction Closes

So you've just spent $400 on the newest game console - purchased it from an eBay Seller. Do you want to wait a week just for the seller to ship the item? Neither do your customers. Always ship the item as soon as possible after the ebay auction is closed.

4) Box the Product Before the eBay Aucton is Over

It is a good habit to get into packaging your items before the auction is finished. This makes it exceedingly easy to ship within a day of the buyer paying. Shipping quickly will grab good feedback more than anythign else.

5) Use UPS Ground Shipping for Large Items

It is generally the best to use UPS ground for anything that weighs more than 10lbs. It is very inexpensive to ship large items with UPS. Though slower than USPS, it is far more cost effective on larger frieght.

6) Use USPS Priority Mail for Sending Small Items

Anything less than 10lbs is best shipped with priority mail. Priority mail is very fast, and very inexpensive for small things. Shipping with priority mail is also very good for your buyer, as it will get them their item quickly and effectively.

7) USPS Media mail is Best for Shipping Media Items

If you are shipping a book, cd, dvd, or any other item that fits in the media catagory - it is probably best to ship with media mail. This is a very cheap service, and is great for the items it is meant for. If your item is expensive, however, it may be better to use priority mail to please your buyer.

8) Include a Thank You Note in Each Package

This is one of the most overlooked methods of creating return customers. You need to ship the package anyhow, why not attempt to get another eBay purchase out of each customer? Almost all of the big players on eBay use this tactic.

9) Use Paypal to Print Shipping Labels

Printing eBay shipping labels from Paypal is one of the easiest and most time saving features availible to new sellers. Larger eBay sellers might want to look into furthor ebay shiping automation, but for everything under 50 packages per week - electronic labels from Paypal are the way to go.

1. Ship Small, Lightweight Products

The heavier and bulkier the product, the more it will cost
to ship. Pick light items in preference to heavier items.
Of course, downloadable e-books are the lightest product of
all. On the other hand, if your customers want your heavy
and bulky items badly enough, they should be willing to
pay for the extra shipping charges.

2. Ship Nonphysical Products

Having to ship physical products means more work. You need
to pack and label your products, calculate shipping
charges, and arrange for the orders to be shipped. Again,
electronic downloads eliminate the hassles of physical
shipping. However, tangible goods seem to have a higher
perceived value. That being the case, you won't want to
eliminate physical products entirely as they can be real
profit makers for you.

3. Drop Shipping

Another way to avoid some of the hassles of product
fulfillment is drop shipping. There are suppliers who will
ship one item at a time for you. You don`t have to stock
any inventory. You simply pay your dropship supplier out

Ship With the Ups Store

Did you know that every package shipped within the UPS system is covered by up to $100.00 of insurance protection AT NO COST (with very few exclusions such as documents or perishables)? What happens when your packages does not arrive at its destination or arrives damaged?

If you ship with The UPS Store, you contact the store and the staff will file the claim on your behalf. If you ship at a customer counter or authorized shipping outlet, you will likely have to file the claim yourself. Phone 1-800-PICK-UPS (1-800-742-5877) and speak with a representative to file the claim. Have the following information handy when you call the 800 number or your local The UPS Store (if you shipped with the store):

* tracking number (most UPS tracking number start with the number "1" and the letter "Z" and are 18 characters long)
* whether the contents are missing or damaged
* condition of the damaged items (i.e., shattered, dented, nicked, bent, etc.)
* whether or not the damaged items are repairable or replaceable
* the value of the damaged or missing items
* the telephone number of the recipient
You will be instructed to contact the receiver and have them retain the contents of the package, as well as the packaging material, for five business days. After the fifth business day, the recipient may retain or discard the damaged items. You will have to fax to UPS Claims department a copy of the original invoice for the items, an estimate for repair, or a replacement item. You can go to QVC.COM or HSN.COM or some other appropriate website to find as close a match to the original item as possible, print out this information, and fax it in to the Claims Department.

UPS may decide to visit the recipient and inspect the shipment for proper packaging materials and outer carton. If the inspection reveals that the items were not packaged correctly or an unapproved shipping carton was used, the claim will be denied. Keep in mind that ALL items packed by The UPS Store locations are assumed to have been packed correctly. The few dollars you might save by packaging something yourself might turn into a denied insurance claim if you did not pack sufficiently to meet UPS standards.

So, the safest way to protect your valuables in the shipping process is to have them packed at your local The UPS Store location. Let the packaging experts carefully pack your items to ensure that you will be fully covered in the event there is an insurance claim for the shipment.

Typical ups treatment,as i said before in other posts,Speed over quality is the ups motto.These drivers pressed for time by Ups brass.They are probably on the verge of getting demoted,suspended or fired.Maybe they just dont want to get written up,who knows?One thing i know for sure this is common practice.

Tracking Your UPS Packages

Tracking your package can sometimes be cumbersome. You have to go through all your emails to find the shipment tracking information or you have to go to UPS's website and entering their long tracking number into their system each time you want to keep tracking your package.
There is now another solution. If you go to http://www.followthatpackage.com you can enter in your tracking information once and forget about it. Our system allows you to receive updates to your email box letting you know the status of your package each step of the way.
This system was originally designed to alert your cell phone of your package status, but due to costs, this part has not been activated as of yet.

Once your package has been delivered you are no longer updated as to the package's state. The nice feature that this system allows is that you do not have to call customer service reps from where you have received your package to find out why it was shipped, where it is or what is delaying the delivery. You are notified each step of the way.

Role of the UPS Store in the UPS System

When is my box going to be delivered to me? This is a common question fielded by The UPS Store employees. The fact is that The UPS Store locations have nothing to do with delivering packages. Their role in the UPS system is to facilitate shipping.
The local hub facility is responsible for delivering packages to the local area. They receive tractor trailer loads of packages to be sorted and loaded onto trucks throughout the night so that when the drivers come in, they can begin their delivery route.

Of course, Air delivery packages have priority. Since they generally have a 10:30 a.m. guaranteed delivery time, these packages have to be delivered first. Since it is easier to find businesses, commercial establishments are the next priority. Businesses generally close by 5:00 p.m., so UPS tries to get these packages delivered between 10:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.. Keep in mind that there is no guaranteed time for delivery of ground packages. If the truck is still driving around at 10:00 p.m. and your package gets delivered that late in the day, your packages is considered to be delivered "on time." Finally, residential deliveries are the lowest priority. They are generally more difficult to find (unless you buy from QVC or HSN every day and you are on a first-name basis with your UPS driver!) since they sometimes have no house number markings. They are also more expensive for the same reason.

The local hub facilities have no listed telephone number in the phone book. When you call information, you are given a telephone number for the The UPS Store nearest to the hub. Most hub facilities do not allow The UPS Store employees to give out the unlisted number. You can always call 1-800-PICK-UPS (1-800-742-5877) for information about your package. Use your local The UPS Store location for expert packaging and outbound shipping services.

1: Use one label that has clear,complete delivery and return addresses on the front. Placing a duplicate address label inside the box is recommended in case the outerlabel becomes unreadable

2: Pick a sturdy box with room for cushioning. On recycled boxes, mask all previous labels and markings with a heavy black marker or adhesive labels

3: Seal boxes securely, using strongtape designed for shipping.Do not use string or paper overwrap, which can potentiallycatch in package-sorting equipment

4: Do not use duct tape, kraft-paper tape, cellophane tape, masking tape. Also, do not wrap the outside of your package with string or kraft paper

5: Provide core protection by wrappingmaterials separately and using appropriate cushioning.Foam packing materials are ideal. Provideat least 2 inches of packing materials on allsides of the items.

6:Use a new corrugated box with flaps.If you must use an old box, remove labels orother shipment markings from the box

7:Batteries: Battery powered items will sometimes get turned on during shipment. Remove and wrap the batteries separately.

8:Irregularly Shaped Shipments * Tires Wrap pressure-sensitive tape around the tire to conceive a flat, smooth surface for the bar code/address label. Attach them securely, and do not cover the bar code with tape or film.

9:Banded Packages:Ups Ground prefers individual boxes instead of banded ones. If you must band your boxes, please combine same-size packages and band them together at both ends; be certain bands are tight and secure; mark address information on each box; and keep bands away from address and bar code labels.

It always makes me laugh when i see drivers miss treat packages.Unfourtunately this is child's play compared to what loaders and unloaders do at the hubs.Drivers typically handle boxes with the most care

Basically the Hub and spoke system works like this.Your package is picked up and brought to the nearest distribution hub.From here it is processed,scanned and sent to a corresponding hub.If you purchased faster methods like overnight or 2nd day your package will be shipped to a major air hub.If you ship using the standard three day service your package will likely be shipped through various ground hubs before arriving at its destination.Here lies the problem,at every hub stop your package is handled by a loader,unloader and a sorter.On average I would say your package stops at about two hubs per trip.Which means your package is taking damage at every hub!Not to mention the drivers who pressed for time administer the final touches.

One of these ground hubs are where I spent my nights loading packages and let me tell you its some of the hardest work I have ever done.Most of the employees loading these packages work under unfavorable conditions are underpaid and disgruntled.These part time employees work one of two four hour shifts where they are squeezed as much labor out of them as physically possible.The number of packages that traverse these hubs on a daily basis is hard to put into context.I do not know the numbers but what I can tell you is that I personally handled about 3000 packages a day at a medium size hub with about 50 to 100 employees per shift most of whom are either loaders, unloaders or sorters.
