… AND REMAINS is made up from alternative mixes / takes and live recordings that were superfluous to the two Omnibus Editions and were offering it as a bonus thank you to fans who pre-order both of the box sets direct from this site. TRACK LISTING
1. Bela Lugosi’s Dead – Tomb Raider Mix
This is a new mix based on the Hammersmith Palais ’81 live performance (the same as on ‘Press The Eject’). We wanted to include a live disc with ‘In The Flat Field’ Omnibus Edition but only one official recording was made of a show (at ULU). The tape was a live monitor mix so the sound balance was way out with Daniel’s guitar recorded far too low in the mix. Sadly there were no multi-tracks so a re-mix wasn’t possible. These are the only 3 tracks worth salvaging from the tape. It’s a shame, as audience bootlegs show that Bauhaus were always a dynamic live band right from their early shows.
7. Poem
Recorded at Space Place, Chicago 9 September 1980
This is from a bootleg and it’s a bit of fun that Peter employed during some of the 1980 shows.

Mask (Omnibus Edition) by Bauhaus

Recording for Bauhaus' sophomore long player commenced in early 1981 and the following nine
months saw a broadening of their palette to construct a more ebullient album around the musical
catharsis. Mask's entangled genesis is chronicled in this limited edition box set which features
unreleased early versions and rejected out-takes of many of the songs. Additionally this release
includes a complete 1981 live show that captures the band at their incendiary best.

Managing the sometimes hard-to-negotiate trick of expanding their sound while retaining all the
qualities which got them attention to begin with, on Mask the members of Bauhaus consciously
stretched themselves into newer areas of music and performance, resulting in an album that was
arguably even better than the band's almost flawless debut. More familiar sides of the band were
apparent from the get-go; opening number "Hair of the Dog," one of the band's best songs, starts with a double-tracked squalling guitar solo before turning into a stomping, surging flow, carefully paced by sudden silences and equally sudden returns to the music, while Murphy details cases of mental addictions in pithy phrases. The energy wasn't all just explosive angst and despair, though; the onetwo punches of "Kick in the Eye" and "In Fear of Fear" have as much hip-shaking groove and upbeat swing to them as portentous gloom (Ash's sax skronk on the latter, as well as on the similarly sharp "Dancing," is a particularly nice touch). Elsewhere, numerous flashes of the band's quirky sense of humour - something often missed by both fanatical followers and negative critics both - make an appearance; perhaps most amusing is the dry spoken-word lyric beginning "Of Lilies and Remains," as David J details a goofily grotesque situation as much Edward Gorey as Edgar Allen Poe. Add to that three of the most dramatic things the band ever recorded - the charging, keyboard-accompanied "The Passion of Lovers," the slow, dark fairy-tale-gone-wrong "Hollow Hills," and the wracked, trudging title track, where the sudden appearance of an acoustic guitar turns a great song into a near-perfect blend of ugliness and sheer beauty - and the end result was a perfect trouncing of the sophomore-slump myth.
- Ned Raggett : All Music Guide

The re-mastered set includes Mask, a second disc of the non-album singles, previously unreleased
demos and alternative versions plus a newly mixed 1981 live show on the third disc. This Omnibus
Edition is presented as a limited edition box set with the three CD’s in Japanese-style paper
sleeves, reproducing the original (gatefold) vinyl cover art, accompanied by a 48 page book
that traces the development of the album with rare memorabilia and photographs and contains
the complete lyrics.

CD1 MASK
Hair Of The Dog
The Passion Of Lovers
Of Lilies And Remains
Dancing
Hollow Hills
Kick In The Eye (2)
In Fear Of Fear
Muscle In Plastic
The Man With X-Ray Eyes
Mask

CD2 SINGLES & OUT-TAKES
Kick In The Eye (original single version A side)
Satori (single B side)
In Fear Of Fear (original version) *
In Fear Of Dub
Muscle In Plastic (rough mix version) *
Dancing (rough mix version) *
Hair Of The Dog (rough mix version) *
Monkey (Poison Pen) (rough mix version) *
Ziggy Stardust (rough demo version) *
Earwax (full unedited version) *
1-2-3-4 (single B-side)
Muscle In Plastic (rejected album mix) *
Hollow Hills (rejected album mix) *
Hair Of The Dog (rejected album mix) *
Poison Pen *
Kick In The Eye (single re-mix version)
Dave and Danny’s Waspie Dub (# 2) *
*PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED

CD3 THIS IS FOR WHEN - LIVE
This Is For When...
The Passion Of Lovers
In The Flat Field
Silent Hedges
In Fear Of Fear
Terror Couple Kill Colonel
The Man With X-Ray Eyes
Dancing
Mask
Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores
Hair Of The Dog
Kick In The Eye
A God In An Alcove
Hollow Hills
Stigmata Martyr
Dark Entries
Bela Lugosi’s Dead

In The Flat Field (Omnibus Edition) by Bauhaus

Since its release in 1980 to generally indifferent reviews, Bauhaus' debut album has grown in stature and is now appreciated as an innovative foundation stone of 'Goth' music. Peaking at number one and remaining on the UK 'Indie' chart for over two years, this dynamic collection defies categorisation, offering an incendiary tinderbox of driving jagged rhythms, screeching guitars, brooding atmospherics, provocative lyrics and wildly animated vocals.

Few debut albums ever arrived so nearly perfectly formed; that In the Flat Field practically single-handedly invented what remains for many as the stereotype of goth music - wracked, at times spindly vocals about despair and desolation of many kinds, sung over mysterious and moody music - demonstrates the sui generis power of both the band and its work. This said, perhaps the best thing about the album isn't what it's supposed to sound like, but what it actually does - an awesomely powerful, glam-inspired rock band firing on all fours, capable of restraint and complete overdrive both, fronted by a charismatic, storming frontman. Starting with the challenging angst of "Double Dare," with shattering guitar over a curious but fierce stop-start rhythm while Murphy rages ever more strongly over the top, In the Flat Field contains a wide variety of inspirations and
ideas. The astonishingly precise rhythm section of David J and Haskins pulls off a variety of jaw-dropping performances, including the high-paced tension of the title track and the brooding crawl from "Spy in the Cab." Ash, much like his longtime hero Mick Ronson, turns out to be a master of turning relatively simple guitar parts into apocalyptic explosions, from the background fills on "St. Vitus Dance" to the brutal descending chords of "Stigmata Martyr." Murphy, meanwhile, channels as much Iggy Pop as he does Bowie, proving to be no simple copyist of either, able to both maniacally sing-shout and take a somewhat lighter touch throughout. Concluding with the seven-minute "Nerves," an aptly titled piece that alternates between understated energy and unleashed power toward a dramatic ending, In the Flat Field started off Bauhaus' album career with a near-perfect bang.
- Ned Raggett : All Music Guide

The re-mastered set includes In The Flat Field restored to it’s original sequence plus a second disc of the non-album singles, previously unreleased out-takes and alternative versions. This Omnibus Edition is presented as a limited edition box set with the two CD’s in Japanese-style paper sleeves, reproducing the original vinyl cover art, accompanied by a 48 page book that chronologically details the genesis of the album with rare memorabilia and photographs and contains the complete lyrics.

The Doomsday EP by Elvis Perkins In Dearland

We call this thing The Doomsday EP for obvious reasons, and its middle name to which it also answers is “The EP of the Id.” Being drawn to the many faces of the American strain it seems we have more or less subconsciously produced a collection speaking to and/or from several of them at once. It’s a document of impulses sleeping egos and their superiors let pass to tape. I myself didn’t know what these songs sounded like in the hands of EPID until they were processed and played back. You have a song that arrived like the rest of us by boat, a selection from the Sacred Harp, a rock ‘n roll heralding the eternal advent of rock ‘n roll, an ode to the soul of the undead and, finally (and firstly), two takes on a single song called Doomsday, one which comes from our March release and the other which leans in the direction of its original conception as something of a gospel number . And here they all are, risen from their cribs and graves, under one moonlight while their folks and undertakers look the other way.
- Elvis Perkins

The Life Of The World To Come by The Mountain Goats

The Mountain Goats have been making records since that mythical time when the term “tape-only label” didn’t require any elaborate explanation, but have been recording and touring in their current incarnation since 2007. That current incarnation consists of John Darnielle, Peter Hughes & Jon Wurster, who, having toured Australia, England, and the U.S. several times (and a cruise ship once), recorded The Life of the World to Come across three studios with three producers from April through June of 2009: with Brandon Eggleston at Chicago’s Electrical Audio; with John Congleton at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas; and with Scott Solter at Baucom Road in Monroe, North Carolina. Owen Pallet, with whom the band shared a stage in Australia this past January at the Meredith Music Festival, arranged & played strings. The Life of the World to Come’s 12 songs all originate, one way or another, in the Bible, though none of the band, as of press time, had joined the Vineyard Fellowship.PLEASE NOTE: The lottery for purple vinyl copies of this release is now over.

1979 The Live EPs by Gary Numan

This CD features the original mixes from the recordings made on the 1979 tour and sounds very good indeed (salutes for mastering man extraodinaire, John Dent). While the songs were principally mixed for use on the soundtrack to the video ‘The Touring Principle’, two of the recordings, ‘Bombers’ and ‘Me, I Disconnect From You’, were issued as ‘B’ sides to the single ‘Complex’ on 24 November. The latter track, along with ‘Metal’ ‘Conversation’and ‘Down In The Park’ had also been mixed without audience applause as mime tracks for a televised benefit concert in aid of ‘Year Of The Child’ at Wembley Arena on 22 November. Though it’s unlikely this sequence was ever intended for release, the mixes have a drier vocal and are slightly different to the LO ’79 ones. It was in January 1980 that four tracks were selected for a potential EP but the project was abandoned and two of these songs, ‘Remember I Was Vapour’ and ‘On Broadway’ used on a free 7” single included with original copies of the ‘Telekon’ album. Further songs from the concert were released in April 1981 on the album ‘Living Ornaments ‘79’ and these are mixes used for this release. The entire show was re-mixed and released in the correct performance sequence on a double CD in 1998. The disc is packaged in a Japanese style cardboard sleeve with an inner sleeve and plastic disc jacket. January 1980 EP
Down In The Park
On Broadway
Every Day I Die
Remember I Was Vapour
Single B side
Bombers
November 1979 Tape
Me I Disconnect From You
Conversation
Metal
Down in the Park
Living Ornaments ’79
Airlane
Cars
We Are So Fragile
Films
Something’s In The House
My Shadow In Vain
Conversation
The Dream Police
Metal

The Pleasure Principle (Expanded Edition) by Gary Numan

The Pleasure Principle (Expanded Edition)
Gary Numan’s solo debut album – up until this point he’d still been recording as Tubeway Army – signaled a major shift in his career. With The Pleasure Principle , Numan connected with the public consciousness in this period in ways that still resonate today.

The Pleasure Principle was the point where the singer became a huge international solo star, even reaching the Top 10 in the United States with ‘Cars’ and Top 20 with the album. The Pleasure Principle pioneered electronic pop music on a new scale – it was a much bigger success worldwide than Kraftwerk’s releases or anything from the influential but still relatively ‘culty’ Bowie/Eno Berlin trilogy. And the fact that it was different and had a major impact in US – Numan performed ‘Cars’ and ‘Praying To The Aliens’ in front of 40 million people on the Saturday Night Live Show – means that there’s a direct link from The Pleasure Principle to the new musical forms that were born in the USA over the next decade – namely hip hop, industrial and techno.

As the NME noted recently, ‘every hip-hop production titan ever – notably Dr Dre – has nicked the opening beats from the track ‘Films’. The likes of Timbaland and The Neptunes’ minimal pop – comprised of just exquisitely produced drums and simplistic synthlines – are heralded as being futuristic genius in the 21st century; The Pleasure Principle shows that Gary Numan was doing the same thing 25 years previously. His influence on hip-hop, while rarely recognized, is enormous. His influence on electronic music in general is unparalleled.’ When GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan covered ‘Films’ in 2008, he really was taking hip hop back to its roots as the track features one of the original break beats (in fact, Films appeared on the hugely influential Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilation series in the early 1980s).

In industrial music both Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and Marilyn Manson have name checked Numan as a significant source of inspiration: ‘After hearing ‘Cars’ I knew I wanted to make music with synthesizers,’ says Reznor, ‘The Pleasure Principle is f***ing great because it’s so cold sounding.’ While techno pioneers ranging from Carl Craig to Juan Atkins were grabbed by this strange, futuristic music, creating a relationship between Numan and dance music that has spawned the likes of the Basement Jaxx’s ‘Where’s Your Head At’ (samples ‘M.E.’ from The Pleasure Principle) and the ‘Cars’-mutating ‘Koochy’ by Armand Van Helden.

Features of The Pleasure Principle (Expanded Edition):

•2 disc set packaged in a jewelbox with slipcase and a 16 page book featuring photographs
from The Pleasure Principle recording sessions and new liner notes.

•Newly remastered from original analogue tapes.

•Second disc containing unreleased demo recordings and studio out-takes.

CD1
Airlane
Metal
Complex
Films
M.E.
Tracks
Observer
Conversation
Cars
Engineers

CD2
Airlane (Demo version)
Metal (Demo version)
Complex (Demo version)
Films (Demo version)
M.E. The xx arrive with their debut album xx - a whole new sound of love, loss and longing. Their unique make-up is an inadvertent second nature marriage of 2009’s urban/guitar tribes, in one corner fluttering new wave indebted reverberation, in the other, plumes of post-dubstep sub-bass and figuratively, their defining core of rich R&B vocal textures. If It all reads on paper like some potentially post-modern hotchpotch, then this makes their timeless results all the more alluring. The enveloping vocal partnership of Romy and Oliver is one that would’ve dropped-jaws in any decade this century, and set amidst a shivering soundscape of beats and plucks, their bedroom-reared concrete-soul is being justly heralded as the UK’s most original and treasured alt. pop artifact of late.

In an effort not to draw too much distance from the DIY aesthetic of their early demos, which were recorded in their bedrooms, they recorded their debut album xx under no one’s watch, other than engineer Rodaidh McDonald, at XL Recordings’ west London in-house studio. The result a wash of sexy, coy, cold and sad rhythms and melodies the likes of Robert Smith, Massive Attack and The Streets.

Taken by Trees is the nom de plume of Victoria Bergsman, previously best known for her work with The Concretes and Peter Bjorn & John’s worldwide smash hit single "Young Folks". East Of Eden follows Taken By Trees debut album Open Field which was released in 2007.

Victoria Bergsman wanted to travel to record in a mysterious, relatively uncharted area avoiding the usual clinical studio experience, which she has always disliked and found to be an uncreative environment. She chose Pakistan. The rhythm, drums and flutes of Pakistani music had long captivated Victoria and this, coupled with a deep admiration for her favorite singers Abida Parveen and the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, helped her choose Pakistan as the place to record her new album. Another attractive factor was her interest in Sufi musicians who play in order to enter a trance like state, using music to transport themselves to another time and place.

Victoria is one of very few Western women, if not the only one, to record in this region, and the bureaucracy, cultural differences and prejudices she had to overcome to see this project through are almost beyond belief. It’s therefore little short of a miracle that this album was recorded at all.
The new album will be accompanied by a short film that documents the recording. Watch that film here.

Possessing an expansive sound that marries a coarse folk ingenuity with the bold pop sensibility of an R&B siren, BiRd-BrAiNs was assembled with a staunch DIY aesthetic. Recording herself using a digital voice recorder and produced using shareware mixing software, she was described by Stereogum as “a self-contained Sublime Frequencies compilation, jumping between blues, African tunes, shiny reggae-esque sprawls, and lo-fi folk”, infusing the worldly sonic palette of M.I.A. or post-punk pioneers The Raincoats.

Having played across the U.S. and taken SXSW and ATP by storm, tUnE-yArDs will be touring Europe throughout September with Dirty Projectors. The album ranges from the surreal to the sublime, with ‘Lions’ described by Pitchfork as “halfway between a singsong schoolyard rhyme and a graveyard blues” whilst ‘Jamaican’ could be the blueprint to a Timbaland-produced gem with it’s ricocheting drums pattern and intoxicating tape loops.

The record receives a limited edition CD screen-printed release, prior to a full release later in the year.

Speaking about BiRd-BrAiNs, Merrill comments: “It is a patchwork of sound snippets, of history in a present tense. It is a composer’s commitment to the preservation of stories, however small and unassuming.”
It is a composer’s commitment to the preservation of stories, however small and unassuming.” SUNLIGHT (mp3) </itunes:summary>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.beggarsgroupusa.com/mp3/tUnE-yArDs_SUNLIGHT.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Everything Is New by Jack Penate

For his second album Jack decided to rip it up and start again. Totally start again. Total honesty, absolute vision, complete control.

The result is Everything Is New, a soul record. Recorded over twelve intense months in producer Paul Epworth's (Bloc Party, Friendly Fires) own west London home studio, Everything Is New is a giant musical leap forward from this 24 year old Londoner’s acclaimed debut album.

Everything Is New is a technicolour record full of experimentation and possibility. Featuring the blissed-out house grooves of first single “Tonight’s Today” and swaggering soul of anthemic new single “Be The One”, the album fuses Peñate’s wide-eyed pop songwriting with the music he’s always loved and lived, successfully bringing Brazilian Tropicala, Krautrock, New Orleans marching bands, Bashment, Afrobeat, lo-fi Hop Hop, Gospel, Reggaeton and Phily Soul into the mix over a nine track record that delights and surprises at every turn.

So here it is. Nine tracks. No filler. An ambitious, timeless, lo-fi soul record. Everything Is New.

True Romance by Golden Silvers

the best way to understand Golden Silvers’ magical first album True Romance: it’s a properly soulful liberation. Lovelorn, charmingly eccentric, literate, starry-eyed, earthy and glowing warm with empathy, the ten sun-dappled songs within – built from an unfussy bed of sweet three-part harmonies, keys, bass and drums – are infectious without ever nagging, clever rather than arch and completely their own. “Queen of the 21st Century”, a skewed psychedelic terrace stomp, sits happily with the swaggering, Prince-ly funk of the title track, a trippy, mystical and mediaeval-sounding “The Seed” and the rinky-dink but raucously anthemic “Magic Touch”, all corralled into a giddy, excitable line by a kind of futuristic doo-wop.

“I know it doesn’t describe much me going, ‘Yeah, we wanted to make it so it sounded great,’” says Gwil, “but that’s what we did. We wanted to approach each song differently, which means people will go, ‘Oh, that’s bonkers.’ But listen to The Beatles’ Revolver. Every song is different and yet it’s a classic. I don’t see why we’ve gone so far backwards that we now just get the same type of song, the same sound all the time.”

Following last years two rapturously-received independent singles (‘Arrows Of Eros’ and ‘Magic Touch / Another Universe’), enthusiastic critics have already compared Golden Silvers to the likes of The Beach Boys, Tyrannosaurus Rex, The Coral, Super Furry Animals and Prince to conjure a description for their brassy, keys-driven psychedelia. Meanwhile, Gwil himself says he always wanted to play piano like Hendrix played guitar (just listen to Golden Silvers’ darkly wiggy “Shakes”) and that when he was learning how to write he studied Dylan like a man possessed. “It’d be beautiful if you could open your mouth and sing like Marvin Gaye but that’s what put me off for so long, the thought I could never do that. But when I started singing Bob I was like, actually...”

But for all the talk of brilliant, instinctive songwriting and classic influences, Golden Silvers are a very modern outfit, as familiar with Metronomy as they are Mystery Jets. They were bred on Erol Alkan’s indie-electro crossover, which the feted DJ began to beckon from his decks at Trash, Golden Silvers’ regular Monday night haunt. They’ve also employed the help of latest producer wunderkind Lexx (Esser, Crystal Castles) to produce their debut album and the band run their own night, The Bronze Club at Hoxton’s Macbeth, where they call on their fellow purveyors of weird, wonderful music to come and play, like The Invisible and Micachu And The Shapes.

Riceboy Sleeps by Riceboy Sleeps

Known primarily for his haunting falsetto and other-worldly presence as the singer in
Sigur Rós, Jon Thor Birgisson has - together with his partner Alex Somers - been exhibit-
ing artwork and staging exhibitions under the name Riceboy Sleeps for two or three years
now, including the release of a limited edition picture book. A couple of months back
the early fruits of the musical side of this collaboration surfaced in physical form for the
first time, with the track “Happiness”, on the exemplary Dark Was The Night Red Hot
compilation.

Riceboy Sleeps is human in a profound and verging-on spiritual way. It says nothing, liter-
ally, and yet living through its 68-minutes you emerge feeling much has been revealed.
Its slowly evolving abstract landscapes are both edifying and life-affirming. The record
works as a whole, and exists in a contemplative dream-state, unconstrained and mesmeric,
seemingly outside time.

The record, however, is more active than its apparent antecedents in the ambient output of
Brian Eno, and other deliberately low-impact works. Riceboy Sleeps is awash with both
tension and stimuli, as well as being frequently, and stunningly, beautiful.

Played solely on acoustic instruments in Iceland (and featuring long-time string col-
laborators Amiina, as well as the Kopavogsdaetur choir) and then endlessly toyed with
on solar-powered laptops in a raw food commune in some far corner of Hawaii, Riceboy
Sleeps has a suitably, uh, “organic feel” to it; the wave-like lapping of its tidal flow buried
beneath analogue hiss, crackle, pulse and distortion; the creaking of rigging and sometime
indeterminate falling delicately over; and, on “Howl”, ruminative animal chirrups, grunts,
snorts and purrs.

Yorkshire is full of towns where nothing much happens, or so they'd have you believe. Laura Groves either didn't hear, didn't believe or simply knew better and on the edge of seventeen began writing songs. With an old family piano and a borrowed guitar, thinking of the records she loved, lyrics that broke her heart, phrasing that made it race, composers cradling her aspirations. Influences spanning genres and generations; from Bartók to Bush, Tiersen to Tears For Fears, Debussy to Du Maurier. She dreamt of writing, arranging, performing and producing an album that would be as treasured by someone else, and hopefully inspire them in the same way.

The journey from then until now has not only given her more years, but more confidence, more experience of life, the courage to let the music express when words seem too restrictive. The name Blue Roses is encompassing; it is more than just one person and their sole aspirations, it is what happened in making the album- this process gave the need for another, more representative name. Blue Roses is the story, with Laura Groves as the protagonist. Included is a cast of family members to play instruments and a choir of firm friends, acquaintances and perfect strangers gathered together in a café to help. A small amount of money and a little faith was stretched with the benevolence and enthusiasm of those who stood at each door. From recording in living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms in various houses, to recording a Steinway in a local piano shop (a millionaire, who despite having paid a five-figure sum for the concert grand piano, was enchanted enough by the story and the music to allow Laura to record with it before it was moved to entertain guests his Lake District hotel). The equipment graciously bought and generously lent, (most of which was older than Laura herself, some of which was of pensionable age) put her on a sonic par with her idols and instilled in her a romance which translated through the Neumann, the Gibson and Wurlitzer, the Neve. The valves, the plates, the springs, the tape, transformers and circuitry are as musical as the instruments and voices passing through them, and are part of the story, the colour between the lines.
