Anthology by Throwing Muses

On the 25th anniversary of Throwing Muses debut album release, 4AD are issuing the first ever compilation of the bands work, simply entitled Anthology. Compiled by the band, the 21 track selection eschews most of the singles in favour of personal favourites, and enjoys a non-chronological sequence which makes for interesting juxtapositions and encourages
a reassessment of the music. The initial, limited release comes in a hardback book with a bonus 22 track CD of B-sides and rarities. Founded by step sisters Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly and featuring the unconventional drumming of David Narcizo, Throwing Muses - the first American act to sign to 4AD - have consistently created challenging music with shifting tempos, creative chord progressions, unorthodox song structures and surreal lyrics. In light of the release of Anthology, Kristin Hersh had this to say:”It’s beautiful and substantial, thanks to awesome David Narcizo / Lakuna Design - a chunky, 28 page hardcover booklet and two CDs - one CD consisting of a hand-selected retrospective track-list by Kristin, David and Bernard, and on the other the collected b-sides, including the original Lonely is an Eyesore version of Fish, the long-lost Hillbilly and the
original version of Back Road (Matter of Degrees). And yes, the release will be supported by Throwing Muses live dates.”
mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> Strange Mercy, the beguiling new album from St. Vincent, is an unsparing examination of personal catharsis cloaked in some of the most sublime music of Annie Clark's career. “Many of the songs are about wanting relief from pain, and searching high and low for release,” attests Clark. Such powerful emotions prompted — demanded, really — not just a bracingly candid lyrical style but a new musical approach. St. Vincent's acclaimed 2007 debut album Marry Me was created almost entirely on a laptop; the exquisite follow-up, 2009's Actor, was a collection of arrangements fashioned into ornately structured songs. Strange Mercy, she says, is different. "I just wrote the songs first and didn't worry about the embellishments. On the last album, I could play about three songs by myself on guitar. On this album, I can play every song that way." Strange Mercy features very little of the baroque strings, woodwinds, and reeds that marked Actor, and the grooves are sturdy, deep and beguiling. "I wanted to make things direct and immediate," Clark says. "I didn't tinker. I tried to keep the arrangements pretty simple and use just enough instrumentation to get the point across. I didn't want anything to get in the way." Consequently, it's a much more guitar-oriented album than Clark has ever made. Clark is one of the most gifted guitarists to come along in the new millennium, and Strange Mercy is filigreed with indelible hooklines and ingenious rhythm parts, not to mention a concise and debonair solo on "Neutered Fruit" and a couple of Frippy freakouts on the glorious "Northern Lights."
And with all that musical real estate opened up, Clark literally sings more on Strange Mercy than on the previous two — there was just much more to say. So the voice is paramount, shape-shifting to the demands of each song: on "Chloe in the Afternoon," Clark goes breathless and high; on "Cruel," she's practically wailing; she's languorous on "Surgeon" and r&b-inflected on the title track and "Dilettante." Clark again conjured her impeccably vivid soundscapes with brilliant producer/engineer John Congleton (Okkervil River, Wye Oak, Explosions in the Sky). Ace modern gospel organist Bobby Sparks "did all the really sexy keyboard parts," Clark says, helping to take St. Vincent's music where it hadn't gone before. Midlake's McKenzie Smith reprised his Actor role and once again played drums. Also contributing were Daniel Hart, Evan Smith and Beck's musical director Brian LeBarton.
"Chloe in the Afternoon" is a stunning opener, vaguely sinister and frankly kinky, serving notice of the album's intense candor and darkling tone. "Cruel" is St. Vincent you can dance to, like some phantasmagorical Abba track. The aqueous confessional "Cheerleader" is the thematic touchstone; Clark is just not going to politely mince words (or sounds) anymore. "Surgeon" blurs the line between summer daze and barbiturate haze, its suave '60s Euro-pop miraculously morphing into a slinky disco inferno, keyboards dissolving into a blaze of hysteria. The heartbreaking "Strange Mercy" is an almost Hendrixy ballad, the album's soulful core, strong at a broken place.
Strange Mercy is what happens when the very picture of elegance and poise confronts turmoil and grief: You can either gaze in mute despair at those pieces lying on the floor, or you can make something beautiful, even transcendent out of them, but only by confronting yourself. "Marry Me is very cute — it's funny and sarcastic, and that's fine, I was 22 and that's who I was," Clark says. "And Actor was cerebral — not that I would have known how to do it any differently — but I’ve grown beyond that now. I want to make a record that's more human every time."

		LP includes MP3 download coupon

Southend England’s, The Horrors, are back with their third studio album, set to release on August 9, 2011 (XL Recordings). After releasing their sophomore album, Primary Colours (pro- duced by Portishead’s Geoff Barrow), in May 2009, NME made it a point to ask, “Is The Horrors’ Primary Colours The Most Remarkable Second Album Reinvention Ever?” It seems so judging from the critical reaction and adoring fans who came out in droves to see The Horrors on tour throughout 2009 - both headlining and supporting The Kills and Nine Inch Nails.
One of the most
talented producers of a generation and someone capable of negotiating skilfully between genres, be it jungle, dubstep, rave,
garage or whatever tag you want to put on it. Couple this
with the numerous and incredible 12”s, EPs and remixes that
have been aired over the past five years and it’s clear just
why he’s built quite a heady reputation for himself. It’s been over two and a half years since he released his debut album,
Where Were U In ‘92?, a rave record evoking that titular period, when Dreamscape, Fantazia and Universe flyers adorned bedroom walls, tape packs and pills became a national staple, and the Daily Mail were only hours away from their next denouncement. Using early-90s equipment like an Akai S2000 and an Atari ST, he captured the moment; “a history lesson, a depiction of a musical timeline that folds in on itself, and a revival that works because it approaches its subject
with the idea that it simply evolved instead of died,” (Pitchfork).

Following a series of releases that switched from the melancholic to the menacing, Where Were U In ‘92? further marked the producer out as an unpredictable, underground hero. Among discerning listeners, anticipation for new Zomby material is now high but outside of him teasing fans with a few out-takes via the internet, there hasn’t been much to go by in recent times. That was until the end of last year when hauntingly beautiful new track, 'Natalia's Song', appeared unannounced in a Burial and Kode9 mix for Radio 1. Catching people off-guard, it served to pour fuel on the fire
and leave all anticipating what was to follow. Having signed a worldwide deal with 4AD, that wait is almost over. ‘Natalia’s Song’ is being afforded a proper release on May 10th and is also included on his second album, Dedication, which is being released two months later in July. A wholly different record to its predecessor, Zomby returns from his hiatus with typical style. It is both a dark and absorbing listen that engulfs the listener, running between sparse electronics, techno hooks and minimal piano riffs.
Making up for lost time, Dedication continues to put Zomby at
a distance from his peers. By the time they’ve caught up,
he’ll no doubt be somewhere else entirely.

Weird Pop by Tones On Tail

As is the case with many popular bands that had relatively brief and productive careers, Tones on Tail's oeuvre has been collected many times in many forms. This 19-track double LP features all of Tones On Tail's crucial tracks including most of thePop album, the best songs from Tones on Tail EP, and the singles "Go!," "Twist," plus "Christian Says." It lacks only a trio of songs from Pop and some miscellaneous odds and ends. Night Music was a welcome release at in 1987, marking Tones on Tail's first appearance on CD. It has since been superseded by the almost aptly named Everything! compilation. This new compilation brings back the classic vinyl sound and includes previously undiscovered rarities like the original (and better) version of "Performance," a never before released studio version of "Heartbreak Hotel", the single edit of "Go!," plus an extended version of "Twist". Weird Pop serves as a concise summary of Tones On Tail's career, effectively showcasing both their skewed pop and their darker, more experimental material.
