WordPress has always aimed towards making its CMS more flexible for its users. Following this, they have added the feature to add captions and subtitles to videos using the Web Video Text Tracks Format (WebVTT) . This feature gives us the ability to add captions and subtitles to videos.

There is an option now in the Gutenberg editor, which allows you to add a Web Video Text Tracks Format (WebVTT) file to a Video Block. 

You can click on the Video block and then click on the ‘Text Tracks’ button to attach/upload a VTT file to your video.

What is a WebVTT file?

A WebVTT file is a plain-text document. It uses the (soon to be) W3C specification to mark up external text track resources in connection with the HTML <track> element.

A WebVTT (.vtt) file has a simple code specifying a range of time, i.e., 00:11.000 –> 00:13.000, and the text you want to appear, i.e., <v Roger Bingham>We are in New York City, this will now show as a caption or subtitle during that timeframe.

Here is an example of a WebVTT file that captions an interview:

You can use free online tools like Subtitle Edit Online to create video captions and then save them in .vtt format. It is a simple tool, but it’s free, so it is a little clumsy to use.

Method 3: Use a text editor like Notepad

You can create a VTT file using Notepad. You can start by writing WEBVTT at the top; after that, you can add the subsequent entries called ‘cues.’ Cues consist of the range of time with your captions or subtitles. 

Example:

00:01.000 –> 00:04.000

Welcome to our video.

Use an “arrow”, –> to separate start time & end time. Use colons (:) to separate hours and minutes, and use period (.) to separate minutes and seconds, like this: 00:35.500. Always remember to add hours and seconds, even if it’s a ‘0’. 

Note: The instruction given above is for the new time-marker format, which is hh:mm.sss = 00:35.500. If this doesn’t work for you, then you might want to try the old time-marker format: hh:mm:ss.ttt = 00:00:05.330. The ‘ttt’ here stands for thousandths of a second.

After writing the code, when you save the file in the File Name box, write the .vtt filename extension. Use the quotation marks (“) to enclose the whole name: “Myfile.vtt”. Now, select All Files (*.*) in the Save as type box to ensure it is saved with the .vtt extension. In the Encoding box, select UTF-8 to display complex and international characters accurately.

Method 4: Use Conversion tools

If you already have subtitles in any other format, you can use a conversion tool to convert it into a .vtt format and then upload it to your site.

Tip – You can visit https://www.w3.org to learn various codes for creating WEBVTT files in different styles.

As we know, the Gutenberg editor has become the default editor in WordPress. Some users still prefer the Classic Editor over the Gutenberg (Block) Editor. But this new Block Editor is more flexible, has more features, looks modern and appealing to the eyes.

When we want to create a layout using block editor, we have to add sets of blocks. It requires a lot of work to create a perfect layout. For someone who doesn’t have much experience in this, the thought of creating sets of blocks can be scary. Just think about the services layout, it is not easy to create something like this.

The block patterns will completely change the game. Basically block patterns can be said as a ready made collection of different blocks. It can help in creating complex layouts easily and with a few simple clicks.

How to Use Block Patterns

To use the block patterns, you’d first click on + button, which is used to add a new block.

This will open the screen from where you can add new blocks, and also add new Patterns.

Now you can go to the Patterns panel and choose your desired pattern.

Let’s say you want to add buttons to your post/page. Go to Patterns and choose your desired Buttons layout. Two or Three are the options we have now. Just click on it, and it’s going to insert the buttons to your post/page.

Of course this is a simpler example, but it should give you the idea of how the block patterns work. Let’s take the Services layout, for example. You can go to the Patterns section, and click on your desired Services layout and it’s done, just like that.

For example, let’s say you’d like to add a “pricing” layout. For this you can search for this pricing block and then directly install it from the editor. This will install the block instantly without navigating away from the page and then you can start editing/customizing the newly installed block. That’s really easy, right?

To remove the newly installed block, you can simply go to the Plugins page and from there you can deactivate and remove it.

WordPress auto-update feature for Plugin and Theme Explained

Firstly, lets understand why this feature is so useful. WordPress plugin and theme regularly release the updates, be it for any security related issues, bug fixes or improvement. The problem was that the user had to login to WordPress admin and then update the plugin and theme manually and for some users, this was a hassle (as it was a manual task).

Now with WordPress 5.5, there isn’t a need to manually update plugins and themes but this process has become automatic; provided you enable the auto update option in WordPress.

Enable Auto update for Plugins

So without any further ado, let’s learn how to enable this option. Login to your WordPress admin, go to Plugins > Installed Plugins page.

From here, for the plugin for which you want to enable the auto update, click on the button for “Enable auto-updates”.

Once you do this, it will show “Enabling” and then once the auto update is enabled, the option would change to “Disable auto-update”.

In case if you’d like to disable auto update for your plugin, you’d simply click on the “Disable auto-update” button.

Enable Auto update for Theme

If you’d like to enable auto update for theme, then go to Appearance > Themes page.

Click on a Theme from this page, and then you’d see the option for “Enable auto-updates”.

Its that easy to enable auto update for WordPress themes and plugins. You can visit the same page to disable the auto update in case if you change your mind.

If you enable auto update for theme, then please note that it might overwrite the existing changes that you’ve made in the theme, especially in the theme files. For example, let’s say you’ve added a CSS change in the style.css. In this case, enabling auto update will overwrite that changes with the theme update.
