AC/DC’s Angus Young Tops Australian Poll for Best Aussie Guitarist

Eternal schoolboy Angus Young is still at the head of the class. Readers of Australian Guitar Magazine recently named the AC/DC axeman the best Australian guitarist of all time. The poll, which the Sydney Morning Herald calls “a highly scientific survey of Australia’s musical terrain,” was put together by three Australian guitar-playing music writers, including frequent GuitarWorld.com contributor Peter Hodgson . The report says they troubled themselves less with the guitarists’ origins (Young was born in Scotland, for instance), genre and gender (only two women made the original list of 50 players) than with what sounds awesome

Gibson Acoustic Releases Sheryl Crow Southern Jumbo Special Edition Guitar

Gibson Acoustic and Sheryl Crow announce their second collaboration with the release of the Sheryl Crow Southern Jumbo Special Edition. This new Southern Jumbo is the most advanced acoustic-electric Southern Jumbo available. In 2010, Crow modified her entire live acoustic guitar lineup with the same new and advanced pickup system used in the Gibson Jackson Browne model released earlier that year. After an extensive in-studio comparison of guitars and pickups, the idea for her Southern Jumbo Special Edition was born. Crow’s new Southern Jumbo is built for power and projection with wider X-bracing on the red spruce top. With mahogany back and sides, the combination of wood and pattern bracing gives this SJ a dynamic and responsive tonal range unlike any Southern Jumbo Gibson has built.

Interview: Fear Factory Guitarist Dino Cazares Discusses Making ‘The Industrialist,’ Lineup Changes and Gear

After welcoming guitarist Dino Cazares back into the band and putting out a successful seventh studio album, Mechanize , in early 2010, modern metal giants Fear Factory have returned. Their follow-up album, The Industrialist , is ready to release early next month. This conceptual record also features bassist Matt DeVries, who replaced Byron Stroud. I caught up with Cazares on May 15 to discuss the making of the album, lineup changes and his gear setup. Garage rock bands are usually known for their effort, as opposed to their skill; more sweat than style, in other words. We listen to bands that take their act on the road day in and day out, taking few breaks and seeing roadies more than their families. Bands that leave their mark on the stage literally, with blood, sweat and maybe a few tears.

Guitar 101: Learning Harmony Through Six-Note Hexatonic Scales, Part 2

Last time we learned how to combine two completely different triads (three-note chords) to create a six-note hexatonic scale. Using E major and F# minor triads to illustrate, we generated the blissful, gospel-flavored E major hexatonic scale (E F# G# A B C#) and looked at some neat examples of the many things you can do with it. As I mentioned at the end of the lesson, there’s a virtual mother lode of cool and unusual hexatonic scales waiting to be unearthed. All you have to do to find them is combine any two triads that don’t share any common tones (hint: combining E major and E minor won’t give you six different notes because both triads contain E and B).

3 Inches of Blood Post "Look Out" Lyric Video as Tribute to Ronnie James Dio

Today marks the two-year anniversary of the death of the legendary Ronnie James Dio. A variety of Dio tributes have been paid from all around the metal community, and Canadian metal band 3 Inches of Blood decided to pay homage by releasing a special lyric video for their song “Look Out,” off their latest album, Long Live Heavy Metal . The track was written as a tribute to Dio and, according to vocalist Cam Pipes, wasn’t an easy song to write.

Reverend Horton Heat to Headline Revival Festival in Austin, Texas

Reverend Horton Heat has been named the headliner at this year’s Revival Festival, an annual rockabilly and Americana festival in Austin, Texas. This year’s event, the fifth annual show, takes place May 26 at 7th Street and Trinity Avenue in downtown Austin. Other bands on the bill include Nekromantix, Lee Rocker of Stray Cats (with former GuitarWorld.com columnist Buzz Campbell on guitar), Three Bad Jacks, Psycho Devilles and The Smites (Tribute to The Smiths), plus Rosie Flores, Holy Moly!, Johnny Hootrock and Hot Rod Hillbillies. “When I first had the idea for the festival in 2007, the first band I thought of was Reverend Horton Heat,” says Orlando Rios, the event’s executive producer and founder. “They were the first band I ever saw live and they changed my life for the better. Fans always request them and we are always glad to have them.

Legendary guitarist Leslie West will perform for three nights — June 11, 12 and 13 — at New York City’s Iridium Jazz Club at 1650 Broadway. These will be isolated dates with West headlining and performing 75-minute sets starting at 8 p.m. West will be joined by Bobby Rondinelli on drums and Rev Jones on bass.
