How We Used Sass to Build 17 Websites in Five Days

On Wednesday, April 4 we launched 17 websites all at once. They were our 17 Served sites, which included 12 previously existing ones and 5 brand new ones, all with a fresh new makeover. Development was completed two days prior to launch, and started five days prior to that, with a team of only three front-end developers.

Five days to build 17 websites?! You heard right! With heavy utilization of some advanced Sass’ techniques, we built 17 websites in 5 days, a feat we almost definitely could not have accomplished without the power of Sass variables, partials, logic and imports.

Paul Henderson: Finding Clients and Community

We always love hearing about what our talented creative community is up to.  Occasionally we’re lucky enough to have a member write to us about how Behance has helped their creative career. Want to share your own Behance story? Let us know in the comments and we’d love to include it in our Success Stories series.

My name is Paul Henderson, founder of RISE Design Studio, and I joined the Behance community a little less than 2 years ago. Before Behance, I had a been working as a freelance graphic designer in Southern California for roughly 4 years.  I had a decent portfolio, a nice set of local clients, and I enjoyed moderate success working on projects I liked but didn’t necessarily love.

I initially joined Behance and several other online creative communities to get my work out there and attract new clients, but it took me a little bit of time to understand the true value of a top notch creative network versus just a nice portfolio site.

What it didn’t take me long to recognize was the level of work on Behance.  There are a ton of great sites out there with a lot of high level work, but Behance sets itself apart as THE place for the world’s leading creative professionals.

Once I learned that this was a place where the world’s best really galvanized, I decided to stop wasting my time with so many different design outlets and just focus on the RIGHT one.  I started digging into Behance a lot more, getting the know the nuts and bolts of it, building relationships with other designers, and to this day I am extremely happy I did.

Behind the Project: Impossibly Intricate Paper-Craft

In this series, we’ll look deeper into some of the projects on Behance.net that were especially admired in our community. This time, we spoke to Zim and Zou , (a French design studio formed by Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann) – whose paper-craft installations are constantly found in the “most appreciated” list. We spoke with them about these intricate sculptures on display in their latest, Cabinet de Curiosites.

What was your inspiration for this project?
We were inspired by the Cabinets of Curiosities of the 16th and 17th centuries, which were collections shown to the public full of all sorts of interesting things, mainly animals from around the world, strange artifacts, gems, skulls, and other crazy things. These “Cabinets of Curiosities” were the ancestors of Museums.

Can you describe your process in creating this project?
We looked a lot of engravings of the Cabinets before starting the project. Then, we chose to focus mainly on animals, so we studied shapes of birds, crustaceans, and insects. After doing rough drafts of the creatures, we started to work on the internal structures. It was pretty challenging because of the rounded shapes. As we are more used to working on geometric objects, dealing with “organic” elements was pretty difficult. The best solution that we found was to create the structure with rings of papers (to act as a skeleton), stuck together and covered with scotch and tissue paper to give it a smoother form. Then, we had to think about color harmonies, frames, and special cuts. Finally we installed the elements together on mid-tone colored backgrounds to shoot the pictures.

Did you expect it to be as popular as it’s been on The Behance Network?
Honestly, it’s always very difficult to know if a project will be appreciated or not! Especially for this project, because we used mid-tone papers, shining gold paper, glitter papers, framed papers – these colors are very different from the flashy colors we’re used to working with. We wanted to try something new for us and we’re very pleased that people like it!

Did you go through many versions and iterations before coming up with these final pieces?
Yes, we often go through many versions for the same work. I think that’s part of the reflexion process. We need to try a lot of compositions before selecting the best one.

Weighing Your Options: Designer Portfolio Sites

Designer Ben Whitesell researched and evaluated the best online portfolio tools for creatives in a recent blog post, and we’re thrilled that ProSite came out on top. ProSite is Behance’s completely customizable personal portfolio builder. Here’s some of what Ben had to say:

“I have had a great experience dealing with [Behance] through my free profile and did quite a bit of research into other hosted portfolio sites like Cargo Collective and the like. But, because the people behind Behance have been readily accessible via twitter, their blog, and forums, I felt comfortable going with them. The big selling point being how easy it was to set up a site, attach my own personal domain, and even drop in Google Analytics for tracking.

[...]

I really like the level of customization that Prosite offers for webpages. Everything is easy adjusted from an administration panel and you can upload custom images for your header or for the gallery buttons. Columns for page layout can be adjusted to your preference and if you get a little creative then you can also get pretty custom with the sites navigation. Behance also regularly provides updates like adding the ability to add social media links, a custom favicon, custom type integration, and expandable images.”
