I may not even know what Gasparilla is if I hadn’t attended University of Tampa and lived in the city long enough to cement the late February Pirate Festival permanently into my brain.

My friends and family from the north who have heard me squeal with excitement about this event for years have most likely learned to equate it as “some southern pirate thing.”

Or perhaps they may even think of it as a Mardi Gras-type event where people are only out to score tons of beads.

Especially from floats of brightly dressed local celebrities and make-believe characters who drift by playing load music and tossing a variety of items into the crowd.

I guess they may think there were some… drinking games involved… maybe.

Or that you see odd people around just about every packed corner.

It may even be thought to be the type of event where people wear questionable undergarments in place of regular clothes in public.

Yes, after hearing about my random comments about this <del>somewhat made-up</del> historical local celebration, they may think any or all of the above.

And they would be right.

Here’s to another great Gasparilla!
