Lights of the Ozarks 2010

2010-11-21T12:10:00.000-08:00

Last night Diane and I went up to the square to photograph the Christmas Lights on the square. I shot all these handheld except the first one that I used a garbage can for support. All were shot with the K 7 and all but two were with the Pentax DA 21mm Limited. I thought I would go back again sometime with my tripod, but I am pretty happy with these. The first shot is at 560 iso and the second is at 2200 iso. All the rest are at 800 iso. I am glad it wasn't verry cold last night, some years, I have endured 20 degree temps to shoot the lights. The only problem was a wind gusting to 20 mph last night.

Boxley Valley and Steel Creek Campground on the Buffalo River

2010-10-06T18:01:00.000-07:00

Bikes, Blues, and BBQ was last week and I shot almost 800 shots from Wednesday thru Sunday. So what did I do Monday? I got up before dawn and drove out into the woods to photograph the Elk in Boxley Valley. One thing I discovered, the F 100 - 300 is not a good wildlife lens. Oh well, use what you have. After shooting the elk for a while, I drove to Steel Creek Campground hoping to catch some elk there. I saw some deer but they vanished as soon as I got out the tripod. The bluffs and river didn't move so I got them.

Arkansas Air Museum at Drake Field, Fayetteville, Arkansas

2010-09-29T08:37:00.000-07:00

The Photographic Society of NorthWest Arkansas paid a visit to the Arkansas Air Museum Sunday morning. We were able to get into the museum a couple of hours before it was actually open so we only had to cope with eachother getting in our shots. The weather was dark outside so it was a good test of the K 7's ability to deal with mixed lighting. I decided to experiment with the HDR function so these shots are a mix of some straight and some HDR's.

Sam Walton's Ercoupe Model 415-C. This two-seater aircraft was the first one that Sam Walton bought. He bought it in April, 1954 and kept it until September, 1956 and travelled over a three-state area. He found out it was easier to visit locations, such as prospective store sites, when he could do it in a straight line at 100 miles per hour, instead of driving through the Ozarks at 50-60 miles per hour. He eventually sold this one and continued to upgrade through the years. (text from Arkansas Air Museum.)

This trip was to try out my Pentax K7. Most shots were done with the HDR function enabled because of the contrasty light. I was very pleased with the results.

PSNWA Photoshoot at Boxley Valley and Lost Valley Hike

2009-10-26T07:06:00.000-07:00

Saturday, the PSNWA sponsered a photo trip to Boxley Valley and Lost Valley on the Buffalo River to shoot Elk. The Elk were there but disappeared as the sun came up and the fog burned off. It turned out to be a beautiful day and did finally warmed up some. Some people got tired of waiting for the light but it was well worth waiting for. The fall colors were spectacular. We met at the Ponca Elk Center for a tour and lunch, then went to Lost Valley State Park for a hike up the trail. Long day but great for shooting.

This guy was determined to get his shot at Eden Falls. I thought for sure he was going to fall in. He was one of hundreds of people that we encountered that were enjoying the weather and colors.

Kindlin Spirits at the Greek Theater, University of Arkansas 2009

2009-10-20T07:13:00.000-07:00

Friday, my daughter's fire spinning troop gave a performance at the Greek Theater, University of Arkansas, for the Omni Center for Peace. She started this troop a couple of years ago and they just keep getting larger and better. They call themselves "Kindlin Spirits". A search on Utube will pull up some video of some of their performances.

Trip to the Oklahoma Aquarium

2009-08-16T10:33:00.000-07:00

Yesterday, I went to the Oklahoma Aquarium in Tulsa with the Photographic Society of Northwest Arkansas. We spent about three hours wandering in the facility. No special privileges, just free to interact with the other patrons, exhibits, and shoot whatever we wanted. I have picked a few of the ones that grabbed me so far.

It had to be the most popular location with the crowd.

Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photo Walk

2009-07-22T10:56:00.000-07:00

Diane and I participated in the photo walk this weekend. We did Eureka Springs, AR, in the morning and Fort Smith, AR, in the late afternoon and sunset. The Eureka Springs walk had at least 30 participants and the Fort Smith walk had about 20. Was a great way to meet fellow photographers and share the enjoyment of shooting.
