At first glance, It seems simple enough

The customer said “ I’ve got this idea that I'd like to show some improvements to Taxi's is specifically disabled taxi’s". I want to show it at the Taxi Council conference in a few weeks. And over the next few days some random notes, bullet points and very rough pencil sketches turned up via email. The curious little rabbit inside me couldn't let it go, I begin to research new taxi concepts and after spending days more time than I should have we came up with this.

So, What did you think?

Considering how little money that was in the job for what is entailed, I'm pleased with the basic outcome would have liked to have been able to spend a little bit more time and get more van renders. My thanks to Chad Travis the 3D Artist that gave vision to this project and my mechanical consultant Ben koika and Håkan Eriksson for the wonderful music.

Sometimes it's worth doing a job with not enough budget to try something new with out the responsibilities of meeting your client expectations I look forward to trying something new again.

There are some important new and major changes happening to the Google search code that will affect how your will be found. As you have seen for yourself, surfing the web on mobile devices is no longer a growing trend – it's daily business reality. Google recently announced that starting April 21, there will be changes rolling out to their SEO ranking algorithm.

The changes to the site ranking algorithm are;

Smartphone-friendly; With more than 40% of web sites visits done on smartphones, it is now critical have a smartphone-friendly version of your website, this is done by having a 2nd version of your site, that’s redesigned for mobile, hidden behind the normal desktop site that phones are redirected to and since it’s a separate set of pages, the options are unlimited, less text, no flash, smaller videos or even a completely different site structure.
Client area / Localisation; This update goes hand in hand with the first, it aims to provide users entering localised search terms (such as ‘pubs in southport’ or ‘Beenleigh butchers’) with more accurate and useful results.
Social Media, Blogs & Videos; Over the next 3-4 months social media will become even more of a ranking factor for Google, as it uses social media to work out what site are cool/important to real people. Combined with the opportunity to reach out and connect with your audience and increase your company visibility the need to be active on Social Media has grown immensely. & (2) (backlinks) ie: Links to your site from other sites, show that you have build relationships with your clients. Theses links/post/videos etc are counted if they are from from relevant (to your business) and quality sites Google.

As you can see the first two of these changes ties directly into making the web more mobile/smartphone friendly, So summing up it's important to have:

* A mobile friendly upgrade to your site, (Mobile friendly menus, larger text etc)
* Clear Localisation, (where you are and operate)
* Quality social media posts creating backlinks from other sites

As mobile traffic continues to skyrocket, and attracting new clients becomes more important it’s critical to get on the right side of Google’s mobile SEO ranking algorithm. Google will start to penalize sites that make mobile browsing difficult and this change will have a significant impact in your sites search results VERY SOON.

Have you given your customers anything for free lately?

I know that doesn't sound logical, you're in business to make money right. But when you look at it from the other side of the table, the main reason you or anyone else browses the internet, calls or walks into a store is to find information. And finding the right information and getting something for free will in most cases will give potential customers a better opinion of your business and your website. Do it often enough and people will start to think of you as a friend!

That's right I said friend when you're on Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest or using Twitter - it's called social media for a reason, people (your customers) want to feel useful and involved. By shareing something thats interesting, new or poorly understood on social media (your information), your customers can share with their friends and the rest of the world. WHY? It makes them (your customers) look good and feel involved, Best of all they know which of their friends are interested in your service business or product. How good is it when your customers are selling your product or service for you, for free, on their own time, now you are correctly using social media.

It's important to understand that, Just pushing an typical advertising on social media is like somebody showing up at the door, trying to get you to change power suppliers at 6:30 on Tuesday evening, NOT GOOD ~ You where thinking along the lines of "Go away" but it probably took a bit longer to say.

Take the time, do it right and your customers will be selling your product or service for you, for free, on their own time.

It doesn't matter what business you're in, there is always something that customers want to know, how does it work, how can I make it better, is there a cheaper/faster way to do it, there's dozens of questions that people want to know about your product, business, or your industry and guess who knows the answer; You Do! So why not tell them?

Take the time to make a fact sheet of those standard questions that you get asked all of the time ad some illustrations or photos whatever is needed, it dosen't have to be a work of art, because customers really want to know.

Once you've got it completed, pass it to your friendly local graphic artist for a touch of polish, then you can place your new article or flyer on your website, use it on your on your social media pages (Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook) or make it part of your monthly mail out. Your customers will Love it and in our lot of cases share it with friends because they really want to know what you know

What have you done with your web site lately?

If you're like almost every other small business owner, You've got a website and that's great, I'm happy for you. But when was the last time you updated it? Added a new item content, and then linked that content it to your social media?

Typically most small business websites are only updated sporadically and social media posts may happen a couple of times a year if you're lucky. I'm not just suggesting that you do this because it makes you look good,

Search engines (or at least the 80% that's Google) has changed how your website rankings are calculated, and that's important. As of the last few updates, Google pays very little attention to the traditional things that it use to like "Meta tags" and "keywords" - the thing that count the most at the moment is real content - real stories - real pictures, REAL things that real people want to know and share.

Sadly going from scratching your head and changing a few keywords to actually writing an interesting story of 300 to 500 words requires a little more discipline. For most people remembering to stop day to day work, to try and come up with a different artical idea every month or even every week is really time consuming and quite taxing. Add in that real world time pressures of business, bookwork, partners and children an it seems like all your time is gone, but that fact is like any other form of housekeeping this is something you must do.

One of the techniques that I use is to create a calendar and sit down quietly by myself and come up with half a 10-15 ideas and then ad in the different holiday or events Christmas Easter et cetera and then start putting marks on the calendar wher each headline would work best, Now look at what gaps are left. When you approach it this way it's not as hard as it first seemsto come up with a post a month or even to

OK you've actually planned your headlines, try adding a few subheadings, or even an outline, it's much easier to finish, you might even be able to sub it out to somebody like me (BlueCrystal Creative, yep that's our plug)

If you can manage to at least build your frame work of headings, subheadings and news story ideas, then the next time you have a quiet day year right guess what you could do that if it was a quiet day you could probably knock over two or three of them and set them up automatically. If you're using a Blog, WordPress or CMS that allows you to set go live dates, that publish automatically you can even get that post to feed Facebook and Twitter. So get your web updates plan worked ona start writing.

Since 2001 all businesses come under the Criminal Code and compliance with requirements of various government departments is mandatory. Even more daunting is the fact that you are now obliged to know all the rules or be criminally liable if an accident happens as there is a presumption of guilt if companies cannot demonstrate ‘a culture of compliance’. Here are some examples.

You are obliged to provide staff, customers and visitors with a safe environment.
It is a criminal act to behave in way a court might decide is ‘misleading and deceptive’.
You can be held responsible for the performance of the products you have sold or work you’ve done. Worse you can be sued (or even jailed) if someone using your product is injured or killed even though you know the product is perfectly safe when properly operated.

When getting new signage, do you consider the whole building and its environment?

How often when renewing or getting new signage for your business do you consider the whole building and its environment? At BlueCrystal Creative we often have people coming to us, seeking new or upgraded signage for their business without even considering the building or street it's going to be seen in!

Before you start your signage review, take a photo of the outside of your building, stand and truly look what the oncoming traffic can really see. Do plants, or other signs predominantly fill the environment, can you make out the shape of the building from the street? Take a moment to try and view the building actually as a first time client does, OK now consider what colours in your logo pallet could be used to contrast you business against the background, in some cases by choosing one of your logo's stronger colours and repainting the entire building in just that colour, a much smaller sign can be used to even greater effect, because the whole building now acts as a logo. You often see this used to great effect by major chain operations, you can drive along a busy street and see the whole building painted in their corporate colour and recognise it instantly

A second advantage of using the corporate colour, is that it's the equivalent of adding white space around the logo which in a visually confusing street can add a great deal of clarity

guess the cost of 30sec Super Bowl time.

QUICK STATS Fords Explorer facebook page got 232,556 likes & 2,786 on share's (people talking about it) In plain english that means is nearly a quarter of a million people acknowledged liking the product
shared with there friends and 2,786 went even further by activity promoting the product.

Over the years I've worked in or on almost every form of advertising TV, newspapers, want-a-be agency's, signs, corporate multi-nationals, recording studios, publishing, flags & banners - and only thing I can tell you as an absolute certainty is. . .

Just think how much the world has changed in the last five years, the exponential growth of the Internet, social networks, YouTube. The explosion of tablet's, smart phone's and web enabled to televisions in to the home, honestly when was the last time you bought a newspaper, It's all iPads and smart phone's now.

And it's only likely to get worse remember the family sitting around the TV as little as five years ago today most likely everyone in your house is watching a different show/video/game some of then not even available in Australia as a matter of fact YouTube itself estimates that 90% of all web traffic will be VIDEO by 2014

So let's stop and look at what your options are today if you spent $2000 on advertising On TV even with out production costs it's gone in 30 to 60 seconds and that's a non-prime on time slot

On radio depending on market and station it's gone in anywhere from a day to week-and-a-half

Bet you cash on a newspaper it's gone in a week or maybe just a one day on a weekend

In Yellow Pages it's gone in year and that's not a big add

Now where starting to get some return for our outlay, build a cheep website and maybe that will be good for 3 to 6 years, as long as your writing a little new content now and then.

Signs give a good return and have a life of perhaps five to 7 years, signs work well for business who's customers are in the local area.

But if you have the right type of video content online it can still be working for you 10 years or maybe 20 years later, for example if you sell playgrounds a video on how to choose, site, build & maintain you playground will be relevant for years, if you sell wholesale food stuffs recipes and storage tips will be usable for years. For me the part about song writing that I found most unsettling in the beginning was the exposure. If nothing else song writing can leave you totaly naked, revealing your heart, soul, emotions, showing your innermost thoughts to the world, it can the most difficult for you and often upset any other people involved.

For me one of major issues was, as I was just another speck of dust in the cosmos what right did I have to expose to the world or so much of the private life of my partner, family & friends anyone and everyone I've ever included in a song and even worse It's only FROM MY POINT OF VIEW, normally with no right of reply.

The writer Thoreau once said that every writer's duty was to give "first and last, a simple and sincere account of their own life."

Taking that thought further, I would think that it is imposable to write sincerely from any other perspective than your own, even if you are putting yourself in to someone else's shoes, you would still see things from your perspective

I am really getting tired of The Australian's daily NBN bashing, never in recent reading have I found anything remotely positive about the outcome/s for Australia or about building a better future, Australia is undeniably in need of a new and more internationally competitive operational model or indeed any better plan, manufacturing is all but dead, the industries for the future (it seems) are mining, tourism and a range of things that are almost entirely produced between our ears.

The NBN or something similar will be the railways of the next generation and it should not be left to any commercial organisation that will inevitably say that’s it only worth cabling within 15k’s of major CBD’s and he rest of you can get stuffed.

(To me) The Australian's just sounds like Pauline Hanson, the occasional relevant point obscured by the babbling of someone that is not capable of putting together a better argument, If I didn’t know better one could easily assume that (a) Everyone at the Australian is over 60, and deeply regrets the loss of carrier pigeon, (b) Good news might be true but doesn't sell newspapers or (c) Rupert has a network of his own down the pipeline.

I would like you to be “The Australian” I remember, not the un-Australian you’ve become.

Finding your Head Space Shift

I sit at my computer to start work and dive right in, large complex jobs requiring complete concentration for hours on end, I've mentioned before "head space shift" (my term) that when moving from Left-Right brain (creative to analytical) or vice versa that you experience a confusion or disorientation and it often takes a moment to compose myself. For me this all so happens on the larger scale, a day or days spent in the wrong side of my head (business/numbers) can make the music hard to find.

After a big day I was finding it difficult to find the music in me, not just to hear the notes or the correct pitch, but also to find the inner musical connection, to close my eyes and feel it, something that is not normally a problem for me.

I think that most people have a problem balancing the different areas of there lives, I wonder if guidance councilors and employment profilers and other people that work out whether your suited for a peculiar type of job, have ever stopped and looked at whether that job is good for as a "whole of life" thing you example; If you are a cut and dry high pressure lawyer where everything is about seeking the best advantage, would that make a personal relationship harder, would you bring these skills into your relationship with your partner or If you were in a structured and attention to detail occupation would that make the randomness of small kids harder to deal with.

What bigger price do we pay for our pay for our occupation, finding your head space shift.
