BURNING

The arms of the trees open wide
We are here for such a short time
Do not imagine this dream is yours

LOTUS

a lotus grows in my throat
it is blue
i feel it blossom as
an old woman feeds me
sugar cookies
they are poison she says
her hands are etched
with cuts and scabs
her eyes are powder blue
they look through me like a lens
there is no such thing as a friend
in this world she says
people just appear
i see i am
alone
people are just mirrors she says
the lotus in my throat
grows towards my forehead

JANUARY SALES

It's the January sales
and I'm buying.

Trapped in the endless, airless halls,
nullified through the phosphorescent fluorescence

and the lonely beating of my thoughts,
walking behind all the girlfriends,

as I lug my bags, sorry already
for the weight of fashion.

And when I get home
I see other clothes hanging

hanging in my closet...
new, unused, reflecting all the places

I did not go,
the ways I was not seen.

And not until I lay naked in my bed
can I feel

the white longing in my bones
which can not be dressed.

VARIATIONS ON THE THEME OF LONELINESS

He stares into the page, writes his name in red
letters, wipes his nose on the sleeve of his shirt, hopes
no one is looking. But the teacher looks up at him
then down, writes something quickly in her book. The boy
stares out the window, sees crows
standing on the lawn in a row.

Outside children ask:
Will you be my friend? Will you promise not to
talk behind my back?
He does not understand.

He sees them huddled in groups, knows how it is to walk
outside them, how they talk in whispers,
twitter when he passes.
                         And that moment of relief
when they sometimes let him stand
                        in their midst. What they say
bores him. He can’t wait to leave, walk
into the open field,
                        the kindness of horizon,
the clarity of trees.

Wide open door into the closed room.
The way the child sits, the way
he moves his hands, the way he holds his pen,
she records this in her book.

Trampled grass sprang back when he walked
through the field to see her. But the boy can not
spring back
as she takes notes on each of his gestures,
as she consults her charts,
writes her report.

The room closes more.
She notes startle reflex in her book, writes
he is too quiet, unable to answer with eye
contact, does not answer my abstract
questions, is not animated like the others.
                        She sees a drowned face,
eyes staring forward from the bottom of a well, tells
his mother, call any time,
                        though it’s taken the mother months to see her.
There are support groups you can join, she says, as she jots
Autistic on the cover of his file,
            places it on her shelf, crammed with books,
looks away, checks her watch.

The boy walks alone through the field of children
and trees and basketball courts and balls and
screaming and jump ropes.
The air turns quiet as he leans
against the chain link fence, presses his body
against it as he watches cars pass,
telling stories to the tree,
laughing at the tree’s response.

KABUL

This afternoon I went to the jar, sank my finger in the honey.
No one saw me so I let the sweetness linger on my tongue.
At night I paint black around my eyes.
I wash it off at morning.
When everyone’s asleep, I draw on scraps of paper
I’ve collected, the backs of labels, edges torn from newspapers.
This is my secret.

Coming back from the highway with my brothers,
I dropped my spade, went to lean against the shed,
Heard Father’s voice coming from within.
He was laughing with Abdullah who says he’ll buy me
For three bags of wheat
When Father’s done with me.
When he does I’ll slash my body with petrol,
Strike the match like Laida did.
I watched those two fools empty a giant vat of honey
Into another vat, saw them pull out long tubes
They scraped with their hands, licked with their tongues.
Beneath the amber honey, I saw guns.
Father caught me looking, jumped off his chair,
His hands were claws dripping towards me,
Shoving me hard against the wall, grabbing me there.
Whore!! he screamed then spit on me.
I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak.
I covered my face.
Back in the tent
Mother was making lentils,
Hunched over the fire.
I pulled the spoon from her hand, stirred the pot
As if I were her daughter.

Today, walking with my brothers, I saw Bashir.
He was leaning against a wall, one leg missing.
I knew, still a shock went through me
Seeing the dirty rags tied around his stump, the blood dried,
What looked like pus.
And how he stood as if he had a leg.
Strange how we never speak
But I walk through him with my eyes,
Enter his hidden rooms.
He was speaking with Khangal about the enemy
But his soft eyes were blazing holes in me,
Forcing me to see the sky and trees with deeper color.
Khangal saw me looking, threw his spade hard against my leg,
The pain was so intense. I bled and bled,
Putting pressure on the wound with just my hand,
My burkha drenched in blood,
He pulled me up by my hair.
I burned in the part of me which was not hurt.

Tonight Father had guests. I heard them say
They liked the bread.
I baked it
While Mother took a nap.
She did not say
I baked it. She turned her back to me.

I feel sickness inside me all the time.
I enter the back rooms with my father,
Creep out like a rat trapped in its maze,
Seek escape in the next cage where Mother stands
Brewing the food, keeping us snared in this affliction called life.
And I think of our martyrs dying for freedom.
I would like to die for freedom.
But I am a woman
And I do not believe in the paradise Father speaks about
While he beats me with his stick.

But every day I keep collecting my scraps of paper.
And when everyone’s asleep,
I draw Bashir, his stump, my father with his guns,
My mother hunched over the fire, stirring lentils.
I draw them all out of me.
I open myself to the darkness.
I wait for night to speak.

छोटा बाबू : एक कहानी

दोस्तों आज "छोटा बाबू" पढ़िए। यह कहानी मैंने 2010 में लिखी थी। दैनिक अख़बार नेशनल दुनिया में 4 अगस्त 2013 को प्रकाशित हो चुकी है।

एक ठहरी हुई-सी नदी है। पानी अपनी रफ़्तार से बह रहा है। एक छोटी-सी मछली पानी की सतह पर कभी डूबती है, कभी उभरती है। अचानक एक चिड़िया आती है और मछली को अपनी चोंच में दबा कर उड़ जाती है। वह चुपचाप इस दृश्य को देख रहा है। एक आँख समझती है कि चिड़िया ने नदी के माथे को चूमा है। दूसरी आँख कहती है कि नदी अपनी अंगुलियों से चिड़िया को छूते-छूते रह गई। जैसे हाथ से तितली फिसल जाती है। मगर उसका स्पर्श हथेलियों में साँस लेता है। परों का रंग अंगुलियों से सारे बदन में उतर कर लहू के साथ-साथ बहने लगता है। मगर हाथ में तितली नहीं होती है। कुछ इसी तरह से उसके बाबूजी उसकी ज़िंदगी से चले गए और वह अपने लहू में उन्हें महसूस करता रहा। उसका नाम छोटा बाबू नहीं है, पर बाबूजी उसे इसी नाम से बुलाया करते थे। बाबूजी के बाद घरवाले भी कभी-कभार इसी नाम से पुकार लेते हैं। ...प्यार से...तल्ख़ी से...पता नहीं।

उसे लगा कि वह जो कुछ भी कर रहा है, ठीक है। बारह-तेरह साल की उम्र बहुत नाज़ुक होती है। उसके दोस्त ने सिगरेट सुलगाई और वह पीने लगा। उसने पहली बार सिगरेट चखी। एक छोटा-सा कमरा है, जिसे कमरा कहना लाजिमी नहीं होगा। मकान अंडर कन्सट्रक्शन है। एक आवाज़ का टुकड़ा कान पर आ कर गिरता है –

“डीएम आ रहा है।”
“किधर से?”
“पीछे की सीढ़ियों से।”
“भागो...।”

सभी स्टूडेंट्स अपने-अपने बिस्तर पर लेटे हुए हैं। किसी की पलकें आधी खुली हुई हैं। किसी के हाथों में उलटी किताब। कोई कुछ खोज रहा है। कोई कुछ भी नहीं। दरवाज़ा खुलता है। डीएम कमरे में दाखिल होते हैं। सभी को देख कर खुश होते हैं। पर गुस्सा अंदर से है। एक बिस्तर है, जो अब भी ख़ाली है। आँख उसी ख़ाली बिस्तर की तरफ मुड़ती है। आँखों की लाली बातों में उतर आती है।

“ये कहाँ गया?”

“सभी अपने-अपने काम में मसरूफ़ हैं।”

“मैने पूछा ये कहाँ गया?”
“आचार्य जी हम यहाँ हैं, बाथरूम गए थे, पेट में दर्द हो रहा है।”
“दवा क्यों नहीं ली?”
“अभी-अभी तो पता चला है।”
“मेरे साथ आओ, दवा देता हूँ।”
“जी।”

डीएम के मुड़ते ही वह अपने दोस्तों की तरफ देख, मुस्कुरा कर आँख मारता है। दोनों के जाते ही सभी आपस में बात करने लग जाते हैं। ये डीएम बहुत ख़तरनाक है। हमें तो मस्ती भी नहीं करने देता।

“डीएम मतलब?” – एक ने पूछा।
“अरे दिनेश महतो।”
“हॉस्टल इंचार्ज़?”
“और कौन तेरा बाप?”
“साले, तेरी तो...।”

...दवा लेकर वह सीधे बाथरूम जाता है। जहाँ सिगरेट का अधजला टुकड़ा इंतज़ार कर रहा है। उसे बाथरूम जाने की लत लग गई है। जब-तब वह बाथरूम जाने लगा है। क्योंकि यही एक महफ़ूज़ जगह है, जहाँ वह आराम से सिगरेट पी सकता है। हॉस्टल में सिगरेट पीने की इज़ाजत नहीं है। इसीलिए यह नेक काम बाथरूम में सालों तक किया जाता रहा। इस दौरान उसने कई प्रयोग भी किए। मसलन एक बार में दो-चार या आठ सिगरेट पीना। आँखों से धुआं निकालना। नाक से सिगरेट पीना। कई बार वह कामयाब भी हुआ। नाकामी भी हाथ लगी। इस आदत ने उसे अपना ग़ुलाम बना लिया था। पता नहीं वह क्यों पीता था?

यह उसका पाँचवां पैग था। सिगरेट अब अकेली नहीं रही। शराब के साथ अपना दुख बाँटा करती है। दुनिया के रंजो-ग़म से तकलीफ जब भी परेशान हो जाती है, तो वह उसकी पनाह में आती है। ख़ुदा जाने यहाँ आकर उसे क्या मिलता है? चंद क़रार के कतरे। या कुछ बासी लम्हे, जिसे देखना, छूना, सहलाना उसे अच्छा लगता है। इस वक़्त वह जहाँ पर है। सर के उपर एक सफ़ेद छत है। जो बार-बार उसे अपनी तरफ खींच रही है। न चाहते हुए भी वह छत की तरफ देखता है। कितनी ख़ूबसूरत है। छत से टंगा पंखा घूमता ही जा रहा है। वह सोचने लगता है। जब पंखा बंद होता है, तो उसके तीन डायने होते हैं। चलते वक़्त क्यों नहीं दिखाई पड़ते? पंखे की वजह से सिगरेट जल्दी ख़त्म हो जाती है। वह उठता है और पंखे का स्वीच ऑफ कर देता है।

उसने दूसरी सिगरेट जलाई। गिलास में थोड़ी-सी और शराब डाली। वह कुछ अजीब-सा महसूस कर रहा है। कुर्सी की गोद से उठ कर वह बिस्तर की बाहों में लेट जाता है। सामने कई ट्रॉफियाँ चमक रही हैं। एक-एक कर के सभी ट्रॉफियों को देखने लगता है। हिंदू कॉलेज, खालसा कॉलेज, ज़ाकिर हुसैन कॉलेज, भीम राव अम्बेदकर कॉलेज, लेडी श्रीराम कॉलेज, जीसस एण्ड मेरी कॉलेज, माता सुंदरी कॉलेज...। धीरे-धीरे पूरी दिल्ली यूनिवर्सिटी कमरे में ज़िंदा हो उठती है। यह सबसे बड़ी वाली ट्रॉफी, जिस प्रतियोगिता में उसे फर्स्ट प्राइज़ के रूप में मिली है, कितने विद्यार्थियों ने भाग लिया था उस में? सौ से भी ज़्यादा रहे होंगे। अलग-अलग कॉलेजों के ही नहीं, अलग-अलग यूनिवर्सिटियों के भी। अलग-अलग भाषाओं की कविताएं। धीरे धीरे कई चेहरे उभरने लगते हैं। ये धुंधला-सा चेहरा किसका है?

“मैं निशा हूँ।”
“फ़लक कहते हैं मुझे।”
“अंदाज़ अच्छा है।”

“शुक्रिया।”
“आपकी कविताओं में बहुत आकर्षण है।”
“पता नहीं।”
“...मगर एक उदासी भी है।”
“...”

क्या उसे उदासी की वजह वाकई नहीं पता है? यही सोचते हुए उसने जवाब तलाशती आँखों को अलविदा कहा। फिर दूसरी तरफ मुड़ गया। कुछ दूर चलने पर बेचैनी उसके कदमों से लिपट गई। उसने चाहा कि वह लौट आए और बताए कि उदासी की वजह क्या है? फ़लक की सोच के साँचे में किस रंग की मिट्टी प्रतिमा बनने को तैयार है? एक सफ़ेद-ओ-स्याह पल उसकी पलकों को छू कर ज़मीन पर गिर जाता है।

“बेटा, तुम मुझसे दूर जा रहे हो। तुम्हारे बग़ैर मैं कैसे रह पाऊंगी?” – माँ ने कहा।
फ़लक ने सिर्फ़ इतना कहा – “कहो तो पढ़ना छोड़ दूँ।”

माँ की आँखों में एक सफ़ेद लकीर-सी खिंच गई। वह रोना तो बहुत चाहती थी, मगर आँसू की बूँदों को पलकों के भीतर पुतलियों में बंद कर दिया। बातचीत का लहज़ा उसकी समझ के बाहर था। देखते-देखते उसका बेटा उसकी नज़रों से ओझल हो गया। वह चाह कर भी रोक न सकी। शायद वह रोकना ही नहीं चाहती थी। क्योंकि न रोकने में ही उसके बेटे के सुनहरे भविष्य की भलाई शामिल थी।

छोटी-सी उम्र को सिर्फ़ दस तक की गिनती आती है। फ़लक पढ़ने के लिए घर से दूर जा रहा है। स्कूटर की पिछली सीट पर बैठे-बैठे वह दोनों तरफ देख रहा है। कभी खुश हो कर मुस्कुरा देता, तो कभी चुप रह कर ही हवाओं की सलामी स्वीकार कर लेता। उसे किसी चीज़ की फ़िक्र नहीं है। वह जानता है कि इस वक़्त स्कूटर ड्राइव कर रहे उसके बाबूजी उसकी ज़िंदगी के रहनुमा हैं। जब रहनुमा साथ हो, तो फ़िक्र क्या करना?

उसके बाबूजी उसकी ज़िंदगी में बहुत अहम हैं। माँ, उससे जितनी मुहब्बत करती है। उससे कहीं ज़्यादा प्यार वह अपने बाबूजी से करता है। बाबूजी के प्रति जो समर्पण है, लगाव है, झुकाव है, आकर्षण है, किसी और के लिए नहीं हो सकता। होना भी नहीं चाहिए। क्योंकि इसी सबकुछ की झलक बाबूजी के मन में अपने लिए देख पाता है, जो शायद उसे माँ के लिए भी नहीं दिखाई देती। माँ को इस बात की तक़लीफ़ भी है, मगर यह सच है। कभी-कभी व्यक्ति किसी की चाहत में इतना डूब जाता है कि किसी के होने और न होने के बीच का बारीक फ़र्क भी ख़त्म हो जाता है। ऐसे लोगों को ही दीवाना कहा जाता है। अपनी हद के उस पार जा कर प्यार करते हैं। सच! वह अपने बाबूजी का दीवाना है। हर काम की श्शुरुआत उनका नाम लेकर। हर साँस की आहट, जैसे उनको आवाज़ दे रही हो। हर धड़कन, जैसे उनका सज़दा कर रही हो। आँखों में उनके सिवा कोई और नहीं। क्या इसे पागलपन नहीं कहा जाएगा? इस बात की परवाह उसे कभी नहीं रही। शायद पागल ही है। बाबूजी तो अब रहे नहीं, मगर उनके होने का भ्रम पाले बैठा है। कोई कुछ भी कहे। वह मानता है कि उसके बाबूजी आज भी उससे रू-ब-रू होते हैं।

एक दफ़ा कुछ ऐसा हुआ। सुबह की अलसाई आँखें सूरज की दस्तक को सहला रही थी। अचानक रोने की रोशनी सारे घर में फैल गई। सारा घर महकने लगा। घर के सारे लोग एक जगह एकत्रित हो गए। देखा कि फ़लक अपने बिस्तर पर लेटा-लेटा रो रहा है। तकिए का कुछ हिस्सा भीग गया है। सबने उसे जगाया और आँसुओं का कारण पूछा। थोड़ी देर बाद जब उसने रोना बंद किया तो कहा- ‘बाबूजी’। और कुछ भी न कह सका। बाबूजी उसके सपने से निकल कर सामने सोफे पर बैठे थे। वह उन्हें देखता रहा। अंदर ही अंदर ख़ुद को भरता रहा। मुस्कुराता रहा। धीरे-धीरे सब लोग वहाँ से चले गए। जैसे चाँद के उपर से सारा स्याह बादल छट गया हो। जैसे चाँद निखर कर और भी चमक उठा हो। वाकई फ़लक पहले से ज़्यादा शांत और लबालब लग रहा था। उसकी आँखों में एक अजीब-सी चमक थी। वही चमक उसकी आँखों में अकसर देखने को मिल जाती है। सपना तो महज एक जरिया है, अपने बाबूजी से मुलाक़ात करने और बातचीत करने का।

छोटा बाबू! अचानक किसी ने आवाज़ दी। उसने देखा, तो आसपास कोई भी न था। कमरा बिल्कुल सूनसान था। उसे किसी जाते हुए कदमों की आहट सुनाई पड़ी। उसने दरवाज़े की तरफ हाथ बढ़ा कर रोकना चाहा। मगर रोक न सका। जैसे उसका किसी चीज़ पर इख़्तियार न रह गया हो। वह बहुत देर तक ख़ामोश, ख़िड़की के बाहर, कहीं ख़लाओं में एकटक देखता रहा। शायद तितली उड़ चुकी थी। सिर्फ़ परों का रंग और लम्स हथेलियों से चिपका रह गया था। शायद चिड़िया मछली को अपनी चोंच में दबा कर जा चुकी थी। नदी में बहते हुए पानी की सतह पर अब भी थोड़ी-सी, न के बराबर हलचल मौजूद थी।

Poets can be somewhat “eccentric.”
They have deep conversations with Animals, clouds, birds and Grecian Urns.
If you date a poet everyone will think you are the jerk they are writing about.
You will be the jerk they are writing about.
Poetry hands are really annoying and they use them all the time.
Poetry hands are extremely contagious and you will use them all the time.
They will name your Cats and Dogs “Angst” and “Ennui” so they can call them yelling, “Angst, Ennui.”
They collect words the way other people collect stamps or coins, especially antediluvian words that have not been in circulation for at least 100 years or more.
They look for chances to insert their new words into conversations. For example “I want to tell her that I love her, but the point is probably moot.”
They think children’s books are sublime.
They refuse to care where the remote is.
All your furniture will be positioned around windows for them to stare out for hours at a time.
Your parents will think they are possessed.
They are possessed.
You will lose all arguments, or feel so guilty you wish you had lost.
They will secretly judge your metaphors.
They carry a notebook everywhere and let everyone see it but you.
They hoard pens and refuse to let you borrow them.
They are obsessed with incredibly depressing films without happy endings.
They stare too hard and don’t blink enough.
They listen to every single kind of music you can imagine, even Brazilian monkey howling listening for universal truth.
They keep conversations going way too long.
You will never know if they agree with you or are just following you down the rabbit hole to see how crazy you are.
They like rabbit holes.
They can’t keep secrets. It will come out thinly veiled and mythologized in their poetry.
It takes a least a week to a year for them to form their opinion about something, and that opinion is subject to change.
They speak in rhyme all the time.
They talk to everyone, which a lot of people find scary, especially at the grocery store.
They don’t understand why if murder is illegal, and rape is illegal, slavery, and genocide are illegal, then why is war legal?
They actually think we need to be protected from Monsanto, instead of protecting Monsanto.
They do not understand why heterosexuals even have the right to tell homosexuals they can or can’t get married.
They don’t understand the global threat of Dandelions and why we must eradicate the threat with toxic chemicals.
They refuse to care what celebrities are fighting on twitter, or at least they pretend not to care what celebrities are fighting on twitter.
They are rebels and purposely wear white shoes after Labor Day.
They think espresso machines and tiny cups are magic.
They look at life as a mystery, but when they look at you like a mystery, it makes you think there is something stuck in you teeth.
They will make you empty out your head and your heart like they are junk drawers and question everything in them.
They cannot live without passion.
There will be drama and excessive rhyming.
They crave plot twists and depraved themes like heroin.
They mine for emotional shrapnel like diamonds.
Their euphemisms will never measure up.
They can only live or visit cities with poetry open mics.
Whatever is wrong, they have a tea for it.
They attempt to interject malapropisms into every conversation.
They have their own antagonist and nemesis.
They use aposiopesis for ….
They sneak dord into conversations in an attempt to make it a real word.
They abuse Asyndetons.
But the most important reason never to date a poet is that poetry is an addiction, and before you know it you will be the “eccentric” poet as well.

कमल जीत चौधरी ऐसे कवि का नाम है, जिन्हें कम शब्दों में बड़ी बात कहना बखूबी आता है। प्रेम को उपलब्ध होने के लिए ‘असामान्य होना’ पहली शर्त मानने वाले कवि कमल जीत जब आदमी की ओर आँख उठाते हैं, तो उन्हें इस समय आदमी एक पोस्टकार्ड की तरह दिखाई देता है। जब उनकी सोच कल्पनाओं का क्षितिज बुनती है, तो उस क्षितिज का रंग स्लेटी होना उचित है। यही स्लेटी रंग कवि का अपना रंग है। वो जानते हैं कि एक दिन यह रंग सारे रंगों को अपने में समो लेगा और पूरी पृथ्वी पर फैल जाएगा। उनकी आँख से ओझल हुईं वस्तुएँ अचानक से सफ़ेद पुतली पर आकार लेने लगती हैं, दिल-ओ-दिमाग़ पर पसर जाती हैं। ...शून्य से कविता उतरती रहती है और वो चुपचाप इस क्रिया का साक्षी बनते हैं। तो आईए पढ़ते हैं कमल जीत चौधरी की कविताएँ — त्रिपुरारि कुमार शर्मा

नाव का हम क्या करते

वहां
एक नदी थी
जहां हम खड़े थे
सिद्धस्त
अपनी अपनी कलाओं में-

तुम डूबने से ज्यादा
तैरना जानते थे

निलय उपाध्याय ऐसे रचनाकार हैं, जिनकी आँख का उजाला गाँव में ‘भक्क इजोरिया’ का कारण बनता है और सोच का रेशम शहर को रंगीन बनाता है। वो जब भी शहर या गाँव के बारे में लिखते हैं, दोनों का रंग अलग होता है। वो अपनी कविता-कहानी में दोनों जगहों की समस्या, लोग, हवा, माहौल, दुख, राजनीति, व्यवसाय, मिट्टी, बाज़ार आदि के बारे में चर्चा करते हैं। शहर में बसने के बावजूद उनके भीतर जो एक गाँव अब भी कहीं बसा हुआ है, बार-बार उस गाँव की याद उनके ज़ेहन को ज़ख़्मी कर जाती है। वो शब्दों के मरहम अपनी चोट पर मलते हैं। वो हवाओं पर लिखे हुए आवाज़ों को देखते हैं, पढ़ते हैं। उसे पहचानते हैं। उसे पहनते हैं। उनकी नज़र मुड़ती है, फिसलती है, टूटती है और टूट कर साहित्याकाश पर कुछ निशान छोड़ जाती है। आईए आज हम उन्हीं निशानों को पढ़ने-समझने की कोशिश करते हैं : त्रिपुरारि कुमार शर्मा

A Windmill Makes A Statement

You think I like to stand all day, all night,
all any kind of light, to be subject only
to wind? You are right. If seasons undo
me, you are my season. And you are the light
making off with its reflection as my stainless
steel fins spin.

On lawns, on lawns we stand,
we windmills make a statement. We turn air,
churn air, turning always on waiting for your
season. There is no lover more lover than the air.
You care, you care as you twist my arms
round, till my songs become popsicle

and I wing out radiants of light all across
suburban lawns. You are right, the churning
is for you, for you are right, no one but you
I spin for all night, all day, restless for your

sight to pass across the lawn, tease grasses,
because I so like how you lay above me,
how I hovered beneath you, and we learned
some other way to say: There you are.

You strip the cut, splice it to strips, you mill
the wind, you scissor the air into ecstasy until
all lawns shimmer with your bluest energy.

Oracle

Dead girls don't go the dying route to get known.
You’ll find us anonymous still, splayed in Buicks,
carried swaying like calves, our dead hefts swung
from ankles, wrists, hooked by hands and handed
over to strangers slippery as blackout. Slammed
down, the mud on our dress is black as her dress,
worn out as a throw-rug beneath feet that stomp
out the most intricate weave. It ought not sadden
us, but sober us. Sylvia Plath killed herself. She ate
her sin. Her eye got stuck on a diamond stickpin.
You take Blake over breakfast, only to be bucked
out your skull by a cat-call crossing a parking lot.
Consuming her while reviling her, conditioned to
hate her for her appetite alone: her problem was
she thought too much? Needling an emblem’s ink
onto your wrist, the surest defense a rose to reason
against that bluest vein's insistent wish. Let’s all
us today finger-sweep our cheek-bones with two
blood-marks and ride that terrible train homeward
while looking back at our blackened eyes inside
tiny mirrors fixed inside our plastic compacts. We
could not have known where she began given how
we were, from the start, made to begin where she
ends. In this way, she's no way to make her amends.

Why I Am Afraid of Turning the Page

Spokes, spooks: your tinsel hair weaves the wheel
that streams through my dreams of battle. Another
apocalypse, and your weird blondeness cycling in
and out of the march: down in a bunker, we hunker,
can hear the boots from miles off clop. We tend to
our flowers in the meantime. And in the meantime,
a daughter is born. She begins as a mere inch, lost
in the folds of a sheet; it's horror to lose her before
she's yet born. Night nurses embody the darkness.
Only your brain remains, floating in a jar that sits
in a lab far off, some place away, and terribly far.
Your skull no longer exists, its ash has been lifted
to wind from a mountain's top by brothers, friends.
I am no friend. According to them. Accordion, the
child pulls its witching wind between its opposite
handles: the lungs of the thing grieve, and that is
its noise. She writhes the floor in tantrum. When
you climbed the sides of the house spider-wise to
let yourself in, unlocked the front door, let me in
to climb up into your attic the last time I saw you
that infected cat rubbed its face against my hand.
Wanting to keep it. No, you said. We are friends.
I wear my green jacket with the furred hood. You
pushed me against chain-length. Today is the day
that the planet circles the night we began. A child
is born. Night nurses coagulate her glassed-in crib.
Your organs, distant, still float the darkness of jars.

Lying My Head Off

Here's my head, in a dank corner of the yard.
I lied it off and so off it rolled.
It wasn't unbelieving that caused it
To drop off my neck and lull down a slope.
Perhaps it had a mind of its own, wanted
to leave me for a little while.

Or it was scared and detached itself
from the stalk of my neck as a lizard's tail
will desert its body in fright of being caught.
The fact is, I never lied. The fact is,
I always lied. Before us, we have two mirrors.
At times, they say, one must lie in order

to survive. I drove by the house, passed
it several times, pretending it was not
my own. Its windows were red with curtains
and the honeyed light cast on the porch
did not succeed in luring me back inside.
I never lied. I drove by the house,

suckling the thought of other lovers
like a lozenge. I was pale as a papery birch.
I was pure as a brand new pair of underwear.
It will be a long while before I touch another.
Yet, I always lied, an oil slick on my tongue.
I used to think that I was wrong, could

not tell the truth for what it was. Yet, one
cannot take a lawsuit out on oneself.
I would have sworn in court that I believed
myself and then felt guilty a long time after.
I hated the house and I hated myself.
The house fattened with books, made me

grow to hate books, when all the while
it was only books that never claimed
to tell the truth. I hated him and I hated
his room, within which his cloud of smoke
heaved. I disappeared up narrow stairs,
slipped quick beneath the covers.

My stomach hurts, I told him, I was tired.
I grew my dreams thick through hot nights:
dear, flickering flowers. They had eyes
which stared, and I found I could not afford
their nurture, could not return their stare,
Meanwhile, liars began their parade

without my asking, strode sidewalks inches
before my doorstep. I watched their hulking
and strange beauty, their songs pregnant
with freedom, and became an other self.
I taught children how to curse.
I bought children gold pints of liquor.

I sold my mind on the street.
1 learned another language. It translates easily.
Here's how: What I say is not what I mean,

It is foolish
to let a young redwood
grow next to a house.

The Task

It is a simple garment, this slipped-on world.
We wake into it daily - open eyes, braid hair -

The Heart's Counting Knows Only One

In Sung China,
two monks friends for sixty years
watched the geese pass.
Where are they going?

That moment's silence continues.

No one will study their friendship
in the koan-books of insight.
No one will remember their names.

I think of them sometimes,
standing, perplexed by sadness,
goose-down sewn into their quilted autumn robes.

Almost swallowed by the vastness of the mountains,
but not yet.

As the barely audible
geese are not yet swallowed;
as even we, my love, will not entirely be lost.

A Hand

A hand is not four fingers and a thumb.

Nor is it palm and knuckles,
not ligaments or the fat's yellow pillow,
not tendons, star of the wristbone, meander of veins.

A hand is not the thick thatch of its lines
with their infinite dramas,
nor what it has written,
not on the page,
not on the ecstatic body.

Nor is the hand its meadows of holding, of shaping-
not sponge of rising yeast-bread,
not rotor pin's smoothness,

The maple's green hands do not cup
the proliferant rain.
What empties itself falls into the place that is open.

A hand turned upward holds only a single, transparent question.

The Weighing

The heart's reasons
seen clearly,
even the hardest
will carry
its whip-marks and sadness
and must be forgiven.

As the drought-starved
eland forgives
the drought-starved lion
who finally takes her,
enters willingly then
the life she cannot refuse,
and is lion, is fed,
and does not remember the other.

So few grains of happiness
measured against all the dark
and still the scales balance.

The world asks of us
only the strength we have and we give it.
Then it asks more, and we give it.

The Envoy

One day in that room, a small rat.
Two days later, a snake.

Who, seeing me enter,
whipped the long stripe of his
body under the bed,
then curled like a docile house-pet.

I don't know how either came or left.
Later, the flashlight found nothing.

For a year I watched
as something - terror? happiness? grief? -
entered and then left my body.

No knowing how it came in.
Not knowing how it went out.

It hung where words could not reach it.
It slept where light could not go.
Its scent was neither snake nor rat,
neither sensualist nor ascetic.

There are openings in our lives
of which we know nothing.

Through them
the belled herds travel at will,
long-legged and thirsty, covered with foreign dust.

Rebus

You work with what you are given,
the red clay of grief,
the black clay of stubbornness going on after.
Clay that tastes of care or carelessness,
clay that smells of the bottoms of rivers or dust.

Each thought is a life you have lived or failed to live,
each word is a dish you have eaten or left on the table.
There are honeys so bitter
no one would willingly choose to take them.
The clay takes them: honey of weariness, honey of vanity,
honey of cruelty, fear.

This rebus - slip and stubbornness,
bottom of river, my own consumed life -
when will I learn to read it
plainly, slowly, uncolored by hope or desire?
Not to understand it, only to see.

As water given sugar sweetens, given salt grows salty,
we become our choices.
Each yes, each no continues,
this one a ladder, that one an anvil or cup.

The ladder leans into its darkness.
The anvil leans into its silence.
The cup sits empty.

How can I enter this question the clay has asked?

Metempsychosis

Some stories last many centuries,
others only a moment.
All alter over that lifetime like beach-glass,
grow distant and more beautiful with salt.

Yet even today, to look at a tree
and ask the story Who are you? is to be transformed.

There is a stage in us where each being, each thing, is a mirror.

Then the bees of self pour from the hive-door,
ravenous to enter the sweetness of flowering nettles and thistle.

Next comes the ringing a stone or violin or empty bucket
gives off -
the immeasurable's continuous singing,
before it goes back into story and feeling.

In Borneo, there are palm trees that walk on their high roots.
Slowly, with effort, they lift one leg then another.

I would like to join that stilted transmigration,
to feel my own skin vertical as theirs:
an ant-road, a highway for beetles.

I would like not minding, whatever travels my heart.
To follow it all the way into leaf-form, bark-furl, root-touch,
and then keep walking, unimaginably further.

तू चिंगारी बनकर उड़ री, जाग-जाग मैं ज्वाल बनूँ,
तू बन जा हहराती गँगा, मैं झेलम बेहाल बनूँ।
आज बसन्ती चोला तेरा, मैं भी सज लूँ लाल बनूँ,
तू भगिनी बन क्रान्ति कराली, मैं भाई विकराल बनूँ।

यहाँ न कोई राधा-रानी, वृन्दावन, बंशीवाला।
तू आँगन की ज्योति बहन री, मैं घर का पहरे वाला।।

बहन प्रेम का पुतला हूँ मैं, तू ममता की गोद बनी,

समय के आईने में आरसी : त्रिपुरारि कुमार शर्मा

मेरी दृष्टि में आरसी प्रसाद सिंह ऐसे रचनाकार हैं, जिनके पाँव छायावाद की जड़ में जमे हैं और उंगलियाँ प्रगतिशीलता के पत्तों को छूती हैं। जो रोमांस के पेड़ों पर भारतीय दर्शन-चिंतन के फूल उगाते चलते हैं। जिनकी रचनाओं में न सिर्फ़ दैनिक जीवन की फ़िक्र है, बल्कि उसे सँवारने के उपाय भी। इन सबसे बढ़कर जो एक बात सामने आती है, वह है आम आदमी को एक इंसान के रूप में व्याख्यायित करना। उसके दुख-सुख को नजदीक से देखना और पार जाने के रास्ते भी बताना। इसीलिए मैं आरसी को ‘प्रेम और प्रगतिशीलता’ का कवि कहना चाहूँगा। आरसी की जन्मतिथि ((19 अगस्त) पर उनकी स्मृति को नमन करते हुए, प्रस्तुत है यह लेख - त्रिपुरारि कुमार शर्मा

किसे ख़बर थी कि छायावाद के तृतीय उत्थान के कवियों में विशेष स्थान रखने वाले रचनाकार के साथ समय ऐसा (निर्मम) न्याय करेगा। एक ऐसा कवि, जिसे ‘जीवन-जोश-जवानी’ और ‘आस्था-अर्पण-अध्यात्म’ का कवि कहा जाता है। एक ऐसा कथाकार, जिसकी कहानियों में वक़्त की महीन बुनावट का बेहतर नमूना मिलता है। एक ऐसा एकांकीकार, जिसके एकांकी नाटकों में सामाजिक, राजनीतिक तथा मनोवैज्ञानिक स्वरूप झलकता है। जिसके ख़िला़फ युवावस्था में ही तत्कालीन पत्रिका ‘युवक’ (सम्पादक : रामवृक्ष बेनीपुरी) में प्रकाशित रचनाओं में क्रांतिकारी शब्दों का प्रयोग करने पर अंग्रेजी हुकूमत ने गिरफ़्तारी का वारंट जारी कर दिया। जिसने न सिर्फ़ हिंदी भाषा, बल्कि मैथिली भाषा के साहित्य को भी समृद्ध किया। जिसे साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार सहित कई अन्य सम्मानों से नवाज़ा गया। जो देश-प्रदेश की अनेक संस्थाओं एवं सरकार द्वारा समय-समय पर सम्मानित और पुरस्कृत होता रहा। मैं बात कर रहा हूँ उस शख़्सियत की, जो एक साथ उपमा और उपमेय दोनों है। मैं बात कर रहा हूँ महान चिंतक, विशिष्ट साधक और युगाराध्य कवि आरसी प्रसाद सिंह की।

यह बात किसी अचरज से कम नहीं कि 74 वर्षों तक (किसी भी कवि के जीवन में सबसे लम्बा रचनाकाल) लगातार लिखने के बावजूद ‘आरसी और उनके साहित्य’ का विवेचन एक व्यापक दृष्टि के तहत नहीं किया गया। आलोचक यह कह कर अपना पल्ला झाड़ते रहे हैं कि आरसी के लेखन में कोई केंद्रीय भाव नहीं है। उनकी कोई तय विचारधारा या लेखन क्षेत्र नहीं है। एक आलोचक व्यक्तिवादी गीति कविता-धारा (जिसमें आरसी भी शामिल हैं) के बारे में लिखते हैं, “इनके पास जीवन-दृष्टि नहीं थी—न तो पुरानी आध्यात्मिक जीवन-दृष्टि और न नवीन समाजवादी दृष्टि। ये कवि अपने अनुभवों से परिचालित हो रहे थे, उनके अनुभव भावुक हृदय के अनुभव थे। उनकी दृष्टि रोमानी थी, अत: वे व्यक्ति को न तो सामाजिक शक्ति से जोड़ सके न आध्यात्मिक आदर्शों से। जीवन-दृष्टि के अभाव में यह व्यक्तिवादी अनुभव निराशा, मृत्यु की छाया और नियति बोध से ग्रस्त हैं।” मैं इनकी बातों से पूरी तरह सहमत नहीं हूँ। ठीक है कि आरसी (और उस समय के कवियों) के पास जीवन-दृष्टि नहीं थी। लेकिन मैं कहना चाहता हूँ कि जिनके पास जीवन-दृष्टि होती है, उनके पास जीवन नहीं होता। यह बात स्वंय साबित हो जाती है कि आरसी के पास जीवन-दृष्टि न सही, जीवन था। इसीलिए तो हम उन्हें जीवन और यौवन का कवि कहते हैं।

दूसरी बात, क्या बिना किसी दृष्टि के कविता सम्भव है? हाँ, आरसी की दृष्टि समय के साथ बदलती रही है, जिसे मैं सकारात्मक पक्ष समझता हूँ। आलोचक शायद इस बात से सहमत होंगे कि नदी तभी तक ज़िंदा मानी जाती है, जब तक उसमें प्रवाह है। अपनी रचनाओं में विविधता संजोने वाले आरसी ने गुणात्मक रूप से प्रयोग किए हैं। मुझे लगता है यही विविधता आरसी की सबसे बड़ी ख़ूबी है और सच्चा-सार्थक कवि होने का सबसे बड़ा प्रमाण भी। तीसरी बात, मैं नहीं मानता कि कविता का काम कोई आदर्श स्थापित करना नहीं है। न तो सामाजिक और न आध्यात्मिक। कविता तो सभी आदर्शों-अनादर्शों के पार ले जाती है। जहाँ से कवि की पुकार उठती है। यही पुकार आरसी को ‘उमर ख़य्याम’ की परम्परा से जोड़ती हुई आगे लेकर भी जाती है। जब आरसी कहते हैं : तेरा पथ जाता उधर जहाँ बहती निशिबासर मद-धारा / मेरे हित शूली, दमन, दंड मेरा विश्राम भवन कारा। / करबद्ध सदैव मनाता तू, मेरी मधुशाला रहे अचल। / मैं कहता, मानव की जय हो निर्भय हो जगतीतल सारा। (कलापी)

इसी सिलसिले में आचार्य जानकीवल्लभ शास्त्री का कथन उचित मालूम पड़ता हैं, “आरसी का काव्य मर्म-मूल से प्रलम्ब डालियों और पल्लव-पत्र-पुष्पों तक जैसा प्राण-रस संचारित करता रहा है, वह अन्यत्र दुर्लभ है। किसी एक विषय, स्वर या कल्पना के कवि वह नहीं हैं। उनकी सम्वेदना जितनी विषयों से जुड़ी हुई है, उनकी अनुभूति जितनी वस्तुओं की छुअन से रोमांचित है, उनका स्वर जितने आरोहों, अवरोहों में अपना आलोक निखारता है, कम ही कवि उतने स्वरों से अपनी प्रतिभा के प्रसार के दावेदार हो सकते हैं।” आरसी ने अपने जीवन काल में जब-जब जो-जो भोगा, लिखा। अडिग चट्टान बनकर उम्र के विभिन्न पड़ावों पर आने वाली बाधाओं का डटकर मुकाबला किया। उम्र भर नियंत्रण के ख़िलाफ आक्रोश ज़ाहिर करते रहे। जीवन को ‘निर्झर’ की तरह जिया। आरसी का साहित्य सच्चे अनुभवों की आग में पकी हुई फसल है। यह बात और है कि उनकी मस्ती से भरी रचनाएँ पाठकों को अधिक प्रिय हैं। आरसी ‘नई दिशा’ शीर्षक कविता में लिखते हैं : तुम मेरी मस्ती को देखो / इतनी मस्ती, इतनी मस्ती / मैं बहका-बहका जाता हूँ। / कुछ का कुछ हूँ सुन लेता मैं / कुछ का कुछ कह जाता हूँ। / जब आती है मौज किसी की / मैं तस्वीर सजा लेता हूँ। / जब उमंग उठती है / मैं ज़ंजीर बजा लेता हूँ।

इस मस्ती की एक वजह और भी है। कवि को मालूम है कि जीवन एक यात्रा है और जन्म-मरण दोनों एक ही सिक्के के दो पहलू है। इस सच से जिसका साक्षात्कार हो चुका हो वही लिख सकता है : सुंदरता अभिशाप विश्व का / सुंदरता वरदान प्रिये / इस क्षणभंगुर सुंदरता पर मत करना अभिमान प्रिये / यौवन के इस प्रखर तरणि को एक दिवस ढल जाना है / मृत्यु ताप लगते ही हिम की / इस छवि को गल जाना है। (कलापी) प्रसिद्ध आलोचक डॉ. नामवर सिंह ने आरसी की कृति ‘नन्ददास’ के बारे में लिखा है, “रोमांटिक कवियों में कुछ कवि आगे चलकर अध्यात्मवाद की ओर मुड़ गए और आरसी भी उनमें से एक हैं। निराला ने ‘तुलसीदास’ की जीवन कथा के माध्यम से देशकाल के शर से विंधकर ‘जागे हुए अशेष छविधर’ छायावादी कवि की छवि देखलाकर परम्परा का विकास किया तो कवि आरसी ने ‘नन्ददास’ के माध्यम से परम्परा का पुनरालेखन किया है।”

आरसी की कहानियों को पढ़ते हुए अक्सर जयशंकर प्रसाद का स्मरण हो उठता है। क्योंकि प्रसाद की कहानियों (उदाहरण के लिए ‘पुरस्कार’) में कई जगहों पर प्रेम और बलिदान का द्वंद्व दिखाई देता है। इस बात की पुष्टि हरीश जायसवाल के एक कथन से होती है। हरीश लिखते हैं, “आरसी बाबू की कहानियों में जहाँ प्रेम अपनी ऊँचाई पर दीख पड़ता है वहाँ बलिदान भी अपनी चरम सीमा पर स्थित मालूम होता है। सस्ते रोमांस की कमी उनकी कहानियों को और अधिक निखारने में बहुत हद तक कामयाब हुई है। प्रेम के नाम पर आधुनिक नीचता से कहानी अछूती मालूम होती है जो शुभ है।” सच तो यह है कि आरसी की कहानियों में एक विशेष प्रकार का मनोरंजक तत्व है। इसमें न सिर्फ़ भावना, कल्पना तथा यथार्थ का अद्भुत समन्वय है, बल्कि जीवन का मनोवैज्ञानिक विश्लेषण भी है।

जब हम एकांकी की बात करते हैं, तो इसमें भी भारतीय समाज की सांस्कृतिक पृष्ठभूमि स्पष्ट रूप से उभरकर सामने आती है। उदाहरण के लिए ‘पुनर्मिलन’ और ‘वैतरणों के तीर पर’। इसके अलावा, ‘जब दुनिया अबोध थी’ एकांकी में एक अजीब तरह की ‘फैंटेसी’ देखने को मिलती है। यह ‘फैंटेसी’ आरसी के विशाल कल्पना लोक का एक हिस्सा भर है। डॉ. रामचरण महेंद्र आरसी की एकांकियों का ज़िक्र करते हुए लिखते हैं, “आरसी प्रसाद सिंह एकांकियों में भी चिंतन-प्रधान गम्भीर साहित्य की सृष्टि कर सके हैं। इनमें समाज, धर्म, राजनीति, सामाजिक घटनाओं, भौतिकवाद, समाजवाद तथा साम्यवाद का विवेचन हुआ है।”

आज के दौर में जहाँ साहित्यकार बच्चों के लिए कम लिख रहे हैं, वहीं आरसी के यहाँ बच्चों के लिए विशेष सामग्री मौजूद है। बच्चों के मनोविज्ञान पर अच्छी पकड़ रखने वाले आरसी के बारे में समालोचक प्रताप साहित्यालंकार का कहना है, “आरसी शिशुओं और बालकों की अपेक्षा किशोरों के कवि हैं। कवि की अधिकांश कविताओं की रचना 12 से 16 वर्ष की उम्र के कोमल और सुकुमार मति वाले किशोरों के लिए हुई है। यद्यपि कवि ने शिशुओं के उपयुक्त काव्य का भी निर्माण किया है, तथापि उसका हृदय किशोरों के मनोरंजन के लिए ही अधिक उन्मुख है। उसे प्रकृति की ओर से बालसुलभ हृदय उपहार में मिला है, तभी वह तथ्यों को सरल और सरस बनाने की कला में निपुण है।” बच्चों के लिए लिखी गई पुस्तकों में चंदामामा, चित्रों में लोरियाँ, ओनामासी, रामकथा, जादू की वंशी, सोने का झरना, काग़ज़ की नाव, बाल गोपाल, हीरा-मोती, कथामाला, क़लम और बंदूक, जगमग आदि प्रमुख हैं।

कहते हैं कि एक रचनाकार अपनी रचनाओं में ज़िंदा रहता है। लेकिन उनके क़रीबी और ग्रामीण श्री जीवछ प्रसाद सिंह का कहना है, “आरसी बाबू की जितनी रचनाएँ प्रकाशित हुईं हैं, उससे कहीं ज़्यादा अप्रकाशित हैं।” पता नहीं कारण क्या है? कहा तो यह भी जाता है कि पांच दर्जन से अधिक पांडुलिपियां अब भी अप्रकाशित हैं। बिहार सरकार के कला एवं संस्कृति विभाग ने उनकी पांडुलिपियां जमा करवाईं, जो आज तक प्रकाशित नहीं हो सकीं। आरसी के प्रकाशित कविता संग्रह हैं : आजकल, कलापी, संचयिता, आरसी, जीवन और यौवन, नई दिशा, पांचजन्य, आरण्यक, द्वन्द्व समास, युद्ध अवश्यंभावी है, मैं किस देश में हूँ, चाणक्य शिखा, बदल रही है हवा, आस्था का अग्निकुण्ड, भारत सावित्री और पाती राम के नाम। गीतों का एकमात्र संकलन है ‘प्रेम गीत’। नंददास, संजीवनी, कुँवर सिंह, रजनीगंधा और पूर्णोदय इनके लिखे प्रबंध काव्य हैं। पंचपल्ल्व, खोटा सिक्का, काल-रात्रि, एक प्याला चाय, आँधी के पत्ते, वे तुतलाते थे और ठंडी छाया कहानी संग्रह हैं। इसके अलावा, मैथिली कविता संग्रह के नाम हैं : माटिक दीप, पूजाक फूल, मेघदूत, और सूर्यमुखी।

‘आरसी और उनके साहित्य’ पर समग्र विचार करना अब भी शेष है। मेरी दृष्टि में आरसी ऐसे रचनाकार हैं, जिनके पाँव छायावाद की जड़ में जमे हैं और उंगलियाँ प्रगतिशीलता के पत्तों को छूती हैं। जो रोमांस के पेड़ों पर भारतीय दर्शन-चिंतन के फूल उगाते चलते हैं। जिनकी रचनाओं में न सिर्फ़ दैनिक जीवन की फ़िक्र है, बल्कि उसे सँवारने के उपाय भी। इन सबसे बढ़कर जो एक बात सामने आती है, वह है आम आदमी को एक इंसान के रूप में व्याख्यायित करना। उसके दुख-सुख को नजदीक से देखना और पार जाने के रास्ते भी बताना। इसीलिए मैं आरसी को ‘प्रेम और प्रगतिशीलता’ का कवि कहना चाहूँगा। बागमती नदी के किनारे बसे गाँव एरौत की पावन धरती पर 19 अगस्त 1911 को जन्मे आरसी प्रसाद सिंह 15 नवम्बर 1996 को दुनिया से चले गए। उनकी सुलगती हुई साँसें अपने आप में सिमट कर बुझ गईं और चाहने वालों के ज़ेहन में कतराती हुई कतरनें फूटती रहीं। जब भी मुझे आरसी का ख़याल उभरता है, मेरी आँखों का कुँवारापन टूट जाता है और नींदें धज्जी-धज्जी हो जाती हैं।

आज आधुनिक हिन्दी साहित्य के श्रेष्ट गद्यकार मनोहर श्याम जोशी (09 अगस्त 1933 - 30 मार्च 2006) की जन्मतिथि है। वे व्यंग्यकार, पत्रकार, दूरदर्शन धारावाहिक लेखक, जनवादी-विचारक, फिल्म पट-कथा लेखक, उच्च कोटि के संपादक, कुशल प्रवक्ता तथा स्तंभ-लेखक भी थे। दूरदर्शन के प्रसिद्ध और लोकप्रिय धारावाहिकों- ' बुनियाद' 'नेताजी कहिन', 'मुंगेरी लाल के हसीं सपने', 'हम लोग' आदि के कारण वे भारत के घर-घर में प्रसिद्ध हो गए थे। वे रंग-कर्म के भी अच्छे जानकार थे । उन्होंने धारावाहिक और फिल्म लेखन से संबंधित 'पटकथा-लेखन' नामक पुस्तक की रचना की है। दिनमान' और 'साप्ताहिक हिन्दुस्तान' के संपादक भी रहे। उन्होंने ‘कूर्मांचली’ के नाम से कविताएँ भी लिखी थीं। उनकी जन्मतिथि के अवसर पर प्रस्तुत हैं कुछ कविताएँ।

सिराज फ़ैसल ख़ान की ग़ज़लें

'सिराज' फ़ैसल ख़ान ऐसा शायर है, जिसकी ग़ज़लों में रंग-ए-सियासत और रंग-ए-मुहब्बत समंदर के साहिल की तरह मौजूद है। एक आँख से देखने पर ये रंग दो दिखाई देते हैं, मगर दोनों आँखों से ये रंग दो नज़र नहीं आते। ख़ुशी होती है और ख़ुद पर यक़ीन आता है जब कोई शायर अपने शेरों में वजूद के बारीक टुकड़ों को बिखेरता भी है और समेटता भी। ऐसे में हवा के होंठों पर ग़ज़ल चस्पां हो जाती है और शायर बज़्म-ए-बहार में तन्हाई के नए फूल चुनने की ख़्वाहिश करता है। कलियाँ अपने आप चटकने लगती हैं। शायर इस बात से हैरान भी होता है और परेशान भी। मगर एक चीज़ जो शायर कभी नहीं भूलता वो है- वक़्त के सफ़ेद सफ़हे पर सियाह हर्फ़ों को दर्ज़ करना। 'सिराज' को यह काम बख़ूबी आता है। फिलहाल, 'सिराज' फ़ैसल ख़ान की कुछ ग़ज़लें - त्रिपुरारि कुमार शर्मा

Julian Randolph Stow (28 November 1935 – 29 May 2010) was an Australian writer. His novel To the Islands won the Miles Franklin Award in 1958. He was awarded the Patrick White Award in 1979. As well as producing fiction and poetry, he also wrote libretti for theatrical works by Peter Maxwell Davies. Presenting some poems.

Landfall

And indeed I shall anchor, one day—some summer morning
of sunflowers and bougainvillaea and arid wind—
and smoking a black cigar, one hand on the mast,
turn, and unlade my eyes of all their cargo;
and the parrot will speed from my shoulder, and white yachts glide
welcoming out from the shore on the turquoise tide.

And when they ask me where I have been, I shall say
I do not remember.

And when they ask me what I have seen, I shall say
I remember nothing.

And if they should ever tempt me to speak again,
I shall smile, and refrain.

My Wish for My Land

The Woman:

My wish for my land is that ladies be beautiful,
That horses be spirited and gentlemen courteous
And all moustaches faultless.

My wish for my husband is that he read Tennyson.
My wish for my daughter is that she be interesting
And capture a million acres.

My wish for my sons is that they be chivalrous,
Sun-tanned and tall, and that they bestow on me
Perhaps a dozen grandsons.

My wish for my house is that linen be Irish
And tableware sterling, and that the piano
Go never too long unplayed.

My wish for myself is that I grow matronly,
Straying in dove-grey silk through the roses
Under the far far harking of the crows.

The Enemy

As well, maybe, that you cannot read our minds;
There are worse tools than swords and rifle-butts.
My enemy: my passion. At dead of night,

Licking my wounds, I begin to think I love you.

Certainly none were ever so bound in love
As we are bound in hate: O my ideal.

One sight of you, and life grows meaningful.

THE LAND'S MEANING

The love of man is a weed of the waste places,
One may think of it as the spinifex of dry souls.

I have not, it is true, made the trek to the difficult country
where it is said to grow; but signs come back,
reports come back, of continuing exploration
in that terrain. And certain of our young men,
who turned in despair from the bar, upsetting a glass,
and swore: "No more" (for the tin rooms stank of flyspray)
are sending word that the mastery of silence

alone is empire. What is God, they say,
but a man unwounded in his loneliness?

And the question (applauded, derided) falls like dust
on veranda and bar; and in pauses, when thinking ceases,
the footprints of the recently departed
march to the mind's horizons, and endure.

And often enough as we turn again, and laugh,
cloud, hide away the tracks with an acid word,
there is one or more gone past the door to stand
(wondering, debating) in the iron street,
and toss a coin, and pass, to the township's end,
where one-eyed 'Mat, eternal dealer in camels,
grins in his dusty yard like a split fruit.

But one who has returned, his eyes blurred maps
of landscapes still unmapped, gives this account:

"The third day, cockatoos dropped dead in the air.
Then the crows turned back, the camels knelt down and stayed there,
and a skin-coloured surf of sandhills jumped the horizon
and swamped me. I was bushed for forty years.

"And I came to a bloke all alone like a kurrajong tree.
And I said to him: 'Mate - I don't need to know your name -
Let me camp in your shade, let me sleep, till the sun goes down."

O sea, give me news of my loved ones.

अमित कल्ला की रंग-जनित कविताएँ

जैसे एक अबोध शिशु ‘माँ’ शब्द से शुरुआत करते हुए शब्दकोष के सारे शब्दों को अपना लेता है, वैसे ही एक चित्रकार तीन प्रमुख रंगों (लाल, हरा और नीला) से शुरू कर दुनिया के तमाम रंगों को अपनी मुट्ठी में क़ैद कर लेता है। फिर जब और जहाँ उसका मन होता है, वह उन रंगों का इन्द्रधनुष बनाता है और देखने-पढ़ने वाले, उन बिन बरसात के धरती पर उतरे इन्द्रधनुषों की माया के भीतर क़ैद हो जाते हैं। जिस घड़ी कवि-चित्रकार अमित कल्ला, चित्र उकेर रहे होते होंगे तब कविता ज़रूर उनकी कूची को ताकती होगी और जब वे शब्दों के संगत में होते होंगे तो हँसते-खेलते शोख रंग उनकी हथेलियों बीच गुदगुदी कर बैठते होंगे। गौर करने की बात यह है कि जब हम अमित के चित्रों को देख रहे होते हैं या उनकी कविता पढ़ रहे होते हैं, तो उनकी कविताएँ, शब्दों की एक रंगी चादर पर अनगिनत रंगो के छीटें की तरह लगती है और उनके चित्र-बिम्ब समंदर की गिरती-उठती लहरों की तरह कैनवस पर मचलते जान पड़ते हैं। रंगों और बिम्बों का यहीं घालमेल उनकी कविताओं का खूबसूरत वितान रचता है। इस बात का पुख्ता सबूत हैं अमित कल्ला की रंग-जनित ये छोटी-छोटी कविताएँ - विपिन चौधरी

“उलटबाँसी”

ऐसा ही! मानो,
हर रोज़ का अनुभव हो
असंभव नहीं जहाँ

सत्यान्वेषण का अभियान है कविता : कुमार मुकुल

हाल में वरिष्ठ कवयित्री सविता सिंह का नया कविता-संग्रह आया है—स्वप्न समय। इसकी समीक्षा की है कवि-लेखक-संपादक कुमार मुकुल ने। यह समीक्षा आगरा से प्रकाशित ‘कल्पतरु एक्सप्रेस’ में छपी है, वहीं से साभार।

गुस्‍ताव जैनुक की पुस्‍तक 'काफ्का के संस्‍मरण' में एक जगह काफ्का कहते हैं, 'सपने दूसरे किस्‍म का पलायन हैं, जिसके अंत में हमकें घूम-फिर कर अपने तात्‍कालिक सच में उतरना पड़ता है। स्‍टीवेंसन को अपने 'ट्रेजर आइलैंड' में और मुझे...

आगे जैनुक इसे पूरा करते हैं, 'आपको...यहां दफ्तर, या अल्‍साडेटर रिंग में स्थित मकान में'।

सविता सिंह के तीसरे कविता संकलन का नाम है 'स्‍वप्‍न समय'। क्‍या शीर्षक में समय के इस पलायनवादी स्‍वरूप की ओर इशारा करना चाहती हैं सविता। 'अप्रत्‍याशित' कविता में वे लिखती हैं–

'इस स्‍वप्‍न समय में
गिरती हैं कैसी वे इच्‍छाएं
अधूरी रहीं जो
वे नग्‍नताएं आत्‍मा की
तडपती रहीं जो वस्‍त्र के लिए

गिरती हैं कैसे वे मीनारें हीरों-मोतियों से जड़ीं...लगती थीं वे बनाई गई थीं अमर होने के लिए—

वे सच्‍चाईयां थी कितनी पस्‍त
किसी घायल पक्षी की तरह आ गिरती हैं
हमारे इस समय में...

एक काल-खण्‍ड सिमट रहा है
शुरू होने के लिए नये सिरे से
स्‍वप्‍न में देख रही हैं आंखें एक अप्रत्‍याशित दृश्‍य'।

'इस स्‍वप्‍न समय में' सविता अपूर्ण इच्‍छाओं को गिरता देखती हैं तो हीरे-मोतियों जड़ी मीनारों को भी गिरता देखती हैं। यहां वे इस स्‍वप्‍न यानी पलायनवादी समय के यथार्थ को अगर गिरता-बिखरता देखती हैं, तो सिमटते काल-खण्‍ड के नये सिरे से शुरू होने का स्‍वप्‍न भी देखती हैं।

काफ्का लिखते हैं कि यथार्थ यथास्थिति को बदलता है और सविता का स्‍वप्‍न उसी बदलाव का स्‍वप्‍न है। एक तरह से कह सकते हैं कि भविष्‍य का नया यथार्थ इस पलायनवादी समय में सविता के स्‍वप्‍नों के माध्‍यम से अपनी जमीन पाना चाहता है, नये सिरे से शुरू होना चाहता है।

'स्‍वप्‍न' और 'रात' शब्‍द का प्रयोग सविता की कविताओं में बारहा होता है। ये दोनों ही शब्‍द स्‍त्री के पर्याय हैं सविता के लिए। एक जगह वे लिखती हैं –

'क्‍या स्‍त्री सचमुच रात है जैसा मैं जानती हूँ
या रात में स्‍वप्‍न है वह'।
उनके भीतर एक सवाल भी है–

'क्‍या स्‍वप्‍न और स्‍त्री एक ही हैं'।

सविता की कविताएँ रात और स्‍वप्‍न की इस धुरी के आस-पास घूमती रहती हैं। रात और उसका रहस्‍य स्‍त्री को अस्तित्‍ववान करते हैं। अपने अंधेरों में ही बचाकर विकसित करती हैं वे भविष्‍य के जीवन को, सुबहों को। इस रहस्‍य की रक्षा के लिए नींद जरूरी है। सविता सिंह के एक संकलन का नाम ही है 'नींद थी और रात थी'। नींद और रात के इस रहस्‍य के नष्‍ट होते जाने को लेकर चिंतित हैं सविता। वे देखती हैं कि वर्तमान व्‍यवस्‍था का हमला सृष्टि के इस आदिम रचनात्‍मक रहस्‍य पर बढ़ता जा रहा है। उस आदिम रहस्‍य को उसकी समग्रता में जानने वाले आदिवासियों को और अन्‍य दलितों को यह व्‍यवस्‍था नष्‍ट कर देना चाहती है। 'अनिद्रा में' कविता में वे लिखती हैं –

‘कितने थोड़े भरे पेटों के लिए
जंगल के जंगल कारतूस और बंदूकों से लैस अ ब
रात भर जगे रहते हैं पेड
कुछ बच नहीं पा रहा।
ना मर्द, ना औरतें, ना बच्‍चे
ना रात न उसका रहस्‍य'।

वे चिंतित हैं कि यह व्‍यवस्‍था भाविष्‍यप्रसूता अंधकार को ही नष्‍ट कर रही है। यहाँ 'स्‍वप्‍न बुलेट-सी बिंधी आंख' बन गए हैं और अनिद्रा और रहस्‍यहीनता में एक नया ही देश तैयार हो रहा है जिसमें मर्द-औरत-बच्‍चे-रात कुछ भी नहीं बचे पा रहे। वहां तथाकथित विकास की अंधा करती चौंधियाहट शेष रह जाती है।

इस नए देश के नागरिक चुप्‍पा किस्‍म के लोग हैं, जो बचे रहने को अपनी पथरीली अभिव्‍यक्ति से पाटते जा रहे भाषा को। यह पथराती भाषा अब कवयित्री का लिखना असंभव कर रही है। उसे लगता है कि—

'अब लिखना संभव नही
अब शामिल होना होगा किसी गति में
कुछ बदल रहा है
किन्‍हीं जंगलों में चले जाना होगा
जहां जीवन टकरा रहा है मृत्‍यु से।'

यहां वर्तमान की विडंबनाओं से पार पाने को कवयित्री खुद को जीवन की उस गति में शामिल करना चाहती है जो मृत्‍यु से टकरा रही है। क्‍योंकि ये विडंबनाएं रात और स्‍वप्‍न और स्‍त्री के अस्तित्‍व को ही ग्रसती नजर आ रही हैं। अनस्तित्‍वता के संकट से दो-चार होतीं वे अतीत की उस सकारात्‍मक विचार भूमि पर लौटती हैं जहां जाकर एक स्‍त्री एक पुरूष की तरह विचारों की अमरता का बोध अपने भीतर जाग्रत कर सकती है, जहां वह अपनी अनश्‍वरता व निरंतरता को पहचान सकती है-

'मैं स्‍वयं काम हूं स्‍वयं रति
अनश्‍वर स्‍त्री
संभव नहीं मृत्‍यु मेरी'।

यहां आप 'अहं ब्रम्‍हास्मि' की ध्‍वनि को महसूस कर सकते हैं।

रात, स्‍वप्‍न और स्‍त्री के रहस्‍यों से पार पाने की कोशिश में सविता सहज ढंग से उन्‍हीं निष्‍कर्षें तक पहुंचती नजर आती हैं जहां हमारे ख्‍यातिप्राप्‍त मनोवैज्ञानिक पहुंचे हैं। प्रसिद्ध मनोवैज्ञानिक एडलर अपने अध्‍ययन के पश्‍चात इस निष्‍कर्ष पर पहुंचते हैं कि -' सपने आत्‍मवंचना को बल देते हैं और वे सोद्देश्‍य होते हैं...सपने व्‍यक्ति की स्‍मृति से ही अपना चुनाव करते हैं और श्रेष्‍ठता के उसके निजी ध्‍येय का पक्ष लेते हैं... सपने अक्‍सर हमें धोखा देते हैं क्‍योंकि वे अक्‍सर आसान हल की ओर इशारा कर रहे होते हैं। सविता सिंह भी स्‍वप्‍नों को लेकर शंका जाहिर करती हैं –

'क्‍या स्‍वप्‍न का भी होता है कोई मुखौटा
उसका चेहरा भी कहीं वहीं तो नहीं
जिसे वह छुपाए हुए है...।’

गुस्‍ताव जैनुक से बातें करते काफ्का कहते हैं – ‘ ... लेकिन क्‍या मनुष्‍य से बढकर कोई रहस्‍य है। कविता इसका अन्‍वेषण करती है। कविता हमेशा सत्‍यान्‍वेषण का अभियान है।‘ सत्‍यान्‍वेषण का यह अभियान सविता की कविताओं में भी बारहा दिखता है। इस सत्‍यान्‍वेषण के क्रम में वे जानती हैं और बताती हैं कि इस सत्‍यान्‍वेषण की भी सीमाएं हैं। उसी तरह कविता की भी सीमाएं हैं और जीवन की भी-

’कब किसी ने मुझे समझाया
भाषा ही संसार है
जिसे हम जितना जानते हैं
उतना नहीं भी
और इसके आगे का हर प्रयत्‍न
एक विफल उडान है मनुष्‍यता की।‘

काफ्का भी लिखते हैं –‘ ... कोई कितना भी जान ले, मनुष्‍य अपने पार नहीं जा सकता।‘

यूं तो प्रेम की रूढियों पर भी लिखा है सविता सिंह ने। पर प्रेम की विकलता को उसकी बहुस्‍तरीयता में जिस तरह दिखाती हैं सविता, वह अनोखा है। उस तडप में कैसे हम समय की तलवार को उसकी धार की तरफ से पकडते हैं और रक्‍त की धार से ही उसे कुंद करने की कोशिश करते अपने ही बहाए रक्‍त पर रीझते हैं। प्रेम की इस दुर्निवार बेचैनी को ‘बचा हुआ धीरज’ कविता में वे बिल्‍कुल्‍ नये ढंग से अभिव्‍यक्‍त करती हैं –

‘तभी समा गयी फिर से एक अधीरता प्रेम पाने की
फिर से सबकुछ अस्‍त – व्‍यस्‍त हो गया
गर्क काले रंग में बादलों के
चांद की तरह उजागर हुई एक नयी तडप
धरती आसामान एक करती हुई।‘’

कुल‍ मिलाकर सविता की कविताएं इस कठिन समय में अपनी अभिव्‍यक्ति की संभावनाओं को जानने और समय के पार उसके भाविष्‍य तक जाने का जरिया बनती हैं।

कविता की मुलायम बेल, दार्शनिकता की सीधी-सपाट दीवार पर बमुश्किल ही चढ़ पाती है, पर एक कवि के रूप में समर्थ वशिष्ट ऐसा कर सकने में पूर्णत समर्थ जान पड़ते हैं। उनकी कविताओं में जीवन-दर्शन की बारीकियां दर्ज़ हैं, जो कविता के शब्दों में आसानी से चाशनी की तरह घुल-मिल जाती हैं। दर्शन के दैनंदिनी सिद्धांत जो सामान्यतः आज के दौर में एक ढेले की तरह सड़क के किनारे कर दिए गए हैं, उन्हीं नज़रंदाज़ कर दिए गए दार्शनिकता के सिद्धांतों को कवि समर्थ एक धातु की तरह इस्तेमाल कर सटीक समिक्ष्रण बनाते हैं, जो कविता की नर्म तासीर को यथावत बनाए रखता है। समर्थ की कविता गहरी समझ की कविता है, जो खरगोश की तरह सरपट न भाग कर एक कछुए की तरह इंतज़ार की आहटों को गुना करती हैं। आईए समर्थ वशिष्ट की इन कविताओं से रूबरू हुआ जाए - विपिन चौधरी

स्त्रियाँ

मैंने देखा है उन्हें
ऐन पगलाहट के क्षणों में भी
होश संभाले
चीख़ते-चिल्लाते

विशाल सेनाएं कदमताल करतीं हैं
क्षितिज तक

ऊंघते हुए मुझे कहानियां सुनाती है

मेरी बांहों में पिघलती एक स्त्री
मेरे शरीर के सब अंगों को
जोड़े रखती है एक साथ

हज़ारों साल से जारी है इंतज़ार
औरतें जो चली गईं
उनका बाक़ी नहीं कोई निशान

Margaret Eleanor Atwood, (born November 18, 1939) is a Canadian poet, novelist, literary critic, essayist, and environmental activist. Clarke Award and Prince of Asturias award for Literature, has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times, winning once, and has been a finalist for the Governor General's Award several times, winning twice. She is also a founder of the Writers' Trust of Canada, a non-profit literary organization that seeks to encourage Canada's writing community. The air clear sweat, mosquitoes
& their tracks; birds & elusive.

Time comes in waves here, a sickness, one
day after the other rolling on;
I move up, it's called
awake, then down into the uneasy
nights but never
forward. The roosters crow
for hours before dawn, and a prodded
child howls & howls
on the pocked road to school.
In the hold with the baggage
there are two prisoners,
their heads shaved by bayonets, & ten crates
of queasy chicks. Each spring
there's race of cripples, from the store
to the church. This is the sort of junk
I carry with me; and a clipping
about democracy from the local paper.

Outside the window
they're building the damn hotel,
nail by nail, someone's
crumbling dream. A universe that includes you
can't be all bad, but
does it? At this distance
you're a mirage, a glossy image
fixed in the posture
of the last time I saw you.
Turn you over, there's the place
for the address. Wish you were
here. Love comes
in waves like the ocean, a sickness which goes on
& on, a hollow cave
in the head, filling & pounding, a kicked ear.

Morning in the Burned House

In the burned house I am eating breakfast.
You understand: there is no house, there is no breakfast,
yet here I am.

The spoon which was melted scrapes against
the bowl which was melted also.
No one else is around.

Where have they gone to, brother and sister,
mother and father? Off along the shore,
perhaps. Their clothes are still on the hangers,

their dishes piled beside the sink,
which is beside the woodstove
with its grate and sooty kettle,

every detail clear,
tin cup and rippled mirror.
The day is bright and songless,

the lake is blue, the forest watchful.
In the east a bank of cloud
rises up silently like dark bread.

I can see the swirls in the oilcloth,
I can see the flaws in the glass,
those flares where the sun hits them.

I can't see my own arms and legs
or know if this is a trap or blessing,
finding myself back here, where everything

In the Secular Night

In the secular night you wander around
alone in your house. It's two-thirty.
Everyone has deserted you,
or this is your story;
you remember it from being sixteen,
when the others were out somewhere, having a good time,
or so you suspected,
and you had to baby-sit.
You took a large scoop of vanilla ice-cream
and filled up the glass with grapejuice
and ginger ale, and put on Glenn Miller
with his big-band sound,
and lit a cigarette and blew the smoke up the chimney,
and cried for a while because you were not dancing,
and then danced, by yourself, your mouth circled with purple.

Now, forty years later, things have changed,
and it's baby lima beans.
It's necessary to reserve a secret vice.
This is what comes from forgetting to eat
at the stated mealtimes. You simmer them carefully,
drain, add cream and pepper,
and amble up and down the stairs,
scooping them up with your fingers right out of the bowl,
talking to yourself out loud.
You'd be surprised if you got an answer,
but that part will come later.

There is so much silence between the words,
you say. You say, The sensed absence
of God and the sensed presence
amount to much the same thing,
only in reverse.
You say, I have too much white clothing.
You start to hum.
Several hundred years ago
this could have been mysticism
or heresy. It isn't now.
Outside there are sirens.
Someone's been run over.
The century grinds on.

Having walked into a dead end
what do you do?

Return
after staring at it?

Unable to believe this is where
you were headed to.

Kick yourself for not seeing
where it would all lead.

Blame the lack of something
in your childhood for what you have turned out to be.

Accept that all your life you have only prepared
to walk into dead ends.

Seek directions from strangers.
Finally, nudge your sleeping instincts

to guide unsure steps.
Concentrate in the middle of the forehead

to awaken the third-eye
the opening of which will burn down forever, all distraction.

Mobile Phones

They have memories.
the numbers you dialled

how often
how long?

They store messages
as templates of pain and pleasure.

Phones, they die
and refuse to ring,

or receive a message
that is only in the mind.

No network
taps that nerve.

Who waits past these arrives

In the interlude years

your tight-lipped half smile does not reach your eyes.

The body is treacherous
it reveals more than we care to share,

The frame has not changed but the picture has.
Your defenses are unimpeachable,
like a good soldier
you are covered from all sides

You are standing with arms crossed against your chest
in your characteristic defensive posture
as I first remember you.

Your eyes are watchful, like a cat
even if there are bags under them
suggesting poor sleep.

Your crimson shirt does not soften the pallor of your face
your mouth is clamped shut without a hint of emotion
except a brusque tension.

You are all there, solid.
Not about to fall apart
held together by a sheer will for life.

Sunday in your city

You were still half asleep
dreaming unrecalled dreams
when I entered quietly
your city of ports
through the south gate.

Half asleep myself
my mouth open
inhaling the morning breeze
coming in waves towards me

रोशनी मेरी भटका सकती है

आँसुओं से लिखा ख़त है ये
चाँदनी में पढ़ा कीजिए

दिल की सुनना ज़रूरी है क्या
अक़्ल से मशवरा कीजिए

दीजिए दिल हमें दीजिए

लग गया आपका हमसे दिल
जाइए अब मज़ा कीजिए

घर को घर की तसल्ली रहे

कोई तितली पकड़ लें अगर

प्रेम कविताएँ लिखना किसी भी कवि का पहला और स्वाभाविक आकर्षण होता है। हमारे युवा कवि सुशील कृष्नेत भी नहीं बच सके। गाँव और शहर के बीच पढ़ाई से लेकर प्रेम तक की यात्रा करने के बाद कवि को पता चलता है कि वह ऐसे मुहाने पर आ खड़ा हुआ है, जहाँ से कोई भी रास्ता किसी भी ओर नहीं जाता। यानि वह जिस जगह है, न तो उसे छोड़ने की जल्दी है और न उसके मन में पकड़े रखने का आग्रह। इस सादेपन का प्रति-उत्तर एक लम्बी चुप्पी के सिवा कुछ नहीं हो सकता। इसीलिए कवि होंठों पर चुप की मुहर लगा कर सृजन में जुट जाता है और हवा हर पल प्रेयसी होने का भ्रम उत्पन्न करती है। फोटोग्राफी में गहरी दिलचस्पी रखने वाले सुशील फिलहाल दिल्ली यूनिवर्सिटी से पीएचडी कर रहे हैं। आज उनके जन्मदिन के बहाने आईए पढ़ते हैं सुशील कृष्नेत की कविताएँ - त्रिपुरारि

बीता सावन

कुछ साल पहले
कुछ ऐसे ही मेहरबान हुआ था मौसम
कुछ ऐसे ही बरसी थीं बूंदें
जिनसे तर हो कर
फूटे थे कुछ सपनों के अंखुए
पहली बार थामी थी हथेलियाँ परस्पर
सायास
बढ़ी धड़कनों और सूखते गले के बीच
फिर उनमें साथ साथ रोपी थीं कुछ बारिश की बूंदें
उछाला था उन्हें ऊपर
फिर
वही मोती बन कर
बरस पड़ीं तुम पर
कुछ क़तरे अटक गए तुम्हारी पलकों पर
उन मोतियों के बहाने चूमा था तुम्हारी पलकें

उम्र की एक लंबी जेठ के बाद
आया था मेरे जीवन मे वह सावन
और फिर...
आज सुलग रहा हूँ एक वैसी ही बारिश में
अंखुओं से फूटे सपने
झाड़ बन गए हैं अब
सोचा है इस बार पूस की रातों में
उन सपनों का अलाव तापूंगा...

होना उतना नहीं होता

होना उतना नहीं होता
जितना तुम्हारा न होना,
जब घर में होती हो तब एक बारगी; एक जगह होती हो...
किचेन में गोल-गोल रोटियाँ सेंकते,
कलाई में गोल-गोल चूड़ियाँ खनकाते,
मुन्ने की ठुड्ढी पकड़ बाल संवारते
और कभी-कभी गृह-मंत्रालय का बजट समझाते॥
ऐसे ही कई फ्रेमों में बंटी-छंटी-थकी और ....पस्त !
पर आज जब नहीं हो
तो एक साथ सब जगह हो घर में
सर्वव्यापी।
दरवाजे की उस पहली दरार
जो खुलने से पहले दिखाती है तुम्हारी झलक
...से लेकर
झाड़ू की मूठ पर पड़े तुम्हारी उँगलियों के निशान तक।
कहाँ नहीं हो?
बिस्तर पर फिंके गीले तौलिये पर चिपका है तुम्हारा ताना-
"कोई और होती न तब पता चलता ..."
फर्श के पोंछे का वह कपडे का टुकड़ा , जो भीगा है तुम्हारे आदेश से-
"चप्पलें बाहर..."
आईने पर वो पुरानी बिंदियाँ जो चिपकीं हैं तुम्हारे सौन्दर्याभिमान के गोंद से-
"अभी भी ऐसी दिखती हूँ कि..."
तकिया फूली है तुम्हारे जिद के फाहे से
जो बन जाती थी हमारे बीच का बाघा बार्डर
शर्ट की कालर से उलझा है तुम्हारा इक बाल
जो वक्तेरुखसत की आखिरी निशानी है।
सच कहूं मेरी परिणीता!
तुम्हारा होना उतना नहीं होता
जितना तुम्हारा न होना...

गेट वे ऑफ़ इंडिया

गहरे समन्दर के किनारे
खड़ी एक इमारत,
जिसने देखी है...
एक हुकूमत की दोपहरी और सांझ,
पनाह दी है...
लथपथ कबूतरों को
93...26 /11 के नम्बरों के साथ,
शामिल है...
पहली मुलाक़ात की तस्वीरों में,
लौटते देखा है...
खाली हाथों को,
दिखाया है...
दूर से ख्वाबों का ऐसगाह,
साबित हुआ है...
पास से सपनों की कब्रगाह,
......और भी बहुत कुछ
जो समंदर के उस पार छिपा है
भविष्य के धुधलके में,
जिसका आना;
किनारे लगना;
अभी बाकी है

चाँद और रक़ीब

मैंने कहा तुम चाँद हो;
कोयल हो;
बारिश की फुहार हो;
और भी बहुत कुछ...
तुम्हारी उनीदीं आखें सिकुडीं;
कुन्मुनायीं;
भौहें तनीं;
लबों से गुस्सा फूटा
मुझे ये सब नहीं पसंद,
'मैं' बस 'मैं' हूँ
तुम्हारी 'मन' और कुछ भी नहीं.
मैं मर गया तुम्हारे पे
तुम्हारे गुस्से पे.
और पूछा
'जब मैं नहीं रहूँगा तब?'
तुमने रख दीं अपनी हथेली मेरे होंठ पे.
और बोली

'हम दोनों तारे बन जायेंगे'
एक दिन सच में मैं नहीं रहा.
तुम्हे तारा पसंद था और मैं बन गया इक तारा
ताकता रहा तुम्हे छत पे कई रातें.
इक रात देखा मैंने
तुम किसी के साथ थी शायद 'रकीब';
तुम्हारी फरमाईश पे वो इक गीत गुनगुना रहा था.
तुम्हें चाँद कह रहा था;
तुम्हें कोयल कह रहा था;
तुम्हें बारिश की बूँद कह रहा था;
और भी बहुत कुछ.
तुम मुस्कुरा रही थी.
इतने में ('मैं' ) इक तारा टूट के गिरा
तुम्हारे पास से गुजरा.
तुम छुप गयी (रकीब) के सीने में
ये कहती मुझे तारे नहीं पसंद.
उसने कहा
'हाँ, जनता हूँ 'मन''.

यार गुलज़ार

तुम जो कह दो तो
चाँद आज की क्या?
किसी भी रात नहीं डूबेगा;
जागेगा सारी रात तुम्हारी निम्मी -निम्मी नज्मों जैसा।
बेसुवादी रतियों में भी
तुम दिखा जो देते हो चाँद के अक्स में
रोटी, कभी चिकना साबुन,
कभी माँ ;कभी महबूबा।
तुम्हारा कुछ न कुछ सामान पड़ा है उनके पास
जो पस्मीनें की रातों में
प्यार के कुछ लम्हें फिलहाल जी लेना चाहतें हैं।
तुम्हारे प्यार के पत्ते झर भी जाएँ
पर उनकी खुशबू कभी चुप नहीं होती।
कभी तो खुद रांझा बन जाती है;
पर्सनल से सवाल करती है;
इश्क का नमक बन जाती है;
कभी नीम तो कभी शहद बन जाती है।
उम्र भले ही पक के सुफैद हो गयी हो
पर महसूसने पे तो यही लगता है
दिल तो बच्चा है जी!

तुम्हारी नज्मों से हर दिल की धड़कनें बढ़ जाएँ।
बहुत लाजिम है कि
तुम्हारे साए को छूने को हर ज़वां आशिक़ तरस जाए।
बहुत लाजिम है कि
मुल्क़ के हर कमरे की दीवारों पर तेरी तस्वीर लग जाए।

ज़ब इतना हो चुका हो या की फिर हो रहा हो तो...
पलट कर देख लेना भीड़ की उस आखिर आखों को...
ज़रा सा गौर कर सुन लेना उसकी तेज़ साँसों को।
बहुत लाजिम है कि
तब इतने से ही वो तसल्ली से मर पाए...
बहुत लाजिम है कि
उसकी बेचैन रूह ख़ामोश हो जाए...!

पीयूष मिश्रा की नज़्में

पीयूष मिश्रा की नज़्मों में को पढ़ते हुए ऐसी ख़ुशी का एहसास होता है—जैसे कोई मासूम-सा बच्चा नदी के बहते हुए पानी को अपनी ओक में भरकर ख़ुश हो जाता है—जैसे उसने नदी को मुट्ठी में बंद कर लिया हो। पीयूष की नज़्में ऐसे उफ़क़ का दरवाज़ा खोलती हैं, जो हिंदी और उर्दू से बना है। जहाँ ये दो ज़बान आपस में घुल-मिल जाती हैं और एक तीसरी दुनिया की तरफ़ रुख़ करती हैं। पेश हैं पीयूष मिश्रा की नज़्में - त्रिपुरारि कुमार शर्मा

ख़त

रात-रात भर
जाग-जाग कर
नज़्मों की शक्लों में तुमको
कितने ही ख़त लिखता था

कितना अरसा गुज़र गया अब
नज़्में कहना भूल गया हूँ
ख़त लिखना अब छोड़ दिया है

पता तुम्हारा बदल गया है!

ख़ामोशी

बातें करते हुए अक्सर
तुम चुप हो जाती हो
और मुझ तक बस तुम्हारी
आती-जाती साँसों की
आवाज़ आती है-
नि-रे-ग-रे-नि-रे-सा-
राग यमन के
आरोह-अवरोह की तरह-

तुम्हारी ख़ामोशी भी कितनी सुरीली है!

शहर और नदी

कितने ही लोग हैं
शहर में मेरे
मिलने किससे मगर मैं कहाँ जाऊँ?
किसी को तो मैं जानता नहीं हूँ
(पहचानता मुझे भी कोई कहाँ है?)

वो एक नदी थी
उत्तर दिशा में शहर के
घाट पर जिसके, बचपन मैं में
बैठा रहता था घंटों
वो मेरे पैरों को गुदगुदाती थी,
खेलती थी, बहती रहती थी
मगर अब वहाँ भी शहर है
जो मुझसे बात नहीं करता
(वो मुझको जानता नहीं ना)

सुनता हूँ नदी है अब भी वहीँ पर
जानता हूँ वो होगी कहीं पर-
उत्तर दिशा में शहर के
(नाला शहर का आखिर जाता कहाँ है?)

मैं दुनिया से ऊब चुका हूँ

हँसना-रोना, पाना-खोना
पा कर खोना, खो कर पाना
सीधे रस्ते, ठोकर खाना

इन बातों का क्या मतलब है
इन बातों को भूल चुका हूँ

वीरानो में, सन्नाटो में
दर्द की अंधेरी रातों में
अपनी ज़ात को छोड़ आया हूँ

हर ज़र्रा मुझमें शामिल है
मैं ज़र्रों में डूब चुका हूँ

मैं शहरों में, मैं जंगल में
पर्वत-पर्वत, सहराओं में
अपनी ही धुन में रहता हूँ

दुनिया मुझको देख रही है
मैं दुनिया से ऊब चुका हूँ
