I am constantly looking for new ideas on DIY wall art, because when I see a blank wall, I get a bit anxious. My idea about a piece of good DIY wall art is innovative, unique, cheap, aesthetically beautiful and showing the effort of craftsmanship but not too hard to achieve. That’s why when I saw the Paper Quilt from A Little Hut, my heart totally voted for it and I knew I had to make it myself.

So here is what they look like. It took me 3 nights to finish them. This morning I temporarily stuck them on the wall to see how it looks. I think they are just as good as what I could have ever imagined. They are clean, crispy, safe above the bed (only the weight of a piece of stock card paper will not hurt anybody on the bed), and beautiful.

I used a white folder instead of white card stock paper, as it is slightly heavier. Of course I had to use my favourite craft knife to cut through all the lines. I did try with different coloured background paper, but I prefer them to remain just white. The coloured background would look good if it is to use as a box cover, but too busy on the wall. I think if I ever want to make any changes next time, I will be bold to design my own pattern, probably more free style looking.

I think it is the so far the best wall art I have ever created. I am really happy with the result. Now I just need to buy some 3M strips to stick them properly.

I was kind of sick of shooting flowers, though I haven’t captured a perfect one in the past many years (I probably will never do). I really think the opening time should be from 7am to 6pm, in stead of 9am to 5pm. The lighting is just terrible and ugly plain white for this period of time. That’s why you can only see photos here with other objects I found in the event.

Vivian was so good today. For the entire visit, she was in her stroller and no whinge at all. Just for this, I want to kiss her for being a good girl:-)

Last year I planted some wheat grass which turned out really nicely and gave a dash of green to the home, setting our mood into the lovely spring season.

This year I was looking for even simpler idea for in-house plants. It caught my eyes immediately when I saw mustard and water cress seeds in the pack the other day in the shop. On the pack, it doesn’t seem that they would need any soil or a lot of care. I decided to give them a go, now you can see the result from the photos, except no progression photos at different growth stage.

I used a long shallow ceramic tray for water cress, with a piece of kitchen paper towel which I wet it and folded several times to make it a few layers to fit into the shape of the bottom of the tray. There is no need to SOAK seeds, and please DO NOT SOAK THEM if you want them to survive. Just spread seeds into single layer on the top of paper towel. No worries about seeds being too crowded.

All I did other than the above was to wait. Just a little bit sprinkle of water once a day which is ample enough. I think it took a little bit longer time for them to germinate, than wheat grass, but very similar time frame I would say. Initially the seeds developed some gelatine liked water shell around each seed. Here is what I learned from my failure. Gelatinous seeds do not drain well and may decay from too much moisture. That’s why you do not need to soak them, otherwise you will kill them from the beginning. This happened to my mustard seed, sadly:-(

I guess it took about a week to see the little shoots coming up, then another week to have them grow into about 3-4 cm length. The brown seed shell eventually fell off from the leaves, and fresh green colour came out. They are very pretty with interesting curled leaves, and I left them on the bedroom window sill for a bit of lively decoration.

I think the beauty of water cress is they can grow in any small and shallow containers, even in a broken egg shell. Because they don’t need soil, it is really a no-mess and stress-free gardening project.

The only question left here is “how long they are going to last?” I am curious to find out. Hold my breath……

We came back from our little trip to Snowy Rivers. It was a cold and wet weekend until the day we were leaving, just like last time when we were in Jindabyne.

The place we stayed in Town is called Aspire Alpine Brumby Bar. It is a lovely little apartment loft style accommodation. Old bricked interior with interesting lightings. We have a balcony with the view of lake and mountain, facing the road but amazingly we remain undisturbed by the traffic during the night time. Country town, right?

We cooked our Korean BBQ and hot pot for two nights, and hearty breakfast with congee and other stuff by Jessy for two mornings. The bedroom upstairs got extremely hot during the night time with the remaining smell of hot pot and BBQ, hehe….. Vivian kept kicking the blanket off and I only covered myself with one piece of flat sheet. Outside easily went down to minus 2.

I don’t know how much the little ones would get out of this trip. They were more interested in playing in the play ground which everywhere has it, than sensing the difference in the places.

Our second day was spent in Thredbo and Lake Crackenback Resort. Rain was on and off. I absolutely fell in love with the little village, Thredbo. It is so pretty with layered houses along the mountain slope, snow capped mountains as the far background. I think I will come back again even I don’t know how to ski, but it was exciting enough to see those fit people carry their ski gears coming off from the mountain. I can’t believe that it is a place only 2.5 hours away from where we live and we didn’t utilise it at all in the past many years.

Shall we come back again? Definitely. There are a lot interesting things we could have captured. The stone field 10ks outside the Cooma town, shooting the Jindabyne lake view for a sunset or sunrise, trout fishing, maybe staying in the waterfront apartment in Lake Crackenback Resort next time, try a nice restaurant in Jindabyne? These all are going to the next time’s plan.
