I couldn’t for the life of me understand how they could pick this person --------->
as the PRETTIEST ~~Christian~~ WOMAN IN LEBANON. Come on!! I’ve had prettier bouts of diarrhea.

But thankfully this year they picked a real gem. I love the new Miss Lebanon (her name is Yara Khoury Mikahel.)

Her skin tone is awesomely olive, unlike the pasty dipped-in-flour look our 2010 Miss Lebanon was sporting last year.

Her hair is really shiny and bouncy!

Her boobs are most likely fake but I don't really see a problem with that.

Asshole of the Week: The American University of Beirut (AUB)

Hello All!

As you may know I tied the knot last month and moved. I shall be referred to as DubaiBeauty from now on.

I haven’t blogged in a while but decided to do so when I read this article.

Some crazy shit is going down at the American University of Beirut. This scandal is so bad that it actually made its’ way to New York, where the university is licensed.

According to a report written by an ousted millionaire trustee, AUB has been mismanaging its funds and 200 million dollars have found their way into the trustee pockets. (200 MILLION DOLLARS!? Da fuck?)

Another surprising allegation is the fact the AUB is selling electricity to non-university members. I am sure you are aware of the electricity crisis in Lebanon, and the beloved university has been profiteering from it.... for 30 YEARS!

Now on to the AUB Medical Center, supposedly the best in the region. The report claims there has been some “shady practices were taking place at the university hospital, particularly those surrounding the purchase of medical drugs.” This is dubbed as the university’s best kept secret. I guess it is still a secret since the article doesn’t go into much detail.

This scandal sheds some light on last year’s tuition hikes that caused a lot of student protests. What the students did know is that they are paying for the corrupt ways of the big shot trustees.

Shame on you AUB!

Side Note: I wrote an article about the tuition hikes last year and everyone was up in arms about how I could criticize AUB. I hope I get some apologetic comments.

Yesterday, the popular Eddeh Sands beach resort hosted the Diamony Lingerie Fashion Show. And just like the annual K-Lynn fashion show held in negative degree weather in the mountain resort town of Faraya, the models are Russian prostitutes.

This baffles me! I thought showing off your ASSets to make other women seethe with jealousy was a national past-time. So, why aren't more Lebanese women participating in these fashion shows?

Beirut Cafe Rips Khalijis Off! Treat the Gulf Tourist with some RESPECT! Tfeh

In 2010, 1.5 million tourists flocked to Lebanon to enjoy the great weather, amazing scenery and buzzing night life (and possibly prostitution and drugs).

A huge chunk of the tourists are those from Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates who come to our country to bask in our relatively liberal atmosphere.

Almost all of our business sectors depend on the influx of tourists. Shopping malls, restaurants and hotels make more money during the summer months than any other season. Our tourism industry is constantly thriving, amounting to 13% of our GDP (or 7 Billion dollars). In short, rich Khalijis fuel our economy.

So it shocks me when I hear that a certain high-end Beirut café charges Khaliji tourists double for food and beverages. Sources close to the café informed me that there are separate menus for affluent Khaliji customers. They recounted a story of a Kuwaiti who was charged 80,000 LL (around 53 dollars) for a cup of tea and bottled water. The customer made a scene and vowed never to enter this café again (which is a very popular Khaliji hang-out).

Even though this might be hear-say, I wouldn’t be surprised of the story was 100% accurate.

SHAME ON YOU LEBANON! It’s bad enough that the taxis constantly rip off tourists, but now the restaurants, too? We should not be biting the hand that feeds us!

Are we so strapped for cash that we resort to thievery to make ends meet? I wonder what the Ministry of Tourism will have to say if this rumor was actually corborated and copies of the menu were to leak out.

I may not agree with their life style or their governments, but when the citizens of the Gulf come to Lebanon, they should be treated with some f---ing respect. Maybe that's why you don't see them around that much anymore.

T-Minus 1 Hour Till Pier 7

T minus 1 hour till the opening of the brand new Pier 7. And I am super psyched!

It's located on the Coastal High Way near City Mall. It took two years to premiere due to what some sources claim were "issues with the municipality."

But, the wait is finally over as 7 opens its doors at 10 pm sharp.

I am usually a bit iffy of clubs opening on the outskirts of Beirut, but from the looks of it, this might be the new sexy trend the Lebanese club-heads are waiting for.

Also, it's under Crystal Management, the geniuses behind Palais Night Club (formally Crystal), Matise and Alacazar.

Unfortunately, Flo-Rida is in town and is performing at Sky Bar (Jounieh). Such a shame these two events were on the same night!

This should be an interesting night, nonetheless.

I Told You This Would Happen! SHAME ON YOU LEBANON AND SAUDI ARABIA!

One of the first BeirutBeauty posts I wrote was about the systematic mistreatment of Asian workers in the Middle East. I discussed the atrocities they endure on a regular basis by their employers like withholding pay, food and legal documentation as well as physical and sexual abuse.

After I described how house maids help us manage our daily lives, I went on to specifically warn that if we continue to treat the workers as modern-day slaves, their employment will be banned by their home countries.

It’s June 2011 and lo and behold that is EXACTLY what happened: The Indonesian government has banned its citizens from seeking employment in Saudi Arabia.

This comes after Royati binti Sapubi, a house maid, was beheaded by a sword in the kingdom after she confessed to killing her employer (a woman by the name Khairiya bint Hamid Mijlid) with a meat cleaver.

The Indonesian president called the beheading illegal and against international laws, not to mention that her execution was only made public after the fact.

Naturally, the Indonesian government had no other choice but to ban its citizens from seeking employment in Saudi Arabia, a country that has almost one million Indonesian migrant workers (2004 statistic). They also recalled their Ambassador as a sign of protest.

However, when it comes to maid abuse in the Arab world, Saudi Arabia is not alone. All countries, including Lebanon, have seen an increase in maid suicides, attempted suicides and abuse. Sadly, Lebanon ranks the highest in that regard.

I urge all women who employ maids to take action against this violence or they will be forced to, GOD FORBID, raise their own children and clean their own houses! (Unfortunately, I don’t think this would be possible. When abuse against LEBANESE WOMEN themselves is legal, I doubt the migrant workers have any hope at all.)

I also urge Asian countries to take the same steps as Indonesia to BAN ALL MIGRANT WORKERS from the Middle East. No more signing treaties and promising reform, it is time TO END THE HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS!

SHAME ON YOU SAUDI ARABIA AND LEBANON FOR BEING MODERN DAY SLAVE OWNERS! We should be ashamed of ourselves for exploiting and abusing innocent men and women who come here seeking better pay and a better life.

Lebanese Drug Dealers to Police: "Stay Away From Our Cronic!"

If there's one thing we all know and love about Lebanon, it's the increasing production and consumption of cannabis. The illegal trade that has made a lot of people very, very, very rich, not to mention had adverse ramification on Lebanese society (it is a gateway drug after all).

That's why the Lebanese equivalent of the DEA, headed by Col. Adel Mashmoushi, has been working tirelessly to stop the production.

But at 9 am today, the Office of Drug Control (ODC) was met with heavy gun fire as they tried to destroy the fields in eastern city of Baalbek. LBC reported heavy shelling as well, although thankfully no one was hurt.

This comes at an ill-opportune time for drug dealers since the demand for the “whacky tabbacky” skyrockets during Lebanon’s summer touristic season.

St. Georges Hotel to Make a Comeback, Might End Solidere Feud (FINALLY)

Beirut’s infrastructure was severely damaged by the 19-year civil war that ended in 1990. If you visited the city a few years back, you could see the remnants of that war everywhere you looked: from collapsing building with machine gun bullet holes to abandoned tanks on the side of the roads.

But that was then, and after years of hard work, Beirut has finally transformed itself into a bustling metropolitan.

While restaurants, hotels and clubs rush to renovate their locations before the peak tourism months, one hotel has been noticeably absent. And that’s St. Georges Hotel in Ain Mreisseh. It used to be the best in its heyday, accommodating the rich and famous from around the world (singer Um Kholthoum, Actress Elizabeth Taylor, the Shah of Iran, and double-agent Kim Philby).

Although it’s located on one of the most prestigious streets in Beirut, it still looks like a haunted, creepy mansion of the dead. And this dark and aesthetically- displeasing façade has been plaguing Beirut for 15 years.

The reasons behind the stall of renovation are political. In short, it’s the feud between the owner of the hotel, Fady al Khoury, and business- man-turned-assassinated-prime-minister Rafiq Hariri. The battle began when the latter wanted to build a marina in the hotel which will diminish the former’s legal access to the water.

As of today, the battle has raged on with no end in sight; even after Hariri’s assassination on the hotel’s door steps in 2005.

News of the St. Georges making a comeback should be welcomed by all! I believe all the parties involved are holding Beirut’s history hostage if they allow the situation to continue. It’s time to let bygones be bygones and settle this matter once and for all.

Here’s to a speedy reconciliation and a prosperous future for the hotel.

How to Party At Sky Bar: A Complete Idiots Guide

With almost 2,500 people attending the grand opening and with twenty straight minutes of ear shattering fireworks, Sky Bar has finally opened its doors.

Summer after summer, this club has reigned supreme; squashing all competition in the industry.

In the past 2 years alone, the club hosted a slew of top notch performers like Pitbull, Keli$, 50 Cent and the other girl from Destiny’s Child.

All in all, it has lived-up to its reputation as the best specimen of Beirut night-life.

But with such an elevated status, it’s become notorious as the hardest place to get into. Just ask singer/song-writer Sting. According to “Gavin Ford in the Morning”, the artist was REJECTED and was only allowed entry after much persuasion.

Every day of the week (except Mondays), hundreds of people anxiously wait outside hoping the bouncer will acknowledge their desperate yearning to party with the elite. Some arrive three hours early just to score, what seats at the bar (I call it the "early bird clubber"). At one point you needed a four digit password just to get into the place!

Not only are the lines outside the club soul-crushingly long, but getting a decent table proves to be difficult (and costly). Call Sky Bar right now and you will hear the sweet voice of a Sky Bar hostess informing you they are “fully-booked” till the end of the summer.

But don’t be intimidated! If you follow a few simple steps, you will be on your way to enjoying the Sky Bar experience.

Dress the Part: I know some of you have your “personal style” but you should probably leave that at home if you want to get in. If you want to party with the best, unfortunately, you need to start looking like them. For men, I suggest designer shirts, no sneakers and lots of cologne (there’s nothing worse than clubbing BO). For women, High-heels, full-make up and cute dresses. (WARNING: DO NOT WEAR JEANS! Heat Stroke May Ensue!)

Go "Early Bird": As I said before, going a few hours early (around 9 pm) will increase your chances of finding seats on the bar. Be careful though, because as 12 am strikes, you will be cornered into a little area with 50 people around you. Personally, I don’t do bar stools but when life gives you lemons…

Dead Nights: The best nights to party at Sky Bar are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun otherwise. Wednesdays happen to be my favorite because it’s full enough to party but empty enough to walk, breath, talk, move. Also, waaaaay better chances for meeting your future baby daddy/baby mama.

Don’t Be Constipated: There’s nothing worse than Lebanese chicks posing at clubs. You know who I am talking about: the high maintenance, noses in the air, princesses who literally stand around like porcelain centerpieces. Sometimes, you have to poke one in the cheek just to see if she’s alive. But when I got to sky bar, I get down and those are the nights that prove to be most memorable.

The DJ Booth: Standing at the DJ booth or behind the bar is an honor, but trust me…. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Sure there space to walk around and dance but get drunk and you will feel you are on a roller coaster ride gone to hell. I’m not saying I puked all over the railing that overlooks the Mediterranean, but I was pretty damned close.

Mind Your Manners: For some reason everyone is on their best behavior! No one is belligerently drunk, no fights break out and medium to low sexual harassment and/ore inappropriate groping. I feel safe at Sky Bar since it’s well-lit and there are bouncers who look like CIA-trained operatives standing by to disperse any kind of shenanigans.

So there you have it, a few simple rules to party at Sky Bar! Have a Nice Summer and Happy Partying!

BeirutBeauty's "Did You Know This Was Banned in Lebanon?!" Addition

I wrote a post earlier about places, things and people officially banned in Lebanon. And as of today, we can add Lady Gaga to the list since she's the devil.

Her newest album, Born This Way, didn't make it out of Lebanese customs. According to this article, the "cartons of the new release are stacked in police offices" awaiting a decision on whether it will formally be banned.

The main argument here is that her lyrics are offensive to all 17 religious sects in Lebanon, especially the Christians.

This doesn't come as a surprise when, in one of the songs, Lady Gaga sings about her love affair with Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Jesus Christ. (Naturally, this song was taken off the airwaves earlier this week).
The lyrics are quite captivating: Lady Gaga is in love with Judas and will wash his feet with her hair if he wants her to (see image below). He lies to her all the time, but she still in love with him regardless of the fact that he killed the son of God. In the music video for the song, you can see Lady Gaga getting gang banged by Jesus's 12 disciples (who are depicted as red-neck bikers).

Uh Oh.... Palestinians Marching to Israel Borders to Get What's Theirs...

That's right, bitches!

The Palestinians are sick and tired of this shit. And rightfully so! They have been displaced for 63 years, seeking refuge in Syria and Lebanon since 1948.

As I posted earlier, the Lebanese refugee camps are nothing short of a disaster zone. They look like Japan after the tsunami. Palestinians can’t work, have no rights and resort to selling drugs and arms. Worst of all, they can’t be naturalized (i.e. become Lebanese citizens).

The Lebanese government claims that if they do naturalize the Palestinian refugees, their right to go home will be compromised. But that’s a bunch of hooey if you ask me.

The reason why they are stuck in this dire situation is because giving them the citizenship will tip the sectarian balance and no one wants that!

So on Sunday, peaceful protesters are going to the borders.

Will they succeed in getting back their land? Not really.

Will they be shot down by Lebanese and Israeli military? Most likely.

Here’s to you, Palestinians, go out there and get what's yours girlfriends!

Syrian Refugees Jailed in Lebanon, Being Deported Back to Syria

How many refugees does Lebanon need to harbor before we decide that the government doesn’t have the means or the know-how to support influx of asylum seekers?

I don’t want to get into the human rights violations that occur but let’s just say it ain’t pretty. and it hadn't been pretty for a looooooong time.

These are just a few pictures of how they live. As Human Rights Watch put, "they either die in their country or rot here."

And now that the Syrians have finally awoken form years of oppression, 5,000 Syrian families crossed the border since March after the regime’s crackdown on protesters.

Instead of granting them some form of security, the Lebanese government is detaining refugees in jails. Human Rights Watch reported the refugees are being sent back!

To make matters worse, the UNHCR (High Commission for Refugees) has gotten involved.

They are “working closely with the ministry and with the Higher Relief Committee to see that the needs of the displaced population can be met.”

How much you want to bet that they CAN’T be met? No offense to the UN but they should stick to helping the refugees they already promised to take care of.

On a more positive note, the Lebanese people in the bordering towns have welcomed the Syrians with open arms.

I wonder how welcoming they’d be once the refugees start asking for some rights.

Bottom line: if you need to come to Lebanon to spend cash, live the life and goof off all day, we’d be more than happy to assist you. If you’re escaping a tyrant regime, then try Turkey.

The Syrians are Coming!

The Statue of Liberty has the following inscription: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

In Lebanon, it's: Give us your refugees after years of illegally occupying their land, give us your poor who have been invaded for their oil reserves and give us your huddled masses who’ve been killed because they want the tyrannical regime out.

Lebanon is the home of 400,000 Palestinian refugees. The evacuated here in large numbers after Israel declared its independence in 1948 and later when Israel won the 6 Day War in 1967.

They live in camps, they can’t work, and they have no rights. They are so poor they resort to selling drugs and arms to make end’s meat.

Some of us in Lebanon have been trying to get them some rights, but of course if we give them Lebanese rights, their right to go home will simply disappear. And if you give them a citizenship, then we would have lots more Sunnis than any other sect. This would tip the balance in the Sunnis favor and God only knows what havoc that will bring.

Lebanon is the home of 50,000 Iraqi refugees since the American invasion in 2002.

They have no rights, they can’t work, and they have a fear of being arbitrarily arrested. As Human Rights Watch described it, they can either “rot here or die there”. No other choices are present at the moment.

Lebanon is the home of 5,000 Syrian refugees from nearby towns as of March 2011. They are mostly women, children, and injured protesters.

I don’t know their current status, but I doubt they can go home any time soon.

One question remains: How are we going to provide for more refugees when the government can’t even provide for the Lebanese people, let alone the “huddled masses”?

As of March 2011, The Syrians are being killed by their own government (not the first time in their history).

Estimates now show that about 1,000 people have been killed and hundreds more arrested (almost the same amount of Lebanese who died here in 2006).

A small minority of protesters are armed.

These are the same people that I saw with my own eyes vote with their BLOOD for Bashar al Assad after his father passed away (Yes, on the ballot cards, you could see people stamp with their own blood!)

The Syrian's are notorious for their brainwashed, distorted vision of how their government operates. And even though they are being killed, they still have no problem supporting the regime.

WTF is that all about?!

Who Will Pay For Finding Rafic Hariri’s Killers?

In November 2010, Sayyed Hassan Nasralla vowed to “cut off the hand” of anyone who adheres to the rulings by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), which blames key members of Hezbollah for Hariri’s assassination in 2005.

The media had a field day with Nasralla’s comments. They repeatedly played the same sound bite over and over in efforts to portray him as a blood-thirsty savage. The depiction of Hezbollah as a backward Muslim militant group that still practices hand-cutting as a form of punishment was echoed by the Arab world’s media outlets.

But his vows were far from literal: He wasn’t going to cut off the hands of those who try to indict his group; he’s simply going to cut off the funding of those who try to indict his group.

And that’s exactly what is happening now.

According to the UN, Lebanon’s Ministry of Finance has yet to pay the hefty sum of the STL’s budget, which amounts to about 32 Million dollars. If they continue to ignore their payment obligations for 2011, the UN will be forced to put sanctions on the country. What that means for the Lebanese is yet to be discussed by either end of the political spectrum.

The general argument by the Hezbollah- led government is that the world is a better place without the court indictments. And that the STL is an American agenda in favor of Israel. And that all judgments coming out of the court are unfounded.

While I am a proud supporter of Hariri’s government and while I relish the idea of punishing those responsible for his father’s death, I can’t help but question the STL’s rulings.

I am not a fan of political flip-flopping and it seems as though the STL is picking names out of a hat.

First, they blamed four top military Lebanese commanders, who were released from jail after evidence of their involvement did not surface. This was during the court’s hay day when everyone in Lebanon was searching for “The Truth” and the Cedar Revolution was fresh on people’s minds.

Then they blamed the Syrians, who were kicked out of Lebanon after their thirty year military presence under the pretence that they “did it” (No evidence surfaced about that, either.)

Then they blamed Iran for being Iran.

And now they are finally settled on Hezbollah.

The current government is not impressed by this and therefore further “contributions” towards the budget will be not approved, according to the newly appointed PM Najib Mikati.

The question now remains: has the time come for the Lebanese people to bid the STL adieu? I predict yes.

But don’t worry Hariri supporters! There is still a glimmer of hope. As always, Saudi Arabia is willing to lend a helping hand. According to sources, they will pay 10 million dollars to salvage whatever dignity this court has left. And as of this morning, Canada will also pay. Who will foot the bill for the rest of the money for the next three years hasn’t been determined.

Side Note: Call me naïve, but when the STL opened its doors in March 2009, I erroneously thought the Hariri dynasty was paying out of pocket. Seeing that they are richest family in Lebanon, with Hariri’s daughter the youngest billionaire on the Forbes’ rich list, I can’t help but feel as though the money is being siphoned from the already stagnant Lebanese economy. I wouldn’t mind paying if I knew it was a serious court, but now… I am reconsidering. Am I wrong, or is 32 million chump change for the Hariris’? If they want to see the killers brought to justice, maybe they should pool their money and pay it off themselves.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I haven’t posted anything in a while. And that’s because I spent the better half of 2011 planning for………..wait for it………. my ENGAGEMENT PARTY!

That’s right, bitches! I am Fiancé-d!

Yes, someone has actually managed to vow his undying love for me in front of all my close friends and family.

Whether he’s a complete idiot or a mad genius is still TBD (to be determined).

I would post some pictures of the event, but my sexiness would simply blind you.

As you know, I have a full-time job as an accountant and I am also a freelance writer on the side, so planning this party has been a real pain in the ass.

I spent weeks running around Beirut trying to find the best (and the cheapest) photographer, DJ and decorator. And that’s not easy, seeing that every engagement/wedding business will use any means necessary to rob you blind (you really don’t want to know how much a bushel of Norwegian hydrangeas cost.)

But that’s over now and I am back in action!
