I topped them with hemp hearts, strawberries, vegan chocolate granola clusters, and blue vanilla cashew butter from Elavi.

Mind Sky: Zen Teaching on Living and Dying- Jakusho Kwong

In a collection of talks and anecdotes, Jakusho Kwong-roshi, a Dharma successor of Shunryu Suzuki-roshi, presents his approach to Buddhist teaching. Containing photos of Kwong-roshi with his teachers, as well as a selection of his vibrant calligraphy, Mind Sky explores the profound beauty of Zen history and practice, nature, and the philosophy of the ancient Zen master Eihei Dōgen. With an elegant simplicity, Kwong-roshi shows how Zen is experiential rather than intellectual. And with persistent practice, realization is already yours.

The Honeys- Ryan La Sala

Mars's genderfluidity means he's often excluded from the traditions — and expectations — of his politically-connected family. This includes attendance at the prestigious Aspen Conservancy Summer Academy where his sister poured so much of her time. But with his grief still fresh, he insists on attending in her place.

What Mars finds is a bucolic fairytale not meant for him. Folksy charm and sun-drenched festivities camouflage old-fashioned gender roles and a toxic preparatory rigor. Mars seeks out his sister's old friends: a group of girls dubbed the Honeys, named for the beehives they maintain behind their cabin. They are beautiful and terrifying — and Mars is certain they're connected to Caroline's death.

But the longer he stays at Aspen, the more the sweet mountain breezes give way to hints of decay. Mars’s memories begin to falter, bleached beneath the relentless summer sun. Something is hunting him in broad daylight, toying with his mind. If Mars can't find it soon, it will eat him alive.

Dead Dead Girls- Nekesa Afia

Harlem, 1926. Young Black women like Louise Lloyd are ending up dead.

Following a harrowing kidnapping ordeal when she was in her teens, Louise is doing everything she can to maintain a normal life. She’s succeeding, too. She spends her days working at Maggie’s Café and her nights at the Zodiac, Harlem’s hottest speakeasy. Louise’s friends, especially her girlfriend, Rosa Maria Moreno, might say she’s running from her past and the notoriety that still stalks her, but don’t tell her that.

When a girl turns up dead in front of the café, Louise is forced to confront something she’s been trying to ignore—two other local Black girls have been murdered in the past few weeks. After an altercation with a police officer gets her arrested, Louise is given an ultimatum: She can either help solve the case or wind up in a jail cell. Louise has no choice but to investigate and soon finds herself toe-to-toe with a murderous mastermind hell-bent on taking more lives, maybe even her own….

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous- Ocean Vuong

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is as much about the power of telling one’s own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard.

Favorite Short Films

2023-07-30T09:00:00.057-07:00

I spend a lot of time on YouTube watching short films from around the world. I love seeing what people create.

War of Colors- many ways, Rue is a typical young woman. Smart, hard-working and attractive, she's a writer, she comes from a loving home and family, and she has a crush on her co-worker at her restaurant job. But Rue also has albinism, which makes life harder for her sometimes. She's not quite accepted by the Black community: to some, she's not Black enough, she's too white or she's just a "freak." And the white community treats her as Black. People stare at her on the bus. Her co-worker thinks she looks weird. Even in an inclusive creative community, she feels excluded. With such obstacles, Rue must find her voice, as well as her sense of acceptance.

Finley- Alexandra (Brooke Wallace), her boyfriend Chris (Keith Dowsett), and her friend Jennifer (Alexa Leigh Fletcher) are three college students who move in together. After finding the titular ventriloquist dummy, they learn to coexist with it as it tries unsuccessfully to off them, one by one. Humiliated by his lack of prowess in the killer doll department, Finley exiles himself back into his attic crate. When violent intruders target the house, though, Finley gets a chance at redemption.

The Kármán Line- Golden Globe winner Olivia Colman portrays a mother who is suddenly hit by a rare condition that sees her lift off the ground at a slow but ever-increasing rate, her husband and daughter struggle to cope.

One Last Order (Hanyang University Korean Short Film)- Jongin starts receiving anonymous poems from someone in the cafe he goes to every day. In order to find out which one of the baristas is his secret admirer, he has to observe, analyze and confront each one of them.

Lucky Fish- In the bathroom, Maggie encounters Celine who leads her into a room with a fish tank - a dreamy, almost-forgotten world where anything seems possible. In the midst of making awkward conversation and stealing glances at each other, Maggie and Celine find reasons to be slightly less miserable at dinner.

Updated Skin Care Routine

2023-07-29T09:00:00.049-07:00

It's been a while since I have posted products I use on my face. Due to getting older and finding products that are zero waste, I needed to find a products that balanced these things out.

Youth to the People- "We work every day to make the best, most sustainable choices for YTTP and the world. We choose glass for our bottles and jars to help reduce the quantity of plastic waste created by the beauty industry, and choose post-consumer materials whenever possible."

Glow Recipe- "Glow Recipe has partnered with so you can recycle Glow Recipe metal and plastic products and packaging for free. Request a free shipping envelope with a prepaid shipping label, send in your trash, and we'll recycle it. Enrollment limits apply."

FORAH- “A raw, natural and powerful sunscreen & skincare brand born by vast mountains, rich temperate rainforests and expanses of rugged land bound by deep, sometimes unruly seas.”

OSEA- "At OSEA, we’ve always been guided by the belief that sustainability is our only future. That’s why when we launched our business back in the 90s, we chose to package in glass and prioritize naturally-derived ingredients and sustainable packaging materials. In 2020, we took it one step further by becoming a Climate Neutral certified and Ocean Positive verified brand."
