Zemun and New Belgrade are cities within a city with their own strong identity and many stories tied in to it. We will first pass through New Belgrade, a socialist vision of a perfect city.

An interesting mixture of politics and architecture that went through a number of different phases, for which many do have a love and hate feelings.

The biggest communist palace built in these areas will be the first stop, the Palace of Serbia, then we will take a detour to see the curious example of brutalist architecture, the Genex tower, and then we’ ll be riding down to the river and reach Zemun afterwards.

We might climb onto Millennial Tower at Gardoš to enjoy the views overlooking the river and the city, or just stay by the river to feed the swans. On our way back a quick stop in the Zemun park that used to be the border cross between the Turkish and the Austrian Empire, so there will be some insightful thingies to hear about that time.

Back to the river again, and an easy ride to the bridge, a great place to see the Fortress of Kalemegdan from the other side of the river. Tour finishes in Savamala District. It takes about 3 hours to do this tour and time will certainly fly.

About The House

The house was built in 1896, designed by famous architect Milan Kapetanović, who studied in Munich. The house is built in the style of late renaissance and academism. The façade and the sides were painted by Italian painter and decorator Domenico d’ Andrea, and it is a rare, almost unique case in Belgrade. The house is built as a free-standing city villa with four façades. There is a great garden behind the house. There were salons and dining rooms at the ground floor of the building, and bedrooms, offices, library and a big gallery facing the garden on the first floor. House-bridge between ages, was the house of many important persons of Serbian history and culture.

Jevrem Grujić

Jevrem Grujić is a memorable Serbian statesman, politician, diplomat, memoir author and the author of The Law of The National Assembly and The Serbian Kingdom. He is one of the first students that studied at the famous University of Sorbonne in Paris- known as a „Parisian“. After he returned to Serbia, he had a great political and diplomatic career. He was the Minister of Internal Affairs, Minister of Justice, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the highlight of his career was the St. Andrew Assembly, of which Jevrem was general secretary. It was his merit that the Law of The Serbian Baronies was put to vote and return to the throne of our Great Prince Miloš Obrenović was decided. Jevrem Grujić was the founder of the Liberal Party. A man of principle and steadfast, he was the idol and the leader of the Serbian Youth. He was the step-brother of Svetozar Miletić.

He married Jelena Herbez, daughter of Jelenka Herbez „The Little Lady“ and Teodor Herbez, minister of finance of the Serbian Baronie. They had ten children and very long and happy marriage.

Today’s descendants come from their oldest daughter Stana. Jevrem Grujić left a big trace in Serbian history and culture. He wrote several books, of which the most important are his memoires, and his ethnographic writings, the first in Serbia. It is not until now that Jevrem Grujić got his place in Serbian history.

Queen Natalija portrait

A beautiful Romanian princess Natalija Keško (Florence, 1859 – Paris, 1941) married prince Milan Obrenović, later king of Serbia, so she became the first Serbian queen after the Middle ages. She was one of the most beautiful women of her time, but the most important is that she loved Serbia and made a lot of great acts to it. She was the ideal model for painters, so Steva Todorović did several portraits of her. Stevan and Stana Ćurčić, very good friends of the royal couple, ordered this portrait from the artist, and Steva Todorović, the genius, added softly painted tulle veil. She radiates with all her beauty, elegance and attitude. Deprived from pride, she is still superior. At the big exhibition of portraits by Steva Todorović in Belgrade in the 60s, this portrait was voted the most beautiful one. The portrait was considered the Serbian Mona Lisa for a reason. It is now shown to the public for the first time, so the visitors can enjoy the beauty of both the painting and the queen.

The wedding dress of Jelena Grujić

The wedding dress is made out of silk, silver and gold threads, and is considered the oldest preserved wedding dress in Serbia. It originates from 1856. The wedding dress took two years to be made, and was restored spectacularly, for every thread had to be restored on its own. Its style astonishes the viewer.

The chest

Master-piece of French art object design can be seen on fantastic chest made of gilt bronze and crystals that contain service for liquor. It is a gift from King Milan Obrenović and Queen Natalija Obrenović to Stana, daughter of Jevrem Grujić, and her husband Stevan Ćurčić for their wedding in 1878. The chest attracts everyone’s attention with its beauty and elegance.

Set for liqueur, gilded bronze an crystal. Wedding gift to Stana and Stevan Ćurčić, from Queen Natalija Obrenović and King Milan Obrenović, 1878. Belgrade
