As I take a half-time break for a couple of weeks, I'd like to repost the 14 Empowering Personal and Cultural Principles I first published at the start of 2024. In 2020, Rod Dreher released his book, Live Not by Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents, which warned Christians of the growing “soft authoritarianism” of the United States. At the time of the book’s release, the United States was still in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, with churches only slowly being allowed to reopen in certain states for in-person worship. Now, five years later, the book is being turned into a documentary. The documentary, released by Angel Studios, focuses on interviews with people who lived through totalitarian regimes and compares their experiences to the growing secular culture of the United States. Dreher recently spoke about the project to The Christian Post, noting that while his contribution to the project had been “fairly minimal,” he was impressed by director Isaiah Smallman’s “somewhat different” approach. Some of the differences Dreher noted were that while his book is more “methodical,” Smallman leans more into the emotional side of the issue. “That's not to say that he doesn't fill it with facts,” noted Dreher. “It's really more of a style matter.” Dreher then addressed the issue of book banning and whether or not allowing certain materials in public libraries is similar to communist book banning of the past. That would seem to be the Hollywood credo given how the industry took the most efficient, profitable and free-est news and entertainment content delivery system ever developed and, out of combination of greed and hubris, smashed it into a confusing and expensive mish-mash of channels that consumers are expected to pay for individually just because they possibly have a show or two that they might be interested in checking out. The new media order. which began less than 20 years ago when Netflix launched its streaming business in 2007, is already showing signs of cracking up as consumers have realized that paying for programming that was once available for free is not a good deal - especially when so much of the new programming is so often dark, uninspiring and hostile to their faith and patriotic values, particularly when compared to the old-style broadcast shows. Over the past week or so, the four major broadcast networks released their fall schedules to far less fanfare than in the old days when they were perceived as the big leagues rather than a dying breed. A recent study is finding that people with near-death experiences (NDEs) have different ways of viewing their careers after their experience. According to research published in the Journal of Management, Spirituality, and Religion, people with NDEs move away from the grind of the everyday 9 to 5 and seek more meaningful work. Researchers interviewed 14 survivors (9 women and 5 men) who had an NDE, typically due to a medical incident or an accident. Researchers found that participants no longer felt drawn by the calls of financial achievement and moving up the corporate ladder. The participants worked in various fields, including waiting tables and farming, entrepreneurs, office jobs, marketing, and teaching. A common theme of the participants was a desire to do meaningful work. “I was not interested in doing nonsense... I just was not gonna waste my time on nonsense,” said one participant. Another participant described it like changing a character in a play. “I like to say that when I woke up in that hospital bed, I had a knowing that the character I was playing was no longer working for me and I had to change characters, and changing that character meant changing that job.” Most participants responded to their newfound insight by changing jobs completely, some even leaving behind high-paying jobs for ones that suited their passions more. The poll was balanced for denomination, age, race, party affiliation, and income and maintained a margin of error of ± three. The survey found that 76 percent of Evangelical Christians opposed cuts to foreign aid. Those opposed worried that cuts could lead to greater Christian persecution abroad or that preventable deaths would increase. Last week, hundreds of Christians gathered on Capitol Hill for a Bible Reading Marathon. The entire Bible was read aloud for 90 consecutive hours without commentary or interpretation. The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon was established in 1990 by Dr. John Hash and Dr. Corinthia Boone. In 1994, Pastor Michael Hall and his wife, Terry, took over as organizers of the event. The Halls held to the vision of the Bible Reading Marathon for 26 years before handing it over to Keith Davidson, the founder of Seedline International, in 2019. Along with Capitol Hill, Seedline International organizes Bible Reading Marathons outside 7 other state capitols in Indiana, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. They found a record-setting 41% approval rating, the lowest for any elected U.S. leader since the Eisenhower Administration. The number is a national average based on a swath of Americans of various ages, cultures, faiths, and political persuasions. However, one group stands alone in supporting Trump—only one. White Evangelicals far surpass the national average of those who believe in progress from the current administration.
