Seek Out Nature in Times of Disaster

Whether flood, fire or other disaster enters your life, seeking out nature can be a tremendous comfort. I speak from experience, as I recently endured a house fire and had to relocate.

Nothing can prepare you for the upheaval that comes with having to leave your home and the "creature comforts" provided by the plants, birds and other wildlife of your residence, not to mention the added stress of dealing with insurance companies and contractors. Taking time to re-establish your link to nature, no matter where you might find yourself, can give you some sense of normalcy.

In my case, I was able to rescue some of my houseplants and relocated some of my bird feeders to my temporary housing. Tending to my plants has been very therapeutic and having some of my favorite feathered friends visiting my new home helped with the transition.

Our new location overlooking the Fox River also afforded me the opportunity to watch the territorial disputes of the resident Sandhill Cranes, Canadian Geese and Mute Swans as they battled on a small stretch of land for their nesting sites. Taking walks with my dogs and exploring the flora and fauna of my new neighborhood has brought a sense of peace and solace as well.

During a particularly trying week, I got in the car and drove to the shores of Lake Michigan and spent some quiet time on the beach. The soothing sound of the waves and the antics of the gulls along the shoreline was just what the doctor ordered.

Despite numerous setbacks in the reconstruction process, I anxiously await the day when I can return to my carefully tended habitat, refill my feeders and enjoy the sunsets over the Tichigan Marsh again. In the meantime, I try to remind myself to stop each day and enjoy the beautiful sunrises over the Fox River in my current home and seek the peace of mind that comes with making a connection with nature.

Finding Peace of Mind in a Restless World

Are you as tired as I am of the constant stream of politically-driven social media posts by friends and family? With so much negativity going around, no wonder everyone feels so helpless this election season.

Despite the uncertainty in our world, there is one thing I know for sure. Regardless of who wins the election, the leaves will still fall, and the birds will continue to migrate south. It is the never-ending cycle of this beautiful world, but we often forget to take the time to stop, observe and (most importantly) appreciate it!

Nature as Therapy
Instead of being consumed with social media, radio or television, try spending a few "quality" moments each day exploring nature. This simple form of meditation will put you in a positive frame of mind and provides a wonderful vantage point from which to view the blessings in your life.

Here are some great ideas to get you started:

Find a local nature trail and take a long, leisurely hike

Take a drive along a scenic back road and observe the brilliant colors of the trees

Sit outside on your deck or patio. Close your eyes and take in the smell of autumn leaves, while listening for the sounds of migrating birds

Get in a canoe or kayak and paddle a quiet river

Fill your bird feeders or add a suet feeder to your backyard and sit and watch the activity

Kayaking the Tichigan State Wildlife Area

Challenge yourself each day to look around you and be grateful. Take the time to find something beautiful to "share" with friends and family on social media.

You will be amazed at how quickly it will lift your spirits and make you realize what a wonderful planet we live on!

Migration Magic

While Perry Como may declare December "the most wonderful time of the year", the annual spring bird migration holds the exact same "magic" as Christmas morning did as a child.

I have often declared to friends and family that my idea of heaven would be the 1st week of May in Southeastern Wisconsin. The newly emerged foliage on the trees and shrubs glows a brilliant green, and the flowering crabapples and lilacs are in full, fragrant bloom.

This glorious time also heralds the return of my favorite migrating birds. I get a little giddy when I hear, but haven't yet caught a glimpse of a Baltimore Oriole. If my oranges aren't already out, I have been known to hop in the car and make a mad dash to the local grocery store to pick up a bag.

Equally as exciting is the first Ruby-throated hummingbird to visit my feeders. Yes, a 52-year old empty nester can still get as excited as a toddler seeing Santa Claus when the hummingbirds arrive!

It happens all at once, and it is a joyous sensory overload. In addition to the orioles and hummingbirds, the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Indigo Buntings come through at the same time.

I make sure that my feeders are filled (finch, hummingbird and mixed seed) and sit back in awe as the American Goldfinch, Indigo Bunting and Northern Cardinal create a surreal living version of the primary color wheel. This marvelous display against the backdrop of brilliant, bright green, it is a feast for the eyes, as well as the ears.

I listen closely for any unfamiliar bird song, as it often belongs to a mystery wood warbler or Scarlet Tanager tucked into the woodlot behind our property. In order to capture these rare visitors, I make sure that my field guide and camera are always at the ready. All of the photos in this blog post are images captured in those magical moments of early May!

Nothing is quite as exciting as having a rare bird species visit your backyard. As I write this blog post, I am torn between continuing to type or investigate the "new" bird song I am hearing just outside the patio door.

It is most likely a wood warbler of some type, and they often only give me a brief opportunity to enjoy their company as they move further north to their nesting grounds.

Finding Your Passion

As a young girl in middle school, I remember the terror that was speech class. I wasn't overly shy by any means, but the prospect of standing in front of the class and talking always put me in a panic. Never in a million years could I have pictured myself decades later as a wild bird speaker/presenter.

I guess I have to give some credit to my 10-year stint in a tv newsroom for easing my fears of public speaking. I was often tapped as an "extra" for news promos, and being around extroverted personalities certainly helped me gain confidence. I eventually realized that something was missing and left the newsroom to pursue my love of art and nature. I picked up a paint brush after many years and became an accomplished watercolor artist, specializing in bird and botanical paintings. I even had some of my bird illustrations published alongside those of John James Audubon in the book "Wings of Mercy". That was a personal highlight for me!

Unfortunately, we all know the plight of the "starving artist". Eventually financial constraints forced me to seek additional employment, which I happily found working in the lawn and garden industry. I worked for another decade as a sales representative, specializing in wild bird feeders and garden products.

Having enjoyed feeding the birds all the way back to my newsroom days, I eventually became quite knowlegeable in backyard birding...even offering to do presentations for some of my garden center customers. The first couple of times I stood before a group of people, I had butterflies in my stomach. Before long, my passion for birds overwhelmed my fears, and I was ready to fly!

I began to realize that I had knowledge that could help others become more successful in attracting birds, but more importantly, I had found my passion. Each time I finished a presentation, I felt a rush of energy and accomplishment that I got no where else, and a self-proclaimed "bird nerd" was born. I have done presentations at local home and garden shows, garden centers, garden clubs and recently led a garden walk at the The Boerner Botanical Gardens in Hales Corners, WI.

In Pursuit of the Pileated

I have been actively feeding wild birds for most of my adult life. Living adjacent to the Tichigan Wildlife Area in Southeastern Wisconsin, I have enjoyed regular visits from all the resident woodpeckers, including several seasons with nesting Red-Headed Woodpeckers in my yard. Despite my successes, it is the largest of the woodpeckers, the Pileated, that continued to elude me.

Note: The Ivory-billed Woodpecker and the Imperial Woodpecker are/were larger than the Pileated. Both species were believed to have gone extinct in the 20th century. However, recent sightings of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker in Arkansas and other remote swamp regions in the southern US indicate that a small breeding population may still exist of this magnificent species.

While my yard boasts plenty of mature oaks and other hardwood trees, the surrounding area simply does not include the 150-200 acres of forest territory that the Pileated requires. However, my 5-acre camp in Florence County, Wisconsin does have a large forest area adjacent to 75 acres of State-owned land and in close proximity to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The perfect habitat for Pileated Woodpeckers, our property hosts many dead trees displaying their woodcarving handiwork. Their raucous call/laugh is often heard while we are up there, and we often catch a glimpse of them flying from tree to tree. Unfortunately, keeping bird feeders both full and out of the hands of hungry bears when you are only up for a long weekend is next to impossible.

This year, I found myself with the entire month of January off. While not my first choice for making an extended visit, I knew that it would afford me the opportunity to place feeders (while the bears are sleeping) and make some observations of the hardy year-round bird population, including the Pileated Woodpecker.

Armed with two suet feeders and cakes, I was able to attract both Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers the first few days, as well as both White-Breasted and Red-Breasted Nuthatches. It was comical watching a particularly feisty female Downy take on a much larger male Hairy Woodpecker on a regular basis.

By the second week, I still had not seen or heard the Pileated, despite the fact that a tree right outside my bedroom window looked to have been freshly excavated.

I was enjoying my quiet time in the woods, and became accustomed to the daily routine of the Black-capped Chickadees, woodpeckers, Blue Jays and occasional visits from an American Goldfinch and a small flock of Common Redpolls.

I had planned for different scenarios I might encounter while alone in a cabin with no running water. I had gas in the snowmobile, plenty of firewood and mace in case I encountered wolves while walking my dogs. I did not, however, prepare for serious illness. What started as a sore throat, soon developed into an abscess on the tonsil, and I found myself hospitalized in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. My winter retreat was to be cut short by about a week, and I was disappointed that I had not accomplished what I had set out to do.

While resting in my hospital bed the morning before I was to head home, my husband called from the cabin to say that a Pileated Woodpecker had been hanging around the property. Great! I couldn't believe that after almost two weeks, the cruel irony of my being in the hospital, with my camera back at the cabin was too much. But I got lucky!

Sometimes in life the good things are just worth waiting for, and this beautiful female Pileated Woodpecker did make a magnificent appearance the next morning, as we packed up my things to head back home. My Little Chickadees

I have been actively feeding wild birds for well over a quarter of a century, and one of my perennial favorites is the delightful Black-capped Chickadee. These year-round Wisconsin residents are one of seven chickadee species in North America.

Easily attracted to feeders with a variety of seeds and suets, the Black-capped Chickadee's quick movements often make them a tough target to shoot with a camera. The photo taken here is one of very few images I have of a Black-capped Chickadee that isn't just a blur of feathers.

Getting chickadees to utilize a nesting box takes a minimum of effort. A box with a 1-1/8" hole is large enough for chickadees, yet small enough to keep out the more aggressive House Sparrow. I have had the opportunity to witness the raising of several clutches of chickadees in the nesting box located right on my back deck. The amount of energy exerted by both of the parents in feeding their hungry nestlings is truly entertaining, and I am often exhausted just watching them. The number of insects that can be consumed in just a few minutes of observation is simply amazing.

Every season here in Southeastern Wisconsin I am guaranteed to see and hear these pint-sized favorites. In most cases, chickadees mate for life, with the male chickadee starting his breeding calls as early as mid January, as they start exploring nesting sites early. This sweet sound is very welcome during the cold, silent months of winter. Black-capped Chickadee Calls

Not only are these birds well suited for surviving harsh winters, but recent studies have shown that chickadees in northern climates actually have the ability to grow more brain cells during the cold months. This added brain power allows chickadees to find the stash of seeds they stored away prior to the beginning of winter. Chickadee brains in winter

Serving Up Suet

Variety is the spice of life, and it should always be considered when feeding wild birds as well. In addition to traditional feeds like black oil sunflower, safflower, nyjer seed and quality mixes, suet can add a whole new dimension to your birding experience.

Suet is inexpensive to provide, and will bring a variety of birds that you may not be attracting with other feeders, including:

woodpeckers
nuthatches
wrens
warblers
creepers

Traditionally, suet is the fat from the kidneys and loins of beef. It can be offered raw, but is safe to use only when temperatures are cooler. In recent years, manufacturers have created rendered suet recipes that prevent melting and make it safe to use all year long in many climates.

That is where the variety comes into play. In addition to blends that offer a mix of seeds, there are suet mixes available that include a variety of different nuts, berries, citrus and even insects to attract more species of birds. The Pine Warbler (above) was a welcome surprise to my suet feeder and allowed me the opportunity to observe a bird that normally would not come near a traditional feeding station.

Like me, if you have a yard full of squirrels where a suet cake will last only a few days, try offering suet that is mixed with hot pepper. Unlike mammals, birds do not have the taste receptors to detect the capsaicin in peppers that makes them hot. The birds will love it, while squirrels and other mammalian pests will leave it alone.

Having issues with starlings at your suet feeder? Then switch to a feeder that has a "roof" over the top. Starlings do not like to feed upside down, and therefore, will be discouraged from a feeder that allows access only at the bottom.

Want to attract some of the larger species of woodpeckers? Then look for a suet feeder that has a tail prop to help support them while feeding. There are several varieties on the market that are environmentally friendly and made from 100% recycled plastic (below right), as well as sustainable bamboo.

Want to blend in with your environment? Why not offer suet in the form of a log feeder (left). This provides the most natural setting for woodpeckers and other birds that routinely feed off of insects on dead or dying trees.

Manufacturers now offer suet to custom fit these log feeders in a variety of mixtures, including "hot pepper".

If you are not already offering suet, you need to do so today! Not only will it bring more birds, but will provide them with needed nutrition throughout the winter months.

Snowbirds are on the Move

No, not the mass migration of retirees to Florida, Arizona and other warm climates. I'm referring to the adorable member of the sparrow family known as the Dark-eyed Junco. They are also affectionately called Snowbirds by many due to their "reappearance" each fall just before the first flurries fly.

Juncos breed in the coniferous forests across Canada, in the western and eastern United States and in the Appalachian Mountain area. Here in Southeastern Wisconsin, they head north in the spring, with the promise to return in late September and October.

There are multiple subspecies of juncos with different color variations throughout their range. However, the adults in this part of the country are easily identified by the following:

dark slate-colored head and chest
white belly
pale "pinkish" bill

Juncos prefer to forage on the ground looking for dropped seeds. I have had a great deal of success attracting juncos to the area around my fly-thru feeder mounted to my deck. The junco (at left) was photographed resting during a snowstorm just inches from the feeder and deck.

Scattering seed on the ground or in a low dish or ground feeder is a great way to lure them in. Juncos are fond of cracked corn and white proso millet, as well as black oil sunflower. However, in order to discourage nuisance birds and sparrows, I fill my feeder with just Golden Safflower seed, and I have plenty of visitors.

How Sweet the Sound

I love that technology has given us many options to listen to music on demand. Most of the time you will find me listening to my favorite artists on Pandora at home or in my car. However, there are certain times of the year (Early Spring and Summer) that I enjoy unplugging my devices and simply listen to the sound of the birds.

Early May is when I listen carefully for one of my favorites...the distinct song of the Baltimore Oriole. Not only does this song signal the official start of Spring for me here in Southeastern Wisconsin, but it also reminds me that it is time to fill my hummingbird feeder, as well as set out the oranges for the orioles.

As the season progresses, it is the incessant trill of the House Wren that fills the the days of late May and early June. The raucous sound of the Blue Jay often warns of intruders in the yard, and the song of the male Northern Cardinal (when whistled back) will often bring them closer to inspect the new rival to their territory.

Listening for the first song in the pre-dawn hours often takes the edge off of insomnia. It is relaxing to see which bird's song will emerge first each morning and how quickly others follow suit.

Take advantage of this opportunity to immerse yourself in a symphony of song that has been perfected over the ages. The months of Summer will be over before you know it, and the birds will become less vocal. Taking time in the morning or early evening to relax with a cup of coffee or glass of wine and take in the intoxicating sounds of nature is one of my favorite "guilty pleasures".

Attracting Northern Cardinals

Perhaps the most beloved of backyard birds in North America, the Northern Cardinal is quite easy to attract to your feeding stations.

Their seed of choice is black oil sunflower seed, and they prefer feeding from either a platform, fly-thru or hopper-style feeder. Cardinals are not comfortable feeding from the narrow perches of most mixed-seed tube feeders. However, some bird feeder manufacturers have started making more "cardinal perches" for their tube feeders. Click here for information on bird feeder styles.

If you experience troublesome squirrels in your neighborhood, you may want to substitute safflower seed for sunflower seed. Cardinals really enjoy this white seed, but the squirrels are not as fond of it. In fact, I use just safflower seed in my open fly-thru feeder, and the cardinals flock to it all year long.

Other unwanted visitors to your feeders may include "non-native" House Sparrows and European Starlings. Both of these birds arrive in large flocks and may discourage cardinals from approaching your feeders. I have managed to eliminate both of them from my yard by making sure I do not provide "cheap" bird seed that includes filler seed and cracked corn. Using sunflower or safflower alone will help to eliminate these pests.

Also, don't forget to provide a fresh water source. The beautiful male cardinal (above) is enjoying a drink at the heated bird bath that I provide throughout the winter months.

Adopt the Pace of Nature...Her Secret is Patience - Ralph Waldo Emerson

This week signals the start of the always hectic and often stressful holiday season. It is also the perfect time to put into practice the wise words of poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. This is perhaps my favorite quote, and one that I often have to force myself to follow each day.

As I write this blog entry, the snow is blowing outside with almost zero visibility. I made a special point of running my errands earlier in the morning and now can relax and enjoy the show!

Whether it is sitting back and watching the snow or watching the birds and deer outside, taking a few minutes each day to relax our pace can be restorative to the body, mind and soul. It is no secret that taking a walk in nature is regarded as a cure for depression. Whether you live in the Sunshine State or the Frozen Tundra, nature is always right outside your door and accessible each and every day.

Patience can truly be a virtue this time of year, especially when vying for that coveted parking space while shopping. Don't set yourself up for disappointment by trying to do everything on your list. If something doesn't get done, it will not result in the end of the world. If the weather is a bit "frightful", simply sit back with a cup of tea or a good glass of wine and take it in. The malls will still be there when the rain or snow comes to an end.

Fall and Winter Bird Feeding Tips

As predicted, Winter is making an early appearance this year. You can prepare now to help see your feathered friends through the upcoming season. Here are some of my favorite Fall/Winter feeding tips to help you get the maximum enjoyment from your bird feeding efforts:

SUET - Suet is a great way to give your birds a little boost during the cold weather months. This is a favorite food source for woodpeckers, and Fall\Winter is an ideal time to put out a suet feeder to attract them. In periods of intense cold, look for “high-energy” suets.

SEED – When selecting a seed blend, remember that you get what you pay for. A quality mix of seed will have a high concentration of black oil sunflower, which is a favorite of most birds. Inexpensive blends are mostly filler (white millet and red milo). These seeds are kicked out of the feeders and attract undesirable birds like English Sparrows and Starlings.

FRUITS & NUTS – Dried fruits and nuts will attract a large variety of species and supplement their winter diet. Look for quality bird mixes and suet cakes, which include fruits and nuts. Nuts are a favorite for attracting both woodpeckers and nuthatches.

SQUIRREL ISSUES - If you are experiencing trouble with squirrels, try offering safflower seed. It is a favorite of cardinals, chickadees and nuthatches, but squirrels avoid it. If you don’t want to use safflower, try a “Squirrel-Proof” feeder or add a pole or squirrel baffle. The extra investment will more than make up for itself in seed savings!

WATER - Along with making sure that your birds have plenty of seed for the winter, you might want to think about getting a heated birdbath. Water is vital to all living creatures, as well as birds. During extended sub-zero weather, there is often no open water to be found and providing it will make your backyard very desirable. My heated birdbath was a very popular spot last season, and it was visited regularly by all my favorites, including the Cardinal (right) who enjoyed a drink of water at minus 13 degrees below zero!

TREES, SHRUBS AND PERENNIALS - Fall is a great time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials. Select varieties that can provide birds with fruits, nuts and seeds. Last year, I witnessed two American Robins making a meal out of the berries from my Red Cedar tree (left) during a particularly chilly visit by the "Polar Vortex".

NESTING BOXES – It’s never too early to prepare. Place your nesting boxes in the Fall, and you won’t be too late for any “Early Birds” that show up next Spring. Nesting boxes can also provide a shelter for birds against the elements.

SHELTER - Make sure that the placement of your feeders is within close proximity to trees and/or shrubs for shelter. Not only do the birds need protection from the snow and cold, but from predators like raptors and feral cats.

Farewell Little Friends

One of my favorite days of the year has always been the arrival of the first Ruby-Throated Hummingbird each Spring. It is something I look forward to after enduring the long midwestern Winter.

Today I enjoyed watching what I believe to be a group of young siblings taking turns at the feeder and buzzing around chasing each other throughout the day. I can't remember when I have been so entertained by so many juvenile hummingbirds, and it is confirmation of a successful breeding season here in Waterford, WI. Farewell my little friends...I look forward to seeing you next Spring!

I've talked about it before, but this post will re-emphasize the importance of having a good camera handy to help you with identifying bird species.

When a new visitor arrives in your backyard, they don't always stop and pose for pictures like this Downy Woodpecker did for me on this snowy, windy morning. He was more concerned about staying warm, than watching me take numerous pictures from the patio window.

Unfortunately, we don't always have the luxury of snapping dozens of pictures in order to get a few good ones. Just getting some shots of those distinguishing details can help you zero in on identifying your new visitor quickly. It can save you plenty of frustration when you go to consult your field guide. Having a photo to quickly download and reference is much better than relying on just your memory. And we all know how the mind can play tricks on us!

I received a new Canon PowerShot SX510 HS digital camera from my family for Christmas, and I cannot wait to try it out during the warbler migration this Spring. It has a 30X Optical Zoom which allows me to get close up pictures with amazing detail. It also is a reasonably-priced camera, but it is making a big difference in the enjoyment of my backyard birding.

I am especially looking forward to the Spring migration this year. We usually get a nice variety of warblers coming through, and they are often in my yard for a brief time. Take into account that they are also very "skittish" and stay on the edge of the woods, and it can be difficult to get a good photo. I am hopeful that even a "fleeting" shot will enable me to zoom in and get the necessary details I need for proper identification. Who knows, I may even get lucky and get that "money shot"!

Providing for Birds in Polar Temps

The Winter of 2014 has been brutal thus far, as we've all become acquainted with the relatively unknown term "Polar Vortex". For those of us in the upper Midwest, we've not seen these temperatures in decades, so its safe to assume neither have the backyard birds.

I have previously posted on the importance of remembering the birds in Winter, but this season of record temps requires taking extreme measures. Keeping your feeders filled and providing high-energy sources of food like suets will help birds struggling to survive in the subzero temperatures.

The photos featured on this post were taken at 3:00 pm in the afternoon on a frigid day that started at minus -20 and warmed to only -11. The temps were so cold that local schools were closed for two days in a row. As schools prepared in advance, so did I. The heater on my previous birdbath had given out, so I purchased a new one and made sure that my fly-thru feeder was filled with seed, and that I had a high-energy suet cake available.

As I check the forecast for the upcoming week, we are expecting yet another Polar Vortex, with more double digital subzero temps. It looks like I'll be adding more water to the birdbath today, as well as re-supplying my bird seed and suet. I am also fortunate to have a row of lilac bushes adjacent to my feeder and birdbath to provide shelter for feeding birds. For those of you with exposed feeders in the middle of your yard, a discarded Christmas tree or brush pile can be added to provide necessary shelter.

While we can only dream about Spring at this point in time, we should do everything we can to ensure that our backyard birds will survive to enjoy it as well!

Hang in there...it won't be too long before the snow is gone and we hear the glorious sounds of bird song again!

Beating the Blues with Bluebirds

For many of us in the Upper Midwest, warm weather and sunny skies have eluded us this Spring.

I recently had the opportunity to get a respite from the depressing weather during a five-day trip to Arkansas to help my parents move into a new home. The weather was beautiful, and the redbuds and dogwoods were in bloom. What really boosted my mood, was the fact that their property already had two residents in the form of a pair of Eastern Bluebirds.

As an avid bird feeder and enthusiast, I have always envied those individuals fortunate enough to lure these beauties into their yards. My wooded lot attracts many wonderful and rare species, but unfortunately bluebirds have remained on my "wish list".

Fortunately for my parents, the previous owner of their home had a properly sized and placed bluebird nesting box. It was wonderful to wake to the sound of their beautiful song and watch as they carefully tended their nest and fought off intruding squirrels. I gave my parents information on the number of broods to expect in Arkansas, where bluebirds are a year-round resident, and when they could safely clean the nesting boxes.

Back home in Wisconsin, I have returned to cold, gloomy days with the knowledge that Spring is indeed just a few states south and a few weeks away.

Sometimes it takes a brief change of scenery to break out of our funk and cure the blues. I had not anticipated how much two tiny blue birds could improve my state of mind.

This is one of my favorite quotes, and this extended Winter season of 2013 has truly tried my patience.

The photos shown at the left were both take on March 20th. Believe it or not, the one on the far left is from 2012. The photo on the right from 2013. For those of us who monitor birds and plants each Spring, this contrast has been nothing less than absolutely confounding!

Living here just off Tichigan Lake in Southeastern Wisconsin, we had questioned whether or not the ice was ever going to melt. This weekend, it finally happened. According to another local resident, this is the latest Spring he can remember in almost 40 years. Coming on the heels of 2012's extremely early Spring, the contrast is significant. This time last year my garden was lush with newly emerged hosta, daffodils, tulips, Virginia Bluebells and Bleeding Hearts. This year, the only thing blooming are the snowdrops, and the crocus are struggling to break the surface. I'm also embarrassed to admit I was just able to pull out my Christmas spotlights this weekend, as the ground had been frozen for that long. There was no January, February or even March thaw this year.

It has been a very long Winter to say the least, but the payoff came this weekend with the annual iceout. While the number of migrating loons we experienced last year was next to none, this year's first glimpse of open water brought them in by the dozens. In fact, the number of unusual migratory waterfowl this past week has been exceptional. In addition to the many loons, there have been a significant number of buffleheads, mergansers and other varied species.

I guess when Mother Nature decides to take her time in bringing forth Spring, she also provides us with an abundance of beauty. I am hopeful that as Spring slowly emerges, the numbers of other Spring migrants, including warblers, orioles and hummingbirds, etc., will be as spectacular as the waterfowl display.

It was this time last year that I was following the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird migration maps and anticipated that my local birds would be arriving earlier than usual. While there were many hummingbirds that did indeed arrive ahead of schedule in various areas...my hummingbirds and orioles arrived like clockwork during the first week of May, as they always do.

I guess what I take away from this unusual contrast in seasons is that nature does indeed have her own pace. Perhaps rather than stressing out over it, we would all do well to accept it and make every attempt to adopt it.

In Anticipation of Spring

Monitoring Migration

Winter is still maintaining its grip in this part of the country, but there is plenty to do in anticipation of the arrival of Spring. One of my favorite websites to check out this time of year is Journey North. It is a wonderful resource for following the migration of American Robins, Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds, Common Loons, Bald Eagles, Monarch Butterflies, as well as other species by utilizing a network of student and citizen scientists to log sightings.

Having advance notice of the arrival of some of your favorite birds will allow you ample opportunity to place nesting boxes, nesting materials and feeders at the appropriate times. One of the main reasons that backyard birders are unsuccessful in attracting hummingbirds is because they often place the nectar feeder out too early or too late. Following the updates and maps provided on Journey North will ensure your timing is right! Having appropriately sized nesting boxes and nesting materials available around your backyard will enhance your chances of securing breeding pairs for the season.

Start Planting

If you are like me, you can't wait to get your hands in the dirt after the long winter months. Now is a great time to go down to your local garden center and plan your bird garden. Pick up a seed starter kit and plant up some bird favorites. If you are located in Southeastern Wisconsin, Burlington Garden Center is a wonderful source for seeds and knowlegeable staff to get you started!

Here are a few bird-approved perennials you can start from seed:

Purple Coneflower

- Aster

- Coreopsis

- Echinacea (Coneflower)

- Leucanthemum (Shasta Daisy)

- Rudbeckia - (Black-eyed Susan)

In no time at all, the warm weather will be here, and you will (hopefully) have some great starter plants ready to put into the ground in your backyard.

Important Reminder: Don't forget to take some time and properly clean out your existing bird feeders. We often neglect them in the Winter, and a dirty feeder containing mold, mildew and debris is much less attractive to migrating birds.

Getting Ready for Winter

While this photo may seem extreme, it is a reminder that those cold, blustery days are right around the corner. Just about the same time that you turn your bird baths upside down for the season, you should be thinking about a fresh water alternative for your Winter birds!

You don't want to wait until it is 20 degrees or colder to drag out your heated birdbath. Get it set up and ready to go as the temperatures dip below freezing at night. Having an accessible water source is extremely important for wild birds, especially in the northern climates. Even though we are surrounded by water here on our peninsula, the marsh and lake will soon be frozen, and it will be difficult for birds to get the open water they need.

Once you get your Winter birdbath set up, don't forget to keep your feeders filled. Like anything else, it is easier and much more enjoyable to be outside when the temperatures are warm. However, the birds have fewer natural food resources in the winter, so it is important to maintain your feeders...especially during severe cold snaps.

The platform feeder above is mounted on my deck, and is within a few steps of my patio door. Even when the snow piles up, I can easily maneuver my way to deposit fresh seed. If you are not already offering suet at your feeding stations, Winter is a great time to do so. Suet provides "high-energy" nutrition at a critical time of year.

I enjoy feeding the birds year round. However, there is something about sitting with a cup of coffee on a cold, snowy day and watching the birds that gives me a real sense of comfort.

Looking for Loons

Today I caught a glimpse of five Common Loons as they made a migration stop on Tichigan Lake. While the conditions were not conducive for taking a good photograph, I recognized their unmistakable profiles despite their Fall plumage. See photo (left) courtesy of Cornell Lab of Ornithology

These icons of the Northwoods are easy to ignore this time of year because they have lost their distinguished black and white markings and taken on a less dramatic appearance. However, careful observation of their shape and graceful swimming style will quickly help make a positive identification.

Have you ever wondered where these "snowbirds" go to spend their winter months? You may be surprised to learn that like many of us, they choose to hang out along the warm coastal waters of the United States. If you are planning a trip to a warmer oceanside location this winter, keep an eye out for loons. Despite the fact that they do not put on a vocal performance like they do during the breeding months, there is still something mesmerizing about viewing these elegant creatures as they move through the water.

Send Squirrels Packing with Safflower

I don't have to tell anyone who regularly feeds the birds what a challenge it can be dealing with squirrels. The constant battle to keep these critters from emptying your bird feeders can drive almost any bird enthusiast insane.

Fortunately, I have discovered that I can turn almost any type of bird feeder into a squirrel-proof feeder by simply providing safflower seed, as opposed to offering black oil sunflower or a bird seed mix.

Safflower is known as one of man's earliest crops, and has had various culinary, cosmetic and medicinal uses throughout history. In recent years, it has gained favor among individuals who enjoy backyard bird feeding. While being a favorite meal among "desirable" birds, including cardinals, chickadees, grosbeaks and nuthatches, squirrels do not particularly care for its taste.

If you have a favorite feeder that has become a victim of regular squirrel raids, try replacing what you are currently feeding your birds with "straight" safflower. I have done this in all the feeders in my yard that are not currently squirrel proof. They are frequented regularly by my favorite birds, while the neighborhood squirrels pay them no attention at all.

In addition to being a deterrent to marauding squirrels, the bright white seed also adds a nice aesthetic touch when filled in a decorative feeder. Safflower can take the place of any seed you are currently using in a fly-through, hopper or tube feeder.

Give it a try and pick up a bag of safflower the next time you need fresh bird seed. It will save you money in the long run and might just become your "new" favorite as well!

Missed Opportunities

Cedar Waxwing

I would like to take credit for this awesome photo of a beautiful Cedar Waxwing, but unfortunately I cannot.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of having a flock of Cedar Waxwings converge on my yard and crowd the birdbath on my deck. I knew immediately what was happening, as I saw the telltale signs of a waxwing flock. My cedar tree was filled with birds, and the limbs were moving as if the tree were actually "alive". I peered out the window onto my deck and saw a half dozen waxwings enjoying my birdbath.

What's wrong with this scenario? After realizing that I had a wonderful opportunity to capture some great photos, I discovered that both batteries for my Olympus camera were dead! I couldn't get a single shot off. By the time I loaded a battery into the charger, and had it sufficiently charged...the Cedar Waxwing flock had moved on.

I advocate that bird watchers should always have a camera handy should that elusive "bird" moment arrive. I guess I need to remind birders to also make sure you have fully charged batteries in "said" camera.

While I missed what was most likely a "once-in-a-season" opportunity, I have learned a very important lesson.

Wild Birds as Therapy

Sometimes life throws us an unexpected curve ball. Whether you find yourself facing a sudden job loss, serious illness or the death of a loved one, making time for the birds can be an unexpected source of comfort.

When you are feeling as though your world as been turned upside down, establishing a connection with nature during troubling times can keep you grounded. There are numerous studies to support the fact that viewing and/or feeding wild birds can provide calming health benefits as well. Simply taking a few minutes each day to fill your feeders and/or to identify different bird songs is quite therapeutic.

If you haven't already started the "addicting" habit of birding, it's not too late to start. Sharing your hobby with those who may benefit from it is a wonderful way of giving comfort in their time of need. There are plenty of inexpensive feeder options that can provide for maximum success and enjoyment. Most independent lawn and garden centers have staff on hand that can create a "starter kit" to give as a gift. They can help you determine what type of feeder/bird seed is most appropriate for their location and can also assist you with any bird guides for their area. If a bird feeder is not desired, the garden center can also suggest a birdbath or flowers, trees and shrubs suitable for attracting birds.

Sharing the gift of birding, while beneficial to the human recipient, also helps provide for our feather friends as well!

The Heat is On

Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

The heat is on, and it is the perfect time to remind bird lovers that they need to maintain their hummingbird feeders. When the temperatures rise up above the 80 degree mark, the nectar in feeders can quickly go bad. When it gets this hot, I recommend cleaning and refilling feeders every 3-5 days, especially if they are hanging in an area with full sunlight.

If you don't have time to get to the store and purchase the powdered or pre-mixed nectar, you can make your own at home with sugar and water. I use a 4:1 ratio of water/sugar:

I boil the water first in the microwave, then add the sugar until it dissolves. I let it cool a bit on the counter then add it to an empty 1/2 gallon milk jug. This will stay fresh in your refrigerator for up to two weeks.

It is not necessary to have red coloring in the nectar as shown at left, especially if there is enough red visible on the feeder itself.

Keeping their feeders clean and filled with fresh nectar will ensure that your hummingbirds hang around throughout the "Dog Days of Summer".

Water for Birds

Fountain Water Source

As the summer temps continue to rise, it is vital that we provide a source of water for the feathered friends we have managed to lure into our yard.

There are any number of ways to make water available, including the simple bamboo fountain shown here. I took a beautiful glazed ceramic pot and attached it with clear silicone to the matching dish. This solved the issue of closing the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. I had purchased the bamboo spout (with pump) a few years ago at a local garden center. I filled it with a few rocks, and it was ready to go. Not only do the birds love it, but it provides a nice source of water for my two dogs and cat.

The sound of gently-flowing water is irresistible to both birds and other wildlife. However, I don't limit myself to just one fountain. In fact, I have an additional six (yes six) birdbaths located throughout my yard. Not only do they provide a needed drink and/or bath for birds frequenting my bird feeders, but it is often visited by those "elusive" woodland species who prefer to dine on fruits and insects. Placing a water source close to the edge of a wooded area is a great way to see a variety of species, including wood warblers.

Re-purposed Birdbath

Don't be afraid to get a little creative...this birdbath (left) was a favorite last season for my robins and blue jays to bathe in. It was made from a combination of repurposed items (old glass light fixture shade and iron candlestick). If you are not particularly creative, your local garden center will have a variety of birdbaths and/or fountains for you to choose from.

Don't forget to keep them clean and filled with fresh water. You can also treat your birdbaths and fountains with special "safe" enzymes to keep the water clear and fresh!

If you don't have to the time or money to spend endlessly filling bird feeders with seed or you don't care for the mess...try placing a few birdbaths in your yard today!
