For as long as I can remember, I’ve felt different, but I never really understood why. I’ve always struggled with working full time — I get so exhausted that I can’t do things after work like other people can. While others go out for after-work drinks, I just need to go home and rest.

I can pick up on how people are feeling, and strong smells or bright lights really get to me. I’ve never been able to wear perfume or drink coffee, and even some clothes feel uncomfortable. When I found out about the concept of being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), suddenly my whole life made sense. I finally understood myself and stopped pushing to be like everyone else.

A Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) is someone whose nervous system processes sensory input more deeply, making them highly aware of subtle stimuli — and this constant over-awareness leaves them exhausted by the end of the day.

What Is a Highly Sensitive Person?

The term Highly Sensitive Person was first introduced by psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron in the 1990s. It describes a personality trait called Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS), which is innate and present in around 20–30% of the population. It’s not a disorder or diagnosis but a neutral temperament trait that affects how people process sensory information and emotional stimuli.

Interestingly, this trait isn’t unique to humans — it’s been found in over 100 animal species, from dogs and cats to primates, birds, and even fish. Biologists believe it’s an evolutionary survival strategy: some individuals are more observant and cautious, processing their environment deeply before acting. This gives them an advantage in certain situations where awareness and reflection can mean the difference between safety and danger.

The Science Behind Sensitivity

Research shows that HSP brains are wired differently. Functional MRI studies have found that people with high Sensory Processing Sensitivity display increased activation in areas of the brain involved in awareness, empathy, and emotional regulation. This explains why HSPs are more aware of subtleties, reflect deeply on experiences, and are often profoundly affected by their surroundings.

Because of this deep processing, HSPs experience something called differential susceptibility. This means that sensitive individuals are more affected by both positive and negative environments. In nurturing, supportive conditions, they tend to thrive — often outperforming others academically, creatively, or emotionally. But in stressful or critical environments, they may struggle more with anxiety, self-doubt, or overstimulation.

When I took the original HSP test developed by Dr. Aron, I scored 100%. It confirmed what I had always suspected: I’m a textbook example of a Highly Sensitive Person.

The Four Core Traits: D.O.E.S.

Elaine Aron’s research outlines four defining features of high sensitivity, captured in the acronym D.O.E.S.:

D – Depth of Processing:
HSPs think deeply about everything — from the meaning of life to subtle decisions. We reflect before acting, often leading to careful, thoughtful choices.

O – Overstimulation:
Because we process more information at once, our nervous systems can become overwhelmed by noise, crowds, or pressure. This can lead to fatigue or burnout if we don’t build in rest time.

E – Emotional Responsiveness and Empathy:

The Gifts of Being Highly Sensitive

The sensitivity that can feel overwhelming at times is also what brings many of the HSP’s greatest strengths. Research and personal experience both show that HSPs often possess:

Creativity: Many artists, writers, and innovators are HSPs. The deep-processing mind naturally seeks meaning and expression.
Empathy: A strong ability to sense and understand others’ emotions fosters compassion and connection.
Attention to detail: HSPs are attuned to subtleties, which makes them meticulous and observant.
Rich inner life: HSPs experience emotions, thoughts, and imagination vividly and deeply.

Because of differential susceptibility, sensitive people also gain more benefit than average from positive environments. Supportive relationships, therapy, or mentoring can have a transformative impact, allowing HSPs to “rocket ahead” once they’re in conditions that nurture them.

The Challenges: Overstimulation and Fatigue

The cost of these gifts is that deep processing can lead to overstimulation. Every sound, sight, emotion, and thought adds to the mental load, and eventually, the brain needs to “shut down” and recover — much like an overheated computer.

Overstimulation occurs whenever an HSP has been “on” for too long without rest. For me, that might look like needing to retreat into silence after a social gathering, feeling fatigued after a day working in the office or just going out to the mall.

Learning to manage this is crucial. I do this by scheduling rest time after busy days.

HSP vs. Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)

A common misconception is that Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS) — the scientific term for high sensitivity — is the same as Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). They’re not.

SPS (HSP) is a neutral genetic trait, not a condition or diagnosis. It involves deeper processing of sensory and emotional input but in an organised, big-picture way.

SPD, on the other hand, is a neurological disorder that causes disorganised or inaccurate sensory processing, leading to inappropriate or distressing responses.

In short: all HSPs can experience overstimulation, but not all overstimulation comes from SPD.

HSPs typically benefit from understanding their trait and adapting their environment — not from medical intervention. Learning about SPS, practicing self-care, and creating balance (through rest, creativity, and supportive environments) are the most effective ways to thrive.

Sensitivity Across Cultures

Sensitivity is valued differently depending on the culture. In societies that prize toughness or extroversion, HSPs are often misunderstood or told to “stop being so sensitive.” This can lead to low self-esteem and the false belief that something is “wrong” with being sensitive.

The “Orchid” Type

When I completed the formal sensitivity assessment, my score placed me in the high-sensitivity group, also known as the “Orchids.” About 30% of adults fall into this category.

Orchid individuals are deeply influenced by their environments — they flourish under care and wilt under stress. The metaphor fits perfectly: orchids require specific conditions to thrive, but when nurtured, they produce extraordinary beauty and resilience.

For me, this means I can be more easily unsettled by conflict, criticism, or pressure. But in positive, supportive settings — surrounded by encouragement, creativity, and calm — I flourish.

I’m pretty much the textbook definition of a Highly Sensitive Person—I checked every box on the self-test. Discovering what that meant was a total game-changer for me. I finally understood why those early baby years had felt like I was barely surviving—while my friends seemed to cruise through with ease. The sleepless nights, the overstimulation, the constant needs—I was truly struggling and didn’t have the words for it at the time.

Now that I do, I’ve built a way of life that honors my sensitivity and my son’s needs. Is it always easy? Not at all. But there are ways to make it more manageable—and even joyful.

Here’s what’s helping me survive and even thrive as a highly sensitive single parent.

1. Stick to a Simple, Consistent Routine

As HSPs, unpredictability can be overwhelming. A structured routine creates calm—for both you and your child. When my son and I know what to expect, it lowers anxiety and overstimulation.

One of the best things I’ve ever done is create a set routine for evenings. No matter what’s going on—school holidays, busy weeks, meltdowns—we stick to it. It creates calm and predictability for both my son and I.

Here’s what our evenings look like:

Fourth great grandfather

Patrick Duffy was born in Sligo, Ireland in 1786. He worked as a labourer until 1805 when he enlisted in the British Army 3rd Regiment of Foot (known as the Buffs). At the time of his enlistment in Sligo, for “unlimited service”, he was aged 19 and, at six feet, he was unusually tall, towering over most of his peers.

During service, Private Duffy travelled to many countries across Europe and saw action numerous times. In 1810, during leave back in Sligo, he married a local girl, Bridget Conlan.

After his marriage Patrick returned to his regiment and fought in the Peninsula War, in Spain, where he was wounded in the left thigh by a musket ball in May 1811. In that fierce battle he was described as a brave soldier.

Duffy recovered and by 1814, he had been promoted to corporal and was fighting in the closing stages of the Peninsula War, in the south-east of France. He was wounded again by a musket ball, this time in the right thigh. Patrick had his wife with him during this campaign, as was common at the time, and Bridget helped nurse him during his recovery.

In July 1822, Patrick Duffy (36), who had been promoted to the rank of sergeant, departed Kent, England, on the convict transport ship, Eliza, bound for Sydney with 160 prisoners. Sergeant Duffy’s wife Bridget (34) and their three sons also travelled with him on the Eliza.

Patrick Duffy was a diligent soldier and when he arrived in the colony he became a district constable at Barren Ridges, Field of Mars (near modern day Ryde). He also spent time serving in regiments at both Liverpool and Hobart. In July 1828, he was appointed to the important role of “Superintendent of the convict barracks at Parramatta.”

In February 1830, at the age of 44, Duffy retired. He was on a military pension of 1 shilling and ten pence daily, the rate for a sergeant. At that time Duffy successfully applied to Governor Darling for a land grant and was given 100 acres in “South Colah”, in modern day Thornleigh and Westleigh. There he began to cultivate the land and construct a residence for his family.

The retired soldier divided his land amongst his children (ultimately 4 sons & 3 daughters) and he called his own property INGLEWOOD, named after a place in his native Ireland. He also formed a roadway which he named Duffy’s Lane, this went on to become Duffy Avenue and is one of the district’s oldest roads.

Patrick and Bridget Duffy were devoted Catholics and died just two months apart in 1854. They are buried together in St Patrick’s Cemetery, North Parramatta. By giving his children each a portion of his land, it ensured they stayed in the area and many of their descendants are still living locally in the Hornsby district.

The eldest son William Duffy (b. 1811 - 1885), was born in Portugal when his father was serving there. Together with his brother Peter, they helped clear his father’s land sold the valuable timber and established orchards. William continued to live on the portion of the family property that was given to him, and he became a sawyer. In 1833, he married Margaret Stanton who was just thirteen years old at the time. Together they had four sons and two daughters. When Margaret died, William married a second time to Catherine Bartlett, and they had two daughters together.

Peter Joseph Duffy (b.1814 - 1878), was born in England. He also became a sawyer and initially worked a portion of the family’s land. In 1857 he received a grant of 100 acres in an area that would later be named after him, Duffys Forest. He built a road down to Cowan Creek, where he constructed a stone and timber wharf. Using these facilities Duffy and his associates of Duffy and Mitchell, Timber Dealers (based at Market Street Wharf in Sydney), removed timber from his land and transported it via barge along Cowan Creek and on to Sydney.

John Duffy - my third great grandfather

John Duffy (b. 1817 – 1894) was born at sea, off the coast of France. He established and managed an orchard on the family land. He later went off to the Ophir diggings during the Gold Rush period, before returning to orcharding at Thornleigh. He married Charlotte Scott, in 1840, when she was 16, and together they had 10 sons and 6 daughters. Charlotte was the half-sister to William Pollard, who married her husband’s, youngest sister, Mary Duffy. John and Charlotte raised their family in “Rose Cottage” which was situated on the north side of Duffy Lane. John Duffy was a highly respected and great contributor to the Thornleigh community over many years and helped deliver facilities such as the local cricket club, the public school and the Thornleigh School of Arts building.

Ester Duffy (b. 1823 - 1841) lived with the family at Thornleigh and died at eighteen years of age.
Patrick and Bridget Duffy’s fourth son, Patrick Michael Duffy (b. 1825 - 1897) was born in Hobart. He became an orange orchardist at Thornleigh and married Agnes Gogerly (1835 – 1919) of Dural. Together they had 12 sons and a daughter and stayed in the Thornleigh district. There Patrick Duffy Junior died at his residence on Duffy’s Lane.

Elizabeth Duffy (b. 1828 - 1880) married John Stanton in 1846. Stanton was the younger brother of William Duffy’s wife. They farmed a portion of the Thornleigh land on the original grant given to Elizabeth’s father. The Stantons raised a large family of 12 sons and 3 daughters.

The youngest Duffy child, Mary (b.1830 - 1864), married a local man, William Pollard and they established an orchard on the Duffy’s land at Thornleigh. The couple did not have any children and Mary died in 1864, aged just 34. William continued on the Thornleigh orchard and remarried and had two daughters and three sons with his second wife. Many of Pollard’s descendants also still live in the local district.

My second great grandfather John Duffy was the mayor (then called president) and served in the first Warringhah shire council from 1906, he was re-elected in 1908, 1911, 1914 and 1917 his photo resides on the walls of the Warringah shire council building today. He married Sarah Martha Horn at Waterloo in 1894. John and Sarah had a son John Fredrick who served in WWI and a daughter Elvy Margaret Duffy (my great grandmother) (1896-1981).

Perhaps was spelt Wilhem or Wilhelm when in Germany. When William Louis Ebradt Horn was born in 1833, his father, Charles, was 18 and his mother, Agnes, was 18 in Stetten, Germany. He immigrated to Sydney in 1858 (age 25) as a master mariner, and married at age 32 to Martha Cheetham on 4 December 1865 in Sydney. They had 12 children in 21 years (from ages 33 to 55). Hi wife Martha died at age 46 when their youngest daughter was 3. William died on 6 October 1907 in Waterloo, New South Wales, at the age of 74, and was buried in New South Wales.

Petrol Station, Dee Why

My grandfather and grandmother owned the petrol station at approximately 22 Fisher Road Dee Why in the 1960s and 1970s(?). My father Stephen Wilson worked there for a short time after he met my mother. At the same time my grandmother also ran a seamstress business from home sewing underwear. My grandfather was then the manager of Life line for many years in his senior years.

Duffys Forest is named after Patrick Duffy, who received a land grant there in 1857. He became a timber cutter and cleared a road through the bush to Cowan Creek, where he built a stone wharf for transporting timber. The wharf is still known as Duffys Wharf and the road is Duffys Track.[2]

Narcissism and Facebook

In Self-presentation 2.0: Narcissism and self-esteem on Facebook, Mehdizadeh (2010) looks at the social problem of narcissism and how offline narcissism correlates to Facebook activity in the online world. Narcissism includes ‘grandiosity, need for admiration … an exaggerated sense of self-importance … and positive self-views of agentic traits, including intelligence, physical attractiveness, and power’ (Mehdizah 2010, p.358). Narcissists don’t look for warmth or personal intimacy but seek relationships to appear popular and successful, they also seek attractive, high status individuals as romantic partners. They pursue relationships solely for the opportunity of public glory. (Campbell 1999 in Mehdizadeh 2010, p. 358).

Mehdizadeh (2010) was interested in completing the study between Facebook and narcissism firstly because the site is a haven for emotionally disconnected communication and superficial relationships, which is a common trait to narcissists.
Secondly, real life identity has a number of constraints which makes it difficult for people to hide who they really are, such as physical attributes (attractiveness, gender), social status and backgrounds, in contrast, highly controlled environments like Facebook allow users to display their ideal identities, as they have complete power of self presentation.
Lastly, published peer reviewed research on the affect of social networking sites and identity and behaviour is very scarce.

To explore this social problem Mehdizadeh (2010) recruited 100 Facebook users (50 male, 50 female) and coded their Facebook pages for activity. The participants also filled out a questionnaire with the following sections: demographic information, Facebook activity, self-esteem and narcissism. (Mehdizadeh 2010).

Mehdizadeh (2010) found that students who rated high in narcissism were more inclined to present themselves in a self-enhancing manner on Facebook. The narcissists had a higher level of activity on the site and did more self-promoting in several areas. Additional tests were also conducted to see if there were differences between gender of narcissists and the types of self-promotional each gender favoured. Male narcissists were found to use more descriptive self-promotion to highlight their wit or intelligence in the ‘about me’ section. Where as female narcissists indulged in more superficial self-promotion such as sharing revealing photos of themselves. This shows that gender roles have influenced narcissists and their behaviour on Facebook. (Mehdizadeh 2010).

My first munny creation

A couple of friends were ordering some DIY toys to muck around with from kidrobot, so I thought i'd give it a go to try and get myself back into a bit of painting, I must admit it was a bit of a challenge painting on a 3d surface, don’t look too close but he’s not exactly symmetrical for this reason – Think I still prefer a 2d canvas!

I’m not totally happy with the way it turned out, I was hoping for something “cute” but it didn’t really turn out that way. I think my initial sketch was a bit cuter (shown below) but alas, I changed it. My only other point about the kidrobot DIY toys is that they all seem so masculine, I mean I painted mine pink and it still looks like a boy.. How is that? I also ordered a little raffy.. so maybe I will succeed in making “her” female. All in all it felt good to be painting again, forgot how therapeutic it is.

Introversion and Facebook use

In the article The relationship between unwillingness-to-communicate and students’ Facebook use Sheldon wanted to produce some knowledge on the social problem concerning people who are unwilling to communicate in face-to-face interpersonal communication and who view this type of communication as unrewarding. Sheldon hypothesized that people who are unwilling-to-communicate orally would be more likely to communicate through the social media site, Facebook.

Past research has demonstrated that Internet users who steer clear of socialising face-to-face chose the Internet as another way of fulfilling their interpersonal needs, and that alienation, introversion and trepidation when it comes to communicating led to higher use and reliance on communication through the Internet. However, there has been very little investigation done on the characteristics of people who use Facebook. Studying online networking and relationships is important because today’s generation spend so much time online compared to previous generations yet little is known about electronic relationships and how they relate to different personality types. Sheldon (2008) also saw this as an opportunity to test existing theories of interpersonal relationships in a virtual environment.

To find out about this social problem, Sheldon (2008) coordinated a survey with 172 students who completed a questionnaire on their Facebook use. Sheldon (2008, p. 70) states: ‘The survey measured: Basic demographics; Unwillingness-to-communicate; Gratifications of Facebook use: entertainment, escape, passing time, coolness, relationship maintenance, social interaction, virtual community, companionship; Facebook use: the amount of use, duration of use, the number of Facebook friends, the number of people never met in person, the frequency of logging into one’s account, satisfaction with Facebook.’

In the study, Sheldon (2008) found that people who get anxious and who fear face-to-face communication use Facebook more, however they have less Facebook friends than other respondents and they post and communicate on the site less. The study also found that the individuals who are experiencing online relationships are those who are communicating in real life as well, not the contrary. It is thought that introverts communicate online less often (but are online more) and the Internet primarily benefits extroverted individuals, as they use as an extension of their interpersonal communication. ‘There is no evidence that people who were unwilling-to-communicate offline would develop more relationships online’ (Sheldon 2008, p.74).

A monetary based society is not sustainable

Capitalism has forced us to live in a monetary or profit based society, which puts great pressure on sustainability. A sustainable practice or company would take the health of future resources in consideration. This means they would consider longevity, durability and environmental issues. This idea is not only reserved for the material world but it also applies to society as a whole, including thoughts, beliefs and human conduct.

A company might use inferior materials and use modes of production that produce a disproportionate amount of waste because there is no reward for being sustainable in a capitalist society today. The fundamental part of this system is regeneration and competition. Profit always comes first and foremost because otherwise the company would not survive, to a certain extent profit is based on increasing income and decreasing costs.

In the modern world each human is required to gain income by serving a corporation or client so that they can purchase life necessities. In some cases this perpetuates a different type of waste, the waste of the human mind and human life causing workers to feel alienated by having no real purpose in life. Many feel as though they are wasting their lives on mindless jobs trying to make enough money just to survive from one day to the next.

Things have become more productive when more mechanisation has been introduced to labor, therefore, repetitive monotonous jobs like working at a train station, waiting tables and fixing cars are negligent to be wasting our lives on when modern mechanisation could be easily applied to so many industries such as these.

It is time for social change, it is time for society to be updated to present day knowledge, by not using methods based on monetary gain but by realigning practices and processes to take into consideration the carrying capacity of the earth with the goal of social sustainability.

With a new sustainable economy a new incentive system would be developed to create a new social cohesion and integration for the human race, people could aspire to new goals in life surrounding self fulfillment, learning and being creative in ways that interest them. People would no longer be directed towards the goal of wealth, which would put an end to shortage, protect our environment and alleviate the suffering of our financially poor human beings.

Iceland is the best country to live in if you're a woman

Strip clubs are out. Parental leave is in. The glass ceiling has been shattered.

Vigdís Finnbogadóttir became Iceland's president and the first democratically elected female head of state in the world, in 1980.

They just appointed Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir as prime minister - the first openly gay pm in the world who married her long time partner in June. [Same sex marriage is illegal in Australia].
43% of parliament is female.

Iceland has edged out Norway in the world economic forum's most recent global gender gap index [Australia ranks 20th] which is based on its labour force participation, the ability of its women to rise to positions of power, leadership in business, wage equality, levels of literacy and education, life expectancy, child mortality, maternity leave benefits and basic human rights, Iceland is officially the best place on earth to be a woman.

A law is being passed that will shut down every strip club in the country, making it illegal for any business to profit from the nudity of its employees. As a result, it has become the first country in the world to ban stripping and lap dancing for feminist reasons (as opposed to religious ones).
A couple will get 9 months parental leave. 3 months each and a further 3 months to be dedicated between them.

Women still tend to have children young with 25.5 being the average age. And not having a partner is unlikely to raise an eyebrow. As they have a great childcare system and family and friends help each other.

There is no prejudice towards young mothers because everyone knows you can still educate yourself and achieve your dreams and have careers.

Iceland was the second country in the world after Russia in 1920 to legalise abortion in 1935. [Abortion rights in Australia differ from state to state. QLD: You could go to jail for 7 years for having one and 14 years for performing one.]
