I wonder how many new Blues songs were written in New England over the past few days. There's nothing compared to the rest of what the Earth's dished out elsewhere over the past three months, but this is our bad weather and we get to complain about it as well.

Hellotxt didn't hack it

We spent sometime with hellowtxt but found its interface somewhat wanting in the method it used to determine where the emailed entries would go. Posterous handles this in much more instinctive fashion when email is the method used to post messages.

Preemptive Skinning

Shearing perhaps would be a better word. We went as a family today to the local barber to remove what as left of the hair. The chemotherapy had left little on the sides but spared much of the mustache. It looked silly long without the beard to match it, so I trimmed it to military style. The intention is eventually take it off as well.

The second byproduct of the treatment was an increase in the green about the gills and loss of appetite. I hope this passes with the three way medication because my birthday dinner tomorrow night is at an Indian restaurant in Stoughton MA known for it's wonderfully spicy food.

Back from Dana Farber

It was an intense bit of infusion today.

The ten hours from the last time was cut to five.

My body is reacting in all sorts of interesting and confusing ways. It reacts one way from the treatment and the another from the medicine give to counter the side effects. It has the rhythm of a heated argument with me as the arena. The most obvious effect is extreme bone tiredness.

We are leaving at O-Dark thirty on our way to Dana Farber in Boston for our second of six rounds of Chemotherapy. Film at eleven. Well, maybe not film, but we'll try to remember to fill in the details.

Hellotxt.com and Hair Loss

Hair Razing Day

When dogs shed their hair, there is still some fur left. Today I noticed a ton of hair on the hood of my winter jacket. It is lined with a black felt-like material which set off my white and red hair nicely. I used a Bounce® sticky hair removing roller to take the hair off the hood and the collar to which it is attached. Then I did what may seem like a silly thing, I ran a the roller with a fresh sheet though both sides of my temples. It was like an instant rug; the hair came off so easily.

There is still hair there and I was going to go to a barber tomorrow just to get the rest off, but the spouse wants me to wait until Saturday so she can be there. I can't not give her that considering the amount of support she is giving me.
Another good thing is I found an old non-tech friend in NYC with SMS. Now everyone who should know, knows. No surprises. -30-

Interesting Things

The "interesting" thing this morning is I am starting to shed like a dog in Summer. I know it's only March, but at least there is a hope the weather will turn warm enough for me not to have what I've come to call the cancer hats. I lean toward baseball caps myself. Now, perhaps, I'll have an excuse to wear one indoors. This is something my Marine Corps training will have a hard time with.

The chemo #2 is on Thursday. The hair really started coming out today. Not in hand fulls but in amounts that can be noticed. I think a haircut on Friday may be in order. -30-

I would not want to be on a Canadian street for the next few hours, days perhaps. I have a feeling they will drop their famous native polite bearing and consume massive amounts of Moulson's and Seagram's 7.

The cancer card

If the blog entries have been sparse and few between, we are going to pull the cancer card.
Starting with the discovery of a lump in the neck the day before thanksgiving and up to last week I have gone through a roller coaster of emotions. “Could be cancer, could be something else.” This was the phrase that put a damper on getting treatment started. The next was “Could be lymphoma, could be carcinoma.”

Where we are now is it could be only aggressive or it could be aggressive combined with slow growing. To determine that a sample of the bone in my hip needs to be taken tomorrow.

The chemotherapy begins on Thursday. We’re expecting blizzard like conditions on Wednesday. My son was born during a blizzard, so I will take that as a good sign.

We Forgot the Blogs Fed by Ping.FM

The Famous Grazing blogs were all updated on the turn of the year, but we forgot to include those blogs which cannot use MS's LiveWriter and depend on Ping.fm to feed them.

That's the purpose of this short entry. It's important when you run a blog to keep the entries as up-to-date as possible. If you let a month slip, Xanga as an example, the blog appears and for all goods and purposes, is dead.

We've added PING.FM to a permanent sticky next to the computer screen to remind us when we post not to neglect Trounce Ally and the Xanga Weblog.

That Was a Quick Ten Years

As I recall the 1960’s, they took forever. Starting with Eisenhower still President and ending with his VP, Nixon as the same, everything in between seemed so full of moment, as narrated by Walter Cronkite.

A visit to the Newseum in Washington, D.C. last summer brought to focus how we were and now are presented with what is happening in the world. Back then the filter was huge. The networks had only forty or so minutes to tell us about what had happened in the last twenty-four hours. Then we went to the newspapers for details and Time and Life for the color photos.

This morning, before my shower and tea, I knew about a drone attack in Pakistan, bridge curve deaths in San Francisco/Oakland and saw pictures of New Year’s celebration around the world. I heard about the New Years Honours in the UK and New Zealand and the death of a philanthropist phrama heiress.

When I bring up Thunderbird, my email will tell me much more about what the intimate and commercial connections to me think I should know.

And then there is Facebook and Twitter. Before and after midnight last night, I was communicating with friends and acquaintances from Juneau to London, from New Zeeland to Manhattan.

I watched the first day of the year unfold through them from the fireworks on the South Island, to Sydney, New Delhi, Cape Town, Paris, London, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and then went to bed. Midnight is no longer so singular when you watch it happen over and over again.

And now we’re off with the kids to see Avatar. (We already saw Sherlock Holmes and loved it.)

It isn’t quite winter yet. That begins tomorrow at 17:47 UTC. (That’s 5:47 PM in London.)

However, it would appear Winter decided to send a calling card prior to arriving. I look out the second story window of my office down onto the driveway where my car should be parked and see a pile of snow with an antennae protruding from it like a sapling freshly broken from the soil.

To avoid going out to clear the two or so feet of snow atop the car, I thought it would be a good time to make a long neglected blog entry.

If you look out of the other side of the house you can see the relatively useless swimming pool. To this day, I do not understand the logic of having a swimming pool in northern New England.&; They cost a fortune to run and are good for three months, max.

At Eight PM Last Night

In my youth I had an image of where I would be so many decades later, meaning at my age now. I saw myself sitting in a high backed easy chair, by a fire, across from the missus, reading a good book.

That vision came to me last night as I sat at my laptop in one room, reading Twitter on Brizzly. The missus was downstairs in her home office reading the New York Times while my son was at his desk, on his Apple reading heaven-knows-what.

This is not the image from the past because none of these things, laptops, NYT.com or Apple Computers, existed back then. Okay, way back then.

So, young people, as you sit and envision where you’ll be and what you will be doing in forty or fifty years, fahgetaboutit! It doesn’t exist yet.

Enjoy the now and the stuff that makes the now, time.

A Burglary Happened

A friend was burgled last night. Everyone is asking what was taken. What was taken was a feeling of security, a feeling that the walls and doors protect you from the wolves and weather.

This happened to me many years ago. They took a cheap desk radio because there really was nothing else of value in the apartment. The radio had no sale value but was taken to justify the break-in. I invested in locks and gates and a steel bar contraption called a "Fox Lock."

Then I did what was really the only solution, I moved. Right after my bike was taken. They left the lock and chain, but must have cut the cross bar on the bike to take it.

To my friend, how soon before you move??

I Thought Posting to Posterous Automatically

I may not have is set up correctly, but I thought Posterous automatically sent the information loaded in the email to the other linked locations, such as Twitter and Blogger. It would appear not.

Here in New England there was a report of possible snow tonight into tomorrow morning. I have to give a speech at 1000 tomorrow. I can make it there whatever the weather, but certainly, if the snow does fall, will expect a smaller audience.
