Amanda was a friend of Michelle's that I'd heard about but had not yet had the pleasure of meeting. I was a little nervous at first but she quickly put me to ease with her amazing gifts of jewelry ;) She knows JUST how much I loved mine! Her friends & family were equally welcoming.... I enjoyed watching them interact & you'll see that some of my favorite moments were of just that! This was an amazing day and I'm so proud of the work we did & I hope that shows. I've been doing quite a few Senior sessions this year and they're quickly becoming my favorite kind of shoot (shhh! lol) It seems like every client, ESPECIALLY when it comes to Senior sessions, asks me to direct them in what to wear. Now, if you know me at all, you'll know that I don't mind having my two cents in the fashion bank but its not always easy short of going in to the clients home, pulling from their closet, and helping them put it all together. But along comes Salt & Prep....

Salt & Prep is a fashion blog for teens, created with the purpose of helping them find inspiration for portrait sessions, prom, or the everyday. It features real teens, real style, real inspiration, and where to find it! They post about how to rock the latest trends, a Things We Love section features different sites and stores they recommend, information on beauty, featured designers, and images from Senior sessions they thought worth sharing ;) Not only is this a great blog for teens, but for photographers that want to help style their clients, or point them in the right direction! Pass it on!

Discouraged much?

Lately, I've been so busy that I've barely had time for some of my favorite online photography communities - the hideout, clickinmoms, flickr, & deviantart . So the last few days I've been trying to find time to visit each, if only for a few minutes. The support is amazing, the resources invaluable, and I love to be able to pass on as much as I learn. But returning after the short time away I noticed a pattern in each of the different communities. Over and over I see photographers posting about how discouraged they are, whether it be with their work, their lack of clients, or with the orders. It got me thinking about how personal we tend to take our businesses. I don't necessarily mean photographers specifically... artists for sure, but business owners in general. We're putting ourselves out there with our own product, service, or talent so we tend to take criticism and perceived failures to heart. In our case, we aren't pushing someone else's product or service, but laying ourselves on the line personally. Its easy to get discouraged, for any of the above reasons.

What I often read, or hear is either, I don't know if I have what it takes to do this, OR, once they are started, I don't know if I should keep at this. The thing is, we all get discouraged - we don't get the job, the promotion, or some personal goal we had set out to achieve. What matters is how we react to that.

Learn from it! Part of what I know now, I only know from a previous mistake that I learned from. So you didn't nail it this time! It sucks! Definitely acknowledge the disappointment. But LEARN from it! Grow from it! Many successful people failed many, many times before succeeding. When we most tend to feel discouraged is in the learning process. If you're still learning, set backs are PART of that process. That just means there is more room for practice, experience and /or education. If you want it bad enough, you find what you can learn from the situation and push on! I'm not trying to say its easy. Just that we do have the power of that. Its up to US to keep going if we're going to succeed! We can sit back and watch it happen for other people, or we can work hard, and make it happen for ourselves. What will you choose?

These little ones came to me as a referral from another new client. Word of mouth is my favorite because it means someone was happy :) And what a wonderful family. Grandma came too, and I recognized her as being the 'girl' that sold me my Homecoming dress my, when I was the freshman Homecoming Attendant in high school. And YES, that was a very long time ago lol! But what I also love is when someone decides on a membership package because that means I'll be seeing more of these adorable little faces, and getting to watch them grow!

I have been so blessed in the last year with the direction my life has taken.... to be lucky enough to have a career that I'm completely in love with, to have met so many amazing people through my work, and to be able to do it all in a way that still allows me to home school my children and be with them, as much as I need to be. YES! I'm sorry, I ramble, but come on! I'm talking about two of my favorite things - my kids and my work/play! But my point is, its had me thinking a lot about 'giving back' so to speak, and all the ways I could possibly do so. And then I came across a December 2009 issue of Glamour. And I had to share.

1. Help get PJs to kids in shelters so they won't have to sleep in their clothes by giving just $10 at pajamaprogram.org
2. Mentor a struggling student online at icouldbe.org. Studies suggest that a little boost can double a kid's chance of going to college.
3. Donate books you've already read to your library. (Most public libraries accept them.)

My Mom & Sister have a boutique on Grandview Avenue in Columbus, Ohio. Super cute! Vintage stuff, new stuff, stuff you wanna look through all day! So I wanted my Sister to model some things from their store, let me photograph her, and we'd display some of them in their store. Mutual benefits, and a fun project, outside of my usual daily shoots. Of course I got a little sidetracked, by my Sister's beauty, & not everything ended up being as focused on fashion, or the product, as it should have been. Luckily I had that freedom with it! Either way, I wanted to share some of them. I'm not even half way done with this session but I can always share more later : ) And the last one is my Mom, just because!
