Between 1933 and 1945, 100,000 men were arrested by the Nazis for the crime of homosexuality under Paragraph 175 of the German penal code. Some of these men were imprisoned, others were sent to concentration camps. Only about 4,000 survived. In 2000, fewer than ten of these men were known to be living. Five come forward in this documentary to tell their stories for the first time. (81 minutes)

The bill achieves two things:
1. It modernizes the existing Hate Crime law by bringing its definitions into line with the Illinois Human Rights Act so there is no doubt that it covers gender identity. 2. Under the section on a Hate Crime of institutional vandalism, it adds gender and sexual orientation to the protected classes, making it clear that it would cover LGBT community centers.
