Chirping of birds can be music to the ears. But if they start dirtying your patio deck, it can be a real pain and you will start viewing them as pests. There are easy and effective tricks to stop birds from dirtying your patio deck. However, using just one technique may not prove as effective as a combination of techniques mentioned below.

Try these tips to keep bird off your patio!

Magnet:

Place a powerful magnet in your patio. It will disrupt the birds’ sensing direction and keep them away from the patio.

Bird Repellent:

This is a non-toxic way to keep birds away from your patio. You just apply it on the surface of the patio deck and furniture and when birds land on the surface, they will not like the sticky feel of it and fly away.

Old CDs:

Hang old CDs from the gutter surrounding your patio. When sunlight hits these CDs, they will reflect light everywhere and birds do not like it.

Visual Scare Devices:

Get fake owls, snakes and coyotes and place them on the deck. Birds will think they are real predators and stay away from your patio. However, be sure to keep changing the position of the devices to ensure their effectiveness.

Sonic Repellers:

These repellers emit cries of distress of the target species of birds and hunting cries of that species’ natural predators. They are quite effective, as they frighten birds and keep them away.

Roost Inhibitors:

Use spikes, sticky tapes and sticky chemicals on ledges, tree branches and outcroppings around the patio to keep birds from roosting and dirtying your patio and furniture.

Bird Feeders:

Place bird feeders away from the patio, so that the birds do not use your patio as a place to roost before heading to the feeder or after enjoying a good treat.

A few decades ago the phrase “synthetic grass” would conjure up images of extremely short, bright green AstroTurf. Technological advancements and design improvements have totally changed the world of synthetic grass and spawned high quality products that are so realistic looking you wouldn’t know it was fake unless you touched it.

It may not be an option you have given much thought to with regard to landscaping at your own home, but there are quite a few benefits to installing synthetic grass. Here are some of the advantages of having an artificial lawn:

Reduction of air and noise pollution by not having a lawn that requires mowing

No need to water the yard (saves money on your water bill and gives you more free time)

Artificial lawns do not require fertilization or aeration

Unsightly weeds will never plague and choke down a synthetic yard

Dead patches due to pet urine or other grass-killing circumstances are nonexistent

When a synthetic lawn starts looking a little dingy, it can be easily cleaned with a garden hose and is designed to allow for draining directly into the soil beneath the yard.

Despite the high cost of installing a synthetic lawn, the lack of maintenance required allows for the artificial grass to pay for itself within a decade. If you’ve recently become a homeowner or you are planning to stay in one place for at least ten years, it is definitely an option worth exploring.

Aside from the benefits of not having to care for and maintain a synthetic lawn as you would a real one, one of the biggest benefits is the way it looks. Artificial lawns are beautiful and gorgeously green all year long.

Your home is your castle, and you can make it even more beautiful by adding a patio constructed of concrete pavers. This is an affordable task you can do yourself, and the end result will be even more rewarding because you did tackle the challenge on your own.

Step One – Planning

You likely have your patio visualized, so put it on paper. Measure the area you want to cover so you will know the approximate quantity of paver tiles you’ll need. If you want any patterns or designs in the patio, include that in your sketch. Proper drainage is important, so make sure your patio is sitting on slightly sloped ground to prevent water from pooling on the patio itself.

Step Two – Ordering Materials

Now that you know the dimensions of your patio, order the paver tiles and filler (grouting, which is usually sand), as well as any border materials, if those will be needed. You will also need crushed rock, pea gravel, or concrete sand to use as the foundation.

Step Three – Outlines, Excavation, and Foundations

Outline the area for your patio with rope, and excavate a small layer of topsoil. After you’ve cleared the correct space and leveled it for proper drainage, spread a thin layer of foundation material and pack it down firmly.

Step Four – Paver Placement & Grouting

Place your paver tiles in the design you sketched out, using restrainer stakes to keep them in place, and make sure they are tamped down (preferably with a plate compactor). Spread sand into the grouting channels and sweep off the excess. (You may need to do this again in the future due to erosion.)

Step Five – Enjoy Your New Patio!

You’re done! Put out a lawn chair, grab a tall glass of iced tea, and enjoy your newly installed patio. Congratulations on a job well done!

Weeds are annoying. They can choke off plants in your garden, drive cracks into your pavement, and overrun your lawn, but the next time you think about using Round Up, think again.

The key ingredient in Round Up is glyphosate, trace amounts of which are now believed to have been found in food. This may not sound like a huge problem, given that many herbicides can be found in food (many people try to avoid this by switching to ‘organic’ foods and are no better off), but it is. The problem with glyphosate is that it enhances the damaging effects of other chemicals and toxins found in food. Many of these toxins have been linked to cancer, Parkinson’s Disease, and infertility.

Farmers are now planting millions of acres of genetically altered ‘Round Up-Resistant crops.’ Conceivably, crop dusting is the only way to grow produce on a mass scale without being over-run by weeds, and crops that would wither to glyphosate, the active agent in Round Up, just wouldn’t be conducive. Crop dusting results in a blanket herbicide that kills weeds at the base, and leaves the crops in question standing tall. Many crop dusters are using Round Up as their herbicide of choice.

Up until recently, this was thought to be a safe and effective way to get the job done.

A study performed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has suggested that this is no longer the case, and probably hasn’t been for a while. The presence of glyphosate in food has not been determined absolutely. Presently, the issue is under investigation. Scientists agree that the matter is of critical importance. If glyphosate is found in food, drastic safety measures will be imposed upon the agriculture industry to ensure that Round Up is no longer used in crop dusting.

Traces of natural beauty are important to the atmosphere and feel of your home. Adding an interior water fountain is an easy way to boost the natural beauty of your home.

Think of a peaceful environment with water trickling in the background soothing the entire room. This is what an interior water fountain brings to your home.

Indoor water fountains are aesthetically pleasing with their structure and natural beauty. They can be made with products like stone, copper, fiberglass and bamboo for a natural, gorgeous look and feel. You can choose if you want a classic style or modern style of fountain to bring traces of beauty to your interiors.

A fountain is not only pretty, but is also soothing and peaceful in the home. The waters flow through the fountain creating a trickling sound pleasant to the ear. A fountain is an easy way to bring a peaceful feeling to the room and lower your stress levels.

Indoor fountains release moisture into the air to soothe your skin as well as your soul. You may notice less allergen clogging your air or a fresh feel throughout the home. A fountain acts as a quiet humidifier that will not leave mildew in the air or on your walls.

Fountains can be a tabletop fountain that is small and just a pretty accent. They can also be mounted to the wall letting the waters cascade down. You can also have a freestanding fountain for even more peace and tranquility. Most recirculate the water through to save water.

Enjoy the beauty and peace an indoor fountain brings to your home.

Avoid mold and mildew build-up in your house with proper drainage. Mold and mildew can cause many problems for homeowners. From causing bad smells to destroying furniture, curtains, and other valuable items in your house, mold and mildew are serious threats that can even threaten structural integrity. The best way to stop mold and mildew, as well as a host of other threats to your home is through proper drainage. The good news is that this is easy to achieve with the simplest of knowledge and tools. Handle this problem before it becomes one easily and cheaply.

Gutters are key to good drainage. Relatively cheap and easy to install, gutters keep water away from your house and provide it with a route to the ground without weakening your exterior. Make sure your gutters have enough slope to effectively carry water away completely. The proper slope to ensure they drain completely is one to two inches per one foot of run.

Make sure the drain diverts the water away from the soft ground around your foundation. Water seeping into the foundation underneath your house is an even bigger threat to your house than mold and mildew as it can threaten the structure.

A trick to gutters that is often overlooked is the size of the downspouts. The wider these downspouts are, the less likely a small object can block them, causing significant back up. Make sure the downspouts cannot be blocked by a tennis ball or another small object.

Keeping to gutters clean obviously is key maintenance to ensure your gutters properly drain rain water away from your foundation and basement. Clear your gutters before you have to climb your ladder in the rain.

Many people desire to utilize their home space effectively to enhance its beauty. Others have a totally different approach to things. With the rising uncertainties regarding the manner in which various foods are grown, you may as well consider having your own garden to be sure of what chemicals you have in your diet. Since space is somehow limited, a perfect approach would be having a raised or hanging garden to leave you room to grow your favorite flowers too. You will find many benefits of using this approach.

Ease of Watering

If your garden is raised, you can plant other crops beneath the hanging garden. This means you use lesser water to irrigate the veggies and flowers since if water overflows under the veggie basket, it waters the crops below. This is like killing two birds with one stone. You also do not have to bend constantly when watering since the garden is already raised to a suitable level.

Effective Land Use

You may not have all the space need to have a plantation full of veggies. However, this does not mean you take the veggies grown using chemicals whose effects you may never wish to know. By having hanging or raised gardens, you need not have any additional space to grow veggies that are enough for the entire family. This means you do not have any wasted space thus getting value for your money.

Easy to Maintain

It is very easy to maintain raised gardens where you grow veggies for your family. The only thing that is time consuming is when raising the garden to ensure it does not fall off due to increased weight of the vegetables as they grow. Subsequently, you can even use drip irrigation or other methods that ensure you use the minimum time possible to water. These small gardens are also very easy to weed.

They Are Beautiful!

Raised gardens have a spectacular look especially when they have evergreen veggies. You can even forget about having flowers, which you may not know how to maintain. Some veggie flowers and leaves are very attractive!

Many people want to decorate their homes through growing various plants. They may want to make a specific pattern as the plants grow. Thus there is a need to find a way of shaping them to the desired shape. This is why various companies have come up with making sod for clients with various needs. You should keep in mind a few things when installing any sod in your outdoors.

Proper Measurements

When you have measured the area (in terms of square footage) to be sodded, ensure you add an allowance of five percent for cutting grass around the sod. This also ensures you do not damage the sod during cutting of anything around these structures.

Soil Preparation and Grading

Prepare the ground properly by adding a top soil on the surface on which you will place the sod. This makes it easy for grass roots to penetrate the surface and even attach itself strongly. Also, remove anything that may prevent easy root penetration. Ensure you level the soil using a grading rake to ensure there are no bumps. You may have to use a sod roller if the soil is not uniform.

Buy and Lay the Sod

You need to buy the sod from a reputable supplier. Remember that you should buy something at least two feet long that is quite dense and does not easily detach because it already has its roots network to hold its soil. When laying, place the first row of sod nearest to the edge of any structure. You should use a sod cutter to adjust the shapes to your desire.

Watering and maintenance

Water for at least 45 minutes within the first two weeks to push roots into the soil. After that 20-30 minutes shall be enough. Mow the sod when it has firmly attached to the ground.

A boring place with no life, isolated and no mere trace of hospitality, this is probably the picture that crosses your mind when you think of a desert. However, deserts do not have to be boring, especially when we are talking about your garden. Read on for some tips that will make your make visitors envious of your desert garden.

Desert plants have different mechanisms of coping with the dry conditions. They have leaves and stems that are so pleasant to the eye. Plants such as cacti and yareta are great choices for your desert garden.

Cactus is arguably the most common desert garden plant. If you are looking to grow it, there are a variety of species you can go for. Ideally, you should look for paddle cactus, the most favored species of the cactus family for garden cacti. Alternatively, plant the golden barrel cactus which has an interesting architecture. Apart from cactus, other plants that will be great for a desert garden include:

The agave. This desert plant is used to make tequila and is also great for decoration. The plant produces rosettes of fleshy and wonderfully colored leaves and can be easily cared for when put in a pot.

Yuccas. This is another desert plant that should be in your garden. The plant features spiky foliage and offers a nice base where other plants can evolve.

Cleome. The plant is a great choice for your desert garden. The plant can grow between other plants.

Cacti and euphorbia dessert plants are perfect selections for home owners in areas that are hot and dry. If you decide to keep the plants, make sure your desert garden is in an enclosure. Also, park the plants tightly like the way annuals are packed to support them to grow. To enhance the look, you may also keep the heaps of golden sand around the plants.
