I’m Not A Hipster!

…but you sure do seem like one.

One of the early films to play at this year’s Sundance film festival was I Am Not a Hipster, the film by Destin Daniel Cretton in which Dominic Bogart plays a San Diego musician who has to deal with himself and his family during not entirely welcome visits from his father and sisters.

The film has been praised for emotional honesty, the performance by Bogart and direction by Cretton, and the many songs which are woven into the narrative, and which have helped the film earn comparisons to Once.

While the dialogue-free footage won’t give you much indication of the characters or plot, you’ll get a taste of the film’s general aesthetic, and of the songs that run through it. And, yeah, it looks and sounds quite good.

You Never Marry the Right Person – Tim Keller

Recently, there have been two well-known pastors release books on the subject of marriage.

Mark Driscoll released earlier this week his new book, Real Marriage, which has been surrounded with controversy and after reading it I believe that the negatives far outweigh the positives of the book.

The other book recently released is Tim Keller’s, Meaning of Marriage, which is a book I would recommend to anyone and everyone. Below is an excerpt on the subject of people never marry the right person:

The first reason that no two people are compatible for marriage, namely, that marriage profoundly changes us. But there is another reason. Any two people who enter into marriage are spiritually broken by sin, which among other things means to be self-centered—living life incurvatus in se. As author Denis de Rougemont said, “Why should neurotic, selfish, immature people suddenly become angels when they fall in love … ?” That is why a good marriage is more painfully hard to achieve than athletic or artistic prowess. Raw, natural talent does not enable you to play baseball as a pro or write great literature without enduring discipline and enormous work. Why would it be easy to live lovingly and well with another human being in light of what is profoundly wrong within our human nature? Indeed, many people who have mastered athletics and art have failed miserably at marriage. So the biblical doctrine of sin explains why marriage—more than anything else that is good and important in this fallen world—is so painful and hard.

The reason that marriage is so painful and yet wonderful is because it is a reflection of the Gospel, which is painful and wonderful at once. The Gospel is—we are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared to believe, and at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope. This is the only kind of relationship that will really transform us. Love without truth is sentimentality; it supports and affirms us but keeps us in denial about our flaws. Truth without love is harshness; it gives us information but in such a way that we cannot really hear it. God’s saving love in Christ, however, is marked by both radical truthfulness about who we are and yet also radical, unconditional commitment to us. The merciful commitment strengthens us to see the truth about ourselves and repent. The conviction and repentance moves us to cling to and rest in God’s mercy and grace.

The hard times of marriage drive us to experience more of this transforming love of God. But a good marriage will also be a place where we experience more of this kind of transforming love at a human level.

As 2011 comes to a close, Nielsen reviewed the top online destinations, social media sites, and smartphone devices. Google was the most-visited U.S. Web brand, while Facebook held its lead among social networks and blogs. Smartphones were popular in 2011, making up the majority of new phone purchases with Apple as the top smartphone manufacturer and Android as the leading OS.

Though Mark Zuckerberg and Co. must settle for second in overall visitors, Facebook maintains its commanding lead in the social networking realm, with Blogger and Twitter lagging by a wide margin. Color us surprised to find that MySpace still musters a decent showing, coming in fifth ahead of LinkedIn, Tumblr, and recent entrant Google+.

Abortion Gang: to donate $10 to pro-abort group every time Tim Tebow scores touchdown.

A blogger with a popular pro-abortion blog is urging readers to “support” vocally pro-life NFL quarterback Tim Tebow by donating to a pro-abortion group every time he scores a touchdown this Sunday against the New England Patriots.

“For every touchdown Tebow throws next week … donate $5 or $10 to your local pro-choice organization,” urges ‘Sophia’ of the Abortion Gang blog.

“I figure this is indeed the best way to enjoy football, support Tim Tebow (more touchdowns, mannn!!!), and give, give, give to pro-choice organizations earning little to no glory, yet desperately in need of funds,” she adds.

Despite receiving criticism for his Christian and pro-life beliefs, which has only increased since he took over as starting quarterback with the Broncos this fall, Tebow has remained unapologetic for his outspokenness.

Tebow has lit up the NFL scene this year, sporting a critic-defying 7-1 record, and becoming likely the NFL’s most talked about player in the process.

“Even I, the anti-Tebow, anti-Bronco fan, basketball-loving woman that I am, have been rooting for him. Yeah, he’s that damn good,” writes Sophia at Abortion Gang.

“But it always feels a bit, well, wrong. How can I support a guy that’s openly anti-choice?” she asks.

“This is the same man that used the Super Bowl to a) build his reputation and brand as the saintliest saint of an athlete that ever lived, and b) raise money for an anti-choice organization that would deny the right to abortion to millions of women that need it. Yuck,” she adds.

“If you’re a sports fan that also thinks women should be able to do what they want, when they want, and how they want it with their uteri, you can join in this too.”

Sophia says she plans to continue the pledge into the playoffs if the Broncos make it.

My prayer is that no one would support such a perverted campaign.

MetaSurf – A New Tool To Protect Against Adult Websites

Another great tool and resource to help protect your family, your children, and yourself from the pornographic material that can be found on the internet is MetaSurf.

Irish entrepreneur Paul Walsh has launched his latest venture MetaCert which catalogs and labels web pages with adult content just as .XXX domains went live this month.

Since its launch, the software, which comes in the form of a free Firefox bowser plugin called MetaSurf (Chrome to launch soon), has labeled over 320 million sexually explicit webpages. The software enables parents to set a pass code, which must be entered to access a labeled page.

MetaCert’s technology is able to distinguish between a webpage containing sexually explicit adult content and a URL hosting important information about breast cancer, for example. It works not only for sites listed in search results but also for those ‘linked to’ within websites – including from within social networking sites. Facebook recently fell victim to a hacking attack during which violent and pornographic images appeared unexpectedly in some of its users’ News Feeds. MetaSurf also blocks access when the URL is typed manually into the browser.

Walsh, who began his career at AOL in the mid 1990’s and later founded MetaCert, said:

“The labeling software gives Internet users an unprecedented level of control: no longer do all sites have to be uniformly blocked or unblocked, since responsible adults can choose whether or not to enter the pass code which will enable them to progress through to a labeled site. They can do this safe in the knowledge that others in the household are still protected.

Importantly, our system does not block or manipulate content and does not affect search result ranking. All it does is to let users know that individual search results point to adult content. Whether a user follows such links remains entirely a matter of personal choice, but it’s an informed choice.

Similarly, we can reassure users that our technology does not in any way track what they do on the web – privacy of all users is important to us.”

I have started testing out MetaSurf for only a couple of days now but I am finding it to be a really great option and resource for families to use.

The quasi commercial by Clive Coffee says if a five-year-old can make it themselves, than surely you can too.

Remembering Wyatt Mitchell – A Year Later

A year ago today, a close friend and brother, Wyatt Mitchell, passed away after years of battling cancer. In these past couple of weeks I began reflecting on death and the beauty of salvation in Christ as I remember the testimony and life that Wyatt lived.

It is a joy to celebrate the life of Wyatt since he is one who was faithful to loving God, to loving his wife, and to proclaiming the gospel. And I’m reminded of these truths that Wyatt’s physical body may be dead, but he will never see death since his public testimony of salvation in Christ preaches that he is alive and with Christ in heaven!

Remember what John tells us,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John 5:24

Believers on Jesus have passed already from death to life.

They have now already an eternal life. Eternal life cannot—cannot by definition—end.

Believers do not see death. Do not taste death.

Our bodies die. They lie—looking like they are sleeping, which is why the New Testament sometimes calls death falling asleep—they lie in the grave until the last trumpet. “For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:52).

But when our bodies die, we do not die. We have passed from death to life. Eternal life. Unbroken, unending life.

What that means is this: When we were born again, we received the gift of life. Spiritual life (JOHN 3:6–8). When we were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive (EPHESIANS 2:4–5). This new life is eternal life. In this new spiritual life, we are able to fellowship with God, know God, experience God, speak with God, hear from God through his word, sense the love of God shed abroad in our hearts (ROMANS 5:5). This is the work of the Holy Spirit.

This fellowship that we enjoy with God cannot be ended. It cannot be broken. It is eternal.

When our bodies die, we do not experience any break in our fellowship with God through Christ. Our fellowship, in fact, in that instant is perfected (HEBREWS 12:23). The life we have with Christ in God today, because of the new birth, will never end. We will not see the end of it. And we will not taste the end of it. Because there is no end of it.

But without even knowing it, I see how my fear of death is a slave master binding me with invisible ropes, confining me to small, safe, innocuous, self-centered ways of life. Wyatt had no fear of death and he saw the importance of proclaiming the gospel to unbelievers with no fear.

As I reflect on Wyatt’s life and death, my prayer is that I too will embrace this truth that in Christ I will never see death and that I am freed by grace to live boldly for Christ proclaiming the good news of the gospel.
