When asked if he would be willing to take on WR’s with past issues of having problems with their QB, he responded “I’d love to,”

Then to prove how he could handle it he threw Chad Ochocinco under the bus by saying “If any qb can deal with extravagant wrs, it’s me.”

.

Yeah and by the way, with the Ravens signing Bolden the Bengals are the only real team interested in Owens, so yeah guys get used to the idea. Terrell Owens will more than likely be a Bengal. They are also looking at signing Antonio Bryant the insane but talented WR from Tampa Bay. So all in all Matt Jones being on the team doesn’t look so bad..hold that, yeah it does look bad.. I still don’t get why we signed Matt Jones. Can anyone explain that to me?

.

Can’t we just PLEASE sign Kevin Walter?

Hopefully the Bengals will do something to address our problems at WR….

.

The Steelers and the Browns both need help there as well to be honest… we are a RB strong WR week division (Chad Ochocinco not included as a week WR)

.

As in years past the Bengals did NOT explode on the free agent market first day spending much cash, matter of fact they spent no cash and seem un-likely to spend any cash before the end of the weekend.

.

Hopefully we can get a few guys to help the club, and keep the important guys from last year…

.

But I have to think that they are in the Boldin sweepstakes somehow someway, but my personal preference is they go out and sign Kevin Walter and Terrell Owens, that would I think be our best options at WR even though I have never been a huge TO fan, I have always been a Walter fan.

The NFL draft is about 7 weeks away, but free agency starts in less than 2 hours…

.

fallout so far is WR Laveranues Coles has been cut

The Bengals tendered draft-level offers to linebackers Abdul Hodge and Rashad Jeanty, cornerback David Jones, guard Evan Mathis and defensive end Frostee Rucker on Thursday. They would get a pick matching the player’s original round. While Defensive tackle Shaun Smith, TE Daniel Coats, J.P. Foschi and Matt Sherry weren’t tendered, allowing them to become free agents.

.

So who are the Bengals looking for, as you know in our mock draft that I think the Bengals will go TE in the draft, leaving a need at WR, OT, C, DT, DE, S. So I look for the Bengals to pursue the following in free agency

Kevin Walter from Houston he is a good player and a former player who does not dislike the team or Marvin Lewis.

he is the best vertical WR out there (and yes I remember TO is there)

Safety Oshiomogho Atogwe from the Rams who is a restricted free agent, but will bring some youthful experience to the position if we can’t keep Roy Williams

DT Damione Lewis formerly of the Panthers could be a back up they will look at.

DE Shaun Rogers is available for trade and Coach Lewis likes the guy, even though I hate him, but the fact is if you keep the guy healthy, he’ll eat OT’s for lunch… He is still a monster and while not an every down player, could still have a lot of impact.

TO could come to us as well, but not till later on in free agency if no one else picks him up look for Mike Brown to try to get a deal, and not care what Marvin or Carson Palmer want to see.

.

I will update more as I can…

So anyone else wonder why everyone except for the Cincinnati Bengals are aparently interested in Anquan Boldin?

.

You hear they are, then they aren’t interested in TO, so why NO interest in Boldin? He could play good second fiddle to Chad Ochocinco as long as he knows he would be a number 2, but maybe that is the problem.

.

As you should have seen in our mock draft that I think the Bengals will go TE in the draft, but even over on espn they ask the question “Will the Bengals complete a forward pass in 2010?”. OUCH

.

How bad would it hurt us to sign Julius Peppers? Could you imagine the damage we could do with our CB’s and Odom and Peppers on the outside? Scary, very scary… Just sayin.

.

Will we keep Laveranues Coles? If so I guess I have to ask WHY? TO would be an upgrade there I am sorry to say, and I like Coles, I don’t know what happened to him, but Cincinnati just isn’t for him…

see the full draft at the above link

.

Jermaine Gresham from the University of Oklahoma

The 6′ 6″ 262 lb Tight End fix to the Bengals long standing problems at TE. Reggie Kelly will be back most likely for this year, but he will most likely retire or move on after this season, after drafting Chase Coffman last year and everyone thinking (maybe realizing) that he is a bust, the Bengals will pick up the hopefully all the way healed up Jermaine Gresham.

Gresham even if a little slow out of the gate will have some time, but not much to catch on to the Bengals playbook, and picking up blocking is a must (just ask Chase Coffman). Speaking of Coffman, after the LONG season he and the fans endured, it is definitely put up or get cut time for him, I can’t envision Mike Brown paying him to sit and rot, and we can only keep so many tight ends. Kelly, Foschi, Coffman, and Gresham will be one to many already so I would look for Foschi to either start the year on the practice squad to make room, or cut all together. I also supsect Daniel Coats will be cut outright (but possibly sent to the practice squad, dependent on what they do with Jeremi Johnson at fullback).

.

Gresham had great production every year until 2009 a knee injury knocked him out of the entire year (so hey he’s rested right?). He has a very rare combination of Size 6′ 6″ 262 lbs, and is very fast, very strong, and very athletic, lets just say it now, he is a freak of nature (kind of like Michael Johnson at DE). Anytime you have a guy like that at a skill position that you have a need for it, it is a risk worth taking even with the injury. This guy has a gift for getting to the endzone and racking up lots of YAC (yards after catch), he is a vertical threat on every down, only a handful of tight ends in NFL history that you can say that about, let alone in Bengals history. So yeah again he had an injury, BUT the risk reward is so heavy on the reward side, and we have a need in the same spot.

.

We all know the Bengals want to go defense here, but WR and TE is such a need that if this guy or WR Dez Bryant is available it’s a no brainer. I have to admit though if USC Safety, Taylor Mays is available at this spot in the draft which I don’t expect him to be, the Bengals will take him ahead of either offensive player. The Bengals are making a commitment to defense, but he is the only outstanding defensive guy (though Dan Williams could be interesting if available) that MAYBE be left at this spot in the first round.

.

I look for the Bengals to pick up a WR via Free Agency and go TE in the draft, and yes I think the Bengals are VERY serious about T. Owens, and before you blast him, he has been great almost anywhere he has been the first year he has been there, last year was no exception, he didn’t put up the usual number, but guys, he was in BUFFALO. Look for a one year deal, and a HIGHLY motivated Owens to show up and be lose and have fun next to Chad Ochocinco and have horrible contests to see who can get fined the most or do the worst/best end zone celebration.

So there ya have it, my predictions, let me know what you think…

.

The Fanball Sports Network has put their first NFL season in the books as well and, like the faithful fans they support, our correspondents emerge with a desire to keep that momentum moving forward.

With that in mind and with the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine lurking in the distance, we have brought the group together for the launch of our talent evaluation season marked by the first annual Fanball Sports Network NFL Mock Draft.

Each of the team correspondents from our NFL family will take the reins of their particular franchises as we construct our own version of the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft… and for those of you in Chicago and Charlotte, while the fates have pushed you out of that moment of glory this season, we will not let you go without. ALL of our correspondents will be taking part as those teams relinquishing first-round selections will offer thoughts on what their teams may have done.

To enhance the experience we’ve opened multiple avenues for you to follow our progress.

Each selection will be announced and our progress will be updated throughout on a unique thread at RotoJunkie.com, the preeminent sports community on the net and the home of Fanball’s message-board mavens, and we would like to invite each and every one of you to comment, question, debate, and lobby for your NFL hopefuls right there in the thread with us. We’ve asked all of our correspondents to track that thread and if you have questions or thoughts to share, we’ll make sure the boys are there to answer.

That’s not all… during the draft our correspondents will be offering brief commentary following their selections at RotoJunkie.com. However, you will also find an adjoining link attached to those selections on the thread. Those links will steer you back to our blogs where you will find extended commentary and analysis on those selections. Our correspondents have worked hard to give you thoughtful insights from the local scene throughout the season and we’re looking to step up our game for our first-ever NFL mock draft. You’ll find that extra effort on each of our blogs following each selection, and you’ll have quick and convenient access to those offerings through our draft thread at RotoJunkie.com. We want to thank you for your support over this, our first year on the sports blog scene, and we keep that appreciation going by inviting you to enjoy this mock draft with us. Come check out the discussion at RotoJunkie, hit up the blogs to read what your team’s correspondent is thinking, and let us know what you think.

Enough is enough… let’s get to it. Will Horton from RamsHerd.com will kick us off shortly with the first pick on behalf of the St. Louis Rams. Follow us on RotoJunkie HERE and make sure you hit up the links for extended analysis on each pick.

Thanks for tuning in, and enjoy.

(And here is a link for that “HERE” to the RotoJunkie thread…
