Benign Mesothelioma

Benign mesothelioma is generally composed of a single, non-cancerous tumour within the lining of the lung. There is some debate within the medical community whether benign mesothelioma, like malignant mesothelioma, is caused by exposure to asbestos. Benign mesothelioma, also known as benign-fibrous type, is now referred to within the medical community as Solitary Fibrous Tumour of the Pleura if the tumour is found in the lining of the lungs.

There are non-fatal forms of mesothelioma, and they are known as benign mesotheliomas. These are usually harmless form of mesothelioma. The benign abdominal multi cystic mesothelioma is a rare disease. Usually a malignancy of the ovary is suspected prior to and during surgery. Benign mesothelioma is a rare disease characterized by the presence of a fibrous tumour in the pleura, the membrane that surrounds the lungs. Benign mesothelioma is a non-cancerous tumour of the pleura (lining of the lung and chest cavity). Non-malignant mesothelioma is usually a localized tumour that affects men more frequently than women.

However rarely mesothelioma victims can develop a milder tumour called Benign Mesothelioma. Although both are tumour diseases that are caused by exposure to asbestos Benign Mesothelioma has a short latency period in contrast to the malignant type which typically has a very long latency period. Benign Mesothelioma is treated by surgery alone while malignant mesothelioma is treated by different modes of treatment including surgery, and chemotherapy.

There are non-fatal forms of mesothelioma too, and they are known as benign mesothelioma. These are usually harmless forms of mesothelioma. When one hears the term benign mesothelioma, they might naturally think that the condition is life threatening. The real fact is the exact opposite.

Benign mesothelioma is a tumour, not a cancer. Tumour and cancer are the same, but the difference lies in the manner they act on the human body. A type of non cancerous (benign) mesothelioma can develop in the lining of the lungs, or in the lining of the reproductive organs. It can occur in either men or women. These non cancerous tumours are very rare.

Benign mesothelioma is not considered life-threatening by itself; however, its presence is a risk factor for future development of the malignant form of mesothelioma. Benign mesothelioma is very rare, and makes up less than 10% of all mesothelioma cases in the United States.

Doctors often use the appearance of benign mesothelioma as the launching point for an investigation to discover if a patient has any other asbestos related symptoms.

Benign mesothelioma is non-cancerous and can develop in some cases. It has to be carefully observed just in case cancerous tumours and tissue form. While the vast majority of mesothelioma cases are malignant, benign - or non-malignant - mesothelioma can occur in some cases. Benign or solitary mesothelioma is also called pleural fibroma. Asbestos exposure plays no role on the etiology of benign mesothelioma. Benign mesothelioma causes no symptoms and is detected as an incidental radiologic finding. Sometimes the tumour is associated with systemic syndrome of osteoarthropathy.

Mesothelioma (benign-fibrous). Definition: A non-cancerous tumour of the pleura (lining of the lung and chest cavity). Benign mesothelioma is not cancerous and through treatment, a full recovery is possible for patients diagnosed. Since it is not a form of cancer, benign mesothelioma is typically addressed easily and immediately once detected. Symptoms of benign mesothelioma are quite similar to those of malignant mesothelioma.
