The first Land Rover was manufactured in 1948 and was originally owned by The Rover Company. It has been owned by Indian Company Tata Motors since 2008 after it formed part of the Jaguar Land Rover Group in 2008. Aside from the Jeep it’s the oldest four wheel drive car in the world but what will this new joint venture mean for the future of this British classic?

Jaguar Land Rover are adamant that this new venture will not reduce the company’s reliance on our UK plants, but it will help to facilitate the growth that they hope to achieve around the world – including China which is set to become the world’s biggest car market.

From 2014 Jaguar Land Rover plan to build an estimated 130,000 cars a year in China, at a new plant in Shanghai, with could rise to 250,000 cars a year by 2020. Models that will be built over there will include the Land Rover Freelander and a yet to be decided Jaguar saloon. Jaguar Land Rover say that neither the Range Rover or the Range Rover Sport will ever be made outside of the UK due to their complex nature.
