I was on Rhett and Links show a few weeks ago, and I was given the job of making an image starring Oreos. The maker of oreos are holding a contest for the best oreo cookie related video on Youtube, so the idea of having a video about the making of this image was brought up. But the prize isn't much to speak of (What cheapskates! Truly unbelievable.), so I didn't bother.

I was invited to be in a group show at a gallery downtown (Indianapolis). Everyone got one large piece of paper to work with. You could do anything you wanted with it- paint, draw, origami, whatever. I procrastinated for 3 months or so, and then yesterday I made this, because I have to drop it off today.

Badly Dubbed Japanese Movie

I was interviewed by Rhett and Link last Thursday on their live internet show. The bad part is, there's some kinda technical problem that threw the sound way off on the recording, so this looks like an old Japanese movie that's been badly dubbed. Really, I think that's how you should approach watching this if you choose to watch- pretend we're Japanese, and this is the English speaking version.

The whole first hour is the preshow, where nothing much happens. For my part, skip to the 1 hour 23 minute mark.

For those who like the lip movement to match the same words (or even the same sentence), maybe this will get fixed some day.

Yes, it's Strangely Orange Snack Appreciation Day!

All those months agoI decided to invent my own holiday, and now it's finally here. It's been weirdly strange and fun, I encourage everyone to start their own special day. I'm all for HOLIDAY ANARCHY! I mean- who invented Sweetest Day? We already have Valentines for pity sake!

Anyway, I started my day out like this
Sweet Potato Pancakes (I've yet to get the middle of them done as much as I'd like).

"Ice Cube Dreams"

It was a challenge, alright. After several false starts, I figured out that using a drill was the best way to go about putting wire in an ice cube. After I figured that out, the adventure really began. I think this is ice cube number seven or so.

I've had the idea for the ice cube shot for a day, but haven't been motivated to try and make it. Geez, it's gonna be a challenge, but it'll be good though I think.

On another note- I'm not a person who throws parties, but it would be amiss if we didn't have a Strangely Orange Snack Appreciation Day party on Saturday. We made a list this evening; using your ideas about our menu for the day. My wife was just wondering if they have an orange Moonwalk thingy that we can rent. I doubt it, but that would be cool (I love those moonwalk things).

For all of you other Bent Object visitors who want to participate on this joyous occasion, please email me your photos, and I'll post 'em as I get them. I'll be posting pictures all day long! I'll be posting pics of what we eat, of our guests, and anything else that is orange! More on this later.

It's been a long time since we've done this. This is your chance to name an object for me to use in a shot.

OXO Moving Card

I was happy to make this image for OXO. They needed an image to send out as a change of address announcement. We already had several pieces of theirs in our utensil drawer, so I knew they made a quality product.

OXO isn't paying me to put this on my blog, I just thought Bent Objects visitors might want to see it. I made this out of two peelers, two pizza cutters, a set of measuring spoons, and one corn cob holder (plus annealed and galvanized wire).

Some good news- Rhett and Link are coming next week to interview me. They're some funny guys who I met in New York. They have a live internet show every Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The show is family friendly, if you have kids, or are one.

Anyway, the interview will be on Youtube, and I'll post it here somehow when it's available. I'm sure I'll come off as a total nitwit, but I gotta be me, right?

Influences for images

This first image is one from my Iron Man series from a couple of weeks ago. Turned out to be far more popular than I expected. Usually the ones that I have doubts about are the biggest hits. I didn't have any doubts about the actual photos, what I was doubtful of was the soundtrack that accompanied it! (look for it over on the sidebar. you're supposed to play it as you look at the series of images.)

Thought I'd show an old comic book cover that influenced me. I just had to search the internet for it so I could post it here, and I forgot how great it truly is! So much more action than how I remembered it! My Iron Man image isn't nearly as fantastic, but I thought I'd share where my brain was at then.

At the moment, I'm working on an image for the book that is directly influenced by an old Muhammad Ali photo. I'm really happy how it's coming along, and I think it'll be a really fun image.

An official t-shirt! Are you kidding me? I finally have something for sale? Unbelievable.
I've even got mugs and buttons too. I'm totally selling out, people!

It took three tries, but we finally figured out what kind of image looks good on these direct print shirts. The image is supposed to last, and I couldn't see much shrinkage after washing (the shirt, that is).

For those of you who don't remember, I invented a day to celebrate weird orange snacks (Strangely Orange Snack Appreciation Day). Why? Why not? If Hallmark can invent a holiday, then the rest of us can too, darn it! Here's my Cafepress store.

On another note, I need to gather ideas of orange food and drink, because I've chosen to ONLY eat and drink that color on June 21st, 2008. That will be the first official S.O.S.A.D., and is usually also the Summer Solstice (except this year, when it inconveniently falls on the previous day). I was thinking, maybe I should ask Bent Objects visitors to help make up my menu for that day. Feel free to leave your ideas in the comment section!

When I was a kid, I read my share of comic books. I'm not much into them now, but I remember them fondly, and still get excited when a movie starring one of the characters premiers. Over the weekend, I was one of the billion people who went to see Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr.

How would I rate the movie? I liked it a bunch. Check it out sometime.

I was always interested in the jarred up little creatures in biology class. I also think of the
"Abby Normal" scenes in Young Frankenstein. But this is dedicated to a friend known as "bunnie", who collects preserved specimens.

I was honored to speak at the GEL conference yesterday, and wanted to say a special "hello" to anyone from there who may be visiting. They had a lot of interesting speakers, and I'm sure some of the creative thinking that I witnessed there will work its' way into the blog here.
