In her discussion of two recent films from Brazil, “I’m Still Here” and “The Secret Agent”, Bruna Della Torre detects a partial erasure of the history of the Left. This erasure relieves the present of the burden of distinguishing between a legitimate armed struggle against an illegitimate state and an illegitimate armed struggle against a legitimate one.

Reproductive technologies and their associated forms of commodification and profit-making emerged in the 1980s. Since then, these technologies have evolved into a global fertility industry that constitutes a highly dynamic economic sector today. In her article, Susanne Lettow maps the emerging trajectories of reproductive bioeconomies in neo-authoritarian capitalism and suggests a path for critique and resistance.

In the face of the planetary polycrisis, anyone who wishes to speak of social transformation and democratization cannot avoid addressing the role of higher education. Education, in general, and higher education, in particular, are rightly considered prerequisites for overcoming our predicament. However, the spaces where educational processes occur are increasingly being co-opted by the very forces that caused the polycrisis. As Mariya Ivancheva argues in her contribution to the “Deep Democracy” series, it is therefore high time to focus on educational institutions as sites of struggle.

To overcome capitalism, we must accept the magnitude of the task at hand and abandon certain illusions. We should engage with the political goals of classical socialists, such as the rule of the class-conscious proletariat and revolutionary upheaval. These goals were integral to the thinking of Karl Marx and Rosa Luxemburg, yet today they are often ignored or dismissed too easily because they are currently unthinkable and even incomprehensible. However, this may be the only way to achieve socialism. Or perhaps not. In any case, to pose these questions meaningfully, we must first develop agency and awareness, as Felix Ahls argues.

For almost a year and half, one of the largest student movements in Europe has been transforming Serbia’s society. The protests, which have drawn hundreds of thousands of people, are not just a form of resistance against an authoritarian regime. As Nina Djukanović argues, through collaboration with other groups, such as environmental organizations and local anti-mining movements, a new vision of development and democracy is emerging.

The practice of democracy does not necessarily occur within the institutions that comprise a democratic state. In light of this, it is important to examine some of the less obvious moments in the history of democracy-building, particularly in countries like Ukraine, where the forgotten miner strikes of the 1980s and 1990s paved the way for democratization. In her contribution to the “Deep Democracy” series, Emily Channell-Justice reconstructs their political potential.

In the capitalist system, economic processes are separated from democratic oversight, and the concept of a self-regulating market prevails. When the economy determines the living conditions of the majority yet the majority lacks democratic participation in economic decision-making, the legitimacy of democracy becomes a fundamental and often overlooked issue. Against this backdrop, Katarina Peović argues for a democratic protagonism of the working masses in her contribution to the “Deep Democracy” series.

Corporate-backed food aid programs have become the standard response to hunger. However, Kayleigh Garthwaite argues that we must recognize these programs as a symptom of the systemic failures that produce hunger. At the same time, we must work to build a society based on prefigurative practices rooted in collective care, shared responsibility, and local control.

Kasia Narkowicz places this ‘border crisis’ within the broader context of the political economy of migration, revealing its roots in overlapping and intersecting racialized violence.
