Apple & Lemon on Red

2012-02-27T09:04:00.000-08:00

I want to start adding more color to my oil paintings, so for my this still life I chose a red background. Nice bold color, and believe it or not, a bit of a challenge! The red background and the subtle reflection on the fruit had me thinking. Capturing that red wasn't easy, its a rich color. It was a good study, as always I learned a lot.

Fresh of the press! Here's a picture of my latest oil painting. I liked this shot of painting still on my french easel. I had just completed it. With this painting I was taking pictures of my production process. I'm going to put together a simple youtube slide show of how I'm producing my paintings. From beginning to end. It was fun taking pictures of the different stages. Then I viewed my pics on my digital camera and it was interesting to look back at the steps I take to get to the final piece. Hopefully this slide show can inspire others to pick up some art supplies and create some simple paintings.s.

Red Delicious Apple Painting

My 2nd oil painting! Again, just keeping the subject simple with small canvas size, 6x8, on gessobord. When the canvas is small, I finish the piece in less time and get that rewarding feeling of completion sooner. I really need that right now, it motivates me to do another one, and the more painting I do, the more confident I'll get.

I chose a simple subject, I used a Red Delicious apple on its side to fill the canvas. It's a simple apple yet complex enough to make me focus on its shape and depth to make sure I communicate it's an apple on its side.

I'm so excited and motivated. I've started painting again. Feels so good. Here's my first painting in a long time. I hadn't painted in a while so I decided to keep the subject simple. Just an apple and an orange on a flat background.

I hesitated in starting, but once I started applying the paint I was on a role. I kept it simple because I wanted to familiarize myself again with the paints, brushes, the subject, lighting, and with the choice of color and mixing them on the pallet.

The whole process went well, except for some glitches, like I couldn't get the tube of white paint open and I don't have pliers. It was kinda funny, I finally muscled it. I did feel rusty but had good results. More to come. I finished my 2nd painting, will post it soon. Looking forward to the next one.

Hello friends and family! I'm back! I miss you all, I've been drawing and illustrating a lot lately. Living in sunny southern California has been making it tough for me to stay indoors to create still life paintings. Here's a piece I really enjoyed creating! I painted this one in the evening which was nice because I could really control the lighting. Let me know what you all think. Would love to hear from you. Cheers, BG

What a great shape to paint, simple and difficult, you can't just paint a circle with a stem. Well I guess you can, I was trying to capture the pumpkin-ness of this pumpkin and I think I did it. It was a fun piece. One thing I learned is keep it simple; I find myself wanting to add more objects. Simpler also makes the learning process easier. Happy Halloween to all!

It feels good to post a painting again. The skies are clear so I can now step outside to take photos of my paintings!

This piece was tough, how does an artist come up with a simple composition? Well, it's easy and difficult. Seems like there has to be a 5 minute rule: find something, place it on the podium, think about it for a minute, make an adjustment and then just go for it. What do you think?

Quick Note: Please visit my website. I've been working hard at updating it. It's not 100% complete but it's close. Let me know what you all think?

I had fun this weekend, I went to Pasadena, California to buy some art supplies at Blick's and do a little urban drawing. Well I ended up with one big drawing of The Pasadena Playhouse! The building was beautiful with morning light so I sat for several hours. I do have to return to this location and make a painting, perhaps next weekend. This drawing is huge, 18" x 24"! Took me about 5 hours.

Redlands pick up.

Hello Friends and family! I'm back! Adventures, adventures! I went to Van Nuys, California for a one-week Portrait painting workshop with Sean Cheetham. It was awesome, learned a lot and made more good friends. Since the workshop, I've been painting and now have a small collection in my studio, but I haven't been able to photograph any of it, the sky has an orange glow from the California fires and ash and makes my paintings look colorless. So as soon as the sky clears I'll share my paintings with you.

I couldn't take it; I had to go out to draw, so I went to Redlands again and found this nice site. It was fun to draw but I shouldn't have gone out there because my eyes got itchy, I started getting a headache and the sky was really orange. The smell of ash was strong, I probably inhaled a lot of stuff. Anyways, this is what came of it. I'm happy with the piece.

Today I was inspired to paint pumpkins, it's October! Nows the time to paint with the cadmium yellow and cadmium red. I enjoyed painting these two items, I had nice window light from the morning fog. next I'm going to Trader Joe's in Redlands to buy some more pumkins and perhaps do a little landscape drawing :) I hope everyone is doing well! cheers!

Another good day in Redlands. I was commissioned to draw this house with Mini Coop. This was a fun one. Very nice neighborhood, so many cute homes on this block! I've been drawing in with the evening light, the colors have been spectacular hence the reason I need to bring out my paints. I bring my paints with me I just get cold feet, drives me nuts. Anyways, I'm going back tomorrow to finish another drawing, then I have to start painting landscapes. Again, wish me luck. Cheers,

So I was in Redlands, CA again and came across this place while I was sketching yesterdays piece. Redlands, CA is full of awesome urban landscapes. So I created this sketch and I loved it but I still get those feelings that it's missing something, I think it's color. I really need to go out there and stop drawing and start painting. I want to do daily painting but with landscapes, i just need to do it. I'll try for tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Hello Everyone! Friends are starting to subscribe to my blog and so this is starting to come together for me! I am so excited! I will share that in the past I often created painting and they simple hung in my house or ended up in boxes. But now I can share my work with everyone! this makes me want to create better pieces.

So Tuesday I couldn't produce anything, I wiped my canvas clean about 5 time, it was terrible, i felt like i had no skills, so weird! but yesterday was good, I created this piece and I was happy with it, I feel like i might of over worked it so for today's painting I will try to paint with less stroks. I have a lot to learn and I believe I will learn fast and and create great pieces with creating a painting a day. Take good care friends. looking forward to any comments, cheers, BG.

Here's the latest painting I produced yesterday. Now I have to work on posting painting the same day I create it and I have work on taking good photos. I cannot get the richness my paintings have to a digital photos.

I like this piece. First one created in my studio since my trip to Santa Fe. It felt good creating this painting, I simply grabbed a few items from the kitchen counter, set it up in my studio and took my time creating it. I'm looking forward to todays piece. Enjoy!
