New year, end of assignments...

Whoa! More than 2 weeks without a post!

Yeah. It's a new year. End of semester (my college semester starts on July and end on January). For us art major students this means hell! -_- Back on new year's eve I went to a printing service to print my(late) A2 sized assignment, bought tools for exam preparations (which took place at January 5), and on the four first days of this new year I spent my days making product for the exam.

But the result was worth the sacrifice... I achieved an A for this 5 credits class and a 100 (yeah, perfect score, everyone!) for the last exam. The last exam was an exhibition with show reel play made by us students. This means that I haven't had any break since this new year. Not even a day :(

I still have 2 more assignments to finish and an exam coming up on January 16. *sighs*

Anyway I guess I'll just post some of the works I've done this semester. It's my batik studies, the result wasn't OK as I made so many mistakes and I'm not really proud of it, but well, here it is... :)

The original design...

It's a re-composition and modification of 2 traditional batik motifs, Srikaton and Parang Barong Bintang. I took several shapes and made modifications. This one doesn't even look like the original ones anymore :P

I got it colored (with watercolor) :)

Next up, I made a bigger (more than 1x1 m) sketch to be traced on the fabric

And here's the final work...

As you can see there's numerous changes made from the original design.

This was due to limitations (colors available, time, and my skill of course :P, etc)

The upper and lower part was made using printing technique and the main part was made using canting (batik hand painting) technique.

Maybe I'll post some more once I've finished other subjects... I know it's late but oh well... Happy new year everyone!

It's been a while! It's been more than a week since my last post, and it's been days since I'm feeling too lazy to post... I don't know why but everytime I had the chance to post something here lately I always lost my eagerness.

After the concerts I feel very light, but I also lose the spirits to work on things... This semester study period is now over and I'm going to have final exams. The first one will come up in several hours :P

So what's happened last week? Here's a quick list...

I'm not as busy as before and this means more time with my cello :)
I fixed my cello bridge height! I found some info in the net and made some changes with the bridge, I also measured the bridge height and string clearance of the cello in my college orchestra, and adjusted mine to have similar measurements. My cello now is easier to play, now what I want is just to have better strings.
I'm working on my batik assignment. It's pretty hard! One of the hardest subjects I've ever studied in college -_-; I really have to work carefully. I have to be very detailed, and hot wax is pretty dangerous :( It hurts so much when it touches the hand :( I hope I'll be satisfied with my results... I made like 1000000 mistakes when using the canting (the tool used to transfer melted wax on to the fabric). No wonder hand-painted batik are very expensive!
I've started back practicing with my band Brown Bear Avenue :)
I have 2 assignments I'm supposed to hand over 2 weeks ago. -_-
I don't feel high-spirited lately... *sighs* I don't know why but I guess I've been thinking too much about everything lately.
I started composing again! Hopefully I can finish a song next week!
I have lots of new friends... I hang out often with the college orchestra fellows :D
I miss my friends, the ones I seldom meet now... I really want to meet them!

I need some sleep now. It's 1:35 AM in the morning... Lately I'm having a terrible sleeping schedule. I hope I can be more energetic tomorrow...

Our Angklung Concert yesterday was also a success :)

My mom (who watched it) said there were improvements from the previous one.

And there's this solo part I've never played correctly before on rehearsals... I managed to play it perfectly on the concert :P

My friend, Fahrie, the violinist, performed marvelously! We performed Toss The Feathers & Haste to The Wedding... He had lots of new fans, LOL

But there seems to be something that's been bothering me these days...

I don't know if it's because I'm too happy or what, but it seems very hard for me to go to sleep after the concerts. I kept thinking of them... and thinking of many other things...

Now... Back to real life... College days... Assignments... -_-;

We have marvelous team, full audience, great applause, compliments from guests and the college rectorate, big plans for next concerts...

I hope we can get even better and better from time to time :)

Lately I don't have enough time to practice... :( But today I'm going to do my best and practice hard on all the pieces! :) I'm so excited :D

Missing Student Found!

After missing for 10 days, a previously missing student in my college is now found. It turned out that he was kidnapped by 3 men, punched several times, given anesthetic drug, and after becoming unconscious, taken into several different places.

First I heard this info from a friend, and after searching for some news I found more info in a newspaper site. He currently is resting at a hospital. His family are not able to hear more info about the kidnapping because he hasn't talked much yet. However it seems that he's getting healthier now.

The police is yet to find out the motive of the kidnapping.

Finding out about this news, despite he's still in a depressed state I guess we (me & all my friends) are all relieved that he's safe now :)

Where have I been in the past few days?

Last week was pretty tiring. I only had few hours of sleep each day. I had 3 days with only 1 hour of sleep each. =_-;

Everytime I wanted to write here I was always sleepy. But finally now I can write again! :)

I was doing assignments and practicing for the 2 upcoming concerts. Our Orchestra 1st concert tickets are all now sold out! I'm happy with this, but also sad, because about 15 of my friends, including my best friend aren't going to be able to watch it... They were too late for the ticket. :(

I only have 4 days left to practice... I'm going to practice hard! :D

By the way, I' found something I really like to do lately. It's drawing bears with some kind of cell shading technique... The results are similar to game with 3d cel-shading/cartoon rendering... Haha I like it ;)

My mood isn't good by the time I'm writing this so I ended up drawing this sad bear :(

This world is driving me crazy!

I'm so tired with everything... Assignments, responsibilities... :(

I believe everyone has had moments like this before...

When the whole day doesn't go as planned, and too many unwanted things happen....

I even fought with my mom over a wireless modem. We only have one modem to be used to connect to the internet, and when we bought it my mom promised me that she'll never use it when I want to use them.

Today after I came home from angklung rehearsal I wanted to use the modem, but my mom was still using it. She said I can use it after maghrib (around 6PM). So I waited for about an hour and a half. It was 6.30 when I wanted to take the modem. But my mom was still using it and when I said I'm going to use it she got angry and I got yelled at.

And winter came!

For the last few weeks I've been starting to get bored with my winamp playlist. Duh, there's like about 17000 items in my winamp, audio library: it's 38.5 GB of music everyone. But it seems that there's nothing from there I wanna hear right now...

Classical, techno, JPOP, game, OSTs... They just don't fit my ears right now.

So I started asking for suggestions to my friends. They gave me nice reccomendations, new artists, albums and musicians. But then again those music still don't feel OK. They're good, but it's just not right for me at the moment.

So then I recalled something.

What about Enya?

Yeah. I've been listening to her music since I was still in junior high. The first time I fell in love with her music was when I was in 4th grade of elementary... Back then my school had relaxation sessions for every class, and my teacher played Enya's song "To Go Beyond" on the cassette tape. I liked it right away, and asked my teacher what the title of the song was. She told me the title but didn't tell the artist.

Years after, when I was on junior high, I found Enya's album Paint The Sky With Stars and bought it. I never knew anything about Enya before. The cassette cover was just interesting to so I bought it. I happened to like it very much, and I collected her albums right after that. Then I found out that To Go Beyond was a song in her first album. I knew I really liked it. I never forgot about it even after about 4 years, and I was just about 8 or 9 years old when I heard the song.

I became a great fan of Enya. I spend most of my junior high years with her music, until I stopped listening to her music when I was on 2nd year of high school. Cassettes became obsolete back then and CDs were replacing them... I only had her cassettes so I never listened to Enya anymore.

But just today I remembered Enya again. I googled and found out right away that she just launched a new album!

I got it right away, and just as expected from Enya, I really love this new album, And Winter Came... though there's no winter in my country :)

GAPENSI National Conference

Hi everyone! After we've been busy practicing & rehearsing for several days, yesterday ITB Student Orchestra (ISO) & ITB Student Choir (PSM ITB) performed at GAPENSI 12th National Conference... I played the flute, it was fun, it's my 1st experience playing in an orchestra with choirs outside my campus. The practice & rehearsals were fun, we had lots of laugh and everyone was nice - we took lots of photos everyday, also on the day we performed :D

The conference was held at Hyatt hotel. We went there using a bus (I don't know where it came from; it has a "Cicaheum - Cibereum" sign on the front window). I'm the one in the far back :P

This is the performance! As you can see the choristers were wearing different traditional costumes from all different cultures in Indonesia. They were beautiful. We performed a rearranged and orchestrated version of "Zamrud Khatulistiwa" (literally translated as "The Equator's Emerald", a nickname given to our country for its wide forest area). The lyrics are beautiful, I really like them. It shows how rich our nature and cultures are :)

Btw, I was behind the right flags :P

The next day I got sick :( I skipped my studio class and decided to work on assignments in my bedroom :(

Practice! Practice!

Yeah... Here in my college (Bandung Institute of Technology) we have around 70 students organizations we call UKM - Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa - or Student Activities Units (students often just call them"unit") - consisting of various types - art & culture, sport, hobbies, and many others.

Just 2 of those many units are Keluarga Paduan Angklung (KPA ITB), ITB's angklung ensemble, oficially founded around 35 years ago, and ITB Student Orchestra (ISO), a relatively new unit, founded in 2004.

I joined KPA right after I started to study in ITB. I was active in my highschool angklung ensemble, and soon after that I was appointed conductor and given task to lead rehearsals, and also to make new arrangements. 2006 and 2007 are super busy years for KPA - we, who consist of students who majors in science, technics, design and art (ITB has no music faculty) - had to practice almost everyday. Even one time we had to perform 11 times in 1 month. It was fun, but also very tiring! I stopped attending KPA for a while around October 2007 and started to go there again this semester.

I joined ISO several month ago. I wanted to enlist in the same time I joined KPA, but ISO weren't accepting piano players in 2006. The other instrument I was able to play was just violin, and my skill were not good enough, so I couldn't join that time. Now I'm playing the flute (and just started playing cello :D), and my first ISO performance was with new members 2 months ago, it was fun, since this was my first time playing in an orchestra. Even though none of us are professional musicians (and ITB doesn't have a music faculty - most of ISO members are violinist, some are violist and cellist, also guitarist - instruments other than strings are very rare - we don't have woodwind (except flute, the instrument I'm playing there) and brass players, no timpani, and just some percussion), many ISO members are very good players. Some are exceptional violinists and pianists.

ISO is going to perform at the MUNAS GAPENSI soon, a national event held by GAPENSI (some kind of construction enterpreneurs association, I don't know much about them) and I'm going to perform too :D We're going to perform with ITB Student Choir (one of the oldest unit in ITB). This event is going to be attended by the vice president of Indonesia... I hope we can do our best :D

Recently, both KPA and ISO members are very busy. We both are preparing a big event. A concert in December!

KPA holds angklung festival and concert every 2 years. Last year was the 11th festival, and this year's going to be the biennial concert (I don't remember how many times KPA has held concerts before :P).

ISO, as a new unit, is finally going to have its 1st concert! :)

I was asked to arrange some of KPA's music in the early months this year, and appointed to be the conductor of some songs (yes in KPA concerts usually we have more than one conductor).

And I'm also going to play the flute in the ISO concert.

However one surprising thing is that...

KPA concert is going to be held at December 6th.

And ISO concert is December 5th.

Right one week before the final exams.

I'm going to be sooooooooooooooooooo busy!

But since I'm enjoying both activities, I'm just happy (even though sometimes I feel too tired)

KPA's rehearsal room is side by side with ISO's, and both rehearsals now are scheduled at 5PM - around 8PM everyday... yeah since I'm involved in both I have to attend both :P

In the end all this means lots of practice...

More practice, practice, and practice! :D

Mission Impossible!

Ah! Those old times... This video is more than 1 year old (well it isn't that old) but I really like this performance. Yeah we played Mission Impossible Theme with angklung. I was the conductor :D

One thing is that I'm seeing faces of old friends I rarely see now, they are probably pretty busy and don't attend our angklung ensemble rehearsals anymore.
