In 1993, as the FCC was still unable to make a choice among the four companies that submitted proposals for HDTV, it finally decided to create what's now known as a Grand Alliance among these companies: AT&T, GI, MIT, Philips, and Sanroff, Thomson, and Zenith. The remainder of the year was spent in establishing features and formulating standards for the proposed system. In 1994, HDTV had been successfully built and scheduled for testing for the next year.

I bought this television at best buy a few weeks ago, and I am incredibly happy with it. As stated by other reviewers, this is a SOLID entry level hdtv with only minor drawbacks.

Picture Quality: is GREAT. Those with INCREDIBLY picky eyes will be the ones that sit there and analyze each pixel, but the bottom line is this is a 1080p television and the blu-rays and video games I play through my PS3 (playstation 3) look fantastic. Absolutely can't beat the quality for the price!!

Sound Quality: this is where the tv gets shaky. the sound isn't great, just average. A different reviewer said that flat televisions don't become flat by getting large speakers, very true. you'll want to buy some sort of speaker system to go with the television to get that true theater experience. PERSONALLY, I just use the tv in my 10x12 room so the sound is adequate for me, but i'm still thinking of getting speakers.

Features: the tv has great black levels and colors. you will want to do alot of tweeking right out of the box because all of the factory levels are set so high. Once you get the tv to a good spot, just sit back and enjoy looking at all the cracks and crevices on people's faces. there are some features that I don't think do much, like "game mode" specifically, but they are nice to have.

OVERALL: If this is your first foray into the HDTV world, like it was for me, I would HIGHLY recommend this television. This is especially recommended for those of us on a budget, but wanting to make the move to HD.

I bought this TV as a second 1080p TV for my home. I am using it in my living area. The viewing angles on the TV are very impressive, I am often viewing from a tight angle and fairly far away. I am also using the built in tuner to receive the HD content, this is working quite well. The lack of 120Hz or 240Hz has not been an issue for the day to day news and TV programs we are watching.
Really the only negative thing about the TV is the start-up time. From time to time it seems to take longer to start-up. Other than that aspect, and a slightly shiner finish than I might like, no complaints so far.

Purchased this TV for $600. It was the best high dollar value purchase I made in quite some time. Although it is my family's first HDTV, the quality and value of it cannot be denied. As others have pointed out, the colors on the TV gravitate towards the warm/red side, but is easily remedied by the easy to use menu picture settings. One excellent feature of this tv is its Clear QAM tuner, while a standard on most LCDs these days, this particular QAM tuner worked quite well with my area's cable service. The channels are crisp and clear without having to pay for an extra HD service plan. This works out great since I can live with watching HD network channels and use my PS3 for movies etc.

To sum the whole experience up: Once we unpacked and set it up (easily), we were all converted to the HD era. Now we are looking to purchase another larger screen to replace our existing 15 year old 60" projection tv.

If you are, like I was, looking for a 40"-42" flat screen television for a secondary room (bedroom/den) then this Toshiba is worthy of consideration. The picture quality is very good, its digital tuner is sensitive (ie, brings in lots of stations), and its priced very competitively. My only complaints are:

- you will need to fiddle plenty with the color controls to get something that looks decent. Out of the box I found flesh tones looked very orange-y.
- the audio is fairly weak. Hooking the system up to a stereo/av receiver is almost a necessity.

So when price is considered this Toshiba unit is very good. Take price out of the equation and it is only fair/good. Buying this for a secondary room makes perfect sense.

The picture is pretty good, the sound not so good get some speakers it will sound better, really good picture with video games my Xbox 360 looks really good when used with the game mode setting. Like i said good for the price i'm happy with it.

Great Entry Level HD TV

I've had this TV for three weeks and I'm happy with the quality. I had a relatively small living room so I needed a smaller TV and this model works perfectly. It displays all the HD channels well. Compared to a $3000 Sony I can tell a slight difference but it's marginal. At $700 level you can't really complain.

As other reviews have pointed out the sound isn't impressive, but it works for my small room. If you're looking for something louder you'll have to hook it up to a system.

Overall I'm really happy with the TV.

Excellent TV for today's multi-HD electronics

I purchased this TV online with a discount coupon code from Amazon.com, and was hesitant about purchasing a new TV online, but I must say, the experience has been nothing but bliss. The TV was hand-delivered by a contracted company from Amazon, and the price was well worth what I paid compared to buying it at a Best Buy or other public electronics store (no tax, free shipping, points on my Amazon card). I'm not going to bother getting into specifics, but I am giving this review based on what I thought were the TV's positive attributes (and very few negatives). This TV is my main unit in my apartment, and I have a HD antenna attached (flawlessly integrates with the TV's tuner), a Playstation 3, a HD-DVD player and HD Cable Television attached to it. The TV has an optional side HDMI input (on the right side of the TV) that I use to attach to my laptop's HDMI output to stream online movies, etc. The contrast ratio is excellent, with a 70,000:1 ratio, and the depth of black is excellent on the television. What I also liked was the fact that the TV is Energy Star efficient, and you can adjust the rate of power conservation (low, medium, high). Just note that the more energy you save (on high), the darker the TV's picture gets.

Positives:
1. Full 1080p resolution
2. 4 HDMI's (3 in the back, 1 on the right side of the TV)
3. USB input (for pictures, audio, etc on a flash drive) this input is located on the right side of the TV
4. Energy Star efficient
5. Game mode to preserve the TV's picture
6. Easy to use interface

Negatives:
1. The Red "Touch of Color" border isn't really noticeable unless you have the TV in a very bright room (which I wouldn't recommend). This is purely a cosmetic concern, not a functional one.
2. No DVI input for a laptop computer (but it does have a side HDMI input and an analog laptop input). This is not really a negative, but just something I noticed.

This is the second Samsung LCD 40 inch 1080p television I have purchased. This purchase was a gift for my daughter's family so I wanted it to be perfect... and it is! The picture is astonishing and watching the football games on Sunday is like having the perfect seat in the stadium! Movies (Blu-ray) and video games seem to come to life with color, depth, and clarity. I think the picture is so remarkable because of the true black color within the LCD. I seldom write reviews; however, while I feel the picture and the price of this Samsung is perfect, it was the delivery by Amazon which made me write the review. I was very hesitant about this purchase because I was worried about the LCD being delivered and damaged by freight. But everything about the delivery was, also, perfect. The company contact me three time via phone to give me status updates and confirm a time for delivery. They showed up within a few minutes of the arranged time, unloaded the LCD, brought it into my home, unboxed it, then turned it on to check if everything was working properly! Like I said it was perfect and completely eased my concerns about making this type of purchase via Amazon. My family and I set the LCD up in my daughter's home in less than ten minutes and were watching the HD NFL Football game truly amazed at how great the picture and sound was. Beautiful, Feature Rich and Future Proof

I returned the 40A630 that I bought last month because of one dead pixel, and I replaced it with this spanking new model (date first available at Amazon on March 9th). This LCD TV is really beautiful - the "Red Touch of Color" is not quite subtle but I'm sure you'll like it as much as I do (it will match whatever furniture you have). The picture quality of this model (100,000:1 contrast ratio) is quite stunning compared to the 40A630 (40,000:1) that I returned.

This TV offers the newly introduced Internet@TV. Currently, only Samsung B series has this feature, other manufacturers will incorporate this feature in their future models. This feature is better than the first generation Infolink (RSS feed) that's offered by the A series. You can actually add all sorts of TV widgets, which in the next couple of months will include some of the big online content providers (NY Times, Netflix, eBay, Twitter, Google, etc). Currenly, only Yahoo widgets are available (news, weather, Flickr, finance). You can connect your TV to the internet via ethernet, or you can plug Samsung's Wireless USB adaptor (sold separately) in one of the 2 USB ports.

Other notable features:
a) 2 USB 2.0 slots - I use one slot for the included flash drive which contains the TV manual, and the other slot for my 8GB flash containing pictures, music and video.
b) Content Library - Intenal flash with preloaded content like cooking recipes, artwork screensavers, games, and pre-school children contents. You can download more contents from the internet. I don't find this feature interesting. I tried it twice during the first week, and I haven't explored it again since.
c) Swivel base - I think Samsung is the only brand that offers this feature, which I find really useful.
d) Firmware upgrade via direct internet connection.

Get this TV, you won't regret it. Your friends will be envious if you tell them about the great features of this TV, which are not yet available in LCD TVs prior to March 2009.

I bought this from Electronics Expo, one of the most reliable merchants of Amazon. The company is located in New Jersey -- a) quick delivery because I live in New York City, and b) no sales tax because I live in New York.

Capable of Life Like Imagery

If you've been researching diligently to find the best value/price HDTV, then this Samsung should be your leading candidate. I have it 3 days now. I haven't even tweaked the calibration as yet except to lower the backlight a couple of notches from 8 to 6. I am especially looking forward to using it's Internet capability feature so I can cut out the hassle of the video store or dealing with Netflix DVDs via the mail. Just selecting via Netflix or Amazon and streaming it right into my living room sounds like a solution I am really going to love. The picture is just magnificent. I just watched some of Lord of the Rings on Turner HDTV and it looked better then when I saw it in the theatre. The Time Warner Cable guy who rigged up my HDTV box told me they only broadcast in 1080i, which is not nearly as crisp as what 1080p is capable of, so I guess I will have to wait to find out the true potential of this fine TV, but even at 1080i the picture seems hard to beat. The images had a true 3D quality. I can't find anything to criticize with the picture's precision in terms of clarity, colors and overall definition. As for the sound quality, I'm not into surround sound, so all I can say about that is that I hear everything just fine with the sound set at about 1/3 of its capability. It was a bit over my budget but I'm glad I paid the extra money for this set. It also looks great in my living room; modern and sleek. The white glove delivery from Amazon was, in my case, flawless.

You have to get one of these! We received our unit yesterday afternoon and was watching HD within 5 - 10 minutes. Setup is very easy (CEVA set up TV) and after connecting HDMI cables, you're good to go. Color, picture, clarity, detail - absolutely amazing!!

No motion blur, no jerkiness or fuzziness, no broken frame appearance. Glare does not appear to b an issue as we have one end of our room in 70% glass. SO far, on a sunny day, no problem.

The "B" model is physically different than the "A" model. The frame has a slight Vee at the bottom of the unit and the base is now rectangular with a 2 inch clear post. The TOC red is nice - sort of dresses up the unit.

We had never seen one of the models, so made the purchase cold. My wife and I cann0t be more pleased with the buy. We sat, almost open mouthed last night watching a movie. I have never seen her impressed over a TV set, until now.

CEVA kept my unit in Sacramento, Ca. for 5 days before delivery. They did deliver before the window of time closed on the stated delivery date. However, they noted, as in the prior review, that I had been contacted for delivery. I had not, so had to get thier info to make contact and arrange delivery. The delivery team did an excellent job, set he whole thing up for me and made sure I was satisfied.

Blu-ray (Samsung P-1500) works great and "Anynet" feature works great. I have not had to touch one control on the tv for any adjustment. Speakers are fine, unless you are an audiophile, or want movie theater sound effects.

Excellent TV and highly recommended!

I'm happy to be the first to rate this wonderful LCD. I'll be short and to the point, and maybe come back and supplement this review after a few more weeks of use.

Aesthetically, the TV is clean and elegant. Love the touch of red. Love the crystal base. Love the fact that it swivels. It's a beautiful piece of equipment, and looks a good bit more modern than the more curvilinear A model. I'm very happy I waited for this one.

Set up was a snap. Took me about 2 minutes to connect the base. It took longer to remove the stickers. The manual is on a little USB drive that plugs in the side of the TV, but I haven't bothered with it yet.

The picture is stunning, right out of the box. Absolutely beautiful. Only adjustment I made was to turn the brightness down slightly, as I have a very dark TV room.

The on-screen graphics and menus are both intuitive and elegantly designed. I hate when the industrial design is carefully considered, and the on-screen UI is forgotten. That didn't happen here. Both are wonderful.

I somewhat skeptically connected my camera card reader to one of the USB plugs on the side, and inserted a memory card from my father's camera. He'd hoped to show us pictures, but didn't have a plan for how. Perfect timing, as the TV had arrived that day. The TV recognized the card, and very quickly we were watching pictures and video in high res on our new TV. Fantastic.

Less than perfect: the sound. Actually, it's a bit of joke. But, that doesn't effect my rating because I don't feel that the internal speakers are really meant to be used w/ a TV like this. I'm using a 5 channel surround system, but before I hooked it up, I heard the speakers. It makes sense that they wouldn't sound good since you can't even see them.

Also less than perfect was the delivery process via this company, CEVA/Eagle. Note that they claimed to have contacted me via email to set up delivery, but I never rec'd anything. They didn't call. So, I had to google them and call them. Plan for this! Stay on top of them. The driver called me no less than 4 times during the day, each time making up some goofy excuse for being even later. I think he was watching the NCAA tournament at a bar somewhere. But, in the end, it arrived 1 day late, and in perfect condition. So, I don't care. And, I can't take away a star from the TV due to the delivery service. I just think Amazon needs to communicate the process better with it's customers and make sure that CEVA does a better job too.

Anyway, Amazon's price is great, the TV is fabulous. Enjoy!

The delivery of my Samsung LN40B650 was excellent (much sooner than expected), and the cost of this product was more than reasonable. Thus far, I'm very happy with my purchase. The TV has great features (e.g., 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 4ms response time, 120Hz auto-motion plus, and wireless DLNA capabilities). The design is elegant and quite appealing, but most of all, the TV's outstanding performance is what I like the most.... The picture quality is phenomenal; it's as if I am watching a live event through a wide-open window. The TV's well-arranged and consumer-friendly remote control unit allows for all the buttons on the remote to become illuminated, if needed. I highly recommend this HDTV, and am glad I bought it from Amazon.com.

Our new Samsung LN40B550 We love it and have absolutely no complaints about it. I don't think we could have done any better for our money. The reviews were good and the price was right. If it has red touch color I sure don't notice it. The delivery was amazing. The guy brought it in, set it up and made sure it worked.

I had been researching different TV's for a few months but I was always comparing them to the Samsung. Amazon had such a great price and free shipping that I jumped on it. Delivery was great they called to set up a convinient time - the guy unpacked it and put it on my stand for me. It has a great picture and the sound it great to. The saleslady was good and knew the product. The delivery man was on time, courteous, and helpful. The picture is brilliant. TV like it should be! We will shop Amazon from now on. I do wish the TV had two audio out outlets - one for my wireless headphones and one for my DVD - but I use a splitter and all is well. I like the USB for my flash drive pictures.

I'll never get to the Bering Sea, but I feel like I was there watching Deadliest Catch on this set.

Note: I bought this set after my 23 year old 32 inch RCA finally gave up and died.

I have absolutely no complaints. The pictures was beautiful right out of the box. The TV is nice and thin, side view and top-bottom view are great with no noticeable picture fading or distortion that LCDs are known for.

Setup was easy - HDMI into the Verizon set top box. I use component cables for the DVD player. Regular DVD looks good too. I haven't tried blue-ray yet.

Shipper was great - they called and gave a four hour window for delivery which was 4 days after ordering the set.

This is a great HDTV at a good price.

After watching the prices on this LCD TV, I jumped on a great price here at Amazon. It was delivered within 3 business days of my ordering. This is the 2nd Large Samsung I've purchased from Amazon and I couldn't be happier. The set up was easy and we hung it on a wall bracket in the bedroom. It is a beautiful unit. The picture and sound are perfect. The only issue that needs to be considered is due to the high gloss finish scratches from cleaning show, even using the included cleaning cloth.

I love the LN40B550 Samsung LCD TV. Picture is great. Remote control is excellent. However, there is one drawback. This TV has no hardware or suggestion to secure the TV to a stand.

I received the TV on the day promised. The shipper was willing to unpack and set it up, however, I elected to do that myself. It was a piece of cake. Basically, plug it in, attach the antenna, and sit back and watch. The controls on the remote were self explanatory. The concern about the white buttons is not really a concern. Reading a few pages of instruction takes away any problems you might have and the buttons are located in much the same place as any other controller I have ever used. The picture is sharp. The screen is large but not so big as to be overwhelming. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the set.

Excellent tv for ANYONE!

My husband and I have the LN52A650 (bought from Amazon in Dec. 08) so when my husband's 87 yr. old uncle decided to upgrade his old crt to hi-def, he called me to start the search for him and get one ordered and delivered.

He already knew he wanted a Samsung ("I just hear they're the best" he says), nothing over 32". I had a hard time convincing him that he needed more than a 32" so getting him to agree to a 40" was quite a challenge. He sits at least 12' from the tv and can afford ANY tv he wants. All that was left was to decide on which model would be right for him.

After we decided on this model, the rest was up to Amazon and they didn't disappoint! Pilot freight delivered our LN52A650 set and they delivered this one to our Uncle. He lives about 50 miles from us so we wanted to be sure his delivery was truly "white glove". Some retailers say white glove when all they offer is to bring it inside and set it down in the room of your choice. Pilot unpacks it, plugs it in, puts batteries in the remote, powers it on and takes away the box.

Our uncle had Charter arrive the same afternoon to hook up his new HD DVR. He is very impressed with the picture. But he is so completely non-tech oriented that we were amazed he even wanted an HDTV. Now if we can just talk him into actually USING the pause and record features of his dvr, he'll be all set! When he first got his cell phone, he would NOT turn it on. No one could call him on it. It took us months to convince him that he was NOT being charged airtime for just turning his cell phone on! What a character!

I bought this tv to replace a 22" Vizio, it is my second HDTV. I just want to say that this TV has risen to all my needs. While it is only 60hz, the motion blur is not terribly visible. The screen has great color and the contrast is just incredible. I used a calibration disk on it and it looks awesome.

If you are looking for a great 40" tv for less $, buy this one. It does not disapoint.

The only reason I gave this tv 4 stars is because nothing is perfect.

Needed a good 1080p LCD without breaking the bank and this one fit the bill...PC powerpoints, Sony PS3 and Blu-Ray discs all look great, and the brightness is good for daytime use in well lit rooms. I like it!

I just purchased a Samsung flat sccreen 1080 model LN40B530 40" this set is an excellent buy for its price range. i am happy with its picture and sound. I have it connected to and old Kenwood surround system and it made it this old system sound like it was new.

I this is my 2nd LCD and the picture quality is amazing! With 60,000:1 contrast ratio, the colors just POP and make everything look realistic. Standard definition picture quality is good(i.e. standard cable), but HD quality is amazing. My last set was a philips and the colors on people's faces didn't quite look realistic but this samsung, everything looks realistic. The picture settings out of the box are pretty good but with a little adjustment(you can find calibration settings online) the PQ is amazing. The only compliant I have with this TV is the sound which is more than acceptable though.

I'm watching baseball on the LN40B530 as I write this, and am blown away by the crisp picture and wonderful colors. The sound is fine as far as my family is concerned. I did make some adjustments to the equalizer, which improved how it sounded right out of the box. I walked past the "tv wall" at a local Best Buy, and to me this TV looked as good as the ones in the $2,000-and-up range. As far as its being "only" 60hz, it looked better than some of the 120hz ones. Maybe if you're a heavy gamer that's an important consideration, but nobody here is. Our previous TV was a Hitachi plasma EDTV that we thought was great, but this is a big improvement. Can't wait to see a blue-ray disc on it. I wonder if the previous reviewer had a defective one. None of their complaints are true of this unit at all.

This is the first lcd tv I have ever owned. When I first bought it I was worried about how I would like it after reading some other complaints. I have owned many tv's and compared to them I can't find anything to say bad about it. I love the picture, sound, and the controls. I might buy another one for another room.

Whne calibrated this TV's data revivals TV's twice its price in this size range.

if you dotn calibrate the tv use the movie setting as its the clesest to what it should be.

can't go wrong getting this and I have not seen any motion artifacts with this tv.

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches.
