Working on a Dream (2009)

Working on a Dream is the 16th studio album by Bruce Springsteen, released on January 27, 2009. It has so far sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

The release of the first two songs prompted The New York Times to proclaim Springsteen as "more hopeful, less bleak" than on his previous album Magic. It saw this go-around of the Springsteen persona manifesting "the voice of an honest striver redeemed by love and hard work". E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt sees Working on a Dream as part of a trilogy with The Rising and Magic: "They make sense together in terms of sound, concept and writing style. The three records have been a projection more toward the pop-rock form – this one more than the other two.

The album's opener, "Outlaw Pete", which many observers felt borrowed a central riff from Kiss's 1979 disco hit "I Was Made for Lovin' You", is over eight minutes, while two others are under three minutes.
Listeners considered it one of Springsteen's most stylistically diverse efforts overall. The album recalls some of Springsteen's earlier efforts, as "The Last Carnival" has been interpreted as a sequel to "Wild Billy's Circus Story" from 1973's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wild,_the_Innocent_%26_the_E_Street_Shuffle" title="The Wild, the Innocent & 1960s production flourishes are omnipresent, including ones derived from Wall of Sound, girl group, British Invasion-era Top 40, Brian Wilson Dylan produced the record under his pseudonym of Jack Frost, which he used for his previous two studio albums, "Love and Theft" and Modern Times. The album is rumored to contain "struggling love songs" and have little similarity to Modern Times.

In a conversation with music journalist Bill Flanagan, published on Bob Dylan's official website, Flanagan suggested a similarity of the new record to the sound of Chess Records and Sun Records, which Dylan acknowledged as an effect of "the way the instruments were played." He said that the genesis of the record was when French film director Olivier Dahan asked him to supply a song for his new road movie, My Own Love Song, and "then the record sort of took its own direction." The song written for the movie is "Life Is Hard."

Dylan is backed on the album by his regular touring band, plus David Hidalgo of Los Lobos and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

"Beyond Here Lies Nothin'" was available as a free download for one day on Monday, March 30, via Dylan's official site.

"I Feel a Change Comin' On" was released for streaming on Monday, April 6th on The Times Online website, as well as the third installment of his interview with Bill Flanagan.

The album was leaked onto the internet in its entirety on April 22, 2009. The album was released in Ireland on October 24, 2008, in the UK and the rest of Europe on October 27, 2008, and in the US on October 28, 2008. The first single from the album was "Take Back the City" which was released on October 10 in Ireland, Germany and Belgium. With a release for the rest of Europe on October 13, 2008 and in France on October 14, 2008. The Song has peaked at #32 on the US Hot Modern Rock Tracks. As well as "Crack the Shutters" has made it to #9 on the iTunes Alternative Songs chart. The album debuted at #2 in the UK with sales of 100,330.

The album was recorded in Hansa Studio in Berlin and Grouse Lodge Studio in Co. Westmeath, Ireland through Summer 2008, with producer Garret "Jacknife" Lee. The album is considerable departure from Snow Patrol's earlier productions. Frontman Gary Lightbody said he wanted to make a record cheerful as compared to their previous albums. Instead of describing a relationship's end, the record was written in perspective of a relationship that is working. The band members took additional lessons before starting the recording. They have described the album as their best to date

Track Listing

All lyrics written by Gary Lightbody. It was released on September 19, 2008 in the Republic of Ireland, Germany, Australia and Belgium, September 22 in the UK and September 23, 2008 in the U.S..

In interviews with the band, it has been said that the next album will "rock harder" and more tracks like "Charmer", "Black Thumbnail" and "Camaro" have been suggested. "We've broadened our musical tastes in the past couple of years and feel we're ready to tackle our southern roots... again" says Jared Followill, the band's bass guitarist.
</sup>

Three tracks from the album have been debuted live, "Crawl", "Sex on Fire" and "Manhattan". Caleb Followill claims that pain relieving drugs, which he took following a fight with his brother Nathan (drummer of the band), greatly enhanced his lyrics. Caleb is quoted as saying the medication caused him to write "the best songs of his career". An example of experimentation is evident in the opening track "Closer", which contains lyrical content pertaining to the life of a vampire.

Track Listing

"Closer" – 3:57

"Crawl" – 4:06

"Sex on Fire" – 3:23

"Use Somebody" – 3:50

"Manhattan" – 3:24

"Revelry" – 3:21

"17" – 3:05

"Notion" – 3:00

"I Want You" – 5:07

"Be Somebody" – 3:47

"Cold Desert" – 5:34

"Frontier City" – 3:37 (bonus track)

DOWNLOAD ALBUM
SING IT

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/BestAlbums/~3/OUGSJK_tqQ0/kings-of-leon-only-bt-night-2008.html" title="Kings Of Leon. The album's title was released on July 31, 2008. The band have completely transformed their look and their new album is said to be also very unexpected. According to international Island Records manager, Jon Turner, the general international feel is of excitement and "Spiralling" is a favourite track of the US company. As of August 26, "Better Than This", "The Lovers Are Losing", "Spiralling" and "Love Is The End" have been broadcast.
The cover for the album was revealed on September 5. Tim Rice-Oxley explained that the imagery of the band are photographs of bigger than life-size sculptures of the band members, made by Korean artist Osang Gwon. Released through Reprise Records on March 9, 1999, the album was heavily influenced lyrically by twentieth century literature, as well as singer Jeff Tweedy's marital problems. Unlike previous albums, Summerteeth was heavily overdubbed in the studio with ProTools. Tweedy and Jay Bennett created most of the album in the studio, a contrast to the band's previous albums, which were rehearsed live and recorded almost at once.

Despite critical acclaim from numerous outlets, including Allmusic, The Chicago Tribune, and The Village Voice, Summerteeth sold approximately 200,000 copies -- a modest number compared to the sales of 1996's Being There. Wilco agreed to remix "Can't stand it" with David Kahne to cater to radio markets, but the single failed to attain substantial airplay.

Track Listing

All lyrics by Jeff Tweedy. It is comprised of two discs: Hvarf contains studio versions of previously unreleased songs (with the exception of "Hafsól", which was released as the b-side of Hoppípolla in 2005), while Heim contains live acoustic versions of songs already released.

The cover images are pinhole polaroid photographs. The Hvarf cover is a handheld image of the microphone stands just before the band arrived to play in the gentle rain. The Heim cover is a 7-minute exposure of the stage at Gamla Borg where Sigur Rós performed an acoustic set for friends and family in April 2007.

The album was released on November 5 in Europe and was released on November 6 in North America. Prior to this release a limited 7" vinyl single of Hljómalind was released on 29 October. The album debut at #23 in UK, #7 on the US independent chart and #83 in Spain selling over 50.000 copies in first week worldwide.

Track Listing

Hvarf The album, which was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village, was released on June 25, 2007 (June 26 in the U.S.), and was Adams' first release since his 2005 album 29, the third of three albums released in that year. The song "Halloweenhead" was #45 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007.

Many of these songs were performed on Adams' recent tour of the United States and Europe. "Off Broadway" first appeared on the bootleg The Suicide Handbook, a compilation of unreleased demo recordings, and was performed at least as early as 2001. "These Girls" previously appeared as "Hey There, Mrs. Lovely" on Adams' unreleased 2000 album Destroyer; the lyrics have been partly rewritten over time, but the original melody is intact.
The album debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200 with Adams highest first-week sales (61,000). As of December 2007, the album has sold over 200,000 copies in the U.S. Furthermore, the album debuted in Ireland, Canada, Belgium, Estonia and Switzerland where Ryan Adams has never had an album chart before. In total, the United World Chart estimated Easy Tiger's two week sales at 134,000 (91,000-43,000).

Track Listing

Songs written by Ryan Adams, Brad Pemberton, Neal Casal and Jon Graboff unless otherwise stated.

"Goodnight Rose" – 3:20

"Two" (Adams and Pemberton) – 2:39

"Everybody Knows" – 2:26

"Halloweenhead" (Adams) – 3:23

"Oh My God, Whatever, Etc." The album yielded two hit singles, the hymn-like title track, as well as the R&B-flavored "Wild Night".

The namesake for the album is a varietal honey produced from the flowers of the tupelo tree found in the Southeastern United States.

The original LP was released in a gatefold sleeve. The cover photograph showed Janet Planet, Morrison's then wife, riding bareback on a horse, with Morrison walking alongside. The gatefold and back cover photographs showed Morrison perched upon the fence of the horse's paddock, with his wife standing to his right and a black-and-white kitten on the fence to his left. It was an album of rural, domestic bliss, although the marriage ended within a few years.

The vocals on the album were always live after rehearsing each song five or six times, according to saxophonist Boots Houston. The only overdubbing consisted of backing vocals and horns.
The January 29, 2008 reissued and remastered version of the album contains an alternative take of "Wild Night" and a reworked cover version of the traditional song, "Down By the Riverside".

Track Listing

All songs by Van Morrison.

Side One

"Wild Night" – 3:33

"(Straight to Your Heart) Like a Cannonball" – 3:43

"Old Old Woodstock" – 4:17

"Starting a New Life" – 2:10

"You're My Woman" – 6:44

Side Two

"Tupelo Honey" – 6:54

"I Wanna Roo You (Scottish Derivative)" – 3:27

"When That Evening Sun Goes Down" – 3:06

"Moonshine Whiskey" – 6:48

                                        DOWNLOAD ALBUM
SING IT

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/BestAlbums/~3/x6Yesw0j9Gs/van-morrison-avalon-sunset-1989.html" title="Van Morrison. The album was completed in 2001, but Reprise Records believed that it would not have crossover pop success and refused to release it. Wilco acquired the rights to the album when they were released from the label.

After their dismissal from Reprise, Wilco offered the entire album for free on their official website. In November 2001, Wilco signed with Nonesuch Records, and the album was officially released on April 23, 2002. It was the first Wilco album with producer Jim O'Rourke and drummer Glenn Kotche, and the last with multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett and drummer Ken Coomer. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was a critical and commercial success, selling over 500,000 copies in the U.S. and topping the Pazz and Jop critics' poll for 2002.

Track Listing

All lyrics by Jeff Tweedy. I'm very proud of On My Way's spontaneity and honesty. I'm especially proud of the song "On My Way". I feel it's one of my best."

The touring band for the album featured John Kent from Radish and Jason Roberts on guitar. On My Way was their first headlining tour in France. Ben Kweller also co-headlined with Death Cab For Cutie and Incubus in the US. Kweller also performed in Japan with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the White Stripes. Ben Kweller (2006)

Ben Kweller is the self-titled third album by Ben Kweller. It was released September 19, 2006 on ATO Records.

For the 9 weeks leading up to the release of the Album Ben Kweller previously took footage of himself and made an internet mini-show called "One Minute Pop Song." Each episode would consist of usually 2-6 minutes.

Topics of the videos were varied. Some of the topics were about a fan who sent in a cover version of a song, talking about laying down the tracks and playing all the instruments on the album, showing a tour of the studio, Ben Kweller rating himself on each instrument, telling a story about Neil Young, and talking about how he learned to play the drums from his father.

On his Myspace website, Ben described the making of the album as "very exciting, emotional and challenging." He explained that since he played all the instruments on the album it "was a big change for me and it produced something really intimate and special. It's such a different way of working but if you can pull it off it makes a very cool and unique sound." He also described a song on the album, "A bonus for me, and you, is I think I might have written my best song while I was in the studio. It's called 'Thirteen'. It's very personal and almost hard for me to listen to."

Track Listing

All songs and instruments by Ben Kweller.

"Run" – 3:07

"Nothing Happening" – 3:53

"Sundress" – 4:06

"I Gotta Move" – 3:10

"Thirteen" – 4:17

"Penny on the Train Track" – 4:28

"I Don't Know Why" – 3:06

"Magic" – 3:08

"Red Eye" – 4:20

"Until I Die" – 4:07

"This Is War" – 2:25

                                        DOWNLOAD ALBUM
SING IT

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/BestAlbums/~3/aWs0Y1XduE0/ben-kweller-ben-kweller-2006.html" title="Ben Kweller.
