Baby carriers date back to thousands of years ago. Before the 1900s, mothers were swaddling babies in bed sheets, and any other type of long cloth in order to stay close to their young ones while handling tasks at hand. Mothers didn’t get time off from work to tend to their young babies and had to come up with an ingenious way to carry them around with them. While the tradition continues in developing countries today, the Western culture is embracing this form of baby wearing and indeed it is commonplace to now see a young baby in a wrap carrier affixed to its mother.

It wasn’t until the 1980s when baby carriers became noticed. Up until this point they weren’t being mass-produced and only rarely would a parent make his own sling to carry the baby.

In 1981 a Hawaiian man named Rayner Garner invented a baby wrap with fabric and two rings. This design caught on and in 1985 the rights to this sling were purchased by Dr. William Sears. He continued with the promotion and the manufacturing of these wraps and they became more popular with every passing year.

The term “babywearing” was a term coined by Dr. Sears that caught on. They are now also known as slings, wraps and carriers.

The baby carrier in today’s world

Nepalese Baby Carrier by Luca Galuzzi

It’s a funny thing that’s taking place. Eastern societies look to the West for upcoming trends and popular movements. Cultures in the East often view Western society with awe and that is the reason why the use of strollers is becoming more common on the Eastern side of the world. On the other hand, Western philosophies are now embracing the use of a baby carrier for the closeness it provides for both the baby and the mother. Strollers are on the rise in the East while baby carriers are on the rise in the west.

Western society is now embracing the baby carrier as a way of helping the mother and baby bond. It is a slow evolution since baby carriers are competing against expensive strollers in a material world. There is not a lot of money to be made in the baby wrap business since it is basically a long strip of material, along with a ring or buckles in some cases. Millions of dollars are passing hands in the baby equipment department, and strollers are being marketed as a needed accessory for all babies.

Looking towards the future

It is simply a matter of education that needs to be passed on to pregnant women and new mothers to help spread the word about baby carriers. Babies need to be close to their mother for as long as possible to help with bonding and to help with their development.

If you’re looking for something to carry your baby in that is comfortable for the both of you, think baby ring slings. These are the most popular baby carriers of all, and for good reason. They are flexible and allow the baby to be carried in almost any position. Plus, they are easy to adjust and put on.

What do they look like?

Baby ring slings are made from fabric and have a large ring attached. The fabric is looped through the ring to support the baby. The great thing about these ring slings for babies is they are made in just about any fabric you can imagine. They come in pretty much any color and are also available in printed fabrics. No matter what your taste and style is, you’re sure to find a baby ring sling that is perfect for you.

Are they suitable for newborns?

Yes. You can use the sling to cradle a newborn, just as it would lie if you held him in your arms, or you can have the baby nestled up against your chest. In either position a newborn will feel your warmth and will feel safe and secure.

Perfect for nursing mothers, baby ring slings can be worn for easy breast-feeding. The baby does not have to be removed for the feeding and the sling can be readjusted afterwards to get the baby in an upright position for burping.

How do they work for older babies?

Baby slings can be used in the cradle position, upright against the tummy, on the back or against the hip. You can play around with the various positions and find the right one that is best for you and your young one.

Do they come in different sizes?

No – these baby slings are one-size-fits-all. You’ll never have to buy another baby carrier if you use a sling. The “tail”, or the amount hanging from the ring, will be longer for a newborn than it will be for an older baby.

Price matters

These carriers for babies are priced right for any parent that is on a budget. Simple slings can be purchased that are easy on the pocketbook, while fancier slings with padding or made of luxurious materials are available for people that can afford a little more. No matter what your budget dictates, these carriers will fit in.

Baby ring slings have become a favorite amongst parents. They are simple to use and comfortable. If you are in the market for a baby carrier and haven’t had the chance to look at ring slings yet, take a look now. Priced right, these are perfect for any parent and baby.

The most popular and in my view the best Baby Ring Sling carrier on the market is the Maya padded Ring sling. It is easy to use, comfortable and extremely stylish.

If you have been looking around at all of the various woven baby wraps, tie ups and ring wraps on the market, you might be finding the whole subject quite confusing. There are so many wraps available for babies! What is the difference between them and which one would be right for both you and your baby? While most of these wraps will do a great job, woven wraps are usually more durable and versatile than their counterparts.

Let’s take a look at their durability first. These baby wraps are machine washable and dry very quickly and are made of a gauze fabric type. Although they are very lightweight, they are a lot more supportive than other types of wraps. They are also very affordable.

Taking a look at their versatility, these woven baby wraps can be worn to cradle the baby, carry him upright against the chest, or carry him on the hip or back. You’ll know which way you prefer carrying your baby once you start using the wrap. If you plan on using it for an extended period of time, you can adjust it to carry the baby in a different position from time to time.

Give your back a break

Not literally, but if you are experiencing back pain or discomfort from another type of baby wrap, sling or carrier, try woven baby wraps. There are a lot more supportive than stretchy wraps or other carriers and are perfect for women with back problems. Even if you don’t have a specific problem with your back, and find that carrying the weight of the baby or toddler is too hard with your current baby carrier, don’t give up on the idea of transporting your baby around with you until you’ve given woven wraps a try. Many women find that they are able to continue carrying their baby with a woven type of wrap since it offers a lot more support. It is common for a mother to switch from a stretchy wrap or other carrier to a woven baby wrap once the baby is older than six months.

These wraps are not bulky at all and should be your first choice if you are worried about getting overheated from carrying your child around. Woven wraps are more lightweight than stretchy ones and the fabric stays cool against the skin.

Instead of having to switch wraps once your baby gets older and gains weight, it would be a good idea to start off with woven baby wraps so that you don’t have to make a change later. This is especially true for women that feel back strain easily or physically suffer from back problems. Woven wraps are one of the most common type of wraps you’ll see around because they offer more support than other styles of carriers and wraps.

As a new mother you may be looking at the various types of stretchy baby wraps and other wraps on the market for carrying your baby. Wraps have become very popular and you’ll see them being used everywhere.

Many mothers consider stretchy baby wraps to be the only type of wrap they would consider for their newborn. They are made of stretch cotton, which allows you to wrap your baby as tightly or as loosely as you want. This gives you more control over the feel and comfort level for you and your baby.

Not every baby is the same. Some want to be tightly held against their mother while others want more space. You’ll be able to tell if your baby feels confined since it will be more fidgety and less relaxed. In this type of situation it is just a matter of loosening the wrap until you find the right comfort zone.

Likewise, you as a mother will have to find out how tight or loose you want to wear the wrap. If you find that you need extra support you can try tightening it a bit. Once you have found the perfect fit for you and your baby you’ll be able to put it on and tie it up perfectly every time.

Babies love them!

Babies love the feeling of being close to their mother, especially newborns. Most mothers find that their babies are more relaxed, enjoy better feedings and are overall happier when they are kept close to the mother for extended periods of time.

Just think about it for a moment. How many times have you seen a baby screaming in a wrap versus babies crying at the top of their lungs in a stroller? Babies, especially newborns, want and need to be with their mother.

Not just for mothers…

Any member of the family or friends can hold your baby with a wrap. If you have to go out for an evening you can leave the wrap with your caregiver. It will make for a smoother night for both the baby and the sitter.

Fathers should also be making use of stretchy baby wraps. They are a fantastic way for a baby and father to bond. You’ll see more men wearing these wraps now too. It has become more socially acceptable for a man to let down his guard and show his softer side – especially when a baby is involved!

Stretchy baby wraps are approximately 5 m long and can hold both newborns and toddlers. If you are new to this world of wraps and don’t know exactly where to begin looking, stretchy wraps are a good start. They are the best choice of wrap for newborns with busy mothers, although they can take some time to learn how to put on properly.

Once you know these details you’ll be able to enjoy the luxury of carrying your baby without worry.

Here are the most important things you need to learn about keeping your baby safe in a baby carrier.

1. Did you buy it used?

If you did, you’ll have to make sure that you find out who the manufacturer is and when it was made. There have been a few recalls on baby carriers in the past and you’ll have to check whether your carrier was one of them. You can get more information on government sites about these recalls and whether they apply to the carrier you are currently using. If you have any doubt at all about it, call up the manufacturer to get more details. If you haven’t purchased one yet, you are better off buying a new one than taking a chance on something used.

2. Inspect your carrier regularly

One of the biggest causes of baby injuries from a carrier is due to it being worn out. You need to check the one you are using frequently to make sure it doesn’t show any signs of wear and tear. If it does, it’s time to replace it!

3. Make sure you are using it properly

Any baby sling, carrier or wrap should come with a complete set of instructions. You’ll have to take the time to read through them thoroughly to a full understanding. Again, if there is anything that you can’t grasp in the literature, call the manufacturer for clarification.

One of the things that should be mentioned in the instruction manual is to always have the baby in a position where you can see it’s nose and mouth, to make sure that are free of obstructions. A baby can smother in a baby carrier if it doesn’t have enough ventilation.

With regular inspections and proper use a baby carrier is a connection between you and your baby that is truly invaluable. Nothing can compare to the joy and intimacy that a baby wrap, sling or carrier can bring. They are much easier to use than a heavy stroller and some child experts believe that a baby carried in such a way has a better chance of proper development.

Baby carrier covers can help make nursing time or sleeping more comfortable for your baby. Not only do the best baby carrier covers keep your baby snug and warm, but they also help them feel more secure being close to you. Alaskan mom approved, you can be sure that baby carrier covers are your everyday answer to keeping your child warm in the elements.

Protection is the second main point that should be addressed. Your baby needs to be protected from bumps and abrasions that could happen in your day to day activities. Baby carrier covers provide this protection and ensure your baby stays safe.

You should look for a baby carrier cover that is made from quality materials, as there would be nothing worse than having your baby fall due to improper material construction. It makes more sense to purchase a quality baby carrier cover that isn’t going to fall apart under normal conditions. The right baby carrier cover can leave you with years of use and a guarantee that you’ll get your money’s worth.

A baby carrier cover is so simple yet effective. Many have adjustment settings that allow you to custom fit the cover to your babies needs. Does your baby like a tight knit cover or a loosely fitting and slightly cooler arrangement? Being able to change this on the fly is just another one of the many reasons to buy a baby carrier cover with all the bells and whistles.

You can find them in many different styles, fabric patterns, and colors. Choosing the one that is right for you should be a matter of your baby’s preference and your personal liking. Zebra styles, military designs, baby animals, you name it they make a baby carrier cover that will appeal to your sense of style.

If you are a Dad, chances are you’ve been looking for a way to get closer to your baby so that you can develop a strong relationship. Baby carrier covers allow your child to associate you with warmth and comfort instead of the cold. Take into consideration your baby’s need for love and affection.

One of the most popular baby carrier covers is made with high quality Polartec fleece. When the weather gets rough, whether it be wind, rain, or snow, you’ll be able to keep your child protected from the elements. Prices usually range from $25-$50 for quality baby carrier covers that won’t leave your baby stranded when it comes to warmth and comfort.

When talking about high quality baby carrier covers, one size fits all mostly, although you may be able to find certain baby carrier covers that fit your baby better than others. It’s simply a matter of trial and error. If you’re really concerned and want to find the best baby carrier covers for your child, then you can always look at the reviews at Amazon.com, they should have some answers for you.
It’s only normal for babies to let out a cry whenever they need something. In fact, a study conducted by the University of London revealed that there isn’t any significant relationship between constant crying and ineffective parenting. As maintained by numerous “my first baby” guidebooks, crying is simply a baby’s language.

Decoding The Language
In the beginning, crying is a baby’s primary means of conveying feelings of hunger, distress, exhaustion, loneliness, and so on. But as your little one grows, he (or she) will become skilled at other ways of communicating his (or her) needs and emotions. These additional abilities typically include body language, facial expressions and, in due course, speech.
Soothing The Cries
Before your baby develops the ability to communicate verbally, you need to make use of ways to deal with his (or her) incessant cries. Here are a number of valuable tips to help you quiet down the sobs.
1) Learn the language
By gaining knowledge of pre-cry warning signs-such as fidgeting, agitated facial expressions, little frowns, flailing arms, breathing changes and the like-you will be more capable of knowing whether your baby is hungry, tired, frightened or overwhelmed. And by acting in response to the hints, you have a greater chance of forestalling a full-scale crying fit.
2) Feed your baby
Little tummies are not capable of holding an amount of food that can last for several hours. In view of this, you ought to recognize the need to provide your baby with small yet frequent feedings. When it comes to appetite, babies usually experience an increasing desire for food that complements the growth spurts. So be sure to feed your little one accordingly so as to avert another crying fit.

3) Respond promptly
A lot of people possess a flawed idea that if a parent responds to a crying baby at once, he or she is actually spoiling the little one. The truth of the matter is that the more you delay the response, the more distressed your baby becomes. Before long he or she will not even remember what triggered the crying fit in the first place. The sobs will simply go on and on, and the baby will become much more difficult to quiet down.
If you’re breastfeeding, try to respond promptly to your little one’s hunger signs. A baby that is left to build up a full-scale cry will have a less organized suck and may experience latching difficulties. At times, he (or she) will merely suck for a while and then doze off due to exhaustion.
4) Carry your baby around
Studies have shown that carrying babies around may preclude crying. In order to reduce the stress of constantly doing so, you can look for the best baby carrier for you to carry your little one.
5) Make use of relaxing sounds
Singing a lullaby or playing some mellow classical music can be useful tools in calming your baby down.
The melodies of Beethoven, Brahms and Back are included in the long list of recommended records.
Those were just some of the effective ways to quiet down a baby. You may come across other practical techniques by simply skimming through various “my first baby” books or by surfing the Internet.

The reason for the hazard seems to be the simple omission of bolts that attach the frame to the main carrier when they were sent for sale. The lack of bolts represents a real danger of the carrier falling.

To be fair, the manufacturer of the LittleLife Discoverer Child Carrier is cooperating completely with the recall and is hoping to get every one of the carriers back.

To check if you have one of the defective carriers, check to see if it has, as well as the “LittleLife” logo on the back, the number LS55060 printed on a tab underneath the care label. The carriers are all green and grey with a folding black metal frame at the back to allow it to stand.

There have been no reported injuries with the carrier so far, but you should stop using the carrier and check to make sure you have two bolts on each side of the carrier where the frame attaches to the main body.

If you are unsure or want more information then you should visit the Consumer Product Safety website www.cpsc.gov

This happens rarely and baby carriers are usually one of the safest ways to move your child from A to B and the most fun. When there are mishaps in manufacturing though, there is not much you can do.

Don’t let it put you off. Keep on baby wearing!

A few people have asked me why I only give modern soft structured baby carriers a mention in my reviews of the best carriers on the market and miss out some of the other popular styles. It’s a fair question; after all there are many fantastic alternatives out there such as the Mei Tai, the stretchy style wraps, woven wraps, ring slings and many others that do not make it into the reckoning for my top choices. There is a good reason for this so if you bear with me and hear me out I will explain why.
The simple answer is that I wanted to do a list of the very best baby carriers that you can buy. I wanted to do the desert island discs of baby carriers – the desert island baby carriers if you will. If you don’t know what I mean by this (where have you been?) I mean that if a parent was stranded on a desert island and could only take one baby carrier with him, which baby carrier would it be?
This of course means that said baby carrier must be versatile, strong, comfortable, and versatile (did I say that already?) Versatility is important because it has to be useful in all situations and for all baby sizes. You can’t nip out and buy a new one once your baby gets too big if the nearest store is a coconut tree.
So let’s see where some of the other baby carriers might fall down when it comes to being the desert island baby carrier:
The Stretchy wrap
Don’t get me wrong, I think stretchy wraps are awesome. If you are not sure what I mean by stretchy wraps, I am talking about the lengths of slightly elasticated fabrics that you wrap around to create a cocoon of loveliness around you and your baby. I like stretchy wraps. I think the Moby wrap is fantastic. The problem is in the name: They’re stretchy! This is great when your little one is little as it fits snuggly around his little body. Imagine what happens when your baby becomes not little. What happens if a bigger, heavier, baby is put in a stretchy wrap? That’s right. Stretchy is not the friend of the larger baby. This is not good for the desert island parent.
The Woven Wrap
Woven wraps are great. They are strong, durable and do not stretch. So what could possibly be wrong with the woven wrap? I hear you cry. Well for one they can be a major pain to set up. It does take a certain amount of skill and experience to be able to tie a woven wrap. I’m not saying that you need to be the Einstein of baby wrapping – just Einstein’s assistant. This isn’t the only downfall of woven wraps though. If it were it wouldn’t be much of a downfall on a desert island. After all the one thing you have got a lot of on a desert island is time and learning how to tie a baby wrap would be a cinch if it were between learning that or learning to spear jellyfish. No, the main problem with woven wraps (which is also a problem with stretchy wraps, but they never really get this far thanks to their stretchiness) is where the weight is carried. In all basic fabric wraps (and some carriers – nod to you Baby Bjorn) the weight of the child is supported by the shoulders and upper back. This is fine when the baby is small, but once the little one reaches less than little proportions, your back and shoulders are going to tell you. These types of carriers are hell for your back, neck, and shoulders once the baby reaches a certain size and therefore also not the best choices for that desert island baby carrier.
Ring Slings and pouches
Never really been a huge fan of ring slings or baby pouches but that’s not the point. The reason ring slings don’t make it on a desert island is basically the same reason that woven wraps don’t make it: Great for small babies, but kind of fall down when it comes to bigger babies.
The Mei Tai
Don’t get me wrong Mei Tais are great and are almost desert island baby carrier contenders. Some people may argue that they certainly are contender. As Mei Tais have a very partisan following and I am not going to try and upset a few thousand moms there is a good chance that I will add a review of a Mei Tai later on and the Baby Hawk is looking a distinct possibility. Some Mei Tais of course are lacking in the strap padding department, and can be uncomfortable for bigger babies, but this may not always be the case. If you know of a Mei Tai that has padded straps and is comfortable for all ages, please leave a comment and let me know.
So as you can see, if you happen to find yourself trapped on a desert island with just you and your baby and for some strange reason you get a choice of which carrier you want to have with you, then you would be best served choosing a good solid baby carrier with hip supporting belt. Pretty much like the ones I am reviewing. Imagine that.
Actually come to think of it, would you really need a baby carrier on a desert island?

Well there is a really simple answer to that and that is that it doesn’t really matter how you use it as long as it is safe and your child is within kissing range.

What do I mean by kissing range? Well exactly how it sounds – if you can kiss your baby while he is in the carrier then you have got it right. This doesn’t mean of course that if you can’t reach your young one with a big smacka that you are going to hell, it simply means that you will be missing the main point of a baby carrier – contact.

A baby carrier is simply the best way to take your baby from point A to point B because you are in constant contact with him. You can feel him and he can feel you. He can feel your heart through the carrier which gives him the comforting throw back to the womb.

Being able to kiss your baby simply mean that he is close enough to feel protected and secure and you both get the benefit of bonding while you are on the go or doing whatever it is that you need to get done.

This isn’t really a hard and fast rule, but it is a good guideline to get the most out of your baby carrier.

I mean, who doesn’t love kissing their baby anyway?
