I was walking down the street to catch the bus to work when I noticed a music flyer pinned to a telephone pole. I’ve been in a band for many years and appreciate a good advertisement strategy, just in case I can use it for future performance flyers for us. As I walked closer, I noticed a strange black and white square situated prominently on the bottom left corner; I figured it was just the band’s symbol or an interesting decoration. But, as I focused on the square, it had a checkerboard design to it. I realized I had seen this shape before on magazine pages and T-shirts. It was a QR code.

What a unique idea, I thought. QR codes, or quick response codes, are meant to be scanned with today’s smartphones that have a camera, like an Iphone or Android. I pulled out my smartphone gadget and downloaded a QR scanner application right there off of my mobile broadband. One fast click of my camera and this band’s song began playing through the phone’s speakers with a duplicate flyer blazing from my touch screen. Maybe I should go check out this band’s performance.

(Courtesy of iFaheem)

A few weeks later, my band scheduled a new performance. Naturally, I was in charge of the flyers. I was very impressed with the flyer I saw previously and created my own QR code. We had a song that we were truly excited about and had the QR code encoded to play it; the code also pulled up a copy of the flyer with the address and website of the performance venue. Our band was sure to be a hit since fans could save the information from the QR code in their phones and reference it later. We could possibly end up selling more music at the performance as a result of the extra band exposure. I’ve noticed that many fans feel more of a personal connection with a band when they feel involved with exclusive content, just like our unreleased song that erupts out of the phone after scanning the code.

Before I created my own QR code, I had to find a website that would formulate the music and flyer data. Luckily, there are a number of different companies that will take your information and convert it into that simple checkerboard square that works on mobile broadband. Some businesses even do it for free; it just depends on the quantity of content that the square needs to hold. Kaywa was successful at creating my square.

At the performance, I was pleased to see that a lot of new fans showed up out of curiosity. As a walked around the crowd after the performance, I mingled with a few new faces. I asked them where they had heard about us since I was wondering how effective the flyer and QR code turned out. As it turns out, most of the new people were wanting to try out their new scanning code applications and were looking for random codes. Our band’s flyers were everywhere; the code let people listen to our new song and where to find us. Just what I was looking for.

After the performance, I researched QR codes a bit further. It turns out that they can also hold a website link in the form of a URL shortener, like bit.ly. My band and I have been trying to finish our website. As soon as we add all the finishing touches, I am going to create another QR code for our website. Between our flyer and music code matched with the website QR code, the band is going to soar into the big time.

It is really rather simple to set up an advertisement on Facebook. When you are ready to get started, you can use these tips and tricks to get you from start to finish in no time!

Know your Audience and your Business:

Your very first step should be research. Know what you want to get from your advertisement; whether it is more business or popularity; and know what your business offers and how it works. You need to find out who is interested in your product or service and then you want to research the best ways to get your message across to your audience. You can do this by searching for other businesses that are like yours and using their tactics to help you create your own!

Which Type of Ad do you want?

There are two different kinds of ads that Facebook allows; the Facebook Ad or the Social Ad. With the Facebook Ad, you are able to create an ad that is straight-forward and links to an application, a Facebook Page or even an external website.

The Social Ad, like the Facebook ad, is branded but it also uses social interactions that are performed by a user’s friends. Those interactions are used by Facebook as a headline and are displayed in a Mini Feed for the Facebook User to see.

For beginners, it is recommended to start out with the Facebook Ad at first. Once you get the hang of it, you can then start using Social Ads and make it easier by linking Facebook Connect to your website to make it easy for users to connect to your Facebook Page and then share it with their friends on Facebook. When you use this correctly, your benefits will be huge!

What’s next?

Once you have a good amount of followers on your company’s Facebook page, you are able to start using Social actions much more. You are able to get your messages going “viral” and get even more fans and more business for your company. The more your followers interact with your Facebook Page and your Ads, your information will be shown on your follower’s friends’ pages even more!

On Facebook, you are able to target your audience much more easily and more definitely than on Adwords. You are able to target by age, gender, state, city, workplaces, relationship status, sexual preference, and even your own keywords! There are over 33 million targetable people on Facebook today!

Figuring out Bidding and Budgets:

Facebook allows users to start out with a $5 minimum campaign or your minimum CPC/CPM multiplied by 2. It is suggested that you start out with at least $250 to test your ads. Facebook will assign a daily spending limit of your starting amount ($250) and this will be increased over time depending on how much you spend daily after 5 payments.

The budgets and prices you choose will vary based on your targeting options; ads get a lot of impressions so you should plan for this. Set your budget at what you can afford to spend and then test it from there.

CPC is the most recommended model for Facebook because it can end up costing less in the long term future.

Creating your Ad and Collection Data:

Next you will want to create an advertisement that appeals to your audience, ensure that your title is catchy and your ad is clear and concise. This way you can make sure that your users will read your ad and will be interested in clicking on it.

Facebook Insights or even Google Analytics can be used to track your ads and collect data to give you reports based on how often your ads are seen, how often they are clicked on and tips on how to make your ads more useful for your business.

Once you’ve begun, you are able to change your ads, change your budget and make changes with any other aspect of your campaign whenever you need to. This makes it easy to be seen by millions of Facebook users and create a target audience that will, in turn, create more business and more revenue for your company!

Don’t forget to have a fast internet connection in place so that you can enjoy an always on, rapid and responsive facebook experience. To be able to upload images and video you definitely need fast bandwidth and many internet providers are offering high speed internet at great discounts. Check out AT&T with their uverse deals where you can save a lot of many on your internet service. Best of luck on your Facebook Advertisements and I hope you make a lot of money.

Could your boss buy you an iPhone?

According to Forrester Research’s annual Global Technology Market Outlook review, business spending on Apple devices will increase by 50% this year, as part of global iPhone sales of £75 million (and iPad sales of £35 million). More and more businesses who might previously have bought their employees a BlackBerry are trialling, or already buying, iPhones instead. Likewise, lots of firms are picking up iPads where they might earlier have bought laptops. Time to start talking to your boss about how much more productive and inspired you could be if you had an iPhone 4S.

China gets the iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S finally launches in China, with the expectation of massive sales. Chinese telecoms companies are falling over themselves to offer the best deals on a 4S, with China Unicom giving away a free 32GB 4S for just £29 a month… so long as you’re happy to sign up for a three-year contract.

Apple smartphones are now available in over 90 countries, and the brand continues to enjoy enormous social cachet around the world, with customers repeatedly showing that they prefer iPhones over similarly specced devices that are cheaper or faster. This hasn’t stopped Chinese phone maker Meizu trying to cash in with an iPhone knock-off, the MX. The MX got its Chinese launch two weeks before the iPhone 4S, on January 1st, but only time will tell if the vast Chinese market embraces the fake or is willing to wait for the more expensive real thing. Meizu has copied Apple’s advertising and even the décor of their stores, down to the kind of tiny details that a US or UK court would pounce on, but Apple is unlikely to try to sue Meizu in the latter’s native China, where intellectual property laws are relatively weak.

Quad-core iPhone 5 or iPhone 6?

References to four cores, buried deep within the code for the beta release of iOS5, might mean that Apple’s planned A6 chip, already in trial production, may be quad-core. This year, if this happens at all, it’s likely to only ship in the iPad 3, but given that the iPhone 4S borrowed the iPad 2′s A5 chip, it seems only a matter of time before we see a quad-core iPhone too.

Owners of the iPhone 4S download more

Research by network management firm Arieso has shown that iPhone 4S users download an average of twice as much data as iPhone 4 owners, and three times as much as those still stuck with older models. This could lead to major network problems down the line, as phone operators struggle to cope with spiralling data use by customers who are increasingly using their smartphones as the main way they connect to the internet.

The main cause of this increase appears to be Siri, which requires constant communication with Apple servers to carry out the most basic of voice recognition features. Even asking Siri to set your alarm requires the use of data, as the request is sent to Apple to be processed. This could cause problems for people who have signed up for an iPhone 4S contract with a relatively low amount of data available.

Apple Legal Update

The Supreme Court in California just gave Apple $920,000 (around £600,000) back from the taxman, upholding an earlier ruling that the company had overpaid. The company is also fighting to try to pay far less tax than usual on its overseas earnings, which are massive (and likely to become more so, with the Chinese iPhone 4S launch). This has drawn anger and protests from US Uncut, the sister group to the British anti-tax-dodging campaigners UK Uncut.

Tablets like the iPad have made our lives easier by bringing our email, work, and communication on the go. However, can this tool be used to help people with speech problems, too? Many speech pathologists believe so.

Third party companies are developing iPad applications especially tailored for children with special needs. Among these is the application Prologuo2Go, an augmentative communication device for children who can’t adequately express themselves.

With applications like Prologuo2Go, children that need to develop their verbal skills can now point to pictures of what they wish to communicate to others. Games are developed on the iPad that make speech therapy and communication fun, colorful, and engaging. Even silly games like making a virtual cake on the iPad can teach children the steps of how to make something.

The iPad not only helps with speech development, but also aids patients with general developmental delays, delayed motor skills, autism, and even cerebral palsy. The iPad can also help those with trouble focusing in a classroom setting, giving them a tool through which they can complete tasks independently, at their own pace.

Additionally, the iPad allows many schools and medical centers to save money, as its $500 price tag is significantly lower than prices for many speech pathology and therapy technology. Its portability and capacity are added bonuses.

Google may be on to something big with its fibre network. The search-engine giant is experimenting with a network that uses fibre-to-the-home technology to grant users incredibly fast internet speeds – up to 1 gigabit each second in some cases. This fibre network, if rolled out across the world, could really change communications and offers a lot of scope for innovations. Users could take advantage of these fast speeds to quickly download films or to stream images as part of university lectures or business consultations. This combination of speed and the utility it brings means the experimental network poses a threat to ISPs as we know them.

Google announced the fibre network towards the start of 2010 and has been testing and refining its creation by offering it to relatively small groups of users across select parts of the U.S. The locations were chosen based on the potential for fast internet present in those places and on the services already available to internet users.

Google hopes that the fibre network will bring with it a number of advantages for end users. Firstly, users will enjoy the fruits of the labours of net developers, who Google foresees will use the fiber network to create new services and apps that take advantage of the high speeds offered. Google also wants to share what it learns through developing its network with the world. The internet giant doesn’t want to be viewed as an ISP either, instead pledging that the fibre network will remain open access, meaning users can choose a service provider as they please. Google doesn’t seem to want to predict the exact potential of their network, instead concentrating on the scope of what they’re creating and how it could enhance communications.

Google’s desire to push what the internet can do and offer and its commitment to transparency along the way, could be a big draw for many technologists. Firstly, start-up businesses and developers with an entrepreneurial side may find Google’s fibre network especially appealing. There is plenty of potential for designing something new in terms of internet services with the backing of the network’s owner. Previously, these developers may have been put off innovation by the ISP or designed services that bypassed the ISP, whereas now Google is actively courting entrepreneurs and innovators. Services that are especially reliant on broadband – and fast broadband at that – will also likely find the idea of Google’s fibre network attractive, since it should be able to guarantee the kind of speeds these service designers will be looking for.

If Google’s fibre network becomes more widespread in the future, it could change the way in which network owners make money, as Google would profit from ad sales rather than charging for users to access their network. Google’s desire to remain transparent – for example about their network costs – and to welcome innovation may also appeal to internet regulators, for example the Federal Communications Commission, who may have concern about how transparent ISPs, such as those that provide pay as you go mobile broadband services, are being.

Google’s fibre network presents a threat to ISPs if it can create a more transparent online marketplace when it comes to costs and pricing, particularly for pay as you go mobile broadband services. The threat would be greater if developers get on board and design services that would be difficult to run on the networks of these ISPs. While the fibre network is unlikely to initially push ISPs from the market, over time it could change not only the services we access over the internet, but also how transparent network providers are.

When creating a niche website, doing the proper keyword research is one of the most important factors that can determine how successful you will be. Choose the wrong keyword and you will never make it onto the first page of search rankings. However if you do the proper research and pick the pick the right keyword you can rank highly even if you don’t have a lot of content or back links. I will go over the exact method I use when doing keyword research for Niche websites.

I use Market Samurai for keyword research so for this tutorial Download a free trial so you can follow along.

1. Create a new project

Open up Market Samurai and create a new project. Just enter “niche website” as the keyword for now as we will be doing the keyword research shortly.

2. Choose a keyword

Next we need to choose a keyword to research, it can be helpful to brainstorm as many keyword ideas as possible and make list. Look around your home, look on the internet, talk to your friends and family to get as many ideas as possible. Try to target keywords that have a product or service associated with it and something that isn’t too technical (tech saavy people are less likely to click on ads and also this is a highly competitive niche). For this tutorial I will use the keyword “Home Garden” as an example.

Click on the “New Keyword” tab and enter your keyword then click “update”

3. Keyword Research

Now click on the “Keyword Research” Tab, change the phrase length to between 2-4 words. Remember we are targeting a niche, so our keyword may be several words long “vegetable garden fencing” or similar.

Click “Generate Keywords” and Market Samurai will use Google Adwords Keyword Tool to generate results. (You will need to enter your Google account details into Market Samurai)

4. Keyword Analysis

A list of keywords will be generated, now click on “Keyword Analysis”

Adjust the filters to the following settings:

You can play around with the various filters to suit your needs.

5. Find Domains

Now select the checkbox next to all the keywords you are interested in and select “Find Domains”

I tend to look for exact match domain names if possible so delete the prefixes and suffixes from the domain variations, leave the Domain TLD’s as com, net, org and have no domain filters. Click “Find Domains”

6. Results

As you can see we got three results from a very big list of keywords which is very typical. The truth the majority of domain names you search for will already be taken. Do not fear because Google are placing less emphasis on exact match domain names so if you are eager to target a specific keyword then go with a suffix or prefix on the domain name.

7. Conclusion

Repeat this process for different keywords to come up with a master list of possible domain names to choose from. I will be writing a tutorial next week about the factors you should consider when deciding what domain names you want to turn into a website.
