//-->
Any parent with two children who are close to each other in age will know just how frustratingly difficult it can be to take a proper family outing whether it be a day out, trip to the park or shopping. The older child will usually tire of walking pretty quickly and want a place to sit down and rest their little legs. If you have a single baby buggy you will probably have had to trade off carrying one child and letting the other ride in the buggy. Especially difficult when you are shopping. If this is your situation, or if you have a youngster and are expecting another soon you should definitely look into up grading your single to a double buggy.

Luckily for parents there are more and more solutions to this problem coming onto the market every day. If you are thinking about getting a double pushchair now is a very good time to buy one. Just a trip to the park can be much more fun for the parents and the children alike. The extra storage space underneath the twin pushchairs can hold picnics, nappy sacks and toys for the little ones. There are even jogger friendly models for parents who like to take the opportunity to exercise while they take their young ones out.

If you’ve ever taken your kids to an amusement park with a single push chair, you know how difficult it can be to decide which child gets to ride and which has to walk. The youngest might be happy to ride but the oldest might get tired walking or simply decide they want a ride too. Also while you’re juggling your children you’re also having to deal with your bags, lunches, and all of the other things that you need to carry along to a park when you have children. Shopping can be a total nightmare with one child running around grabbing things off the shelves or knocking stacks over. You can make them hold your hand but with pushing the buggy you won’t have a hand free to collect any shopping. By using a double baby buggy you can solve all of these problems, by having places for both children to ride, and storing all of your belongings on the buggy itself.

These double travel systems are stylish and affordable. They are practical, yet full of safety features that can set any parents mind at ease. Many of the newer systems offer great features like being collapsible. You can unfold them when you need them and break them down for easy stowage in your boot when they aren’t in use. Also by using online shopping outlets you can find a double baby buggy that’s extremely affordable as well.

No matter what you’re going to be doing with your two children, we’ve seen how having a double baby buggy can really help make your family outings far more fun and enjoyable. Please consider purchasing one of these systems for you and your children. You will find some great examples and reviews at http://buggypushchair.com

 //-->
Every year millions of people all over the world make New Years Resolutions, but an awful lot of those promises are broken pretty soon. The most popular resolutions are to stop smoking or lose weight, both difficult to do in their own way. This year I will be making an Old Years resolutions and this is:

To carry on giving up smoking and never put one of those disgusting, addictive, foul smelling, cancerous things in my mouth ever again.

There I’ve said it. Do you know how much it means to me and anybody else who manages to stop smoking to be able to say that and know that this time you really mean it? When you watch TV programmes like the X Factor or Strictly Come Dancing the contestestants always seem to say that winning means the world to them. Well in the real world stopping smoking truly can mean the world to you when you have smoked for many years.

I started when I was 14, it was easy to buy separates from corner shops and then graduate to packs of 5 Park Drive if you got some extra spending money or had a pal to share the cost with. Back then in the 60s it was cool to smoke, the height of sophistication if you were an impressionable teenager. We just didn’t know the health risks that went hand in hand with looking sophisticated to our peers.

Then the health risks became known but when you are addicted your needs overcome what is good for you. It is hard to stop smoking, very hard for most of us nicotine addicts. Every now and then you try to stop but more often than not you weaken and start smoking again. You create a pattern until eventually you manage to break that pattern and stop – that is if you don’t die from smoking related illnesses first.

I will be ending the old and starting the new year as a non smoker and that will be for the first time in 40 years. I won’t have a smokers cough or get out of breath while I am partying. Those who I give a new years hug or kiss to will smell Opium perfume on me and not be repulsed by the disgusting ashtray smell. I won’t have to go outside in the cold with the other outcasts who share the horrible habit and I can brag about how much money I have saved.

Very important to me and the main reason that I stopped back in May is a massive improvement in my circulation. Last winter I suffered from a lot of excruciating pain in my fingers from Reynards disease. At times it was frightening because there was no circulation in my fingers and it was difficult to get my fingers warm enough to get the blood flowing again.

As I work in a shop that sells chilled and frozen products I couldn’t always keep my fingers warm and they and my livelihood were at risk. Now that I don’t smoke those problems have lessened to such an extent that it is just an occasional minor nuisance now. Sometimes it was too painful to use my computer keyboard but now there isn’t a problem.

For those of you who despair of ever giving up smoking my story is proof that eventually you can stop. With my weak willpower it took a lot of attempts using different methods to stop but eventually I found the way that works best for me and that was electronic cigarettes. I used them to gradually get rid of my nicotine addiction and I don’t smoke anything now – nor am I addicted to anything.

One of the things that I did to help myself was to build a blog and keep an online diary. Knowing that other people would be watching how I did strengthened my resolve and my diary will always be there to stop me from slipping.

Not me anyway. After the auditions I sort of favoured Jamie Afro, that was based on his great performance of Sex on Fire. Problem was that Jamie never set the stage on fire again so my attention turned to Miss Frank. This girlband was 3 contestants who were encouraged to form a group after they failed to get through to bootcamp. They were great, original and interesting and I’m sure will have a good future if they stay together.

I always liked runner up Ollie Murs, he is a great performer though I didn’t think that his singing voice was the best. Up until the last 3 weeks I would have chosen Olly over Joe because his performances entertained me more. Then I saw that Joe had constantly improved and that his confidence was growing. Suddenly young Joe McElderry was beginning to look like a contender. His voice is probably the best of all of the contestants with perhaps the exception of Danyl Johnson who came fourth.

In third place was Stacy Solomon, the Dagenham girl with the big voice. She never really did it for me until the last show where she sang the Freddie Mercury classic ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’ and performed a duet with Michael Buble. That duet was something else and to me was better than the Ollie Murs/Robbie Williams duet and the Joe McElderry/George Michael duet – to be honest I was disappointed in George Michael and thought that Joe outsang him.

The final was one of the most entertaining shows that I have ever seen and included a performance by Sir Paul McCartney, the most successful singer songwriter ever. When the X Factor finalists joined him on the stage it must have been massive for them – or epic as Olly says.

Congratulations to Joe, a very worthy winner. Congratulations to Cheryl Cole who mentored her second winner in a row. Congratulations to all of the other finalists who never failed to entertain during the best X Factor year yet.

 //-->
“Giving up smoking is not easy” I replied to my friend who lives in blissful ignorance of what it is like to quit smoking having never smoked a legal tobacco product in his life.

Patronising people like him really bug me and for at least 10 seconds the friendship is over! Okay I’m not that shallow but why do so many non smokers believe that stopping smoking is easy and especially for those of us who have smoked for many years?

I will allow that it is easier to stop smoking now than it ever was but it still isn’t easy. There you are struggling to stop and wanting to slap all of those who tell you that you need more willpower grrr. You need to buy some cigarettes just to stop exploding and injuring a section of the human race.

Unless you are super human it isn’t about willpower for most of us. It’s about making the decision to quit smoking and taking one day at a time. If you don’t think that you can go cold turkey then forget the superhuman willpower stuff and seek out a stop smoking aid and if that isn’t helping try another and another until you find what is right for you.

There are plenty of choices out there: nicotine patches, nicotine gum, hypnotism, laser therapy, acupuncture, audio tapes, tablets and even electronic cigarettes. As you can see there is absolutely no need to torture yourself and those around you with horrible withdrawal symptoms unless you are that way inclined!

Other friends who bug me order me not to start smoking again. The pointless conversation usually goes something like this:

“How are you doing with the stopping smoking?” or “Are you still not smoking?”

“Fine” or “Yes” I reply while wanting to throttle my friend for reminding me.

“Good – don’t you dare start again, you know how bad smoking is for you”

‘Of course I dare start again you fool’ I think while I force a smile knowing that my friend is well meaning.

The point that I’m making here is that I want to forget about smoking for as much of the day as possible and asking for progress reports really does not help those who are trying to stop.

On the other hand if somebody who has stopped offers information such as how long it’s been since they had a cigarette then praise them. Tell them how well you think they are doing, ask them something intelligent like “Do you feel better for it?” or “How much have you saved?” Make them feel good, not annoyed enough to go out and buy a pack.

The worst type of friends an ex smoker can have are those who offer them cigarettes.

“Go on, take it. One won’t do any harm”

Yes it will be harmful. One leads to another and ex smoker becomes a smoker again. You don’t want that – or do you?

At least this type of friend can be avoided to a certain extent if you live in a country where smoking is now banned in public places. You can dodge going outside with them or into an area where smoking is allowed.

Giving up smoking is easier nowadays with the smoking bans and more aids, but it becomes harder if those around you don’t help. Addiction to nicotine is harder to break than any other type of addiction and you need all of the help that you can get.

Eggtimers have been around for many years but if the idea was invented in this day and age the inventer would make a fortune.

One of my favourite inventions has to be the ring pull for cans. It appeared in the late 90s and the can opener is now practically redundant in my house. No more cut fingers or having to rush out to buy a new can opener when you can’t find your old one or it breaks. Sometimes the ring pulls are a bit tough to use but apart from that I think that they are great.

Last week I bought a new product that I first saw on the TV programme Dragons Den – one of my big favourites. The show where inventors and new business start ups are placed in front of a panel of 5 multi-millionaires. They ask for a specified amount of investment for a percentage of their company. After a grilling the contestants are either offered or not offered the investment that they want.

Anyway last year we saw a couple enter the Dragons Den asking for a £200,000 investment in their kitchenware range. One of their products was the Toastabag which they claimed you could use to make toasted sandwiches in your toaster. Multi millionaire James Cain was impressed enough to offer the £200,000 investment for 40% equity in the company.

I was a bit dubious about the Toastabag product, but when I saw them on offer in Poundstretcher at 99p each I decided to give them a tryout. On the way home I read the instructions and saw that they were meant to be used with variable width slot type toasters, or sandwiches would need to be flattened or squashed for normal slot sized toasters.

‘Darnit’ I thought ‘no toasted sandwiches for me’ I was quite disappointed because my oven grill stopped working shortly after the year long guarantee expired and I love cheese on toast.

I was wrong, when I got home I saw that my toaster slots were quite large so my toasted sandwiches were back on. I was a bit worried that the bags would melt with the concentrated heat of my toaster, but reckoned that they wouldn’t be on sale for that purpose if that could happen.

I placed my sliced cheese between 2 slices of bread and as an afterthought added a sliced tomato. Placed the sandwich in the Toastabag and popped it into my toaster. I had increased the toaster cooking time beforehand.

About 3 minutes later I took the bag out of the toaster – ouch! It gets really hot so be careful. As soon as my toastie was cool enough to eat I tried a small biteful quite gingerly. Wow it was nice, just as tasty as cheese and tomato on toast done under my cooker grill when it worked but only a little bag to clean afterwards.

It says on the cover that you can use Toastabags to make a variety of toasties and heat up things like pastry, pizza, chips and chicken nuggets. I heated up a cornish pasty using one, that was quick and easy. I also made my favourite toasted sandwich – ham, cheese, tomato and onion – that was good.

Each bag is supposed to be usable up to 50 times. I don’t know about that claim so far but they are cheap and do the job that they are supposed to. Another good invention I think, certainly a tasty one!

// ]]>When I visited California and Nevada I came back to England disappointed that I hadn’t seen any sign of native Red Indians and their culture. Today I go shopping in drizzly Yorkshire and see not 1 but 3 Red Indians in all of their colourful glory.

They were playing what I assumed to be red Indian music outside the bus station. They made me smile and everyone around, what a lovely change.

What made me frown was in the toy section of a department store. An outfit that looks as if the child is on fire for goodness sake. I can still hardly believe that it was on sale and aimed at any market never mind impressionable children. Do we really want our children dressing as if they are on flames? Shame on those toy manufacturers, how long will it be before a child sets themself on fire because they have seen this ‘toy’?

And just two days after his graduation at Guildhall, he took one of his most popular movie roles to date, Legolas from Lord of the Rings trilogy. This would not have happened if he got the role he auditioned for, the role of Faramir, who becomes part of the story only on the second part. The director of the Lord of the Rings had Bloom play the role of Legolas instead. Another unfortunate thing that could have ruined his role as Legolas is his accident during the filming. Thankfully, Bloom recovered soon enough for him to go on with the rest of the film.

The second movie that contributed to Orlando Bloom’s immense popularity is Black Hawk Down. In this film, Bloom played the role of Todd Blackburn. Though his role in Black Hawk Down may have been brief, it did not stop fans from noticing his looks and acting skills. After starring in these flicks, Bloom managed to be included in Teen People’s 25 Hottest Stars under the age of 25 list. Successively, he was also named as People magazine’s hottest bachelor in Hollywood for the year 2004.

Because of the incredible success of Lord of the Rings, he also received nominations from Screen Actors Guild Awards together with his co-actors. The cast continued to be nominees for three years until they were finally given the Best Ensemble Acting award officially on their third nomination in a row. Other than the SAGs, Bloom also received recognitions from other award giving bodies such as Hollywood Festival Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Empire Awards and European Film Awards.

His success did not stop with these blockbuster hits and overwhelming awards, for in the summer of 2003, he got hold of a role in another highly anticipated trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean, along with equally loved actors, Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp. As expected, the film rose to fame and garnered love and appreciation not just by the fans but also from critics. The release of the second and third installment also proved to be a success, making Bloom an even more popular actor.

Other than Pirates, LOTR and Black Hawk Down, Orlando Bloom also participated in other critically-acclaimed films. He became a part of the film, Troy, in the spring of 2004 where Bloom shared the limelight with other actors such as Brad Pitt, Peter O’Toole and Eric Bana.

He proved to be not just one of the most good looking actors in the industry but also one of the most talented as well as he played lead roles in Elizabethtown and Kingdom of Heaven both in the year 2005. He does not limit his roles in mainstream movies for he also took part in the production of an independent film, Haven, in which he was the executive producer. And quite obviously, Bloom has not done a single film that did not make it big. He can indeed turn any movie into a blockbuster hit.

Yes! I know “All You Need Is Love” is a John song, but I thought it sounded better than “Let it Beet” or “The Long and Winding Rutabaga.”

All this vegetable talk is in regards to Sir Paul McCartney’s recent appeal for everyone to go meatless on Mondays.

The ultimate goal of these meatless Mondays is to cut down on the amount of gaseous emissions from farm animals and thus slow down the effects of global warming. Apparently farm animals “emit” more greenhouse gases than all the world’s cars combined-sounds like we need hybrid cows not hybrid cars.

While it sounds a little odd to ask people to give up their Whoppers in order to stop bovine flatulence, Sir Paul has been a vegetarian for decades. Besides, this type of culinary activism certainly hasn’t hurt the sale of Paul McCartney tickets.

Sir James Paul McCartney was born on June 18th, 1942 and is a former Beatle. McCartney is a multiple Grammy Award-winning English singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, entrepreneur, film producer, record producer, painter, and animal rights activist. He gained worldwide fame as a member of The Beatles, alongside John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison.

This summer Paul is everywhere.

Just announced, the former Beatle is selling New York tickets for an added third show. This new date, the last of three Big Apple performances (July 17th and 18th), is scheduled for July 21st at the New York Mets’ new ballpark, Citi Field.
These dates continue McCartney’s tradition of performing at the Mets’ home stadium. In 1965, the Beatles were the first music act to perform in the Mets’ former home, Shea Stadium.

During Billy Joel’s “Last Play at Shea,” Sir Paul joined “Soused Billy” for one last sing-a-long before they tore the place down.

Now, Paul McCartney will be the first music act to perform at the Mets’ new digs.

While it’s definite that McCartney will play at the new Citi Field, rumors are swirling about Paul McCartney Boston tickets for two shows at venerated Fenway Park. Just imagine combining two great things, McCartney and Fenway!

The park’s management has filed for a license to host two concerts, both with pyrotechnics, for August 5th and 6th. Those dates just happen to coincide with a Red Sox road trip.

Insiders believe Fenway management is waiting to reveal McCartney’s first ever Fenway concerts until a June 22nd public hearing.

Fenway and Shea aren’t the only historic North American performances Sir Paul has on his schedule in 2009. Paul McCartney Halifax tickets are on sale for a July 11th performance-his only concert in Canada in 2009.

Sir Paul’s gig in Halifax overlaps the famous Tall Ships Nova Scotia Festival. Promoters are expecting 60,000 fans to see McCartney rock the ‘Fax.

Even at 67, Sir Paul McCartney is still delighting fans with his legendary music and he’s still making rock and roll history. And just like when he was a Beatle, he’s still trying to change the world, only now it’s one meatless day at a time.

 //-->
I’m really glad that I can’t smoke in public places any more in the UK and that other countries are banning smoking in restaurants and bars etc. I just wish that these smoking bans had happened years ago when we became more aware of the link between smoking tobacco and ill health.

Despite more awareness the amount of cigarettes bought in Britain last year was over 47 billion. As each cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals and at least 40 of those chemicals can cause cancer that’s like 47 billion health hits being fired at us Brits every year and we pay for the privilege!

To be fair the UK government have ramped up it’s anti smoking campaign. In 2008 the cigarette companies were made to add graphic images of throat cancer and rotting lungs and teeth to cigarette packets. A year earlier the legal age for buying tobacco products was raised from 16 to 18.

There is now a voluntary scheme in place for shops where anybody who doesn’t look 25 has to show the correct id when buying age related products like cigarettes.

Smoking is on the decrease but even so it is still the biggest killer and over 106,000 people in the UK died last year due to smoking. It isn’t just smokers whose health suffers from the effects of smoking tobacco, anybody who breathes in the smoke from tobacco is at risk.

Frightening isn’t it? We pay to risk our lives and the lives of those around us by partaking in what is really an unpleasant habit that tastes nasty and smells disgusting.

What I have noticed in recent years is that we don’t offer our cigarettes around as much. Years ago whenever you were in any sort of social environment you offered your cigarettes or cigars to those around you and they did the same. You could end up smoking several different brands and with a cough or sore throat from switching about, but offering cigs out was the done thing.

Now if you are in an area that it is acceptable to smoke the likelihood of being offered even a roll up is lower, perhaps because smokers have been made to feel uncomfortable about their habit.

I don’t think that smokers smoke in front of children as much nowadays. I look around at my family and neighbours and most of them now go outside the home away from their kids to smoke.

Apart from being more aware of the damage that can be done to children’s health youngsters are also being made aware of the harm that smoking tobacco causes and are joining in the chorus of disapproval. Children tell their parents off for smoking, children are frightened that they may lose their parent or parent because of smoking tobacco products.

As I said at the beginning of this article, I really do wish that the smoking bans had happened years ago then maybe I wouldn’t have damaged my health by smoking cigarettes for nigh on 40 years.

Hopefully I have quit smoking in time to reclaim my health and the 10 years lifespan that I was losing as a long term smoker. Sometimes I feel angry that I have been able to easily buy something that is the world’s top cause of preventable death and it is still easily available.

Instead of dwelling on that I am celebrating the fact that I have stopped smoking after years of trying to give up smoking. I feel healthier, my bank balance is healthier and those around me are healthier – that’s a result!

 //-->
Beyonce Giselle Knowles was born September 4th, 1981 in Houston, Texas to Matthew and Tina Knowles as the first born of two girls. Before she reached the age of seven she was singing and showing signs of great talent. When she was seven, she was already attending dance school and was a soloist in the church choir.

By the time she reached her teen years, any spare time she could find was spent with her childhood pals, LaTayia Roberson, Kelly Rowland and LeToya Luckett, performing at local functions. The girls, then known as “Girl’s Tyme” tried their luck at Star Search but did not make the cut. Beyonce’s Dad gave up his good paying job in order to devote his time promoting the band. To this day Matthew Knowles manages his daughter’s career.

After trying a few different names, the girls settled on Destiny’s Child. The musical debut for the group was the song “Killing Time”, which appeared on the soundtrack for the “Men in Black” movie, released in 1997. A year later, they had number one single with the song, “No,No,No, Part 2.” The quartet became a trio later on that same year with the departure of LeToya and LaTayia, who decided to pursue individual careers. Destiny’s Child continued onwards and became one of the top R&B/Pop groups in 2000 accumulating four Billboard Hot 100 number one singles and numerous top ten hits, as well as two albums that went to number one.

The group’s second album continued with great success with tracks like “Say My Name,” “Jumpin’ Jumpin,’” and the very successful “Bug A Boo.” In the 2001, two Grammy awards were given to “Say My Name”. They followed up with a third album, “Survivor,” which produced such hits as the title track as well as “Bootylicious”. The group decided to disband by 2005 but had at that time proven themselves as one of the top selling female groups in music history.

Beyonce had proven her worth and skills as a songwriter. She won the 2001 Songwriter of the Year, awarded by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers Pop Music Awards. This made her the first African-American woman to win the award and only the second woman to win. She also spent a bit of time working on solo projects which at first was not as successful as the projects with the trio, but she was not easily discouraged.

When she finally released her solo debut album, “Dangerously in Love”, it went right to the top selling over 300,000 copies in just the first week and went platinum 3 weeks later, in June of 2003. The single from the album,”Crazy in Love” topped the charts and stayed there for over 8 weeks. Later that same year her album and the single topped the charts at the same time which put her on the same level as such musical wonders as The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and Rod Stewart. She was and still is the only female artist to have accomplished this feat. This helped make Beyonce one of the biggest artists in both sales and popularity for 2003.

In 2004 she won five Grammy Awards. On the Destiny’s Child album released in 2005, Beyonce released a song called “Check on It,” which was used on the soundtrack of “The Pink Panther Movie,” released in 2006.

In correspondence with her 25th birthday, she released a second album called “B’day,” which sold more than her first solo album, with 541,000 copies sold in the first week after release. The lead single from the album, “Deja Vu,” became a number one hit on the US R&B charts.

Not only has Beyonce had success in music, but also on the movie screen. She may be best known for the character Foxy Cleopatra in the 2002 summer movie, “Austin Powers in Goldmember” along side Michael Caine and Mike Myers. In 2003 she appeared beside Cuba Gooding Jr. in the movie “The Fighting Temptations”. In 2006, she got chance to pay homage to Diana Ross in a movie based on a Broadway musical depicting the lives of the Supremes. Beyonce showed off her incredible acting skills, playing the part of Ms. Ross in the Movie titled, “Dreamgirls”, which opened with first weekend sales of $8 million and has grossed well over $100 million to date.

Beyonce’s talent has shown no end in sight and her fans are looking forward to see what is yet to come.
