Ask yourself these questions? Where do your clients/customers congregate on the Web? Just as in real life, people of similar ideas or concepts tend to gather in similar places. Of course, there’s always an exception.
Put together a list of sites that fit your clients ideas or concepts. Then research what the most popular items were for the past year. This could be anything, including specific topics, photo collections, cartoons, interviews, tools, interactive games, and contests.

It all depends on your clients taste and how much time and resources they want to contribute. After all, what’s most popular to a teenage gamer probably won’t be the most popular to a retired executive traveling the world. Remember, it’s not the mass appeal and size of a viral campaign that matters — it’s the final results.

Once this list has been compiled, have a group meeting to brainstorm ways to put a spin on one of those ideas for your viral campaign. It is essential to engage your client in this brainstorming session, this helps to give the overall direction, and focus on these issues / ideas your client likes or dislikes.

Research Social Media Sites

Why reinvent the wheel. Save time and resources by having someone research several social media sites, such as YouTube, Squidoo and StumbleUpon, to discover what the big success stories were for industries related to yours. Then put a spin on it to tailor it to your industry.
Sell women’s clothing? Look at jewelry or cosmetics. Sell merchant account services? Find out what the business loan sites are doing.
Represent a hotel or resort? Uncover tour operator strategies. Or examine what hotels are doing in different geographic areas.

Fun with Clients For the daring and progressive companies, create a cartoon or video poking fun at clients. Everyone loves a good laugh and it’s one of the most successful forms of viral marketing.
Find out what makes your clients unique. Something they’ll be able to laugh about without getting offended.
Need something more conservative? Turn it around and make fun of your industry with a parody.

Viral Contest Is your company bold and ambitious? Perhaps you’re a start-up company trying to get noticed. Create a contest for others to develop a viral campaign for your company. This can be done in a couple different formats depending on your company’s needs and appetite for risk.
It could be as simple as them coming up with the idea, then you implementing it. Or the contest can be for them to launch a full campaign. The one with the greatest success wins (make sure to have specific goals to judge who wins). Spend the initial time thinking through your viral marketing idea. Sometimes the hardest part is coming up with the idea. The extra time spent will help ensure it has a better chance of going viral.

Finally, make sure your company has the resources to pull it off. This includes staff, time, and financial resources. Too often, companies start a campaign only to realize they don’t have the internal resources to make it happen.

Creating successful directories

After one has purchased phpLD ( phplinkdirectory script) , inside the phpLD forum itself and also at Digital Point and other places, I noticed even though there were several directory owners, very few had a proper idea how they would present their directory to the people they were going to attract – the visitors. About at least 40% of the people had a single question in mind – what categories they were going to create and how ? As I had mentioned before, finding and buying the directory script was the easy part, as every second webmaster was building a directory .

In my opinion …. one of the major reasons so many members are building directories is simply to get more backlinks , reciprocal links or in other words SEO optimisation purposes . It is by now a well known fact that Directories are often easily crawled , especially if they are SEO friendly like phpLD. Some of the Directory owners also make it big by getting good PR and even getting enough submissions and promotions begin to charge money for the submissions. But in my opinion , a directory would primarily be built for making the web surfing / browsing easier for the novice or general visitor . There are by now millions and millions of websites and web pages, blogs, forums , article repository, services and products available on the web and the search engines like Google, yahoo , MSN and many others are undoubtedly making sure that they unearth new sites every day. However, as we painfully find out that just indexing the pages hardly makes it any easier for the surfer, due to various unethical SEO and spamming processes. Hence the directories …. but not just directories, but a well categorized directory, so that the user can easily and without any tricks manage to find exactly what they wish to find should be the objective .

Unless a web directory has a proper categorization , or a proper theme in mind, it is simply not worth making the directory. As a webmaster , we are doing our duty to educate and aid the layman visitor, but unless we ourselves are not educated enough, should we be attempting it ? As I had mentioned earlier , several wannabe directory owners ( mind you i am not saying I am a master by a long shot ), ask around the question of what categories should they be creating in their directory and often they are even ready to buy complete category structure of another directory or even custom categories ( I might get flamed for this, lol ) . If this was the case, why not simply use the DMOZ RDF dump, like many many other sites, which is available for free ?

If I may say so, what role are we playing as directory owners, if we are buying the software to create the directory base, buying the category structure and probably even buying links … and keep on cloning one General Directory with another? In my opinion, if we are going to build web directories, we should best be building niche directories with niche and detailed to detailed categories as much possible and trying to promote them and collecting links the hard way … by hand . If you dont have a idea, the least one can do is choose a section from DMOZ and carry forward on its branches of sub categories and list as many sites as you can and request other websites of that particular genre to submit to your directory . Maybe in this way , we will be able to actually share the load out of the search engines and continue to profit even as every other directory will be having its own importances.

DMOZ truly is not a bad place to start, as it is undoubtedly very neatly categorized with appropriate descriptions , and rules for each individual sub category , which can be implemented on our own sites a well. I have been creating categories for my own directory ( http://www.discusstv.com/directory/ ) and still I feel I am not even 15% through in creating branches to accomodate every kind of site which can fall under Entertainment ; and have also noticed, I think Anon (our phpLD mod) has a real estate directory with over 2,550,000 categories David ( phpLD owner ), if I am not wrong has a Directory for Dance related websites. Maybe these can give a example of what i have tried to rant about in the above passage .

Many companies also have jumped on the blog bandwagon to promote themselves and offer useful information to their customers. Some of the best blogs are from regular people living ordinary lives.

So, if you have an idea for a blog, don’t be shy. There’s bound to be an existing category for your blog—and if there’s not, you can create your own. That’s the beauty of blogging; there are infinite possibilities and millions of people who can access your site.

Have you put your goals into writing?

Most people have not.

Most people of course want to do well, but when asked ‘what is your goal’ they more often than not have a vague ‘I-just-want-to-make-some-money’ sort of answer.

You need to change this.

You need to have a laser-focused pin-pointed immediate answer of EXACTLY what it is you want to achieve.

If it’s a certain figure you are striving for every month – then visualize this EXACT figure.

If it’s to change a certain situation you are currently in – then visualize the exact resolution that you want.

This is important – because most people do not have an actual answer to the question ‘what is your goal?’

Writing down your goal will achieve this answer for you. And let me tell you – seeing what you want written down – is very empowering!

Write it down!

Slap it on your PC or your medicine cabinet or your refrigerator so you see it each day.

It suddenly makes everything ‘real’!

Find out about your list. What do they want to know? What are their struggles? What are their fears? What are their problems?

Ever since the dawn of time — the individual who discovers someone’s need — and then provides a solution to this need — will do well.

So you now have a list — albeit a small one. Rather than relentlessly trying to crow-bar out their credit card — instead nurture a relationship with them.

When I began I did not mail one offer to my list for almost 6 months. I spent the first 6 months building my list and nurturing a relationship with those on it.

Remember a website is not a business. There are millions of websites that don’t make any money. A product is not a business either. Anyone can get a product to sell.

What then is a business?

Customers. So look after ‘em.
