As with everything else we do, our restorations are done right. Take our clawfoot bathtub restoration, for example. We don't just spray on a coat of new porcelain and brush some paint on the outside and call it a day. We remove your tub, and clean it completely. The legs are removed as is the waste and overflow. The exterior is media blasted and then POWDER COATED for an incredibly durable, long lasting finish. We have new porcelain glazing sprayed on the inside. The legs can be powder coated or nickle plated (nickle is correct, chrome is not-although that is an option too if you want it). The tub is reinstalled, and a new waste and overflow kit is installed.

We can correctly restore your vintage toilet as well, using correct, brass parts.

So all of the things I mention, whether it is faucets and fixture replacement. Re- piping, new water services, hot water heaters and new sewer lines. We give written warranties, that go ABOVE AND BEYOND what the maunufacter offers.

A consumer should expect is a minimum of one year warranty on any repairs they have done. (With the exception of drain cleaning). Typically, no plumbing companies offer more than a 1 year warranty. BUT WE DO.

One year is the minimum required by law. We go far beyond that with our warranty. Various products come with different warranties from us. But the client can rest assured that by dealing with us, they have the best warranty in the industry.

Some companies will try to offer only 30 days. Drain cleaning is a little different situation, but when you're doing, re-piping and modernization of plumbing and fixtures you should get a minimum of 12 months on any warranty.

We do not think that it is right, to sell a client an expensive item such as a water heater, and have it fail in two or three years. While a parts warranty is helpful, where the customer really gets hurt is having a plumber come out and install the part that the manufacture sent them.

Some items that we sell, such as our Zoeller pumps, come with a factory warranty of one year, NO labor. That is where our minimum 2 year warranty steps in-we cover these for two years, parts and labor.

-We cover any defects in OUR workmanship for life. I do not believe that anything should fall apart or fail because we did a lousy job installing it.

-All other parts and materials furnished and installed by Goode Plumbing LLC is covered under warranty for the period that the manufacture covers the parts and materials for, but for a minimum of two years. This means several things:

Our traditional storage water heaters are made by Bradford White. They come standard with a six year warranty. One year of that is parts and labor, the remaining five are parts only. Goode Plumbing LLC, however, covers both parts and labor, for the full six years.

Our Rinnai tankless water heaters have a 10 year heat exchanger, 5 year component warranty-again, both parts and labor are covered by us, not just the usual one year labor, remaining duration parts.

Our Eternal water heaters have a 20/5 year warranty, similar to the Rinnai.

Our Toto G Max series toilets have a 5 year warranty, parts and labor.

Tankless vs. Eternal Hybrid Water Heater

It's the dead of winter, freezing cold outside, and you seek comfort in the piping hot confines of your morning shower.

Most of the standard big hot water tanks in older buildings are only 50-70% efficient, at best. Especially in the winter, it can take a while for your hot water to actually reach you.

A visit to your local big-box home-improvement store is overwhelming, to say the least. You're faced with too many brands and too many sizes to choose from. Different fuel sources and energy ratings confuse you. And what's the deal with these heaters that don't even have a tank? How on earth can they meet your needs? Unfortunately, your big-box home-improvement employee is no help.

Fortunately, we are here to help. Every home/condo/building has different needs. We can look at your situation and make the best recommendations for you.

Tankless water heaters are really catching on as an alternative to the big storage tank models. Instead of constantly heating water in a stored tank, tankless units only heat water as you need it. Turning on your hot water triggers an electric or gas-powered heat exchanger that quickly heats the water to your preset temperature. There are point-of-use models that only operate one or two fixtures, or whole-house units that take care of all your water heating needs. Point-of-use models are small and can be mounted under a cabinet or in a closet. Whole-house units are also wall mounted, saving valuable floor space.

Plus, the goverment has been offering up to a 30% federal tax credit. There are more and more manufactures entering the market with different models. The major manufactures are Noritz, Rinnai, Bosch, Takagi, Navien, Quietside and Eternal Hybrid.

As with everything there are pros and cons.

PROS-

Endless hot water since there is no tank to run of hot water.
That is important if you want to take a bath and have hot water left over.

Saves Energy, Very efficient and staying efficient. Some Tankless Water Heaters are now up to amazingly 98% efficient, meaning that only 2% of the energy is wasted and not used for heating the water.

Clean hot water. That is important if you use hot water for cooking or other uses besides showering. Water in the tank water heater is prone to bacteria growth, rust and sediments that are unhealthy.

High Capacity. If sized right multiple people can take showers at the same time and not to worry about cold showers, very important if you get to take shower after everyone else, especially if you have teenagers at home.

CONS -

- Higher initial Cost is mainly due to higher installation cost although with some newer condensing models the installation is becoming easier and less costly.

- Need Electricity to run. Electricity is used to control the heating process, not the heating. The computer that controls the valves and the heating can be run on a backup battery system if desired at additional cost. This is usually not a con.

- Minimum flow rate needed. Tankless Water Heaters need a minimum flow to operate, usually .05 Gallon per minute (GPM). That is you cannot have the faucets just trickling hot water when brushing or shaving, a bad idea anyway, wastes too much water.

- Some people find with the tankless water heater is that there is no heat transfer to the piping, so you may have to run a faucet for a little longer than you would with a conventional tank.

What about the Eternal Hybrid Water Heater?

The Eternal Hybrid Water Heater is a unique water heater that blurs the lines between a tank water heater and a tankless while taking the best qualities of each. The Eternal has a unique way of heating the water. It has a 2 gallon tank where the water is kept hot inside. Frozen Pipes A Big Problem in Chicago this Winter

A quarter million American families a year have one or more rooms in their houses flooded and their lives disrupted each winter because of pipes that freeze and break, according to State Farm Fire and Casualty Co.

If a pipe freezes, act quickly but carefully to thaw the pipe before it bursts.

Using a blow dryer to heat a cold water pipe at the point of the freeze may melt a clog. Electric pipe wraps are an option. A space heater placed in front of an open vanity might thaw pipes under a sink. Expert plumber Mike Goode, of Goode Plumbing in Chicago warns, "I would not leave a space heater or other heating device unattended when trying to clear an ice clog. Someone should be there to shut the water off in case the pipe has been damaged."

Never use a torch or flame to try to melt an ice clog.

If water starts leaking from a pipe after it gets warmer, the pipe has burst from the pressure of expanding ice. You'll need to shut off the water to the broken pipe as quickly as possible to minimize water damage. Frozen pipes are a problem that must be handled properly or you'll end up with flood on your hands. Mike says, "We have special pipe thawing equipment for these problems and know how to safely and slowly thaw the pipes and get the water going again."

SOME TIPS - Disconnect garden hoses and, if practical, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the short span of pipe just inside the house.

- Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to uninsulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.

- Insulate pipes in your home's crawl spaces and attic. These exposed pipes are most susceptible to freezing. Remember - the more insulation you use, the better protected your pipes will be.

- If you are a snow bird, and travel in the winter, never set the thermostat in your house or basement lower than 55°F (12°C).

Clogged Garbage Disposal Problems and Repairs

If you have a garbage disposal
in your kitchen, you know that it’s a great appliance that makes disposing of food waste a breeze.

But if not operated or maintained properly, a garbage disposal can easily break down, block and clog the drains and cause a long list of expensive plumbing and drain nightmares. Most garbage disposers fail because of abuse and improper use. Many people tend to overwork their garbage disposers because they don't know what they are designed to do.

The most important rule of thumb: Don’t Put Anything In The Garbage Disposal That Is Not Biodegradable Food. A garbage disposal is not a trash can; it’s for food scraps only. Non food items can damage both blades and the motor. I can't tell you the crazy things I have found in garbage disposals...cigarette butts, glass, plastic, paper towel. When in doubt, throw it out!

Here are some common mistakes that people make:

- Overloading: Feed your garbage disposer a little bit at a time. If you shove a whole bunch of stuff in there at once, it could clog the blades or burn out the motor.

- Running it dry: When you use your garbage disposer, always run some cold water at the same time. This will keep the motor from overheating. Continue to run cold water down the drain for at least a minute after you turn the diposer off. This will clean off the blades. Don’t use hot water when grinding food waste. Hot water will cause grease to liquefy and accumulate, causing drains to clog.

- Too Much Grease: Don’t pour grease, oil or fat into your garbage disposal or drain. Grease will slowly accumulate and impede your garbage disposal’s grinding ability as well as clog drains. When it cools, it will congeal and clog the blades and the motor. It's also smelly.

- Dumping in the wrong stuff: Try to avoid putting foods that have a lot of fiber into the garbage disposer. These foods tend to clog up the works. Avoid onion skins, chives, celery, carrot, corn husks, artichokes and potato skins, at least in large doses.

- Don’t put expandable foods into your garbage disposal. Foods like pasta and rice expand when you add water in a pot; they do the same thing once inside your pipes or garbage disposal and are the cause of many jams and clogs.

-Avoid putting coffee grounds down the garbage disposal. They won’t harm the garbage disposal and they’ll actually help eliminate odors. However, they can accumulate in drains and pipes, causing clogs. Best to avoid.

- Don’t use harsh chemicals like bleach or drain cleaners. They can damage blades and pipes. Borax is a natural sink cleaner and sanitizer that effectively works on odor-causing mold and mildew that accumulates in garbage disposals.

- Do grind certain hard materials such as small chicken and fish bones, egg shells, small fruit pits, etc. A scouring action is created by these particles inside the grind chamber that cleans the garbage disposal’s walls. Grind peelings from citrus fruits such as lemons or oranges to freshen up drain smells.

Basement Flooding in Chicago - Flood Control Systems and Over Head Sewers

Basement Flooding in Chicago

If you’ve ever had basement flooding then you realize what a nightmare it can be. Even if you don't store anything on your basement floors, flooding, water damage or even just a damp wet basement can be seriously damaging to your home and can be a risk to your health if left unattended. So how do you prevent basement flooding?

A flooded or wet basement can happen in a number of ways, most often it is caused by excessive rain storms that flood the area and the pipes and drains can not handle the flow. During spring thaws we see it when the snow melts too fast. If you have two sewer systems interconnected, they may not be able to handle heavy water flows.

Basically flooding will occur when there is more water than the ground can handle and it finds its way into your basement. It's also possible backups can also be caused by events not related to storms or flooding. Individual service lines can be plugged by grease, waste, tree roots, breaks in the pipe, or saturated ground.

One of the first things you want to check on your property, is that the gutters are clean and functioning properly. Water must be able to flow freely through the gutters and directed away from the basement. If they aren’t cleared out on a regular basis the water gets backed up and will pool below the gutters, often near your basement which causes flooding.

Inspect your building after a rain and look for any standing bodies of water and if there are you need to either clear them out, or better yet make sure you provide some sort of drain for the area. Any standing water could leak in and cause major basement flooding damage.

If you don’t already have a sump pump installed in your basement you should look in to having one installed. Sump pumps remove water that forms in the basement and drain it in to an area where it won’t cause much damage. When it becomes full, it will pump the water out and away from the building. Also a dehumidifier won't do anything about the flooding but will help keep the air dry and absorb some of the moisture and ordors in a damp basement. We like to use a drain tile system with a sump pump to eliminate seepage water in basements.

Beyond those simple remedies you may want to look into a flood control system. Our flood control systems are designed to keep your home from flooding and ultimately developing water damage.

We offer basement plug/standpipe/flood stopper devices - all of which are simple, low cost methods that may help those with basements that do not get much sewage back up. Sometimes a more elaborate flood control system must be installed outside of the basement, in the yard.

We also offer the overhead sewer conversion. An overhead sewer acts like a standpipe but without the problems.

Clogged Drains - Slow Running Drains - A Common Plumbing Question

Most people see a slow running sink or clogged drain and reach for the "drain cleaner" chemicals we see on TV. Millions of dollars have been spent to convince us this is a good choice. WRONG.

Traditional drain cleaners are typically bad stuff. If we read the directions on most of the labels, it'll no doubt say “Open carefully. Do not squeeze bottle. Avoid splashing. Clean up spills at once. Keep hands, face, children and pets away from drains while using…”

If this stuff is so nasty, who is warning the fish and the ducks and the beavers who might be living, swimming, and eating in the water somewhere downstream from our newly opened drain?

They are usually caustic, sometimes can burn through rubber gloves, and can be extremely toxic. There are alternatives that are as effective, cheaper, and safer for humans, pipes, and the environment.

THE PLUNGER.

Everyone should keep a couple good plungers in their house. It's amazing how well a plunger can work to remove clogs, as long as it's operated with some determination and used correctly. Many people don't use the plunger correctly, failing to get a good seal, which will prevent the plunger from working the way it should.

Many people think the harder they push/plunge down, they can force the clog through and out. Experts say that the plunger works best on the suction (up) cycle as opposed to the pushing (down) cycle. It's easier to pull the clog free from the drain than it is to push it through the drain: once the clog has budged, it's more likely to be broken up, but shoved further into the drain, it may just pick up more detritus and become more firmly lodged in the pipe.

NATURAL PRODUCTS -

There are natural products that will open a clogged drain or, when used regularly, keep the drain from clogging in the first place. Preventative maintanence. There are also mechanical ways of cleaning out the pipes which can be employed by any do-it-yourselfer.

A slow running drain can often be speeded up with a simple dose of very hot water. Many experts advise not to use boiling water if the pipes are PVC, but a temperature just short of boiling should be OK. Many kitchen slow running drains are often caused by a build up of grease and really hot water will dissolve and move it and any food particles caught in it down and out.

Another solution for a minor clog – one where some water is still getting through – is to dissolve ½ cup of salt in 4 quarts of water and heat to just short of boiling. Pour it slowly down the drain.

A cup or so of dry baking soda poured down the drain followed by that hot water will also clear some stoppages.

The KING of homemade drain cleaners is baking soda and vinegar. You pour a cup of baking soda into the drain and then follow it with a cup of white or apple cider vinegar. It will foam up and fizzle like crazy. Let it work for an hour or more then flush it with about a gallon of very hot water.
