The electric energy (electrical energy, electricity) is the potential energy associated with the conservative Coulomb forces between charged particles contained within a system, where the reference potential energy is usually chosen to be zero for particles at infinite separation.

The movement of electric charge is known as an electric current, and intensity of which is usually measured in amperes. Current can consist of any moving charged particles - most commonly these are electrons, but any charge in motion constitutes a current.

The energy sources we use to make electricity can be renewable or non-renewable, but electricity itself is neither renewable or non-renewable.

A generator is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. The process is based on the relationship between magnetism and electricity.

The cost of electricity is going up (both in dollars and in environmental and health impacts) and it doesn’t show any signs of doing otherwise. About half of the energy in the American grid is coal generated.

Demand for electricity grows with great rapidity as a nation modernises and its economy develops. The United States showed a 12% increase in demand during each year of the first three decades of the twentieth century.

In the late-1800s, Nikola Tesla pioneered the generation, transmission, and use of alternating current (AC) electricity, which can be transmitted over much greater distances than direct current. Tesla's inventions used electricity to bring indoor lighting to our homes and to power industrial machines.

Electricity is a general term that encompasses a variety of phenomena resulting from the presence and flow of electric charge.

Before electricity generation began over 100 years ago, houses were lit with kerosene lamps, food was cooled in iceboxes, and rooms were warmed by wood-burning or coal-burning stoves.

In 1882 water was used to electrify two paper mills and a house on the Fox River. This was the first application of hydro electric energy.

Electricity is by no means a purely human invention, and may be observed in several forms in nature, a prominent manifestation of which is lightning.

In 1791 Luigi Galvani published his discovery of bioelectricity, demonstrating that electricity was the medium by which nerve cells passed signals to the muscles.

Despite ever-increasing Mac sales, Microsoft still has an undisputed dominance over the computer industry.

With such a vast presence, much has already been written about Microsoft: Its history, its products, even its former CEO Bill Gates. For those itching to know even more, we've dug up 10 snippets of info that you might not have heard before.

What experimental musician created the Windows start-up sound? How do they celebrate anniversaries? Does Microsoft have a "pest" problem? Have a read of our Microsoft-themed facts, stats and trivia and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

1. "Micro-soft's" First Ever Mention

The first ever mention of "Microsoft" was in a letter from Bill Gates to co-founder Paul Allen in 1975. Gates initially wrote the company name as Micro-soft, which made sense considering it's a portmanteau of "microcomputer" and "software."

Losing the hyphen, "Microsoft" was officially registered as a company in November, 1976 in New Mexico where Gates and Allen were working with their first major customer, MITS. Microsoft didn't move to its current campus in Redmond, Washington until 1986.

The Microsoft logo has changed several times over the years, the current "Pac-Man" logo was introduced in 1987, but previous to that was the "blibbet" logo that's pictured above. The "blibbet" refers to the stylized "o" and was apparently once the name of a burger served in the Microsoft company cafeteria.

2. Brian Eno Composed "The Microsoft Sound"

Pioneering musician Brian Eno was the musical brains behind Window 95's start up tune, dubbed "The Microsoft Sound."

The influential musician, who has worked with the likes of David Bowie and U2, told the San Francisco Chronicle that making such a short piece of music was "funny" and "amazing." Eno likened the process to "making a tiny little jewel."

Other musical trivia from the launch of Windows 95 is, of course, the use of The Rolling Stones "Start Me Up" in the ad campaign, while a related Eno fact is that he also composed the music for the computer game Spore.

3. Microsoft's Fave Food Is Pizza

Although not quite at Google's level of snack-tastic, free-for-all wonder, Microsoft does offer free drinks. Over 23 million gratis beverages are downed on the corporate campus each year.

Apparently the top two drinks of choice for Microsoft staffers are milk and OJ. There's also free candy on the Microsoft campus shuttle.

As far as food goes, Microsoft has around 35 cafeterias (one of which is pictured above) serving around 37,000 people each day. Pizza tops the list of most popular meal.

4. Microsoft Uses Codenames

Ever since the company's first operating system, Microsoft has worked on its projects under codenames, of which Wikipedia has a long list. Apparently Gates was ready to launch Windows under the name "Interface Manager" before he was persuaded to change it by an employee.

Past codenames include "Longhorn," "Lone Star," and "Vienna." While you might be tempted to add "Mojave," to that list, it's actually part of a Microsoft ad campaign. The "Mojave Experiment" was a marketing exercise that battled Vista's poor PR by presenting the software to new users as a fresh product.

5. The Average "Softie"

The average Microsoft employee, or "Softie" as they call themselves, is a 38-year-old male with the average salary for a developer coming in at $106,000.

Microsoft currently employs 88,180 people who work across 32,404,796 square feet of Microsoft's premises, over 50,000 of which are U.S.-based. The male to female ratio is very high among Microsoft's American employees with a staggering 76% male workforce.

6. Microsoft Celebrates Anniversaries With M&Ms

All companies have their little in-house traditions, and Microsoft is no exception. It seems it's customary for Softies to celebrate their yearly employment anniversaries with candy, and more specifically, M&Ms.

Each anniversary, a Microsoft employee is expected to provide one pound of M&Ms for every year they've worked. That means if Bill Gates observed the tradition, he should have turned up with 33 pounds of M&Ms on June 27, 2008.

7. Microsoft's Stock Has Split Nine Times

Microsoft has split its stock nines times since it went public back in March 1986. Put very, very simply, a company will generally split its stock when its share price becomes too high.

Since Microsoft has had six 2-for-1 splits and three 3-for-1 splits, one original Microsoft share would now be equal to 288 shares today. Interestingly the price of Microsoft's stock at its initial public offering was $21 a share, at the time of writing a share is now around the $23 mark. One original MSFT share would now be worth over $6,000.

8. Microsoft Has a Huge Art Collection

No, we're not talking about Clip Art. Microsoft is one of the largest corporate collectors of artworks with over 5,000 contemporary pieces including painting, sculpture, works on paper, photographs, ceramics, studio glass, and multimedia works. Microsoft gathers arts from local artists, up-and-coming artists and big names such as Cindy Sherman, Chuck Close and Takashi Murakami.

A large proportion of the works are on display at more than 150 of Microsoft's many campuses, as the company subscribes to the belief that art in the workplace reduces stress, increases productivity and encourages discussions and expression of opinions.

9. Microsoft Asks Strange Interview Questions

Microsoft has a reputation in the industry for asking off-beat, off-the-wall questions during its job interview. The most oft-quoted question is: "Why is a manhole cover round?" Whether this particular example is genuine, or an urban legend, it's certainly true that Microsoft employs a very unusual, and forward-thinking interview process. It's even rumored that companies like Google have since emulated the style.

Rather than plain "Where do you see yourself in five years" type questions, Microsoft is more likely to ask you to solve a logic puzzle or think through a problem like "Design a coffee maker that will be used by astronauts." Obviously, Microsoft isn't planning to go into the coffee-in-space industry anytime soon, but the process serves to find candidates that can think creatively.

10. Microsoft Holds Over 10,000 Patents

Microsoft holds over 10,000 patents and files around 3,000 every year, ranking as one of the top five patent owners in the U.S.

Although a large majority of the patents relate to obscure elements of software, the 5,000th and 10,000th were consumer-friendly, easily-understandable ideas. The 5,000th was for tech in Xbox 360 games that lets people "watch" a video game remotely, while the 10,000th was for the Microsoft Surface, linking real-life objects with data and images.

Microsoft also rewards its staff members for securing a new patent. Besides a $1,500 bonus, they get a wooden plaque and a decorative black "cube" that features their name, as well as the title and date of the patent.

BONUS: The Microsoft Campus is Full of Bunnies!

Our very own Jolie O'Dell found a great factoid about the Microsoft Corporate Campus, she gleaned while on a recent visit.

"So, back in the mists of time, some people dumped a bunch of rapidly reproducing pet bunnies -- leftovers from kids' Easter gifts -- on a grassy knoll near the MSFT campus," Jolie said. "The bunnies started doing what bunnies do best, that is, making more bunnies.

At one point, there were so many that MSFT staff had to start catching them and having them spayed and neutered! Nowadays, you'll still see lots of rabbits hopping around, though. Way cuter than Google's goats."

It seems the bunny proliferation has been a long term issue. According to a 1998 Seattle Times article, the "Redmond rabbit problem" does not just affect Microsoft, but Nintendo, Eddie Bauer and other companies in the area.

The problem back then spawned the Redmond Rabbit Coalition group (many members of which are now involved in the current day Evergreen Rabbit Rescue) who campaign for a humane solution to the ongoing pest problem.

Unidentified flying object (commonly abbreviated as UFO or U.F.O.)
is the popular term for any aerial phenomenon whose cause cannot be easily
or immediately identified by the observer. The United States Air Force, which
coined the term in 1952, initially defined UFOs as those objects that remain

unidentified after scrutiny by expert investigators, though the term UFO is often
used more generally to describe any sighting unidentifiable to the reporting
observer(s). Popular culture frequently takes the term UFO as a synonym for
alien spacecraft. Cults have become associated with UFOs, and mythology
and folklore have evolved around the phenomenon. Some investigators now
prefer to use the broader term unidentified aerial phenomenon (or UAP), to

avoid the confusion and speculative associations that have become attached
to UFO. Another widely known acronym for UFO in Spanish, French, Portuguese

and Italian is OVNI.

1) There are an average of 70,000 reported UFO sightings every year, worldwide.
That's an average of 192 per day.

2) No UFO has ever been tracked on radar entering the Earth's atmosphere.

3) 1 in 5 Americans believe in alien abductions. Interestingly, males are more

likely to believe in abductions than females.

4) 1 in 7 Americans say that they, or someone they know, have had an "encounter"
with a UFO.

5) According to some UFO aficionados, the Men in Black (MIBs) really do

exist, and have been hammering on the doors of alien witnesses ever since

the first appearance of flying saucers in 1947.

6) Title 14, Section 1211 of the Code of Federal regulations, implemented on

July 16, 1969, make it illegal for U.S. citizens to have any contact with
extraterrestrials or their vehicles?

7) Kenneth Arnold Sighting (1947) – Washington, United States

Just before 3 o’clock in the afternoon, Kenneth Arnold, a private pilot and a fire
control equipment salesman from Boise, Idaho, was taking a flight over the
Cascade Mountains looking for the remains of a lost C-46, over which there
was a $5,000 reward being offered.

Arnold did not find the missing aircraft but he saw a bright flash of light and

spotted nine brilliant objects, with the lead object a little higher than the rest,
moving south toward Mount Rainer. He calculated their speed at 1,700 miles
per hour which was an impossible speed. The main object looked like a dark
crescent; the other eight objects were flat and disc-shaped. Arnold estimated
their chain length to be five miles long. They disappeared soon after. A new
era of unidentified flying objects began after this widely publicized sighting in
the United States. In fact, it was his descriptions that gave rise to the now
common terms “flying disk” and “flying saucer.”

8) No discussion on UFOs is complete without mentioning Roswell. It is considered
to be the bread and butter of Ufology, and the heart of UFO studies for long. The news
spread worldwide about the first alien craft crash. It was considered as the long awaited
proof of extraterrestrial intelligence. The Air Force announced being in possession of
the flying saucer but later denied, saying it was a weather balloon.

Years later, there was talk of military cover up of an actual UFO crash. A large area

filled with debris from wreckage was discovered and the material found was
unfamiliar and metallic, unlike anything seen before. Although, theories are
composed of conflicting accounts, there were some facts that were clear.
Something huge had crashed near Corona. Rumors had it that witnesses were
threatened if they revealed what they saw. There were too many witnesses who
claimed to have seen alien bodies. There is also enough evidence that autopsies
were done on an alien body.

9) One of the most interesting and convincing cases is the abduction

of Betty and Barney Hill. The couple was driving home at night on Interstate
Route 3 in New Hampshire after a short vacation in Canada, when they
noticed a while light in the sky.

Barney got out of the car to look at the object through his binoculars. The light
got closer and it looked like a pancake shaped object with windows revealing
occupants. They got scared and went back home and realized they had lost a
couple of hours without them realizing it.

Betty started having nightmares about aliens and Barney had severe back. A
respected psychiatrist in Boston, Massachusetts, felt they were suffering from
anxiety syndrome and put them both under hypnosis.

He was convinced that they were abducted by the aliens. During the hypnosis
sessions, both revealed separately that they were abducted by bald aliens about
five feet tall, green skin and large heads. They said their skin, nail and hair
samples were taken. Betty said they inserted a long needle into her naval,

which they said was a pregnancy test and Barney had to provide a semen specimen.

One aspect of this investigation that cannot be explained to this day is that in
1963, Betty Hill drew a very detailed map of a star system that was only
discovered later in 1969. She said she was shown this map by the aliens.
Astronomers at Ohio State University compared their computer generated

map with this one and both were completely alike.

Skeptics point out the inconsistencies, including the aliens speaking to Betty in

English while Barney said they used some sort of telepathy.

Now, more than forty years later, it could not be proved that it was a hoax.

10) Philip Spencer, a policeman in London, moved to Ilkley Moor after leaving
his job. While getting some photographs of the moor, he heard a humming sound
and saw a small green creature, around four feet tall. That creature moved away
quickly and when Spencer shouted, it turned and waved an arm dismissively,

which is when Spencer said he took this photograph. It moved faster than a human.
He followed it and saw a huge silver saucer disappear into the clouds. He
realized the humming sound was from the saucer.

Later, he realized that he lost more than two hours of his time and his compass
also went haywire. The picture was shown to a UFO researcher and a thorough
investigation started. Wildlife photography experts and Kodak laboratories revealed
that it was no animal and that the object was indeed part of the photo and not
superimposed.

Spencer started having weird dreams and under hypnosis, he revealed a fascinating
tale of being abducted by an alien and taken aboard the craft and given a medical
examination before being released. Spencer could now remember that the picture
was taken after his release from the UFO.

One thing that makes the researchers confident that Spencer may not have
set the whole thing up was due to the fact that he never wanted publicity or money.

11) The Alien Named “Aleshenka” (1996) – Kashtim, Russia

This is a compelling account of an Alien body from Russia. An elderly woman
in the village of Kashtim saw a small creature near the Ural Mountains, and the
creature was whistling to catch her attention. She took it home. The creature
had skin that was gray with dark brown spots on the head. There was no hair,
small holes in place of ears, small and flat nose, long fingers with sharp claws,
a tiny hole in place of a mouth and no lips. The old woman nursed it back to health.
After a couple of weeks, the woman was hospitalized for a psychiatric problem and
left her companion at home without food.

Later, the dead body of the being that measured 8 ½ inches in length was found

by the police. After testing, doctors claimed that the creature is not could not
have been a child.

The body was handed over to Galina Semenkova, head of a UFO expert
organization. Galina later said that aliens from a flying saucer demanded
the body and she gave it to them.

However, the whereabouts of Aleshenka’s remains are a mystery to this day.
Have the aliens really taken it back? Is the mummy under research in some

laboratory?

There are several controversies surrounding UFOs. While proponents
feel that UFOs are vehicles from other dimensions; skeptics propose the

psychological-social hypothesis. There is even the man-made craft hypothesis
by some who feel they are nothing but American or Russian aircraft. Fact or Fiction?

12) The first documented UFO sighting is in the Bible. The prophet Ezekiel
described a "great cloud with fire enfolding itself, a wheel in the middle of a
wheel that descended and fired lightning bolts into the earth."

13) The first photograph of a UFO was taken in 1883 by astronomer Jose

Bonilla in Zacatecas, Mexico.

14) Alexander Hamilton reported a cow being kidnapped by an airship
in Le Roy, Kan., in April 1897.

15) Winston Churchill reported a strange airship in Kent, England, Oct. 14, 1912.

It was the first case of a UFO being "officially" reported.

16) On Feb. 25, 1942, a large, dark object over the Los Angeles coastline
was mistaken for a Japanese attack and drew a barrage of anti-aircraft fire.

Memos to President Roosevelt confirmed the existence of unidentified aerial objects.

17) UFOs were often seen and photographed during NASA's space missions in the 1960s.

18) UFO sightings have been claimed by former President Jimmy Carter,
Clyde Tombaough (the astronomer who discovered Pluto) and William
Shatner (who claims to have been rescued by aliens who pointed him in the

01. Sonic The Hedgehog isn't only the name of Sega's speedy mascot, but also a gene on chromosome 7 of the human genome. Well, it was until recently when the science community decided to ditch all of its 'comedy' names for genes. Party poopers.

02. Matt Damon refused to appear in the recent Bourne Conspiracy game because he thought it was too violent. Not fussed by the violence in the films then, eh, Matt?

03. Ever wondered what happens to Leon's cool leather jacket in Resident Evil 4? It inexplicably disappears after the scene in the village. Well, on the PS2 version, go through Ada's side-quest and one of the Ganado villagers will be wearing it.

04. In the early stages of its development, Half-Life 2 featured a friendly alien that would follow Gordon Freeman around, feasting on the bodies of his fallen enemies. It was taken out when Valve discovered that the AI would be too difficult to convincingly program.

05. In 1986, Nintendo released a special Disk System peripheral for the NES in Japan. Among its features was a microphone in the controller, which certain games used, including an updated version of the original Zelda. You could only destroy a certain enemy by shouting into the mic.

06. The famously awful E.T. game for the Atari 2600 actually sold more than its most famous game, Space Invaders. E.T. sold 1.5 million, while Invaders only shifted a million.

07. A boss character called Binbag was removed from Rockstar's Manhunt early in its development. He was a psychopath wrapped in black refuse sacks. Lovely.

08. Rockstar also removed a character from Grand Theft Auto 3, although this time it was said to be because of the terrorist attacks on September 11th. He was called Darkel, a homeless guy who'd get you to rig buildings with explosives.

09. In the video game sequel to John Carpenter's seminal sci-fi horror film The Thing, the legendary director made a cameo appearance as a character called Doctor Faraday. He also oversaw the production of the game to make sure it was faithful to his original vision.

10. In Pilotwings 64, the character Lark is actually the mascot for famous American games magazine Nintendo Power, Nester. His name was changed at the last minute, probably because PAL gamers wouldn't know who he was.

11. Oscar-winning actor Marlon Brando recorded dialogue for EA's Godfather game shortly before he died, but it was deemed unusable due to the bloated thesp's ageing, mumbly voice. Instead, they hired in a sound-alike. What a waste of money, eh?

12. Vivendi's underrated Scarface game also featured a sound-alike, but this one was personally chosen by Al Pacino himself, hence the spot-on likeness. His name is Andre Sogliuzzo and he's a veteran video game voice actor.

13. DJ Atomica, the (some would say) annoying announcer in Burnout Paradise, is the same guy who provided the commentary for SSX 3. In Paradise, he makes reference to SSX several times, suggesting it's supposed to be the same character.

14. The Little Sisters from BioShock didn't start their life as little girls at all, but rather tiny mole-like creatures who scuttled around Rapture collecting Adam. Early concept art also shows them as retro '50s-style robots, too. We think they made the right choice.

15. UK Radio One DJ, Chris Moyles, was an enemy in the game spin-off of hit TV show 24. He played an Eastern European terrorist, who Jack Bauer found himself fighting at the end of an early level. It was only his face however; the voice was provided by another actor.

16. Another unlikely celebrity cameo is UK chat show host Jonathan Ross, who 'starred' in Halo 3. He supplies the voice of one of the marines who helps Master Chief, although it's very rare that one of his lines comes up -it's a totally random, and rare, occurrence.

17. In The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening, the advisor from the SNES version of Sim City, Dr Wright, appears in a house. He's named after Will Wright, the creator of the Sim series.

18. In Fallout 2, there's a hidden room in Junktown, in the Cafe Of Broken Dreams, where you can find Dogmeat, the Vault Dweller from the first game's faithful hound.

19. In the original Super Smash Brothers Melee, the Princess Daisy trophy had a mysterious third eye on the back of its head. Unfortunate glitch? Or something more sinister?

20. Sony's beautiful monster-toppling adventure game Shadow Of The Colossus was originally going to feature groups of characters on horseback working to take down the colossi cooperatively. This proved too taxing for the PS2's hardware, sadly.

Dogs have been man's pet for over 14,000 years. Dogs descended from the wolf family that roamed Europe, Asia, and North America. Scientists know that man and dogs have had a relationship for many years through their study of cave drawings, early pottery, and Asian ivory carvings.

Classifying dogs into categories began with the Romans. They had the following categories:

Today we classify dogs into similar categories. More than three hundred breeds of dogs exist worldwide. About 50 million dogs live in the United States. The American Kennel Club recognizes 148 breeds. These are divided into seven groups:

Dogs vary greatly from breed to breed. The smallest breed is the Chihuahua. It weighs only 4 pounds and is 5 inches high at the shoulders. The tallest breed is the Irish wolfhound. It is about thirty-nine inches tall at the shoulder. The St. Bernard is the heaviest dog. It can weigh about 200 pounds. The Yorkshire terrier has hair that can be two feet long while other breeds may have no hair at all such as the Mexican hairless. The fur may be curly or straight. Some dogs have two coats. The outer coat is long guard hairs and the undercoat is shorter and fluffy. These two coats protect the dog against rain and snow. Some dogs have a long muzzle while others have flat faces such as the Pug. Many breeds have pointed ears that stand up. Others and pendulous ears than hang down. Some dogs have long legs such as the greyhound. Others are extremely short such as the basset hound and the dachshund. The chow chow even has a black tongue.

Even though all these dogs vary greatly in appearance, they are identical in anatomy. They have 321 bones and 42 permanent teeth. Most dogs are able to detect scents far better than humans. They can also hear high-pitched sounds.

Dogs mature by six months old. The smaller breeds usually mature before the larger breeds. Female dogs have a period of six to twelve days approximately twice a year when they are ready to mate. This is known as the season of heat. Puppies are born sixty-three days later. An average litter has three to six puppies.

Puppies are born helpless. They are blind and can not stand. They sleep ninety percent of the day and the other ten percent is spent nursing. Their eyes open about 13 to 15 days after birth. Between 4 to 10 weeks the puppies become attached to their mother and siblings. Puppies should not be separated from their mothers until they are eight weeks old. New puppies should be taken to a veterinarian for a physical examination and to be given vaccinations. These include immunizations for:

hepatitis - viral disease that damages the liver
parvovirus - harms the intestinal tract
parainfluenza - causes respiratory
rabies - attacks the nervous system

roundworms - intestinal parasites
heartworm - damages heart tissue

When a puppy is six months old it should be spayed or neutered if it is a non breeding dog. The normal body temperature of a dog is 101.5º F. When a dog becomes too warm it sticks out its tongue and pants.

Puppies should be feed three times a day. They should have plenty of fresh drinking water. Dogs should get exercise. Dogs need a clean sleeping box. This can be made with blankets or shredded paper. If your dog is an outside pet, he will need a warm doghouse with a dry, warm floor. The floor may be covered with cedar shavings, sawdust, or blankets. Outdoor dogs need shelter from the cold, rain, and sun. Indoor dogs must be taken outside regularly for elimination. Dogs with short coats need to be brushed once a week. Long haired dogs need daily grooming. Small dogs usually live twelve or more years while larger dogs have a shorter lifespan.

Myth: Airline pilots never see UFOs, so they must not be real...

Fact: There have been many cases of pilot sightings ever since the 1940s...
The most convincing UFO reports were produced in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s by airline pilots, military pilots and ex-military pilots. These men had the training and the experience to be able to distinguish between normal sky sights and highly abnormal sights. They knew what airplanes looked like, and what meteors looked like, having seen them many times. Their visual observations were frequently supported by radar data which showed essentially the same thing. They were therefore able, on many occasions, to methodically eliminate conventional phenomena from consideration when trying to identify UFOs.

In those same decades, most UFO sightings were made in the daytime and frequently at close range, when shapes and surface features could be distinguished, thus making positive identification of normal sights easier and the descriptions of unusual sights more detailed. When all normal explanations had been eliminated, the witnesses could concentrate on those aspects of the experience which were most abnormal.

These abnormal aspects included the shapes of UFOs and their behavior. Most of the UFOs seen in the daytime were said to have had simple geometric shapes--discs, ovals, spheres, cylinders--and surfaces that looked like metal. Such shapes are not only nonexistent among known aircraft, but contrary to all known theories of flight, in most cases offering control and performance disadvantages rather than advantages.

Myth: UFOs are only reported by uneducated farmers in places you've never heard of...

Fact: A study by the U.S. Air Force showed that the most puzzling UFO reports came from people who had the best technical backgrounds. They are reported from everyplace where there are people, though fewer are seen from big cities because less of the sky is visible.
UFOs are reported by every type of person: uneducated yokels and PhDs; laborers and corporation presidents; truck drivers and airline captains; little kids, their parents and their grandparents. People in every state, every province and every country. They are reported by people who are convinced every light in the sky is an alien craft, and by other people who are convinced that no one as smart as them ever sees odd things in the sky.
People in rural areas may see more UFOs because they can see more of the sky and because they may look at the sky more often. Big city people have a poor view of the sky, and they are usually too busy to look up. Generally speaking, UFOs are seen by people who happen to be in the right place at the right time.

Myth:The U. S. Air Force investigated UFOs and concluded there was nothing to them...

Fact: The Air Force had an official UFO investigation from 1948 to 1969 (Projects Sign, Grudge and Blue Book), and collected more than 12,500 reports. It claims to have explained all but about 701 of them, but the facts of most of those reports strongly suggest that something important was seen.
The U.S. Air Force claims to have explained all but 701 of its reports, though by actual count the number is 584. But as so many of these were made by military and airline pilots, and other unexplained sightings involved radar tracking, they are the heart of the matter. Hundreds of other reports in the official files are alleged to have been explained, but are full of unscientific and illogical reasoning.
If so many cases are admittedly unexplained, they cannot be used to support any conclusions, as the nature and origins of unexplained cases are, by definition, unknown. If you add those cases that are only "possibly" explained, the total lacking convincing explanations tops 50%, which strongly suggests that the official investigation was a failure.

Myth:UFOs are only seen by Americans...

Fact: UFOs have been seen wherever there are people. Every continent has had its share, as has almost every country, though local interest plays a role in the apparent level of activity. Wherever there is someone interested in searching out UFO reports, they will be found, but that doesn't mean the investigator lives in a center of activity.
Some of the first UFOs were seen in Europe and the Pacific (see FAQs #5 and #6). Since then, they have been reported from all continents and probably all countries. There have been major waves of sightings not only in the USA, but in Great Britain, France, Belgium, Russia and elsewhere. Official and private organizations have been established in many countries to study their sightings, and their results are similar to other countries'. The same kinds and variety of UFOs are seen most places, and this has changed little over the years.
In late 1944, following a gradual build-up of activity, "foo-fighters" were reported in large numbers. Pilots of American and British bombers and night fighters over occupied France and over Germany described glowing balls that flew in formation with them for long periods and then just flew away. The first "explanation" was that they must be experimental German anti-aircraft weapons that were being tested prior to being put into action. But the war ended without a single "foo-fighter" showing unfriendliness. Explainers then tried to blame German jet and rocket fighters in night operations. But it was later determined that there may have been only a single night flight by any German jet, and none by their rocket-powered fighters.
At about the same time in the Pacific Theater of War, American bombers were followed for hours by bright lights that eventually turned away. Military officials said they were Japanese suicide planes, and that is how they show up in official mission reports. But suicide planes never flew at night, and they never followed our bombers for long periods of time without doing anything. The war ended with hundreds of reports still unexplained.

Few animals on Earth evoke the antipathy that mosquitoes do. Their itchy, irritating bites and nearly ubiquitous presence can ruin a backyard barbecue or a hike in the woods. They have an uncanny ability to sense our murderous intentions, taking flight and disappearing milliseconds before a fatal swat. And in our bedrooms, the persistent, whiny hum of their buzzing wings can wake the soundest of sleepers.

Beyond the nuisance factor, mosquitoes are carriers, or vectors, for some of humanity’s most deadly illnesses, and they are public enemy number one in the fight against global infectious disease. Mosquito-borne diseases cause millions of deaths worldwide every year with a disproportionate effect on children and the elderly in developing countries.

There are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes, but the members of three bear primary responsibility for the spread of human diseases. Anopheles mosquitoes are the only species known to carry malaria. They also transmit filariasis (also called elephantiasis) and encephalitis. Culex mosquitoes carry encephalitis, filariasis, and the West Nile virus. And Aedes mosquitoes, of which the voracious Asian tiger is a member, carry yellow fever, dengue, and encephalitis.

Mosquitoes use exhaled carbon dioxide, body odors and temperature, and movement to home in on their victims. Only female mosquitoes have the mouth parts necessary for sucking blood. When biting with their proboscis, they stab two tubes into the skin: one to inject an enzyme that inhibits blood clotting; the other to suck blood into their bodies. They use the blood not for their own nourishment but as a source of protein for their eggs. For food, both males and females eat nectar and other plant sugars.

Mosquitoes transmit disease in a variety of ways. In the case of malaria, parasites attach themselves to the gut of a female mosquito and enter a host as she feeds. In other cases, such as yellow fever and dengue, a virus enters the mosquito as it feeds on an infected human and is transmitted via the mosquito’s saliva to a subsequent victim.

The only silver lining to that cloud of mosquitoes in your garden is that they are a reliable source of food for thousands of animals, including birds, bats, dragonflies, and frogs. In addition, humans are actually not the first choice for most mosquitoes looking for a meal. They usually prefer horses, cattle, and birds.

All mosquitoes need water to breed, so eradication and population-control efforts usually involve removal or treatment of standing water sources. Insecticide spraying to kill adult mosquitoes is also widespread. However, global efforts to stop the spread of mosquitoes are having little effect, and many scientists think global warming will likely increase their number and range.

The lion is said to be majestic, the leopard ferocious and shrewd. But elegant and graceful best describes the cheetah. The cheetah is smaller than the other two cats, but by far the fastest at speeds of 70 miles per hour it can run faster than all other animals.
Now restricted to sub-Saharan Africa, wild cheetahs once were found in most of Africa, the plains of southern Asia, the Middle East and India.

Physical Characteristics
The cheetah is built for speed. It has long, slim, muscular legs, a small, rounded head set on a long neck, a flexible spine, a deep chest, nonretractable claws, special pads on its feet for traction and a long, tail for balance. Although fast, the cheetah cannot run at full speed for long distances (100 yards is about the limit) because it may overheat.
Cheetahs have distinctive black "tear stripes" that connect from the inside corner of each eye to the mouth that may serve as an antiglare device for daytime hunting.

Habitat
Cheetahs are found in open and partially open savannas.

Behavior
Cheetah mothers spend a long time teaching their young how to hunt small live antelopes are brought back to the cubs and released so they can chase and catch them. Unlike most other cats, the cheetah usually hunts during daylight, preferring early morning or early evening, but is also active on moonlit nights.
Cheetahs do not roar like lions, but they purr, hiss, whine and growl. They also make a variety of contact calls, the most common is a birdlike chirping sound.

Diet
Once a cheetah has made a kill, it eats quickly and keeps an eye out for scavengers lions, leopards, hyenas, vultures and jackals will occasionally take away their kills. Although cheetahs usually prey on the smaller antelopes such as Thomson's gazelles and impalas, they can catch wildebeests and zebras if hunting together. They also hunt hares and other small mammals and birds.
Although known as an animal of the open plains that relies on speed to catch its prey, research has shown that the cheetah depends on cover to stalk prey. The cheetah gets as close to the prey as possible, then in a burst of speed tries to outrun its quarry. Once the cheetah closes in, it knocks the prey to the ground with its paw and suffocates the animal with a bite to the neck.

Caring for the Young
With a life span of 10 to 12 years, the cheetah is basically a solitary animal. At times a male will accompany a female for a short while after mating, but most often the female is alone or with her cubs. Two to four cubs are born in a secluded place. Their eyes do not open for a week or two, and they are helpless at first. When the mother is hunting, she leaves them hidden, but by 6 weeks of age they are able to follow her. They are suckled for 2 to 3 months but begin to eat meat as early as 3 weeks.
By 4 months the cheetah cub is a tawny yellow and almost completely spotted; the tail has bands of black and by adulthood a white tip. The grayish mantle disappears more slowly; the last traces are still visible when the cubs are adult-sized at 15 months.

Predators
A shy creature that roams widely, the cheetah is not seen as easily as some other cats. Never numerous, cheetahs have become extinct in many areas, principally due to shrinking habitat, loss of species to prey upon, disease and a high rate of cub mortality. In some areas 50 to 75 percent of all cheetah cubs die before 3 months.

NASA was formed in 1958 and from the very start a number of it's astronauts and test pilots testified to sighting UFOs or craft of undetermined origin.Initially Joseph Walker was the first to announce a sighting -- he told the National Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Space Research in 1962 that he had an aerial encounter with two disc-shaped objects the previous month. He had actually filmed the encounter.
In April 1962, NASA pilot, Joseph Walker, filmed five cylindrical and disc-shaped objects from his X-15 aircraft.
Another test pilot reported an incident involving a formation of UFOs whilst flying at 314,000 feet.
NASA refused to reveal any evidence that might substantiate the pilots' claims -- photographs or films were never released.
In April 1964, two radar technicians watched UFOs following an unmanned Gemini capsule.
In 1965, the FBI received information from a confidential source that an informant at NASA was secretly divulging information on UFOs to two UFO researchers in Pittsburgh. According to FBI files:
"The source believes that the informant may be classified and had actually seen a film showing a missile separating and a UFO appearing on the screen. "The informant advised prior to the flight of Gemini 4 - watch out for something interesting because the spaceship had devices aboard to detect UFOs."
The FBI files infer that NASA was (is) withholding filmed evidence of UFOs, to which the general public is being denied access and the remarks about Gemini 4 is of special interest because James McDivitt, a pilot with Gemini 4, confirmed that during the mission he did see an "unidentified object."
On 4th December 1965, astronauts Borman and Lovell of the Gemini 7 mission were involved in this communication with Mission Control:
Gemini 7: Bogey at 10 o' clock high.
Mission Control: This is Houston, say again seven.
Gemini 7: We have bogey at 10 o' clock high.
Mission Control: Gemini 7 is that the booster or is that an actual sighting?
Gemini 7: We have several, looks like debris up here. Actual sighting.
Mission Control: Estimate distance or size?
Gemini 7: We also have booster in sight.
On 12 September 1966, Gemini astronauts, Richard Gordon and Charles Conrad reported to Mission Control that their craft was being observed by a UFO estimated at being about six miles away.
Unexplained sighting - Gemini 11
On 13th September 1966, astronauts Charles Conrad and Richards Gordon observed an object that remains unidentified to this day. The object, which they managed to capture on film, traveled so close to Gemini 11 that it would normally be very easy to identify but despite claims that it was, in fact, the Proton 3 satellite or parts thereof (claimed by NORAD) , the object still remains anomalous.
Following the Gemini missions the Apollo Space Program took effect, and on 20th July 1969 the astronauts of Apollo 11 took their first steps on the surface of the Moon. Although it was claimed that nothing unusual was seen by the astronauts, rumors that the crew were "never alone" whilst on the moon began to circulate. The following conversation is alleged to have taken place between Mission Control and the crew of Apollo 11:-
Apollo 11: What was it? What the hell was it? That's all I want to know. These babies were huge, sir... Oh God, you wouldn't believe it...
NASA : What... what the hell's going on?
Apollo 11: They are here, under the surface.
NASA : What's there? Mission Control calling Apollo 11.
Apollo 11: Roger, we're here, all three of us. But we have found some visitors... They've been here for quite a while judging by the installations... I'm telling you, there are other spacecraft out there. They're lined up in ranks on the far side of the crater's edge...
However, the evidence for the truth of this event is very doubtful, Otto Binder, a former NASA employee, claimed it was overheard by amateur radio enthusiasts who could access a confidential channel.
Neil Armstrong - the first man to set foot on the Moon - denies it. At approximately 6:30 AM on 17th March 1990, a radio ham from Baltimore, Donald Ratsch, was listening to transmissions from Discovery when he heard the following: "Houston, this is Discovery, we have a problem. We have a fire."
Shortly after, Ratsch claims he heard "Houston this is Discovery, we still have the Alien spacecraft under observance."
A former mission specialist with NASA , Bob Oeschler conducted an intense investigation into these events and concluded that the message had in fact been broadcast from the vicinity of Fort Meade in Maryland, an area where the US National Security Agency had its base.
The NSA has long been interested in UFOs, and Oeschler was of the opinion that the transmission was a deliberately set-up hoax for some intelligence purpose.
Further evidence later came to light, however, when a senior NASA source informed Oeschler that Discovery was involved in a UFO incident which lasted for eight hours. Also, apparently the electrical system on board Discovery experienced substantial problems during the encounter.

Amid an informative hour-long presentation today about the NASA Gemini Apollo, and Apollo-Soyuz programs, accompanied by some stock visuals, Stafford made several stone-faced quips throughout his presentation - among them: [at about 1:52pm EST]
"Then on to a place you know about... Area 51. That's where we had the dead aliens buried. We used to have them down at Roswell, but that got too much publicity, so we moved them there."
The reaction from the crowd was the expected laugh, while Stafford never flinched during the remarks. It could be stated that he appeared sincere, but the crowd took it as a joke, obviously, and he moved on without a pause and continued to talk about the F-16, the B-1, and B-2 and other aircraft tested at Area 51.
"People have been digging through the files and investigating for years now. The files are quite convincing. The only thing that's lacking is the official stamp," Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut.

In April 1979, Russian cosmonaut Victor Afanasyev sighted an alien craft whilst in space, he states:"I think we are not alone, something of extraterrestrial origin has visited Earth. The alien craft turned towards ours, followed us, and flew formation 25 to 29 metres away. We photographed the metallic engineering structure that was 40 metres long. The film was later confiscated."

Gennadij Strekhalov, another cosmonaut - MIR Space Station, relates:
"On the last two flights I saw something. During the flight of 1990, I called Gennadij Manakov, our commander, to come to the porthole - but we did not manage to put "film in the camera quickly enough.
"We looked on Newfoundland and the atmosphere was absolutely clear - suddenly a kind of sphere appeared. Beautiful, shiny and glittering - I saw it for 10 seconds - it disappeared. What was it, what size it had? I don't know, there was nothing I could compare with - it was a perfect sphere.
"I reported to the Mission Control Center, but I did not say I have seen a UFO - I said I saw a kind of unusual phenomenon. I had to be careful with the choice of my words - I don't want someone to speculate too much or quote me wrong."
During docking with the Russian Mir space station, astronaut Musa Manarov filmed an anomalous object, he stated:
"At some point during the filming, I caught sight of something I thought had separated from the ship… however, it was not very close, I know this because the camera was focused on infinity. Nothing could have broken away. There were no alarms going off. Later there were arguments over what possibly it could have been."

Yes, there have been ET visitations. There have been crashed craft. There have been material and bodies recovered. There has been a certain amount of reverse engineering that has allowed some of these craft, or some components, to be duplicated. And there is some group of people that may or may not be associated with government at this point, but certainly were at one time, that have this knowledge. Good close-up shots. There was no doubt in my mind that it was made someplace other than on this earth. ... They said, "We are going to show you a film that might help you put into perspective what you gentlemen have witnessed." They ran the film. The best clip on it showed the berets of the Fifth Special Forces in Vietnam with low scrub brush and a guy with a camera. He turns the camera and this giant, green, delta-shaped thing rises out of the brush very slowly and deliberately, below where they are, up to face level. Shrubbery and brush is falling off this massive thing. I'll never forget that in my life! ... Can any government keep secrets, let alone the US Government? The answer is unequivocally yes. The National Reconnaissance Office remained secret for many, many years. The mere existence of the NSA remained secret. The development of the atomic weapon remained secret until once you exploded one. I had classified documents the Air Force acknowledged. When I got members of Congress to help me open up more files, they were immediately destroyed, and I can prove this. I have been at locations where there were craft that did not originate on the face of this planet. While I was there, we saw living and dead bodies of entities that were not born on this planet. ... They are not hostile toward us. We are the enemy in this instance. It is not a scary story. The ETs have a perception of God. They are living, breathing creatures as mortal as you and me. They have families. They think, they have loves, they haves likes, they have dislikes, they have social culture. If we do not grow spiritually, we are forcing the situation where the entities will eventually make themselves known. ... Not more than two dozen UFOs had been retrieved by 1969 when I was briefed first. ... The entity was a little bigger than the 3, 3 ½ foot tall entities that are a lot of times reported. We walked over to one side of the lab and he said, "By the way, we've discovered a base on the backside of the moon." I was a little terrified, thinking to myself that if anybody walks in the room right now, I know we're in jeopardy because he shouldn't be giving me this information. Then he pulled out one of these mosaics and showed this base on the moon which had geometric shapes – there were towers, there were spherical buildings, and things that looked somewhat like radar dishes, but they were very large structures. I said, "Now this is supposed to be a system that tracks radar anomalies on Earth, right?" He says, "Yep, that's what it does." So I ask, "Then why are half of them pointed toward outer space, towards the moon, towards areas that are just blank space? What are they looking for?" He says, "You've got to have a need to know to know about that." ... We go back to a comment made by one of the astronauts when he stepped on the moon. It was the day after they got there. I was in a facility in California doing classified work. Our astronauts were doing a loop around the moon. I heard them say they had a bogey coming in at 11:00. It was another type of ship. I had access to special libraries, so we could go up to the library that the Air Force ran and sort of paw through top-secret material. Since I was interested in UFOs, I'd look to see what they had. I worked on the 1977 Carter White House Extraterrestrial Communication Project. It called for creation of central and regional databases under independent control on UFOs and EBEs – that is Extraterrestrial Biological Entities. The full management staff and the research institute had signed off knowingly on the proposal. ... I flew back from my meeting with the White House, at which this final approval had been given. And when I arrived back at my offices at SRI (Stanford Research Institue), I was called back into the office of the senior SRI official. The project was to be terminated. They had received direct communication from the Pentagon that if the study went forward, SRI's contracts would be terminated. These contracts were a substantial part of SRI's business at the time. The senior Pentagon liaison stated that the project was terminated because, "There are no UFOs." Sophia Hoffer asked me to come work at SAIC. I came in and there wasn't any paperwork to fill out. She just said, "You have the job." I didn't even know what department it was. These supervisors were playing games on their computer. There was nothing on their desks. A supervisor gave me letters to respond to. He said, "Oh, you know, just put a letter together and send it off." I opened up the files and even the letters that were in there were backdated several years saying the same exact form letter. It was talking about sometimes millions of dollars in contracts. It looked like there had never been any activity on it. That struck me as very odd. Sophia was in the position of one of the head scientists, which I thought was interesting, because I had met her working at a fabric store. They were getting a lot of money for doing nothing, and I didn't know where the money was going. Later, I put her last name in a computer to do a search. It took me to this DEA site. There was a picture of her with a different first name, same last name. But this was the deceased site for DEA or CIA agents. I was shocked. This person is supposed to have been dead for years. pp. 451 – 455.

The story I put out was very simple. We had in our possession a flying saucer. It was found on a ranch up north of Roswell. It was being flown to General Ramey's office. The information was given to me, almost verbatim, by Colonel Blanchard. He said, "I want you to give it to the local newspapers and radio stations, and do it post haste".…The cover-up was pretty well orchestrated. I think the thought of handling it that way came down from Washington, through channels. We were told that we were all wrong, that it was just a weather balloon. p. 478. More here.

UFO MESSAGE: DON'T MESS WITH NUCLEAR WEAPONS

US Air Force, FAA, Captain Robert Salas
My security guard says, "Sir, there's a glowing red object hovering right outside the front gate – I'm looking at it right now. I've got all the men out here with their weapons drawn." ... The nuclear-tipped warheads went into a "no-go" condition, meaning they could not be launched. We lost anywhere from between 16 to 18 ICBMs at the same time UFOs were in the area and were observed by airmen. Bob Kominski headed up the organization to look at all aspects of these shutdowns. He was told by his boss that the Air Force said, "Stop the investigation. Do no more on this, and do not write a final report." So this thing [UFO] fires a beam of light at the warhead, hits it, and then it moves to the other side and fires another beam of light, and then moves again and fires another beam, and another. And the warhead tumbles out of space. What message would I interpret from this? Don't mess with nuclear warheads. ... We were getting reports of visits by UFOs over the storage facilities and even some of the manufacturing facilities. That went on continuously. We found that formal reports were few and far between. Security people were reluctant to report because of the protocol and the bureaucracy involved in reporting them. ... I learned about incidents involving nuclear weapons. Among these incidents were those where a couple of nuclear weapons that were sent into space were destroyed by the extraterrestrials. There was one incident when we exploded a nuclear weapon over the Pacific in '61, I believe. This was one that the extraterrestrials were really concerned about because it affected our ionosphere. In either the very end of the ‘70s or the early ‘80s, we attempted to put a nuclear weapon on the moon and explode it for scientific measurements. [This] was not acceptable to the extraterrestrials. They destroyed the weapon as it went toward the moon. The idea of any explosion of a nuclear weapon in space by any Earth government was not acceptable to the extraterrestrials. In my following of unusual aerial phenomena for the past 50 years, there seems to be some reason to discredit very viable and very reputable witnesses when they say something is unidentified. ... By humidifying air, I was getting 20 to 30% improvement in efficiency over a car engine. I started selling these devices. The Federal Trade Commission performed an illegal act. As a rule, [places where UFOs appear] are objects of strategic significance – rocket complexes, scientific test establishments – in other words, there is a high concentration of advanced science and to some degree danger. I know that in some places they even learned to create a situation which would deliberately provoke the appearance of a UFO. ... They came up with a table with pictures of all the shapes of UFOs that had ever been recorded – about fifty – ranging from ellipses and spheres to something resembling spaceships. ... Eisenhower wanted somebody to be in charge. The CIA was working primarily for itself. Most of the military intelligence directors were working for themselves. ... Secretary of Defense Forestall was the first powerful person that was eliminated because he was going to release information [on UFOs] – and nobody has ever paid for that crime. ... Who was stationed at Roswell? The only nuclear bomb squadron in the world. We focused several powerful radars on the UFOs, and it caused two of them to crash. One of them had two aliens on it. One of them was wounded or hurt, the other was alive then, but before we could get him anywhere, he had passed on. ... I would interview people who claimed they had seen something, and try to convince them they hadn't, or that they were hallucinating. If that didn't work, another team would give all the threats – threaten them and their family. They would be in charge of discrediting them, making them look foolish. Now, if that didn't work, there was another team that put an end to that problem, one way or another. ... UFOs are both extraterrestrial and manmade. ... Even back in Tesla's time, we had free energy. It's not that our government doesn't want us to know that there are other people on other planets. What they don't want us to know is that this free energy is available to everybody. That's the greatest secret. So secrecy about the UFOs is because of the energy issue. Some would like for us to believe that the aliens are our enemy now. There's no proof that I have ever read in any official document where – unless they were attacked – they ever shot. We don't have a threat from Russia anymore, but if we keep shooting at those aliens, we might have a threat from them. These UFOs were huge. They would just come to a stop and do a 60 degree, 45 degree, 10 degree turn, and then immediately reverse this action. ... During the Apollo landing, Neil Armstrong says, "They're here. They are right over there and look at the size of those ships. And, it is obvious they don't like us being here." ... When I was working with the Skunkworks, we signed an agreement with the National Security Agency and the National Security Council, as well as the CIA. And we kept very quiet about this. Anti-gravitational research was going. ... We know that there were some captured craft from 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico. And, yeah, they were real. And, yes, we really did get some technology from them. And, yes, we really did put it to work. ... We knew each other from what we call unseen industry. We can term it black, deep black, or hidden. The knowledge I have of these technologies came from the craft that were captured here. I didn't see the craft, nor did I see the bodies. But I certainly know some of the people that did. There was no question that there are peoples, or beings, from outside the planet. Are these ET people hostile? Well, if they were hostile, with their weaponry they could have destroyed us a long time ago. ... We got these things that are handheld scanners that scan the body and determine what the condition is. We can also treat from the same scanner. Are these things real? The simulator wasn't actually functional until around 1958. The simulator that they used was for the extraterrestrial craft they had, which is a 30-meter one that crashed in Kingman, Arizona, back in 1953 or 1952. I was inside the actual alien craft for a start-up. Over the last 40 years or so, not counting simulators – I'm talking about actual craft – there are probably two or three dozen, and various sizes that we built. pp. 384 – 387.

This craft was what they called the Alien Reproduction Vehicle. It was also nicknamed the Flux Liner. This antigravity propulsion system – this flying saucer – was one of three that were in this hangar at Norton Air Force Base. We have found a patent filed by James King Jr., and this patent looks just like this system, except that instead of having a dome for a crew compartment, it has a cylinder in the center. It has the same flat bottom and sloping sides. The patent was filed initially in 1960 and was secured in 1967. ... There is a scientist in Utah by the name of Moray B. King – he wrote a book called Tapping the Zero Point Energy. Zero-point energy is actually what keeps the electrons energized around the atomic structure of everything in the universe. When you do that, if you're in a very tight compartment, you sign a statement that you will not divulge the existence of the project or even answer a question that could acknowledge the existence of the project. I know people today that worked on one of the things I worked on, and if you asked them about it, they would say, "No, I have no idea what you're talking about." There was absolutely no question that he had a system that produced 50 kilowatts out of a 55-pound box. There are all kinds of skullduggery that happened there. The Russians even tried to kidnap him at one time. Gabriel Crone invented a true negative resister, working on a Navy contract for Stanford University. He was never permitted to reveal the exact way that he constructed it. There is real stuff in cold fusion. 600 experiments worked, for goodness sake. Probably 50 inventors have invented free energy systems. ... I was the Chief Science Writer at the MIT news office when the cold fusion story out of Utah broke on March 23, 1989. It turns out the cold fusion effect was real. One day while at MIT, I inadvertently was looking through some piles of paper by physicists doing their repeat of the Pons-Fleischmann experiment. To my utter astonishment, I can remember sitting at my desk and actually seeing two sheets of paper, one dated July 10 and another July 13. The July 10 control experiment showed in the raw data excess heat. But then, on July 13, it was shifted completely. It was altered. Clear fraud – no question. I asked for a review at MIT. I got nowhere. Yet today, MIT data is held up. In fact, what Pons and Fleischmann found was only the tip of an iceberg. There are huge quantities of technical literature published by proponents, and a much smaller amount by the people who found so-called negative results. There has been an extraordinary abrogation of legal responsibility at the Patent Office and the Department of Energy on the matter of cold fusion. Bien estimado lector, recordará Ud. que a finales de Octubre(2012) publicábamos desde éste mismo Site la noticia de que un "OVNI" de por lo menos2 km de largo salía del cráterdel volcán Popocatéptl enMéxico (clic para ver), días más tarde compartíamos un Post sobre los "Nuevos OVNI´s" que continuaban merodeando el mismo cráter y en donde ésta noticiatambién era difundida por la misma cadena televisiva en México, vale decir por Televisa (clic para ver).

Al respecto muchosinvestigadores han venido sosteniendo que en efecto se tratan de OVNI´s (quizá de procedencia extraterrestre) que efectivamente vienenmerodeando e ingresando a éste conocido volcán. Ud. por supuesto conoce ya nuestra postura frente a éste caso.

El pasado 15 de Noviembre (2012) un nuevo video ha venido circulando muy fuerte On Line, nos referimos a un video que para los denominados inBestigadores y difusores del tema presupone el Santo Gial del caso, se trata de un OVNI No entrando sino saliendo del cráter del Popocatéptl (!).

Por supuesto el video es inmediatamente asociado con el pasadosismo que ocurrió el mismo día en México (!), dando a entendertendenciosamente que existiría algún tipo de relación entre OVNI´s yterremotos. Para muchos éste reciente video evidenciaría que NO se habría tratado de algún error en los anteriores casos y que en realidad los OVNI´s "extraterrestres" entran y salen del volcán con toda normalidad y habitualidad.

Como No vamos a perder el tiempo en analizar éste nuevovideo y dedicarle un Post alcaso queremos compartir con Ud. una investigación realizada por Oxlack Castro y su equipo de investigación desde México. Sin duda nos ponemos de pie yaplaudimos éste trabajo impecablemente realizado. ¿Quién es el ex agente especial Richard C. Doty de la agencia AFOSI Air Force Office of Special Investigations (Oficina de Investigaciones Especiales de la Fuerza Aérea)? No es fácil encontrar información sobre Doty antes de 1980. La única información disponible que hay son algunos restos en varios libros de ovnis además de la información que puede obtenerse de cuatro archivos que están en Internet. Estos archivos consisten en los supuestos documentos de licenciamiento de la Fuerza Aérea de Doty, una entrevista telefónica que Phil Klass mantuvo con Doty el 8 de enero de 1988, y dos cartas, supuestamente escritas por Doty (3/3/89 y 4/4/89). Sin embargo, no hay mucha información en estos archivos. En la transcripción de la entrevista telefónica con Klass, Doty dice que su padre, Edward Doty, estaba en la Fuerza Aérea, fue un investigador del Proyecto Libro Azul, estuvo en la Base Aérea de Holloman de 1962 a 1964, y participó en la investigación de 1964 en el caso del OVNI que aterrizó en Socorro, Nuevo México. Sin embargo, en una carta de fecha 3/3/89, Doty dice que era un tío suyo, no su padre, que fue un investigador del Libro Azul En su carta del 3/3/89, Doty dice: Mientras estuve asignado al Distrito 70 de la Oficina de Investigaciones Especiales en la sede de Wiesbaden, Alemania Occidental, desempeñé funciones como especialista de contraespionaje. En 1986, estuve involucrado en una operación delicada, donde traté de desempeñar determinadas tareas que permitían a nuestro equipo atrapar a posibles agentes extranjeros que trabajan contra los intereses de los Estados Unidos. Mis supervisores, sin embargo, consideraron mis acciones como no autorizadas. Por lo tanto, me pidieron que abandonara la AFOSI, lo que hice voluntariamente. Acepté un puesto en la Base Aérea de Kirtland en Albuquerque, Nuevo México, donde mi hijo estaba residiendo con mi ex cónyuge. Al parecer, Doty estuvo en Kirtland, al menos, dos veces. Sabemos que él estuvo allí en 1980, ya que es cuando tuvo lugar el asunto de Bennewitz, y aquí dice que se trasladó de nuevo a Kirtland en 1986. En una de las cartas dice que no vive en Nuevo México, que sólo mantiene un servicio de reenvío de allí. Una de sus cartas dice que su trabajo actual consiste en investigaciones, pero que no se trata sobre Ovnis. Una fuente no confirmada, dijo que es un policía estatal de Nuevo México en Grants. La primera vez que oímos de Richard C. Doty es en el verano de 1980. Él era el oficial de la AFOSI que tomó el informe de Craig Weitzel sobre el avistamiento OVNI cerca de Kirtland. Recordarás nuestro artículo “Avistamientos de la Base Aérea de Kirtland, Segunda Parte” que, más tarde, en 1980, la APRO (Comité Nacional de Investigaciones sobre Fenómenos Aéreos), recibió una carta anónima que exageraba considerablemente el informe de Weitzel, transformándolo de un informe de avistamiento a un encuentro cercano. Poco tiempo después del avistamiento de Weitzel, Paul Bennewitz se puso en contacto con la Base Aérea de Kirtland con sus historias de Ovnis sobre Manzano y en relación a la recepción de comunicaciones extraterrestres de baja frecuencia. Una vez más, el Agente Doty de la AFOSI era el oficial asignado a la investigación. De acuerdo con William Moore, la época que fue enviado a investigar las declaraciones de Bennewitz en 1982, Doty había estado sustentando la desinformación durante dos años. Moore afirma además que fue contratado por alguien que se hacía llamar Falcon para ayudar en el suministro de desinformación acerca de los OVNIs de Bennewitz, y que su enlace con Falcon era Doty. Parece, sin embargo, que Moore ya sabía de Doty por lo menos de hace un año, ya que afirma que Doty le dió una copia del Documento del Proyecto Acuario en Febrero de 1981, de acuerdo con Curtis Peebles. La información aquí es muy confusa, y está, de la mejor forma que puedo decir, basada enteramente en las declaraciones de Moore. Richard Doty, dice que, todo lo que hacía, lo hacía bajo órdenes. * Si es así, ¿cuál era el propósito de esas órdenes? * Parece casi seguro que la intención era apartar la atención de los avistamientos en Manzano y Coyote Canyon. ¿Por qué? * ¿Qué se estaba protegiendo? * ¿Estaban, en realidad, la Fuerza Aérea probando Ovnis en Manzano? * ¿O estaban los OVNIs visitando Manzano? * ¿O se estaban probando en Manzano armas de alto secreto de la Iniciativa de Defensa Estratégica (IDE), del inglés: Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI)? Una cosa es cierta. Casi al mismo tiempo de comenzar la relación entre Richard C. Doty y William L. Moore, las copias de los supuestos documentos clasificados del gobierno sobre Ovnis de repente empezaron a aparecer, como veremos en la siguiente parte de esta serie:

Falcon y el Encubrimiento – Segunda Parte

No creamos ya más en demonios que embaucan y nos confunden con esos equívocos, que nos guardan la promesa en la palabra y nos roban la esperanza. (Macbeth, acto 5, escena VII, línea 48 – William Shakespeare) Acta I: A finales de 1972, según el libro Alien Contact de Timothy Good, oficiales de la Fuerza Aérea de EE.UU propusieron a los productores de cine Robert Emenegger y Allan Sandler hacer un documental sobre ovnis. La Fuerza Aérea, al parecer, estaba lista para “divulgar los secretos confidenciales”, lista para abrir las puertas de “Hangar 18″ y el “Blue Room”. Según ellos, el Pentágono invitó a ambos productores, donde se reunieron con los coroneles William Coleman y George Weinbrenner de la Fuerza Aérea, quienes les mostraron películas y fotografías de los extraterrestres Grises, entre ellos uno que dijo que sobrevivió a un accidente y vivió durante tres años . Luego, en 1973, Emenegger y Sadler fueron invitados a la Base Aérea de Norton, en California, donde se reunieron con el jefe de la Oficina de Investigaciones Especiales de la Fuerza Aérea (AFOSI – el mismo departamento para el que Richard Doty había trabajado …) y Paul Shartle, el ex jefe de seguridad y jefe del programa audiovisual en la Base Aérea de Norton. En esta reunión, se les dijo que existía una película de Abril de 1964 sobre un aterrizaje de un Ovni en la Base Aérea de Holloman, en Alamogordo (Nuevo México). Cuando la nave aterrizó, tres extraterrestres con los ojos como de un gato salieron y se comunicaron con el comandante de la base y dos científicos usando algún tipo de “traductor”. A Emenegger y Sadker se les prometió el uso de esta película para su documental, pero poco después se retiró la oferta. En una entrevista de 1988 a Paul Sharle, este manifestó que la Fuerza Aérea le había dicho que la película era “material teatral” que se había comprado para hacer una película de entrenamiento. En una entrevista telefónica con Phil Klass, Richard Doty supuestamente dijo que su familia estaba en la Base Aérea de Holloman en abril de 1964, presumiblemente porque su padre, Edward Doty, estaba estacionado allí. Acta II: El 9 de febrero de 1978, un curioso documento, una supuesta copia de papel carbón con un informe de un incidente de un oficial de la Fuerza Aérea de EE.UU. llegó a la oficina de The National Enquirer en Lantana, Florida. Junto al documento había una carta sin firmar de fecha “29 de enero” El informe y la carta describían un encuentro cercano con un extraterrestre, que supuestamente tuvo lugar en la Base Aérea de Ellsworth, en Dakota del Sur el 16 de noviembre de 1977. Aunque los nombres mencionados en el informe eran los de las personas reales en servicio activo en Ellsworth, incluso The National Enquirer estimó que el informe era un fraude. Dijeron: Hemos encontrado más de 20 discrepancias o errores en el informe – nombres erróneos, números, cargos, trazados físicos, etc. Si se hubiese llevado a cabo la alerta de la Opción de Seguridad mencionada en el informe, habría involucrado a todo el personal de seguridad y a todo el mundo en la base y en Rapid City (más de 45.000 habitantes) se habría sabido. Según los supuestos documentos del licenciamiento de Doty de la Fuerza Aérea, éste estaba estacionado en Ellsworth de 1976 a 1978. Según las revelaciones de Jacques Vallee, William Moore afirmó que Doty le había confesado haber falsificado el documento de Ellsworth. Sin embargo, supuestamente hay un informe del Inspector General sobre este incidente que indica que el autor no era Doty, sino otra persona. Acta III Según el libro Out There de Howard Blum, William Moore comenzó a interesarse en los ovnis cuando era un adolescente, después de leer sobre el “accidente azteca” en el libro Behind the Flying Sauchers de Frank Scully. Ingresó en la NICAP (Comisión Nacional de Investigación sobre Fenómenos Aéreos), mientras estaba en la universidad de Thiel en Pennsylvania en los años sesenta, y sigue siendo un miembro después de que comenzara su carrera como docente en Nueva York. En los años setenta, Bill Moore, co-escribió el Experimento Filadelfia con Charles Berlitz. El libro se convirtió en un best-seller, y en 1979, Moore decidió renunciar a su puesto de profesor en Minnesota y probar suerte como escritor a tiempo completo, con su tema preferido, los Ovnis. En Arizona, se unió a la Organización de Lorenzen con sede en Tucson, la APRO (Aerial Phenomena Research Organization – Organización para la Investigación de Fenómenos Aéreos), y pronto se convirtió en uno de sus directores. Se pasaba la mayor parte de su tiempo en investigar los acontecimientos que habían ocurrido en 1947 en el vecino Nuevo México para otro libro que estaba escribiendo con Berlitz, el Incidente de Roswell. El conocido ufólogo, Stanton Friedman, también ayudó en la investigación para este libro. El libro se publicó en 1980 y también fue un best-seller. Después de este libro, Moore rompió con Berlitz y se unió con Friedman para continuar investigando el caso Roswell durante varios años. Después de que el libro se hiciera famoso, Moore apareció en varios programas de radio sobre el tema de Roswell y los Ovnis. Cuenta que en dos acasiones tras aparecer en la radio en el mes de Septiembre de 1980, recibió llamadas telefónicas de alguien quien sólo dijo: “Eres la única persona que he oído que parece estar en el camino correcto”. El segundo participante le sugirió encontrarse con él. Moore se dirigió a una cafetería en Albuquerque y se reunió, por primera vez, con el individuo llamado Falcon.

Falcon, del que habló Moore, un individuo bien situado dentro de la comunidad de inteligencia que afirmaba estar conectado directamente a un proyecto de alto nivel del gobierno que se ocupan de los OVNIs, se reunió con Moore varias veces durante meses y luego le propuso un trato: Él y el grupo que representaba ayudarían a Moore en su búsqueda de la verdad sobre los Ovnis si Moore aceptaba ayudarles, fomentando la desinformación, e informándoles sobre, ….. Paul Bennewitz! Según Moore, su contacto durante este episodio no fue el propio Falcon, sino …. Richard C. Doty! El era un amigo de Paul Bennewitz, mientras informaba sobre sus actividades a la APRO y a Doty, y suministrando a Bennewitz desinformación de Doty y/o de Falcon. Moore dijo después que aceptó esta oferta porque consideró que era su única oportunidad para obtener de “dentro” información sobre las actividades del Gobierno sobre los Ovnis. Acta IV En Febrero de 1981, según el libro Watch The Skies de Curtis Peebles, Richard C. Doty le dio a Bill Moore una copia en teletipo de un documento clasificado que hablaba sobre la secreta investigación del gobierno con los Ovnis, el Proyecto Acuario y de algo llamado MJ-12. Esta fue la primera vez que se hizo mención de estos dos términos. Al año siguiente, Bill Moore y un periodista ya retirado del Nacional Enquirer llamado Robert Pratt, escribieron una novela sobre las aventuras de un oficial de inteligencia de la Fuerza Aérea llamada: El Proyecto Acuario. Según Curtis Peebles, la novela no terminó por escribirse y tampoco por publicarse. En la primavera de 1982 una cadena de televisión, la KPIX de San Francisco, contrató a Bill Moore como asesor para un programa especial sobre OVNIs. Moore, que ahora vive en Los Ángeles, fue apoyado por sus amigos Jaime Shandera, un productor de televisión y el ufólogo Stanton Friedman. Moore dio una copia en teletipo del Proyecto Acuario a KPIX, y ellos le pidieron a la Fuerza Aérea que verificaran su autenticidad. KPIX fue informado por la Oficina de Investigaciones Especiales de la Fuerza Aérea (AFOSI) de que el documento era una falsificación y que había varias irregularidades que lo identificaron como tal. Moore, según Puebles, admitió haber reescrito el documento y haber añadido un “sello de la fecha oficial”. Moore organizó una reunión con Doty que incluía a Ron Lakis de la KIPX y Peter Gersten, un abogado especializado en encomiendas para la Ley de Libertad de Información (FOIA) para los documentos OVNI. Doty les dijo presuntamente que había estado investigando los Ovnis durante varios años para la AFOSI (Oficina de Investigaciones Especiales de la Fuerza Aérea) y que tenía acceso a documentos de alto secreto en relación con los Ovni. Doty también les dijo acerca de unos tratados secretos con extraterrestres y que el Proyecto Acuario consistía en el contacto con los extraterrestres. Según sus datos, dijo que sabía acerca de tres naves que se habían estrellado y que el gobierno estaba en posesión de los cuerpos extraterrestres. En esta parte en concreto hablan sobre la Base Aérea de Wright-Patterson (conectada muy de cerca con el Projecto Serpo) y el ex-oficial de la Fuerza Aérea Robert M. Collins Acta V En la primavera de 1983, según el libro “Alien Contact” (Contacto Extraterrestre) de Timothy Good, William Moore recibió una llamada telefónica de alguien que le instaba a ver información importante si seguía las instrucciones que le daba. Los directrices a seguir consistían en trasladarse de un aeropuerto a otro e ir recibiendo los procedimientos a seguir por teléfono para el siguiente destino, para finalmente terminar en un motel en el Estado de Nueva York. En un momento dado, un individuo llegó a la habitación del motel con un sobre que contenía once páginas. Este le dijo a Moore: “Tienes exactamente 19 minutos. Puedes hacer lo que quieras con el material durante este tiempo, cuando sea la hora he de tenerlo de vuelta. Después de eso, usted es libre de hacer lo que desee con el mismo”. Las once páginas eran un documento con el sello “TOP SECRET/ORCON” titulado “Rama Ejecutiva. Caso: Proyecto Acuario, 14 de Junio de 1947”. A Moore se le permitió fotografiar los documentos y leer su contenido en una grabadora. La documentación notificaba la recuperación de una nave extraterrestre estrellada y un alienígena con vida en 1949, y la recuperación de otra nave extraterrestre en pleno funcionamiento en Utah en 1958. Se detallaban varios “proyectos” en relación con los extraterrestres y los Ovnis: Proyecto Bando: Estudios médicos de los cuerpos extraterrestres recuperados de los accidentes y de los alienígenas rescatados con vida del accidente en 1949 en Nuevo México. Proyecto Sigma: Un programa para establecer comunicaciones con los extraterrestres. Proyecto Pájaro de Nieve: Experimentación y pruebas de vuelo de una nave extraterrestre recuperada. Proyecto Pounce: Un proyecto de evaluación general. Acta VI En Abril de 1983, Linda Moulton Howe, que había producido un excelente documental sobre las Mutilaciones de Ganado llamado “Strange Harvest”, estaba trabajando en un nuevo guión sobre Ovnis para HBO. La noche antes de su reunión con la gente de HBO, Howe fue a cenar con un abogado llamado Peter Gersten. Gersten le dijo a Howe que se había reunido con Richard C. Doty, un agente de la Oficina de Investigaciones Especiales (la AFOSI) en la Base Aérea de Kirtland, y quizás Doty estaría dispuesto a hablar ante una cámara o de alguna otra manera sobre el Incidente Ovni que supuestamente había ocurrido en la Base Aérea de Ellsworth, en Dakota del Sur en 1978. Gersten se ofreció a llamarle y preguntarle si estaría dispuesto a reunirse con Howe. Se hicieron arreglos para que Howe volara hacía Albuquerque el 9 de Abril, en donde Doty se reuniría con ella en el aeropuerto. Doty no estaba allí cuando ella llegó, fue más tarde cuando la recogió en la casa de Jerry Miller. Miller, un antiguo investigador del Proyecto Libro Azul, estaba familiarizado con Doty. De camino de la casa de Miller hasta la Base Aérea de Kirtland, Howe le preguntó a Doty, cuya expresión era a la vez desafiante y nerviosa, que si sabía algo sobre el aterrizaje de Holloman. Doty dijo que ocurrió el 25 de Abril de 1964, apenas 12 horas después del famoso avistamiento notificado por el policía Lonnie Zamora en Socorro (Nuevo México). El personal científico y militar sabía acerca de un aterrizaje que iba a ocurrir, pero “alguien hizo estallar el tiempo y las coordenadas” y una “nave avanzada de exploración militar” aterrizó en el lugar y en la hora equívoca y fue visto por Zamora. El extraño objeto volador no identificado fotografiado en Los Cristianos parece desafiar la lógica en este momento,debido a su extraña forma.

Se puede ver en las fotos que este ovni es de forma alargada y de color oscuro. Tenía dos apéndices que sobresalen de cada extremo que se asemejaba a las pinzas o tenazas de un escorpión.

En el extremo opuesto, el OVNI tenia una larga cola que se asemeja a la cola o el aguijón de un escorpión.

Ever since the invention of the phonograph in 1876, music has been a popular source of home entertainment. In recent years, the compact disc has become the playback medium of choice for recorded music.

A compact disc, or CD, is an optical storage medium with digital data recorded on it. The digital data can be in the form of audio, video, or computer information. When the CD is played, the information is read or detected by a tightly focused light source called a laser (thus the name optical medium). This article will focus on audio compact discs, which are used to play back recorded music.

The history of the compact disc can be traced back to the development of electronic technology and particularly digital electronic technology in the 1960s. Although the first applications of this technology were not in the recording area, it found increasing use in audio components as the technology evolved.

During the same period, many companies started experimenting with optical information storage and laser technology. Among these companies, electronic giants Sony and Philips made notable progress in this area.

By the 1970s, digital and optical technologies had reached a level where they could be combined to develop a single audio system. These technologies provided solutions to the three main challenges faced by the developers of digital audio.

The first challenge was to find a suitable method for recording audio signals in digital format, a process known as audio encoding. A practical method of audio encoding was developed from the theories published by C. Shannon in 1948. This method, known as pulse code modulation (PCM), is a technique that samples a sound during a short time interval and converts the sample to a numerical value that is then modulated or stored for later retrieval.

The storing of audio signals in digital form requires a large amount of data. For instance, to store one second of music requires one million bits of data. The next challenge, therefore, was to find a suitable storage medium to accommodate any significant amount of sound. The solution to this problem came in the form of optical discs. An optical disc can store large amounts of data tightly compressed together. For example, one million bits of data on a CD can occupy an area smaller than a pinhead. This information is read by means of a laser beam that is capable of focusing on a very narrow area as small as 1/2500th of an inch.

The final challenge of digital audio was to process the densely packed information on compact discs quickly enough to produce continuous music. The solution was provided by the development of integrated circuit technology, which allow the processing of millions of computations in just micro-seconds.

By the late 1970s, a common set of standards for the optical storage discs had been developed by the joint efforts of Sony and Philips. A consortium of 35 hardware manufacturers agreed to adopt this standard in 1981 and the first compact discs and compact disc players were introduced in the market in 1982.

Raw Materials

A compact disc is a deceptively simple looking device considering the technology required to make it. CDs consist of three layers of materials:

A base layer made of a polycarbonate plastic.
A thin layer of aluminum coating over the polycarbonate plastic.
A clear protective acrylic coating over the aluminum layer.

Some manufacturers use a silver or even gold layer instead of the aluminum layer in the manufacture of their compact discs.

Design

The compact disc is designed strictly according to the standards established by Sony and Philips in order to maintain universal compatibility. A CD is 4.72 inches (120 millimeters) in diameter and .047 inches (1.2 millimeters) thick. The positioning hole in the middle is .59 of an inch (15 millimeters) in diameter. A CD usually weighs around .53 of an ounce (15 grams).

A standard CD can store up to 74 minutes of data. However, most CDs contain only about 50 minutes of music, all of which is recorded on only one side of the CD (the underside). The recorded data on the CD takes the form of a continuous spiral starting from the inside and moving outward. This spiral or track consists of a series of indentations called pits, separated by sections called lands. A tiny laser beam moving along the track reflects light back to a photo sensor. The sensor sees more light when it is on a land than when it is on a pit, and these variations in light intensity are converted into electrical signals that represent the music originally recorded.

The Manufacturing
Process

Compact discs must be manufactured under very clean and dust free conditions in a "clean room," which is kept free from virtually all dust particles. The air in the room is specially filtered to keep out dirt, and occupants of the room must wear special clothing. Because an average dust particle is 100 times larger than the average pit and land on a CD, even the smallest dust particle can render a disc useless.

Preparing the disc master

1 The original music is first recorded onto a digital audio tape. Next, the audio program is transferred to a 3/4-inch (1.9 centimeters) video tape, and then data (called subcodes) used for indexing and tracking the music is added to the audio data on the tape. At this point, the tape is called a pre-master.
2 The pre-master tape will be used to create the disc master (also called the glass master), which is a disc made from specially prepared glass. The glass is polished to a smooth finish and coated with a layer of adhesive and a layer of photoresist material. The disc is approximately 9.45 inches (240 millimeters) in diameter and .24 of an inch (six millimeters) thick. After the adhesive and photoresist are applied, the disc is cured in an oven.
3 Next, both the pre-master tape and the disc master are put into a complex laser cutting machine. The machine plays back the audio program on the pre-master tape. As it does so, the program is transferred to a device called a CD encoder, which in turn generates an electrical signal. This signal powers a laser beam, which exposes or "cuts" grooves into the photoresist coating on the glass disc (the disc master).
4 The grooves that have been exposed are then etched away by chemicals; these etched grooves will form the pits of the CD's surface. A metal coating, usually silver, is then applied to the disc. The disc master now contains the exact pit-and-land track that the finished CD will have.

Electroforming

5 After etching, the disc master undergoes a process called electroforming, in which another metal layer such as nickel is deposited onto the disc's surface. The phrase "electro" is used because the metal is deposited using an electric current. The disc is bathed in an electrolytic solution, such as nickel solphamate, and as the electric current is applied, a layer of metal forms on the disc master. The thickness of this metal layer is strictly controlled.
6 Next, the newly applied metal layer is pulled apart from the disc master, which is put aside. The metal layer, or father, contains a negative impression of the disc master track; in other words, the track on the metal layer is an exact replica, but in reverse, of the track on the disc master.
7 The metal father then undergoes further electroforming to produce one or more mothers, which are simply metal layers that again have positive impressions of the original disc master track. Using the same electroforming process, each mother then produces a son (also called a stamper) with a negative impression of the track. It is the son that is then used to create the actual CD.
8 After being separated from the mother, the metal son is rinsed, dried, polished and put in a punching machine that cuts out the center hole and forms the desired outside diameter.

Replication

9 The metal son is then put into a hollow cavity—a die—of the proper disc shape in an injection molding machine. Molten polycarbonate plastic is then poured into this die to form around the metal son. Once cooled, the plastic is shaped like the son, with the pits and grooves—once again in a positive impression of the original disc master track—formed into one side.
10 The center hole is then punched out of plastic disc, which is transparent at this stage. Next, the disc is scanned for flaws such as water bubbles, dust particles, and warps. If a flaw is found, the disc must be discarded.
11 If the disc meets the quality standards, I it is then coated with an extremely thin, reflective layer of aluminum. The coating is applied using vacuum deposition. In this process, aluminum is put into a vacuum chamber and heated to the point of evaporation, which allows it to be applied evenly to the plastic disc.
12 Finally, a clear acrylic plastic is applied to the disc to help protect the underlying layers from physical damage such as scratches. After the label is printed, generally using a silk-screening process, the compact disc is complete and ready for packaging and shipment.

Quality Control

A compact disc is a very precise and accurate device. The microscopic size of the data does not allow for any errors in the manufacturing process. The smallest of dust particles can render a disc unreadable.

The first quality control concern is to ensure that the clean room environment is properly monitored, with controlled temperature, humidity, and filtering systems. Beyond that, quality control checkpoints are built into the manufacturing process. The disc master, for instance, is inspected for smoothness and its photoresist surface for proper thickness by means of laser equipment. At later stages in the process, such as before and after the aluminum coating is deposited and after the protective acrylic coating is applied, the disc is checked automatically for warps, bubbles, dust particles, and encoding errors on the spiral track. This mechanical checking is combined with human inspection using polarized light, which allows the human eye to spot defective pits in the track.

In addition to checking the discs, the equipment used to manufacture them must be carefully maintained. The laser cutting machine, for instance, must be very stable, because any vibration would make proper cutting impossible. If strict quality control is not maintained, the rejection rate of CDs can be very high.

The Future

The massive storage capabilities, accuracy of data, and relative immunity from wear and tear will continue to make compact discs a popular medium for music and video applications. The hottest new product stirring public interest is CD-Interactive or CD-I, a multimedia system that allows users to interact with computers and television.

The first machines to be operated by remote control were used mainly for military purposes. Radio-controlled motorboats, developed by the German navy, were used to ram enemy ships in WW I. Radio controlled bombs and other remote control weapons were used in WW II.Once the wars were over, United States scientists experimented to find nonmilitary uses for the remote control. Flashmatic: The First Wireless TV Remote
Zenith engineer Eugene Polley invented the "Flashmatic," which represented the industry's first wireless TV remote. Introduced in 1955, Flashmatic operated by means of four photo cells, one in each corner of the TV cabinet around the screen.
While it pioneered the concept of wireless TV remote control, the Flashmatic had some limitations. It was a simple device that had no protection circuits and, if the TV sat in an area in which the sun shone directly on it, the tuner might start rotating.
Development Challenges
Zenith management loved the concepts proven by Polley's Flashmatic and directed his engineers to develop a better remote control. First thoughts pointed to radio. But, because they travel through walls, radio waves could inadvertently control a TV set in an adjacent apartment or room.
Using distinctive sound signals was discussed, but Zenith engineers believed people might not like hearing a certain sound that would become characteristic of operating the TV set through a remote control. It also would be difficult to find a sound that wouldn't accidentally be duplicated by either household noises or by the sound coming from TV programming.
The Birth of Space Command
Zenith's Dr. Robert Adler suggested using "ultrasonics," that is, high-frequency sound, beyond the range of human hearing. He was assigned to lead a team of engineers to work on the first use of ultrasonics technology in the home as a new approach for a remote control.
The transmitter used no batteries; it was built around aluminum rods that were light in weight and, when struck at one end, emitted distinctive high-frequency sounds. The first such remote control used four rods, each approximately 2-1/2 inches long: one for channel up, one for channel down, one for sound on and off and one for power on and off.
They were very carefully cut to lengths that would generate four slightly different frequencies. They were excited by a trigger mechanism -- similar to the trigger of a gun -- that stretched a spring and then released it so that a small hammer would strike the aluminum rod. The device was developed quickly, with the design phase beginning in 1955. Called "Zenith Space Command," the remote control went into production in the fall of 1956.
Quarter Century of Ultrasonic Remotes
The original Space Command remote control was expensive because an elaborate receiver in the TV set, using six additional vacuum tubes, was needed to pick up and process the signals. Although adding the remote control system increased the price of the TV set by about 30 percent, it was a technical success and was adopted in later years by other manufacturers.
In the early 1960s, solid-state circuitry (i.e., transistors) began to replace vacuum tubes. Hand-held, battery-powered control units could now be designed to generate the inaudible sound electronically. In this modified form, Dr. Adler's ultrasonic remote control invention lasted through the early 1980s, a quarter century from its inception.
Today's Infrared Remote Controls
By the early 1980s, the industry moved to infrared, or IR, remote technology. The IR remote works by using a low frequency light beam, so low that the human eye cannot see it, but which can be detected by a receiver in the TV. Zenith's development of cable-compatible tuning and teletext technologies in the 1980s greatly enhanced the capabilities and uses for infrared TV remotes.
Today, remote control is a standard feature on other consumer electronics products, including VCRs, cable and satellite boxes, digital video disc players and home audio receivers. And the most sophisticated TV sets have remotes with as many as 50 buttons.
Zenith developed the world's first wireless trackball TV remote control, called Z-Trak. The remote works like a computer mouse - click the ball and a cursor appears on the TV screen. Roll the ball and the cursor activates control menus hidden in different corners of the screen. Then, activate something from those menus - bass, treble, contrast, color temperature, channel... whatever.
Manufacturers used to only make remote controls that operated one TV set. However, they are now making universal remote controls that can operate any TV set. Experts predict that someday remote controls will control almost every device in the home.
