Workshop description:

Title: Inside Engineering English

Engineering is a big word. It spans several fields – mechanical, electrical and civil are the main ones – and includes innumerable sub-specializations, from aerodynamics to soil mechanics. These branches are so diverse and extensive, and encompass such vast amounts of specialized language, that it almost seems questionable whether we can consider 'technical English' to be a single area of ESP.

However, when I overlay my experience in technical English training with my studies and professional background in engineering, it strikes me that there's a core of technical vocabulary and communicative language that's valuable to all engineers, technicians and technical managers.

During this session, we'll explore this generic fabric of technical English. We'll look at key examples of vocabulary and skills, examine why this kind of language is so important, and discuss how it ties in with more specialized engineering terminology. In particular, we'll look at interaction between engineering professionals, to shed light on some of the key areas of technical communication inside industry that are not always apparent from the outside.

Mark Ibbotson is an author and trainer. He has a BTEC Diploma in Civil Engineering and a BSc (Hons) Degree in Construction Management. He subsequently worked as a site engineer and technical manager on construction projects in the UK – primarily on manufacturing facilities and multi-storey buildings.

The IATEFL BESIG International Business English Summer Conference 2010 is a mid-year opportunity to network and catch up with current trends in Business English.

IATEFL BESIG is now accepting proposals for presentations and workshops for a summer conference, which will take place in Rome, Italy from 25 (afternoon) to 26 (morning) June 2010.

Deadline for proposals: 15 March 2010

BESIG wants to encourage speakers who are based in Italy, Spain, Portugal and France or have never presented at an IATEFL BESIG conference to submit proposals. We are looking for a wide range of high-quality presentations at our Rome mini IATEFL BESIG Conference.

The proposals will be evaluated by the organizers and the IATEFL BESIG Committee, and those selected for inclusion in the programme will be announced on Saturday 27 March.

Communication in a Self-Service Society

New Communication Practices
Among the many changes computer technology has brought us in the past decades, the drastic changes in our ways of communicating are the most noticeable. E-mail has taken the place of traditional mail and telegrams. Web sites take the place of corporate brochures and product catalogues, electronic forms are starting to make traditional paper forms obsolete. Traditional printed reports lose their primary in corporate communication;PowerPoint presentations, wikis, and blogs take their place. Formal one-way communication structures are replaced by more informal network structures.

Self-Service
These changes have increased the possibilities for the general public to get engaged in activities that traditionally belonged to the responsibility of specialists. The Internet enables us to become our own travel agents, bankers, or even our own physicians. wikipedia is a striking example of the way members of the public co-create a source of information that matches or surpasses the well-respected Encyclopedia Britannica and its counterparts in other countries. Our society is changing from service to self-service.

Consequences
The move to self-service has important consequences for technical and professional communication. To mention only a few: Web 2.0 features enable the public to contribute to or amend (technical) documentation. User forums, weblogs (blogs), and wikis have become important sources of information about almost every conceivable topic. The roles of information creator and information user are becoming interchangeable. Administrative organizations such as banks, insurance companies, and government agencies increasingly use the Internet as the channel for transactions with their public. Health organizations are using the Internet for communication purposes, from health advice and consultation to remote monitoring of patients.

New Questions
This raises important questions for technical and professional communicators. what are the social and economic implications of the self-service world? Who will profit, and who runs the risk of being excluded? What are the consequences of the "digital divide" if everyone is expected to "help themselves?" How can technical communication and usability specialists support the development of self-service environments that make sense and empower the public to put them to good use? How can we teach our students to effectively create and use information in self-service environments?

We hope to explore these questions and other issues at IPCC 2010.

EXPOLINGUA Berlin is the only international fair for languages and cultures in Europe’s German-speaking region and provides the most comprehensive market overview.

1. Top Psychologist Warns of the Dangers of the Social Web

An American psychologist, biologist and broadcaster, Dr Aric Sigman is also the author of the award-winning and controversial book Remotely Controlled: How television is damaging our lives and more recently, The Spoilt Generation: Why restoring authority will make our children and our society happier.

Dr Sigman’s talk at the Houses of Parliament, as well as his latest articles on the negative effect of television and the social web have caused widespread public debate. In the following interview, Dr Sigman explains his views on the biological implications of internet usage.

2. Giving Voice to People – Even the Voice of Homer Simpson

Even Homer Simpson can help to make technology more accessible. At least, that is the view of one of the keynote speakers at this year’s OEB. ”I have always worked towards empowering people to speak for themselves“ says Dr Lizbeth Goodman, Chair of Creative Technology Innovation at the University of East London and Director of Research for Futurelab Education. And even Homer Simpson, the crude and boorish character from TV’s ‘The Simpsons’, can be put to good use by lending their voice to someone who otherwise could not speak.

3. E-Learning in France Is à la mode

France is a country known for its savoir-vivre, cuisine and couture – but what about e-learning and related IT innovations? At the “French Pavilion” and in a session dedicated to French e-learning providers and experts, OEB participants will have the opportunity to see original inventions such as the robot Nao, and learn about the latest e-learning trends made in France.

4. E-Learning with a Kick

Sport plays a crucial social role in the integration of young people into society and now it is increasingly being used as an incentive to increase motivation for learning and training. At OEB, four fascinating e-learning projects that revolve around the world of sports will be presented.

The first involves football stadiums, which serve as authentic working worlds to grab pupils’ attention and provide them with orientation for their own career choices. The second is Playing for Success, a UK project that successfully attracts young people by offering the opportunity to
learn in sports venues rather than in the classroom.

Next is the PC learning game Champions for South Africa, in which pupils experience the “Rainbow Nation” during the upcoming World Cup from the perspective of street kids. And finally, participants will be able to discover how video annotations improve the training of table tennis coaches and referees.

5. Virtual Learning Worlds – Connect Learners within the Web

Transforming “Flatland” into an immersive 3D Learning World is the mission of Tony O´Driscoll, virtual worlds expert and Professor of the Practice at Duke University´s Fuqua School of Business. He is profoundly convinced that the demands of globalisation and a new working world with anytime, anyplace work also need an anytime, anyplace educational parallel.

6. The ONLINE EDUCA Debate

Is the increasing use of technology and social software damaging students' minds and undermining the benefits of traditional methods of learning? Four renowned speakers will argue their case at the ONLINE EDUCA Debate on Thursday, December 3rd, 2009.

The event promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s conference. Facebook-Opponent Dr Aric Sigman will talk about the dangers of the Social Web, supported by political columnist Bruce Anderson of The Independent newspaper. The motion will be opposed by Donald Clark, who is well known in the blogosphere as a commentator on developments in education and training and expert Jerry Michalski, Founder and President of Sociate.

7. ICT to Empower Learning, Creativity & Innovation in Europe

Computers and the Internet have arrived in European schools. Virtually all primary schools use computers for learning purposes, and some have even started to move away from dedicated computer labs to the use in class. But what motivates teachers to use technology in the classroom? Does it really affect children's learning? What are outstanding best practices?

STEPS, a comparative study into the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in primary schools in the 27 EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, was undertaken to scrutinise the pedagogical use of technology in the classroom and its impact on learning. Results will be presented – for the first time – at this year's OEB.

The study is one of the activities encouraged by the European Commission as part of its Lifelong Learning Programme (LLL). In a full-day workshop and a conference session, representatives of the EC will give an overview of the EC's key activities related to ICT for learning.

8. OEB Podcast Series 2009

Tune into the second installment of the OEB podcast series, designed to whet your appetite in the run-up to this year’s conference by drawing attention to a selection of the main themes and experts. This podcast features keynote speaker David James Clarke IV discussing the role technology can play in the pedagogic world for both the educator and the student.

9. Fronter Implements New LMS for the University of Vienna

The University of Vienna, the oldest university in the German-speaking world and one of the largest in Central Europe, has selected Fronter as its central Learning Management System (LMS). Fronter was chosen to replace the former provider after an extensive tender process and intensive testing. Since March 2009, Fronter has been functioning as the University’s e-learning platform. At OEB, Annabell Lorenz from the University of Vienna will talk about the challenges that came with such a large-scale implementation and give insights into how the changeover process took place.

We are proud to announce that Penny Ur and Jamie Keddie will be our Plenary Speakers during the 28th Annual TESOL France Colloquium. This two-day event will take place on November 6th and 7th 2009 at Télécom ParisTech.

TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) France, an affiliate of TESOL Inc. and IATEFL, is a non-profit organization of teachers of English in France.

Its purposes are to stimulate professional development, to disseminate information about research, books and other materials related to English, and to strengthen instruction and research.

EV FAIRS

EV Fairs are informal demonstrations where teachers or teacher-developers share their use of technology resources.

HARDWARE FAIRS

Hardware fairs focus on uses of devices other than computers that offer unique applications such as iPods or Tablet PC. They provide presenters with two consecutive 25-minute sessions to demonstrate their hardware applications.

MINI-WORKSHOPS

The EV Mini-workshops are limited-seating ticketed events that provide short presentations followed by hands-on experience.

DEVELOPERS’ SHOWCASE

The Developers’ Showcase is an opportunity for ESOL teachers and curriculum/course designers to demonstrate new and original computer applications.
