You could buy the salvaged aircraft and cut out the flight deck area. It would cost you a minimum of about $375,000 for an old 747. After you remove the flight deck, you might sell the remaining airframe for $30,000 or so to a scrap buyer. So the first problem is money. If you have that kind of money, fine; go ahead.

After you cut out the flight deck from the airframe, you will have to cut it into at least 2-3 pieces so it will fit onto flat bed trucks for shipment. When it arrives at your home, you will have to reassemble it. Be sure to check your local ordinances and building codes to make sure it is legal to set this up on your property. It shouldn’t be a problem if you live outside city limits. If you live in the city, you will probably have to get a variance from the city planning board.

The next thing you need to consider is that the flight deck of an old airliner will have been stripped of everything you want. The instruments, yokes, control levers, switch panels, seats, doors, and cabinets will all be gone. Those airplanes are left in the desert in a condition such that only a scrap aluminum dealer would be interested in them.

I know a person who built a reasonable simulation of a space shuttle flight deck out of lumber and plywood, and constructed all the instrument and control panels. Did the whole thing for just a couple of thousand dollars. Went to a junkyard and bought “captain’s chairs” out of wrecked vans to simulate the seats. So projects of that type can be done, and it can be fun. It even has a slow-speed motor drive with cables and pulleys so he can tilt it down flat or straight up for “launching.”

Hate to paint such a negative picture for you, but realistically that’s the sort of situation you are most likely to run into. If you want to look into it yourself, try an internet search on “aircraft salvage.”

I’d have to say that the chances of the airspeed indicator malfunctioning is probably GREATER at a low altitude just from the number of foreign objects, i.e. Bugs, birds, etc.

Aside from that, the instructor may just be trying to drive home the point that an aircraft’s attitude plus it’s power setting equals a certain view out the cockpit window–in other words, “With the power set here, and the pitch set here–this is what you should see.”

Additionally, the idea mentioned of having to use standby instruments or ancillary instruments such as Angle of Attack is a valid one. There’s too little time short final to dig into a checklist to select another Air Data Computer or worse yet, exchange controls to the other pilot.

Many airlines also require that a pilot know how to deal with flight instrument failures, and while the likelihood of it happening IS extremely low, the training still has to occur. Call it “checking a box.”

I grew up using a yoke for Flight Simulator (Windows 95). When I got older, got a set of pedals, and learned how to set it up myself I realized that the yoke was just like any other controller. It has an x and y axis, and two buttons. The real advantage of the yoke was the throttle, which is the equivalent of an analog trigger button that’s not spring-loaded.

So yes, you can use an Xbox 360 controller for a flight simulator. You may want to consider assigning the throttle to two button though instead of to a trigger since it can be very difficult to hold a trigger steady at anything besides 0% and 100%, and even at 100% your finger will get pretty tired. You’ll also still need a keyboard for some of the more obscure controls, though I’ll let you decide for yourself what functions are worth mapping to your controller.

Nope the flight yoke is mostly used in airliners and larger planes which are mostly flown with auto pilot / auto throttle. (in fact, except @ take off and touch down the yoke isn't even used under normal circumstances). If you want to make a license on smaller planes you'll probably be more often confronted w/ a stick; this item http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-PS38-Cyborg-X-Stick/dp/B001EYU1VO is more appropriate. The package underneath (joystick + FSX Gold for 70 bucks or so) is all you really need DON'T FORGET TO TURN THE REALISM TO MAX (!) & all to make it more realistic (& provided your budget allows it) you may want to take rudder pedals as well; http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-Pro-Flight-Rudder-Pedals/dp/B000H67DDY on the ground, the plane is directed w/ the pedals even though the joystick can be twisted to achieve (nearly) the same effect; additionally, the pedals can not only be pushed, but each pedal can command the breaks on each side (by pressing the respective pedal downward) if you do this for license prep, you are probably better off saving that and concentrate on flight (in which case the pedals are only used in case of strong side wind, to turn the plane somewhat against the wind, so that it actually continues to fly forward; this is only used at landing as during flight this is done with the trim). Beside actually controlling the plane during flight & landing, it may also be helpful to familiarize yourself w/ IFR (Instrumen Flight Rules (it's mostly the codes & protocols used for comms between ATC (Air Traffic Control, towers & all) & planes)) and ILS (Instrument Landing System) which may not be available on small planes but might be requested as theoretical knowledge again, if you choose the FSX DON'T FORGET TO TURN THE REALISM TO MAX (!) if you leave it to default, you can practically land a 747 on 5th avenue, thus… Not really realistic the missions provided in FSX (any edition) can introduce you to flighing very easily & in a few hours. The 1st missions are w/ an ultralight, but it is to familiarize the user w/ fligh dynamics.

I had the same problem!!. But my friend was able to start at the gate… So he told me to go were it said (Active runway) scroll down and you will see all the gates from that just chose the gate !!!! Oh and for taxing to a gate when you land just consult the air traffic control before you land to get a runway to land on the air traffic control will tell you.When you land it will have the option to taxi to the gate the only problem is in order to do so you need to be flying a flight when you aren’t just pic agate any gate!!! Many reason’s why things don’t happen. In the 2002 you just had parking in the 2004 Jet ways added But did not work. Most of the time. Let’s say you have a 757,400. And the Jetway work. But Same Air craft different Model maker and Airline. And the Jetway did not work. But in the FSX. They work 90% of the time. But still the some of the same problems come up.. I have seen in both, your sitting at a gate and AI-Air craft will pull right into to you. Another was Deicing Trucks, Park and spot for them but never work. Some down loads offer, Pax , Even Screams on a bad landing, another was a First Officer, That took over some of your duties. And Auto Take off to Flight LV to Landing, But never work. One did work. With Pax leaving the AC to the Term and Back to the AC. But when you read the “READ ME FILE” in the zip file. You did every thing right. But so a you down loaded a virus and or spy ware and did not know it. 99% you did down loaded what you wanted. Just not working. And maybe 1% has spyware. My PC found that out. So, in short. It may or may not work. The Items, like shift f never happen in 2004 only in FSX. Only to the fuel box, and not even from ATC a point to the fuel box. So your not alone.
