Training Session Starting

Best Friends Helps The Gulf Oil Spill

Give the Family Dog a Haircut … and Help Clean Up an Oil Spill

Dog grooming and cleaning up oil spills may seem totally unrelated, but a local business has found a way to recycle hair clippings from its grooming business to help save areas, like the Gulf coast, threatened by oil spills each year.

Best Friends Pet Care 8020 Ronson Rd, San Diego is collecting hair and fur clippings from all of the brush-outs and haircuts that it does each week and is donating them to “Hair for Oil Spills” – a program that turns them into containment booms and clean up mats.

Hair is very effective at absorbing oil, and so is a good tool for this purpose. Volunteers for the non-profit organization Matter of Trust stuff donated hair and fur into recycled nylons and mesh to create sausage-like devices that are placed in the water to help contain and soak up spilled oil.

"With the large number of dogs we groom at our 40 locations each week, we know we can make a difference," . "We are very excited that we can take something that has been treated as trash and help turn it into a useful tool for saving the environment."

According to Matter of Trust, on average, there are 2600 oil spills each year. Most are small compared with the Gulf spill, but all threaten the environment and local wildlife, and put local industries like fishing at risk. Every pet’s hair can make a difference for the endangered wildlife and citizens in the path of an oil spill.

Rare Twin Foals at the Helen Woodward Animal Center

On Sunday, March 28th Lena, a 9-year-old, maiden, registered Quarter Horse gave birth to twins: Sunny & Angel. Lena’s owner did not know she was giving birth to twins until it happened! After that, the horse family was transported to Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Equine Hospital, where they could be monitored for state of the art, around the clock care. Most people have never seen a set of twin foals because it is rare that they both survive to term. The fact that they were both born healthy and that the mother is also still alive makes this an unusual story.

A new elephant calf is born at the San Diego Zoo

On February 14th, the San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park welcomed a new African Elephant calf. People at the zoo could hear the entire elephant herd trumpeting at 2am annoucning the newborn calf. "The herd was celebrating," said Brittany Trawick, San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park elephant keeper. "Elephants are social animals. When a calf is born they let everyone know!"

Firefighters pulled Rosie, limp and unconscious, from a burning home

Firefighters saved the life of a Chihuahua who was found unconscious after flames tore though an Emerald Hills home.

The fire started just after noon on the porch at a home on Weaver St. Smoke was pouring into the home. Three dogs were inside alone, including 16-year-old Rosie, who was limp and unconscious.

Luckily firefighters had a special device and sprang into action.

“Firefighters took the little puppy mask. We have different sizes. It fits right over the snout,” firefighter Tom Tosca said. “We don’t use them a whole lot, but in situations like this, they come in very handy.”

The respirator was donated to the fire department.

“Pets usually do pretty well when you get oxygen to them pretty quick and that’s what happened in this case,” Tosca said.

The firefighter says dogs tend to hide during a fire, like in the bathroom or inside a closet.

“Firefighters search everywhere, they go under in every little crack and crevice in the house to try to find victims and sometimes they’ll find cats, dogs, parrots, anything,” he said.

The other two dogs were in a kennel and away from the high concentration smoke area.

As for Rosie, she’s doing just fine.

“Her lungs are a little raspy, but that’s to be expected,” Tosca said.

Cody is an awesome little cocker spaniel that stays with us on a regular basis while his Mom goes away on business trips. He has been boarding with us for a few years now and has become a staff favorite. His favorite things are cuddle times, basking in the sun, stuffed toys and the cookies that his Mom brings in for him.
