One part of the answer may be that vegetarian diets relieve inflammation.&lt;br /&gt;
The Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study found the two makers of inflammation, fibrinogen and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), can be explained in terms of food. The dietary culprits are "high intake of the food groups that include:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;red meat&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;low-fiber bread and cereal&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;dried beans&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;fried potatoes&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;tomato vegetables&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;eggs&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;cheese and cottage cheese, and&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;low intake of wine"&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;That seems to say a burger and fries or a quick grilled cheese sandwich are exactly what diabetics don't need.&lt;br /&gt;
But why?&lt;br /&gt;
The way I understand the medical literature I've read is that in Type 2 diabetes, insulin simply can't get out into the bloodstream. The omentum, or abdominal fat, clamps down on the capillaries that carry insulin into the wider circulation, and inflammation compounds problems with circulation. The PAI-1 that is made worse by the foods listed above is actually made by fat cells. That means that thin people might get away with eating burgers and fries, but those who have belly fat can't.&lt;br /&gt;
PAI-1 causes circulatory issues beyond the effects of cholesterol and high blood pressure. It keeps clots from breaking up, and clots, as you know, can completely impede circulation. So if you have a combination of:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;omental (abdominal) fat&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;high blood pressure, and&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;inflammation&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;...your pancreas just isn't going to be able to keep up with digestion.&lt;br /&gt;
At first, and this is what happens in most Type 2 diabetics, the insulin just doesn't reach circulation at the right time. That means that your blood sugars soar after a meal, but they eventually get back to normal. As a result, if you are just checking you fasting blood sugar, things may seem OK.&lt;br /&gt;
But they really aren't. Those high blood sugar levels after meals cause muscle cells to develop a defense against taking in too much sugar... insulin resistance. So the next time there is a surge of blood sugars released from food, the muscles are going to take in less glucose in. Blood sugar levels stay higher for a longer period. And the muscles become more resistant.&lt;br /&gt;
And, in part, this can be due to eating too much:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;meat&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;white bread,&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;sugary cereal&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;beans&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;French fries&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;ketchup&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;eggs, and&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;cheese&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;It's enough to make you want a glass of wine. And talking of wine, a glass of red wine with dinner does seem to encourage lower blood sugars for some people, but it is very individual. For others, the opposite can happen... blood sugar levels seem to rise later that night. If you do have a glass of wine with dinner, check your blood sugar level before bed, and if you can, try testing your blood sugar at 2 or 3am every now and then.&lt;br /&gt;

For diabetics, a healthy diet is even more important than it is for others. There are three types of diabetes - Type 1 or juvenile diabetes (about 5-10% of all cases), Type 2 diabetes (which is the most common, and seen in approximately 95% of all cases of diabetes) and gestational diabetes.&lt;br /&gt;
What is Diabetes?&lt;br /&gt;
Diabetes is a condition that causes patients to have high blood glucose levels, and, often, this must be controlled through medication such as insulin and, of course, a healthy diet. Diabetes is a serious condition, and left untreated, it can lead to a number of other health issues, including heart disease, kidney disease and even kidney failure. Many people end up with eye diseases and are at risk of blindness due to their diabetes, and it can even cause impotency in some men. There are many risk factors for developing diabetes, including:&lt;br /&gt;
- Being a member of a high-risk group (Hispanic, Aboriginal, Asian and African in particular)&lt;br /&gt;
- Being overweight&lt;br /&gt;
- Having a family history of diabetes&lt;br /&gt;
- Having other health issues that are associated with diabetes&lt;br /&gt;
- Giving birth to a baby weighing more than nine pounds&lt;br /&gt;
- Having gestational diabetes (diabetes that develops during pregnancy, although in most cases it goes away after the baby is born)&lt;br /&gt;
- Having high blood pressure&lt;br /&gt;
- Having high cholesterol levels&lt;br /&gt;
Anyone who has one or more of the above risk factors, and has not been tested for diabetes, should be tested. Early detection is one of the best ways to treat this disease, and it may even be that the person being tested does not have diabetes at all, which obviously is a real relief.&lt;br /&gt;
There are many symptoms that diabetics face with their condition. Some of these symptoms include:&lt;br /&gt;
- Excessive thirst&lt;br /&gt;
- Excessive hunger&lt;br /&gt;
- Frequent urination&lt;br /&gt;
- Sudden weight gain or loss&lt;br /&gt;
- Extreme fatigue&lt;br /&gt;
- Frequent and recurring infections&lt;br /&gt;
- Poor or blurred vision&lt;br /&gt;
- Impotency&lt;br /&gt;
- Tingling or numbness in the hands and/or feet&lt;br /&gt;
- Cuts and bruises that do not heal quickly&lt;br /&gt;
Dietary Sources of Protein that are Excellent for Diabetic Diets&lt;br /&gt;
One of the first things that a person must do when diagnosed with diabetes is make some lifestyle changes. In addition to getting more exercise and taking the prescribed medication, diabetics must follow a diet that has the nutrients they need to help fight the disease. Having a poor diet will cause any number of health conditions, and will make existing conditions, including diabetes, that much worse.&lt;br /&gt;
There are two types of dietary sources of protein: animal proteins and plant proteins. Animal proteins are complete proteins, and some excellent choices for diabetic diets include fish, white meat poultry, low-fat dairy products such as milk and cheese, and eggs, which are known as a perfect protein. Plant proteins are incomplete proteins, with the exception of soy, which is not only great for diabetics, but is also known to help prevent breast cancer in women. Some plant proteins that are recommended for diabetic diets include broccoli, legumes, leafy greens such as spinach, whole grains, and brown rice, just to name a few.&lt;br /&gt;
Protein Supplements Can Help Diabetics Get the Nutrients They Need&lt;br /&gt;
Many diabetics who are not getting the right amount of protein as well as other nutrients and vitamins in their diets are often told by their physicians that they should use protein supplements. This is a great way to get all of the protein needed each day, and for those who are overweight (which causes and is caused by diabetes), protein supplements make excellent, healthy meal replacements. There are many different sources of protein that are used in supplements, including whey, casein, soy, rice, and egg. Soy is great for vegetarians, as it is the only plant-based protein that is complete, meaning that it contains all eight essential amino acids and all 14 non-essential amino acids.&lt;br /&gt;
- Essential Amino Acids - These are amino acids that must come from dietary sources, as the body is unable to produce them on its own. The eight essential amino acids are: leucine, isoleucine, lysine, threonine, tryptophan, valine, methionine, and phenylalanine.&lt;br /&gt;

Millions of people work 8 hours or more every day glued to their seats! For most office workers, this is normal routine, but we all know that sitting in front of your computer daily for hours can wreak havoc on our bodies.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Long hours of sitting can cause:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Shoulder aches&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Eye strain&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Neck pain&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Carpal Tunnel Syndrome&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

I used to live the corporate life, and all the sitting took a toll on my lower back. Prolonged sitting, no matter how much I tried to maintain good posture, is a killer. Because of the kind of job I had, I developed lower back pains. The nasty back pains led me to several doctor visits and yoga. Today, I'm happy to say that I don't suffer from back pains anymore.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you are one of those women who have to be at a desk all day, make sure you follow these simple steps:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Sit properly - back straight, shoulders back and your monitor should be level with your eyes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Keep legs bent at the knees so they are slightly higher than your hips.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Keep your feet flat on the floor or on a stool.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It's also very important to do some stretching exercises within your workday. This will help alleviate the feeling of stiffness after long hours of sitting. Do these simple exercises to help you loosen up and reenergize your weary-from-sitting body:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Neck and shoulders:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
To lessen tension and strain, bend your head forward/backward, side to side then look right and left. Then roll your shoulders forward for around 8-10 times, then backward. This also helps release the tension.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Wrists and ankles:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Roll your wrists around at least 10 times clockwise, then reverse. This will help prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome if you type a lot!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Do the same thing with your ankles. Rolling them around will help improve blood circulation.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Calves:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Lift up your legs on the balls of your feet while sitting and set them down. Repeat until your legs are comfortably tired. Repeat after about 10-15 minutes later. Do this several times within the day - this will exercise your calves, and will help prevent blood clots from developing in your legs.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Aside from these simple stretches, you can also check out some yoga exercises for your back, neck and shoulders. I've tried some of them, and believe me, they feel great!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
Finally, take a walk. Inside your building.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One of the things I did when I was slaving away in the corporate world was to take regular walks to ensure continuous blood circulation in my body and keep them from getting too strained. I would take walks to the water station to refill my glass or get coffee. Whenever I had longer breaks, I would take a short walk around or outside our building, and even go up and down the stairs! I looked crazy, but I know I needed it. Aside from giving your legs and heart a good workout, a good walk will allow you to take in fresh air as well.&lt;br /&gt;

I know I do and I don't think I have ever met someone looking to burn fewer calories than they could. For the time and energy we put into our fitness routines (or anything for that matter) we want a maximum return on our investment.&lt;br /&gt;
I mean where do you think the phrase "Get the most bang for your buck" came from. Time is a precious commodity of which most of us have too little of. If somebody told me that I could get more accomplished in the same amount of time I would be all ears.&lt;br /&gt;
Well if you are walking in order to lose weight than this is for you. If you incorporate some cardio exercises into your walking routine you can really get more results. Now I'm not saying turn your 1hr. walk into a 3 hr. super intense workout that's not it all. Just break your normal routine up.&lt;br /&gt;
Try walking at a moderate pace for 5 minutes and then do 2 minutes of a cardio exercise. Then walk for 10 mins and again a 2-minute cardio exercise. What this is going to do is get your heart rate up so that when you are walking for that 5 or 10 minutes you will be burning more calories. That's right burn more calories walking the same amount as you were before.&lt;br /&gt;
By only doing 2 minutes of cardio at a time it makes it a little easier for someone who is just starting there journey to weight loss as some cardio exercises can be very intense. As you get more in shape you can up the cardio portion of your routine from 2mins. to 3 then 4 and so on. Just remember to take it slow you don't want to over do it.&lt;br /&gt;
How does this work? Think of it like this your body is like a car engine in order to get the peak performance you have to warm it up. You wouldn't start your car on a cold morning and immediately gun the engine up to 50mph. (unless you were late for work we have all been there). You let your engine gradually come up to temperature that way it is going to perform at its best for you. Well think of your body the same way you have to warm it up to get maximum results. That is why by getting your heart rate up you can burn more calories walking the same amount of time.&lt;br /&gt;
There are so many different forms of cardio exercises that you can easily find some you really enjoy doing. Some of my favorites are are the invisible jump rope (because I hate carrying anything I don't have to), jumping jacks, burpees (I love these they really make me feel like I am getting a great workout) and some basic aerobic moves.&lt;br /&gt;
If you do a little research you'll find that the amount of different exercises that you can do seems endless. Or if you don't find any you like just make something up the important thing is to get your heart pumping how you get there doesn't really matter.&lt;br /&gt;
As with any new exercise routine it is important to talk to your doctor first just to make sure that you are not going to injure or harm yourself in any way. Stretching is another important step to remember not only will you prevent injury but you will gradually improve you flexibility and muscle control.&lt;br /&gt;
Just as important to let your body warm up is to let it cool down too. Try to make the last 10 mins of your routine just walking 5mins at a moderate pace and 5mins at a slow pace and be sure to keep yourself well hydrated. Always remember to try to have fun when you work out after all you want this to become a habit you keep for a long time.&lt;br /&gt;

Does the word exercise conjure up images of sweat and hard work? Well the whole key here is to find something that you enjoy and stick with it. So what is it that you like to do? Walk, swim, dance play tennis? Or are you the type to join a gym?&lt;br /&gt;
There are many walking and hiking clubs that operate throughout the summer months and if you can't find one why don't you start your own? Just call up a few friends and suggest you meet at a certain time and place and go walking together. If everyone invites at least one person you could end up with a good group of you going for a stroll around the neighbourhood.&lt;br /&gt;
All of your dog owner friends could bring along their dogs and everyone is getting their exercise for the day. &lt;br /&gt;
Before you go out and walk it is worth purchasing a good pair of walking shoes. They are made especially for walkers and will have extra cushioning for your arches and heels. Light, layered clothing is also recommended, so you can peel off layers as you warm up.&lt;br /&gt;
Once you start walking you want to aim for at least a 30 minute walk if not longer. At first go at a comfortable speed but you want to either increase the speed or the distance so you keep calorie burning as you walk.&lt;br /&gt;
If you make a circuit of 2 miles, then time yourself and each day try to see if you can beat your time. This way you are having fun challenging yourself and when your time does increase then you are going to feel great. If you are group walking you can make a challenge as to who has the best time.&lt;br /&gt;
As you walk just move your arms faster and keep on pushing through those aches. You will find at first that your calf muscles will hurt and feel really sore as you walk. It is perfectly natural and usually disappears within the first two weeks of beginning a walking regimen.&lt;br /&gt;
By walking with friends you won't even feel as though you are out exercising, it is just nice to have the opportunity to meet up and chat about what you have missed since you last met. Once you have all trimmed down you can meet at the beach in your bathing suits!&lt;br /&gt;

that cigarette? Why do you smoke? If you are still smoking, ask yourself “Am I ready to &lt;br /&gt;
quit smoking”? Can I quit? You must be ready to quit smoking in order to quit and &lt;br /&gt;
stop.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There are three factors which will determine your success:&lt;br /&gt;
1. You must be ready to quit smoking.&lt;br /&gt;
2. You must have faith in yourself to realize you are able to quit.&lt;br /&gt;
3. You must remember, your health should be the most important aspect of your &lt;br /&gt;
 life. Smoking inhibits life.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Many people try to quit smoking, but cannot quit for several reasons. You might have &lt;br /&gt;
been smoking for a long time and it’s a “habit” to pick that cigarette up. Many people &lt;br /&gt;
think about quitting, talk about quitting, and even try to quit several times. You might &lt;br /&gt;
be one of those who have tried several times to quit, but it doesn’t last long and you &lt;br /&gt;
start smoking again. Nicotine reliability will be the hardest part to adjust in the quest to &lt;br /&gt;

The above statistics are overwhelming. Look at the odds against you and the medical &lt;br /&gt;
benefits to you if you quit smoking. &lt;br /&gt;

Did you know that your heath insurance premiums will go down when you stop &lt;br /&gt;
smoking. Insurance companies do not like to give away money, so if you are not a &lt;br /&gt;
smoker, you are a heather person. You are rewarded with lower premiums. This saves &lt;br /&gt;
you money and you are healthy.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Another factor is the cost involved in smoking. An average pack of cigarettes is $2.00 a &lt;br /&gt;
pack. You smoke one pack a day at $14.00 a week, $56.00 a month, and $728.00 a &lt;br /&gt;
year. Let’s say you have been smoking for 20 years - that’s $14,560 in 20 years - up in &lt;br /&gt;
smoke! If you smoke two packs a day just double all these figures. That is almost &lt;br /&gt;
$30,000. A good down payment on the house of your dreams.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Smoking when you are pregnant is a big NO - NO. When you smoke with an unborn &lt;br /&gt;
child inside you, you are giving that unborn the smoking habit. The child does not have &lt;br /&gt;
a chance to decide, for itself, whether to smoke or not. Imagine, being born addicted to &lt;br /&gt;
cigarette&lt;br /&gt;

SELF CONFIDENCE&lt;br /&gt;
Let’s work on the self confidence aspect. You want to be successful, but how do you &lt;br /&gt;
accomplish this? Answer the following question - “What can you do to reduce the &lt;br /&gt;
desire to smoke every time it hits you, and what will you do until the urge passes”?&lt;br /&gt;

This book will help you in your battle with tobacco. You will be able to resist the urge to &lt;br /&gt;
smoke when the urge comes and you will be to resist until the urge passes. &lt;br /&gt;

You also need to decide why you smoke - for the physical, mental or emotional need? &lt;br /&gt;
Each reason has a different solution. This is why you must decide. You can then take &lt;br /&gt;

is very important to be “Truthful” and “Honest”. The only way you will be able to quit is &lt;br /&gt;

Scoring high in question #2 signifies you smoke to relax, such as work breaks, after &lt;br /&gt;
completing a significant job, with that morning cup of coffee or alcoholic beverage.&lt;br /&gt;

Scoring high in question #3 signifies you smoke to deal with mixed feelings you have in &lt;br /&gt;
your life - anger, anxiety and maybe depression. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Question #4 deals psychological issues such as running out of cigarettes or not being &lt;br /&gt;
allowed to smoke, such as a non smoking facility.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Question #5 signifies you are chemically dependent on cigarettes. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Question #6 indicates you smoke when you are bored, or must have something to do &lt;br /&gt;
with your hands.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Each person smokes for a different reason, but by answering the previous questions, &lt;br /&gt;
we can better determine why you smoke, and how to help you quit smoking. Neither &lt;br /&gt;
heroin or cocaine are as addictive as nicotine. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
ABOUT CIGARETTES&lt;br /&gt;
Why is smoking so habit forming? Nicotine! Why do you have such a hard time &lt;br /&gt;
quitting, and feel so bad, even if you smoke only a few cigarettes each day.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When you smoke, the nicotine creates a biochemical response to your body that &lt;br /&gt;
immediately affects your mood, ability to reason, and your metabolism. The more you &lt;br /&gt;
smoke, the more you are becoming chemically dependent on the nicotine. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
THE EFFECTS OF NICOTINE&lt;br /&gt;
Within seconds of the smoke entering your body, it affects your central nervous system &lt;br /&gt;
and other parts of your body. When stimulated by nicotine, portions of the brain think &lt;br /&gt;
and function more clearly. Other parts of the brain, when stimulated, help you feel &lt;br /&gt;
relaxed and less troubled.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Certain hormones produced in the body are affected by nicotine - causing the chemical &lt;br /&gt;
dependency to nicotine and the desire for a cigarette. Heavy smokers become &lt;br /&gt;
dependent on elevated levels of hormones, incited by nicotine, which causes the &lt;br /&gt;
addiction. They need a cigarette at certain times of the day. After the stimulation of the &lt;br /&gt;
hormones falters, another cigarette is needed. If the cigarette does not come, the &lt;br /&gt;
craving starts.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
IN THE BEGINNING&lt;br /&gt;
Exercise and physical movement are significant keys to quitting. As you exercise, you &lt;br /&gt;
begin to build confidence in yourself and begin to like what you see. Exercise gives you &lt;br /&gt;
energy and the ability to deal with anxiety. The smell of cigarettes becomes disgusting. &lt;br /&gt;
After you have quit smoking, and the craving begins, get up and move around. This will &lt;br /&gt;
stimulate your body in other ways. This exercise will give your body the lift it desires at &lt;br /&gt;
the time.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
SEVEN DAY STRETCH&lt;br /&gt;
At this time, consider the following question:&lt;br /&gt;
How and when do you want to quit smoking?&lt;br /&gt;
There are actually two ways to quit smoking - instantly (cold turkey) or step-by-step. &lt;br /&gt;
When you quit step-by-step, miscellaneous methods are used to taper off before that &lt;br /&gt;
last cigarette. Some people are able to quit instantly, while others may have to taper off &lt;br /&gt;
slowly. For a heavy smoker, a nicotine patch might be the best route to proceed.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Answer the following questions in order to determine which route to take for yourself.&lt;br /&gt;
1. One of the most important things to me at this time is to quit smoking.&lt;br /&gt;

2. I don’t need a cigarette to help me through a tough problem.&lt;br /&gt;
 Yes No Not Sure&lt;br /&gt;
3. I have to quit smoking and my reasons are good enough to do it now.&lt;br /&gt;

4. If I quit this minute, I know I can find a way to resist the craving to smoke, even if &lt;br /&gt;
it is strong.&lt;br /&gt;

If you answered yes to the above four questions, you should be able to quit immediately &lt;br /&gt;
and instantly. First, let’s give you some pointers on how to quit and not start again. &lt;br /&gt;
After reading the following, set a time to quit. If not immediately, set a date and do it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
What about the doubts you may be feeling now?&lt;br /&gt;
Most smokers will get a sense of doubt when they read the questions above. You &lt;br /&gt;
might &lt;br /&gt;
not have the confidence in yourself and your capability to resist the urge to smoke, the &lt;br /&gt;
craving that goes along with wanting that cigarette, or the ability to find a substitute for &lt;br /&gt;
that cigarette. In order to have the confidence to quit, you (1) must find another way to &lt;br /&gt;
handle the urge to smoke when the craving begins and (2) learn to deal with why you &lt;br /&gt;
starting smoking at all. We will answer these questions in order that when you are &lt;br /&gt;
ready to quit smoking, you will have the confidence in yourself to quit.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
HOW TO HANDLE THE CRAVING OF NICOTINE&lt;br /&gt;
You will need defenses in place to help you quit. EACH OF THESE WORK. You may &lt;br /&gt;
use one, all, or a combination of several to achieve your goal. The urge to smoke is &lt;br /&gt;
immediate, and usually lasts for five minutes. If you can resist for that period of time, &lt;br /&gt;
you reduce the urge.&lt;br /&gt;
1. Take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds, and exhale as if you had just &lt;br /&gt;
taken your first puff on a cigarette. A deep breath allows you to take in a &lt;br /&gt;
maximum amount of oxygen, and exhaling lets out large quantities of carbon &lt;br /&gt;
dioxide. This results in a feeling of relaxation. &lt;br /&gt;
2. Take a sip of water several times during this five minute period. Drinking the &lt;br /&gt;
water will give you something to do with your hands and also reduce the desire &lt;br /&gt;
to smoke. Drinking water will also help flush the nicotine out of your body.&lt;br /&gt;
3. Choose a substitute for the cigarette by putting something else in your mouth - a &lt;br /&gt;
toothpick, stirrer, etc.&lt;br /&gt;
4. Do something for the next five minutes which will keep you entirely busy and &lt;br /&gt;
focused on what you are doing. This will distract you from the craving.&lt;br /&gt;
5. Chew a piece of gum or hard candy.&lt;br /&gt;
6. Get up and move around for five minutes. It will help the urge to smoke to pass.&lt;br /&gt;
7. Use a nicotine patch as replacement therapy.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
HANDLE THE REASONS FOR NOT SMOKING&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Become more energetic without cigarettes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Relax and enjoy the life without cigarettes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Deal with your anxieties without a cigarette.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

QUIT NOW NOT TOMORROW&lt;br /&gt;
First, you need to set a date when you are going to quit. Let’s give it one week from &lt;br /&gt;
today. In one week, you will have had numerous occasions to practice with your &lt;br /&gt;
defenses. Eight days from today will be the end of your smoking habit.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Days 1 and 2&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Scrutinize your smoking behavior on days 1 and 2. Each time you light up a cigarette, &lt;br /&gt;
ask yourself the following questions:&lt;br /&gt;
1. Why am I smoking this cigarette?&lt;br /&gt;
2. Would this be an easy one or a difficult one to do without?&lt;br /&gt;
3. If I did not smoke this cigarette, what would I do instead?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Day 3&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Let’s get out and test your defenses today.&lt;br /&gt;
At least once today, use your defenses to shoot down the urge to smoke.&lt;br /&gt;
During the five minutes that it will take for the urge to pass, try out some of your &lt;br /&gt;
defenses. Try one, or all, or find a combination that works for you.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Day 4&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Today is an important day. Don’t smoke one or two of the cigarettes you feel will be &lt;br /&gt;
most difficult to give up. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Remember, this is only practice, and don’t become distressed if you can’t give one of &lt;br /&gt;
those difficult cigarettes up. Review your defenses to see which ones will help you get &lt;br /&gt;
through this particular stage.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you were unable to skip that difficult cigarette and failed, go back and review the &lt;br /&gt;
reasons you were not able to skip that cigarette. Below are some of the most common &lt;br /&gt;
reasons failure occurs:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Chemical properties of addiction&lt;br /&gt;
You feel lousy because you can’t smoke that cigarette at that particular time. As stated &lt;br /&gt;
before, nicotine patches will relieve some of these feelings.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Social pressures&lt;br /&gt;
It may be difficult, at first, to continue some of your activities, such as the weekly card &lt;br /&gt;
party or coffee break. Let others know you are trying to quit and ask for their &lt;br /&gt;
encouragement. Surround yourself with non smokers. For a while, you might even &lt;br /&gt;
have to avoid the parties, etc. to not be around smokers. Surround yourself with &lt;br /&gt;
positive things, not the thing such as smoking that you are trying to stop.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Tension and negative emotion&lt;br /&gt;
An emergency comes up and your first instinct is to have a cigarette. Choose another &lt;br /&gt;
option, such as the breathing techniques. Disengage yourself from the situation that is &lt;br /&gt;
causing you stress. Exercise. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Days 5, 6 and 7&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You are on the home stretch now. For the next three days, your objective is to cut the &lt;br /&gt;
amount of cigarettes you normally smoke in half. If you smoke a pack a day, cut down &lt;br /&gt;
to 10 cigarettes a day, or even better, less than the 10. Your goal is to achieve positive &lt;br /&gt;
results on day 7. Keep track of your cigarettes on the log , and continue to decrease &lt;br /&gt;
your dependency on nicotine.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Still have doubts? The chemical dependency of nicotine on your body is a strong one. &lt;br /&gt;
You might have been smoking for a number of years and this is something very strong. &lt;br /&gt;
You may want to discuss the use of a patch or gum with your doctor. These methods &lt;br /&gt;
will help you slowly eliminate the need for nicotine. DO NOT SMOKE WHILE ON THE &lt;br /&gt;
PATCH. You could experience a dangerous overdose of nicotine.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Pregnant women should not smoke, use the patch or gum. Smokers with any heart &lt;br /&gt;
problems should talk with their physician.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

WHEN YOU QUIT SMOKING&lt;br /&gt;
You need to get rid of those reminders in your home and office which remind you about &lt;br /&gt;
smoking. Throw away or give away those leftover cigarettes and lighters, ashtrays, &lt;br /&gt;
matches, and anything else that could be associated with smoking. Why should you &lt;br /&gt;
force yourself to resist the urge to smoke when it is far simpler to just remove the &lt;br /&gt;
reminders. If you keep a pack of cigarettes in your home or office, there is a good &lt;br /&gt;
chance that you may pick one up. &lt;br /&gt;

Headaches may surface at any time during the first couple of weeks. Try to relax. &lt;br /&gt;
Take any routine remedy for headache, a cold cloth on the back of your neck, or ease &lt;br /&gt;
the stress by taking a short walk.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Tiredness may result during the first few weeks, but if you meditate or relax during the &lt;br /&gt;
first few weeks, it will pass.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Coughing may actually increase during the first few days because the residue from the &lt;br /&gt;
smoke has not been flushed from your system.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Tightness in the chest may occur in the first few days. Rest and take deep breaths and &lt;br /&gt;
this will go away.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Sleeping problems may occur in the first few days. Try to stay away from drinks that &lt;br /&gt;
have a high caffeine content. Try not to exercise too strenuously in the hours prior to &lt;br /&gt;
bedtime. A hot bath prior to bedtime may also be helpful.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Constipation may occur in the first month after you quit. If this occurs, eat foods with a &lt;br /&gt;

If you want to be or do something dramatically different, it is essential to approach things in a whole different way. Too often, we set out, determined to make a change by trying harder or doing more of what never worked or never lasted before. No wonder so many women feel stuck in a vicious cycle of starting and restarting weight loss, fitness, or other health / life balance practices.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Here are my tips for creating real healthy lifestyle breakthroughs that last:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;1. Know Your Why: Know your real why. Why do you want what you want? For instance, if you want to lose weight, what is that about? Breakthroughs happen when we have a compelling, juicy reason for moving forward. No one has a breakthrough doing something simply because they think they "should." Take your goal and keep asking "Why?" until you get to the reason that makes your heart sing. Examples I have heard recently: I want to lose weight so I can move with confidence and ease on stage; so I can go on bike rides with my daughter; so I can really ride my horse the way I used to; so I can fit into a certain outfit that makes lights me up when I wear it; so my knees do not hurt and I can dance with passion. Get the idea?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;2. Know What Has not Worked Before: If you have been on this path before, do not ignore past attempts that have not worked out so well. One of the keys to doing something in a completely different-and successful way-is paying attention to what did not work, where you got stuck, and what you DO NOT know about how to move forward. I am not suggesting you get bogged down in these things, I am suggesting that you take note of them and use them as fuel to create a new approach that does not contain the same minefields.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;3. Know Who You Are: Round pegs do not fit into square holes. Lasting change does not happen when you create a plan of attack that does not fit you, your lifestyle, or your preferences. Breakthroughs and enduring change are created when we leverage our strengths-the things we can do with ease and grace-and incorporate these into our plan of attack.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;4. Above all, Do not Resort to the Same-old, Same-old Just Because You Do Not Know What Else to Do. That will not make you a breakthrough, it will make you tired. Leverage support. It is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to create a breakthrough when we are stuck inside our own head and the narrow conception we have of how things need to be done. Your breakthrough solution might be right in front of your nose (it often is), but our brains are trained to notice the things we expect to see and to fit what we observe into the way of thinking that we already have. The easiest way to create powerful change and breakthroughs is to see your situation through someone else's eyes.
