Tips on How to Design a Great Site

Have you ever walked pass a shop that, for some reason, you just felt that you had to go in? Maybe it was the d?cor, or the window display, or the pretty girl, or a combination of all those but something in the shop called out to you, "Come in" and you just had to obey.

In the online world, won't it be nice to have a site that buyers just had to buy from, despite themselves? Surfers will be drawn to the "Add to Cart" button that squealed, "Click me!" to them. They found that they just had to click the button and buy the item.

While I can assure you I can't design such a site, and I certainly am not going to reveal how to design it in a free article even if I can, there are many ways to make your site more friendly to your visitor.

Use the following tips as a guideline to the design of your new site, or to evaluate an existing site. They are going to make your site faster, easier to use and more pleasing to your visitor. If you don't make a sale on the first visit, they might just come back a second time and make a purchase.

DON'T REINVENT THE WHEEL
Probably the first thing you want to do is to visit some of your competitor's sites. It will give you an idea of what your site could look like, what features you want for your own site and serve as a starting point for the design of your site.

Perhaps the best advice I can give you here is to look at the sites from a customer's point of view. As a customer, what do you like or dislike about the sites? Would you buy from them, and why? Are you going to revisit again, and why?

EASE OF NAVIGATION
In many cases, you don't read a web site like you would a novel. You don't start from page 1, continue to page 2, and so on.

You would probably "read" a site like you would a reference book. Maybe you will read the introduction to get an idea of what the book is about, and then you will skip to the table of contents to look for the location of the information that you need. In some cases, you may turn to the index at the back of the book to see what pages of the book the information you want is referred to.

Notice the navigation aids - the table of contents and the index. The first will be found at the beginning while the second, if available, at the end of the book. This is a standard observed by all books.

Your site should be as easy to navigate.

- Main Menu. You should have a menu, located either at the top, left or right, that directs users to the various sections of your site. This menu should be available from every page of your site, and at the same location.

- Site Map. If your site is relatively large, and you feel that users may have a problem locating the information they want even with a main menu, consider including a site map. Site maps give much more detail than the main menu and users will have an easier time locating the information they want.

- Search Engine. If your site is a very large site, including a search engine is a good idea.

FAST LOADING PAGES
Many webmasters will have broadband or cable connections and they tend to forget about the poor souls still struggling with dialup.

It is best that you keep the size of your pages as small as possible to accommodate the users with slow connections. A general guideline is to keep the size of your pages below 100k.

GRAPHICS
Pretty graphics are nice to look at. But unless your site is about graphics, it's probably best to keep it to a minimum. It distracts the users from your site, and increases the load time for your pages.

Don't forget to optimize the graphics that you use. The jpeg graphic format is a compressed format. You can choose to compress it as much or as little as you want. The more you compress it, the smaller it becomes, but the image is of a lower quality.

To optimize your jpeg's, start with a jpeg of acceptable quality. Save the jpeg with more compression and view it. If you find the quality acceptable, save it again with even more compression. Keep doing it until you get an image with unacceptable quality. The image before that will be your optimized image.

Note that you cannot go from a low quality image back to a high quality image. So remember to save your high quality images into a separate directory before trying any optimization.

CONSISTENCY
We discussed consistency regarding the location of your main menu. This consistency should extend to all areas of your site. In other words, your fonts, color scheme, buttons, etc, should be the same for all pages of your site.

TESTING
The computer on your desk is called a PC, or personal computer. Whenever I am asked why a particular computer behaves in a strange way, I will remark that the computer is called a "personal computer", and thus will exhibit its own personality. :)

Similarly, surfers viewing your site will also have their own personal computer, with their own particular combination of software and hardware. Therefore, it is best to test your site under as many different types and versions of hardware and software as possible.

- Browsers. Although IE is the dominant browser, some of your users may be running other browsers like Netscape or Firefox. Test your site in as many different browsers as you can. Also, don't forget to test it under different versions of the same browser.

- Screen Resolutions. Don't forget to test your site under different screen resolutions.

- Java and ActiveX. Many sites depend on Java or ActiveX to display properly. If your site needs a Java enabled browser, try it with Java disabled and see how it looks. If possible, it is best that your site will function correctly even if the users have Java or ActiveX disabled.

I was attempting to explain what a Traffic Exchange is to one of my colleagues the other day because we were talking about books. I told him that I had recently written an audio e-book about the Traffic Exchange Industry.

Of course he said "what's that?" Whammo, just like that I had his interest and was preparing to educate a new convert. My associates who is a smart guy informed me that Traffic Exchange does not exist in the dictionary, that point got me thinking.

After our conversation and my webucation of a new Traffic Exchange advocate I cracked open my trusty Webster’s dictionary, I also did a search online of course. Do you know what I found out? He was right.

The closest thing to Traffic Exchange in the dictionary online or off was “traffic engineering” which is not really close to what we are talking about.

Been Burnt, Scammed, Taken for a Ride...

Well don’t worry, we have all been there. I doubt there is a single network marketer or homeworker out there who hasn’t at some point in their career fallen for an envelope stuffing scheme, been talked into selling potions and pills, tried chain letters etc. But the important thing is to learn from your mistakes and take something from every experience.

My first venture into working from home came when I answered an advert in a local paper which stated I could be earning £2000 a week part time, all I had to do was call. So I did and ended up trailing along to a meeting about how much money one could make from selling herbal diet supplements and how easy it all was. So I signed up and paid the £200 for the starter pack. Full of enthusiasm I started my 68 year old gran off on the diet. Well the first week she lost a few pounds and all was going well. I paid out another £100 to have a load of leaflets printed and spent hours putting these on car windscreens. By the second week, gran had given up on the diet as the stuff ‘tasted funny’ and she was bored with a milkshake three times a day!

Then I decided to try selling the products via the internet. It was a slow process but I taught myself html coding and built my first website. Then came the hard task of trying to market my site and get people to visit it. This is when I discovered that you could apparently make thousands very easily and with no effort online, simply by signing up for a website and placing a few free classifieds. So I joined every ‘next big thing’, every site promoting untold riches, only to find that the program disappeared after a few weeks, along with my money. But along the way I learnt what I should look for in an online business, the best ways to market online and my web design skills improved drastically. At times I became very disillusioned and felt like giving up when yet another program folded, or sponsor failed to get in touch and offer support but I learned valuable lessons. And after one such online opportunity disappeared and having convinced a number of people to join me in this, I thought enough was enough and started my own online program. Even that involved a steep learning curve, the site had to be revamped numerous times, parts of the program changed but I put the knowledge I gained from being a ‘newbie’ into building a good stable program. People need support, they want to see proper products and a realistic and achievable pay plan.

So don’t give up, from every bad experience you will learn something, be it a new skill, what to avoid next time, what advertising works or doesn’t and so on. Like life home based business, especially on the internet, is a learning experience which you must embrace.

Second mistake... NOT making every effort to understand and enlist personal contact and build a personal relationship with each contact.

Not just, "here is the sales pitch", but a first hand account of what a contact is looking for and what and how they can build together and receive all the benefits.

It is the FOLLOW UP and relationship trust and business building with contacts that make the money.

Don't always expect everyone to find what is being promoted so spectacular they are willing to spend their money at first glance. If what is being offered is truly worth the marketing efforts and the follow-up information to enlist the purchase there will be the need to follow up for each prospect many times. List the benefits and bonus offers for acting immediately, at the same time remember don't waste the prospect.

First make the Contact, develop them into a Prospect and direct them into becoming a Customer.

Step ONE
Now more of the Sales BATTLE begins!

Third mistake... NOT having marketing and follow up program, a winning sales agenda must be designed to build a series winning strategies to SCORE. That's the bottomline...making money, and building the income stream. In this case NEVER waste a precious newly found prospect! Time, money and effort has been spent, don't lose the sale. If your a customer, an advertiser or the advertising agency then how well the signup program works will make a huge difference on your bottom line.

Lets look at the players. The customer is the person that has decided to signup for the offer that is advertised. The advertiser is the person that is building a downline to help their business grow. The advertising agency is a site and process managed to bring the customer and advertiser together. The advertising agency handles the exchange of funds between the advertiser and the customer.

The two most signicant attributes of these programs are the incentive(s) for the customer and the cost to the advertiser. However, whether you are the customer or the advertiser you need to analyze the complete program before you can make an informed decision.

Here are some items that you need to consider.

1. Cost
2. Incentive
3. Verification
4. Marketing & Advertising
5. Communication
6. Ease of Use

Lets take a look at each item in more detail and see the impact on the players.

The visitor has to go see what is available so he goes to the market to see what is for sale. Does the advertising agency provide a way for potential buyers from the public to see the available signups? No, that is seldom the case. You have to have a membership before you even get to see what is available. Look for an advertising agency that works with you and helps promote the available signups. The advertising agency job is to drive customers to your site and help them consume what you have to offer.

5. Communication
How well you understand a Paid-To-Signup program is entirely dependant on communication. Today I see many PTSU programs that do a horrible job on communicating to the advertiser and the customer. You see the same text over and over that is written as if the site owner is just waiting for someone to screw-up. This standard text from a default program install is not what I call communication. Look for an advertising agency that adds value to the advertiser by providing all the necessary procedures, FAQ, forum discussion, etc. so the customer is not mislead. Expectations needs to be documented. Well written explanation on how the whole process works. Take your business to sites that provide such things as online chats, live support, help desk system and other means to help communicate the entire process. That way you will avoid a lot of frustrations and not wast your time and money.

6. Ease of Use
How easy is it for you to create a PTSU offer? This is an area that has been neglected by many owners that offer PTSU advertising. For the most part it is because every owner is using the same script. Look for a site owner that invests their profits back into their site and you will soon notice new customization in this area. PTSU offers are an excellent way to build downlines but the advertising agencies have not invested a lot of money into new fuctionality. In my experience of using PTSU advertising in several popular sites I have concluded that all are inflexible. There is no ease of use. That may sound harsh but it is a fact and its time to make change to meet the demand. You can see for yourself on this forum what I had to do to better serve the customer. Recently I read a Time Magazine article about posh lodging places like the Ritz Hotel that are offering unique day trips to their guest - like trash pickups.

It appears the "new resort" patrons of today want to feel good about themselves by partaking in community events during the day and drinking "$15 cocktails by night" according to the Time piece.

Let me tell you a bit about me... I used to work as full time retail assistant 8am to 5pm and with 2 young kids I was giving most of my hard earned cash to the childcare center.

As for selling items on eBay you can source products to sell from the many wholesale directories out there but be careful, I have paid money for wholesale directories only to find that some of the suppliers don't even exist or they expect to be paid by Western Union. - To change the background image, click on the 'background' button on the display properties dialog box. From there, choose a background picture listed underneath a white box. Choose whether you'd like to stretch the image or if you want to put in the center or set is as tile image. Press 'ok'.

- Set the appearance of the desktop screen. To do this, double click the 'appearance' button. Choose a scheme and the type of item you want to modify. You can also set an active color scheme for all desktop and computer applications. Click 'ok' afterwards.

- To set the resolution of the screen and the screen size of everything that would be showed in it, double click the 'settings' button. There will be a bar that you can adjust to set the size of the images to be exhibited on the screen. Move the bar to the right to make images appear bigger. Move the bar to the left to make the screen images appear smaller. You can also adjust the color resolution of the screen using the color tab on the same screen. Don't forget to click 'ok' once your preferred settings are done.

- If you want to set a screen saver so as to further liven up your PC screen, click on the 'Screen Saver' button and choose a design you like. As usual, click 'ok' after the move.
