You get that call from the new school you have applied to. You have just got the job interview for that the teaching position you have been dreaming about? How does that feel? Part of you says ‘fantastic!’ while another part says ’scary interview!’

Don’t fret. If you’re a well-prepared and suitably qualified candidate there is no reason why should not ace that interview and be in your new teaching job before you know it.

Preparing for a teacher interview is similar to studying for an exam. Simply look through the frequently asked teaching interview questions, decide what you will say before the interview and then get in there and show them the best you’ve got. Be prepared and those teacher interview questions will seem simple and familiar. The answers will be right there and you will show through as confident and knowledgeable.

To get you started here are three of the frequently asked teacher interview questions.

How do you teach to the state standards/National Curriculum?
If you attend a teacher interview in the United States or the UK, school administrators love to talk about the national standards! Explain to the interviewer that everything you do is in line with the standards. Be sure the lesson plans in your portfolio have the standards written on them. When asked about standards, show your lesson plans and explain the correlation between the standards and your teaching.

How do you make sure students are adequately prepared for standard tests?
There are standard tests at almost every grade so ensure that you are familiar with the names of the tests. Explain your methods of preparing students using specific examples. If you want to really impress the interview board then describe the format of the tests in some detail as this will show your understanding and familiarity.

What is your philosophy around classroom discipline?
Explain that you preference is to use positive reinforcement. You are firm with students but you never raise your voice. You have in place appropriate consequences for all inappropriate behaviour. Classroom rules are clearly posted on walls and openly discussed with students. You follow the school’s discipline guidelines and set routines for students so they have clear behaviour standards. Don’t forget to mention that your expectation is that discipline issues will be very low as your lessons are interesting and your teaching style is engaging to students. The response you must avoid is to say that you would send all disruptive students to the headmaster or principle You must show that you are able to handle most issues of discipline yourself. Remember students should only be sent to the heads or principles office for serious or constant behavioural problems.

If you are due to attande a tecaher interview then interview questions for teachers is an absolute must have. Click on the picture to your top right to get your free preview copy

Job interviews can be stressful. But with a little practice before hand, you can ensure you present your best interview answers.

Don’t make anything up about yourself or your past history. The truth is always best. If you didn’t go to Yale, best not to mention it.

Check out the company. They will ask you questions like, “Why us?”, so come up with a suitable answer that reflects that particular company.

Research what kind of questions this type of job interview might ask. For this job do they need people who work independently or in teams? These can have different questions and certainly need different answers.

Finally you must practice your interview answers on a real person before the actual job interview. All they need to do is read from a list of questions, which you can get from this site. If they are able to comment on your responses then even better. This is just about helping you be more relaxed whilst answering questions about yourself with another person and helping to reduce self consciousness.

At the actual job interview, stay calm and focus on what is being asked and not on how much you want the job. Be positive, but honest with your job interview answers. They will ask you about your weaknesses as well as your strengths so ensure you have a prepared interview answer on how you are working on changing weaknesses and even offer examples of it in your last job, but ensuring you show how you are now improving and will continue to do so..

Remember, if you’ve prepared your job interview answers and performed well at the interview but you still didn’t get the job. then it probably means the job would not have been right for you anyway. Keep trying, keep practising and you will be successful.

It is important to ask questions as well as answer them at a job interview. When applicants are eager to be hired, they often go to interviews prepared and planning to answer many kinds of questions. Upon being hired, though, months, even years, may be spent at this job. So far more is at stake for the applicant than simply whether the position is offered. Will this job be fulfilling, and will compensation be fair? Is the working environment safe, secure and suitable? Who are the employers and leaders, the peers, and the customers or clientèle? Is everything aboveboard, and is the job structured with enough flexibility and room to grow? What is the company culture like, and is it suitable?

Research the company before the interview

Some of these questions can be asked directly, but others require observation, insight, indirect or hypothetical queries. Observations ahead of the interview might include a thorough look at the employers web site, formal documents, and position description and may give you many answers. It is always valuable to talk with someone who previously worked for this employer or is currently with this company. Well informed questions show the interviewer preparation, care, level of interest and intention. They must be framed with curiosity and an appropriate tone in order not to seem hostile or overbearing. Well-framed questions can also be used to convey self awareness, capabilities, skills and temperament.

The best question of all

Finally, questions can also be very disarming and put the interviewer on a friendlier footing. Being thoughtful and attentive are qualities that are easy to demonstrate. Try asking an interviewer who has been with the company a long time about changes or key moments. You must also convey interest in their answers of course. Depending on the tone of the interview, a frank question posed in a suitable manner will ensure this is a great place to work. Just ask:

The problem with interview answers is most people get them wrong. They wing it when it comes to their answers because they don’t believe they can prepare for what will come up.

They have a point. It would seem that trying to second guess exactly what questions will be asked is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Besides, you’ll be in trouble if you are only prepared for those exact questions.

It’s not a hopeless task

This is fundamentally untrue. In fact many interview questions are related to the role, in which case you should know the answers if that is your expert area. The answers that catch most people out are the ‘what weaknesses do you have?’ kind of question that are fairly generic and the best interview answers can be prepared. The best candidates use a broad approach developing methods that will help them give any interview answers quickly and simply but focus on some of generic questions to deliver killer interview answers.

Be prepared

Having the best interview answers ready prepared is a massive advantage. Most candidates aren’t prepared. They suffer nerves. This drags down the whole interview performance. After all, there is nothing worse than sitting in an interview sounding as though you are guessing the answers!

Preparing your answers will improve every aspect of your interview performance.

You will give better answers, with more conviction.

Knowing you are ready is guaranteed to improve your confidence.

You will naturally carry yourself more effectively, and create a more positive impression.

You will be able to focus on building your relationship with the interviewer.

So get those answers prepared!

If you have just got that new job interview then you won’t want to blow it by not being prepared with your great interview answers. To get you started here are three common questions that often catch candidates out. Each one has detailed instruction to help you formulate the best interview answers for your particular job.

What can you do for us that someone else can’t?
You generally shouldn’t be seen as show-off at your interview but this one question where you really need to blow your own trumpet, in fact it’s expected. Tell them how you are able to achieve targets and focus on specific achievements in your career. These should already be on your resume. Highlight your skills and capabilities and give examples of where you have used them to get things done. Other sought after traits are the ability to be able to analyse and prioritise. Tell them how they would benefit from your expertise and energy.

Why did you leave your last job or why do you want to leave your current job?
Keep this answer relatively short and to the point. Be careful not to say anything that will reflect badly on you. If you were only one of many people made redundant at your last company the explain this. If not then always explain that any move was your own decision. Never ever talk about personality conflicts or be detrimental to your previous employer.

If you were dismissed from your previous job then you could say something along the lines of ‘Although we had no problems working together we had very different views of how the job should be done’. You will need to have a detailed explanation of a situation to satisfy a probing interviewer. Do not lie or make up stories. Remember that your last employer will be asked for references.

From your resume/CV you seem be over-qualified/too experienced for this position?
This is very current with the global economic issues and major job losses. Many people would be happy to take on job’s that would seem to be a ’step down’ from their previous one.
For this interview answer the best way forward is talk about your long term career expectations. Explain that you expect that the new company rewards high performing employees with promotion and other job opportunities and you see that as a plus. Say that companies need people who can operate with very little management overhead and how the return on their investment will pay off much more quickly than with a less experienced candidate.

Prepare your job interview answers and practice the presentation. Always complete your interview answers with real life examples. Knowing what have done and how you have done it is far more powerful for an interviewer than explaining what you would do or could.

Preparing your interview answers is always the key. If you go unprepared for an interview you can never be sure if your answers to tough interview questions will be right or even if you will be able to answer all the questions put forward to you. Find out as much detail about the job as you can and if possible meet with someone who already has a similar job. Read through your resume and the requirements of the job and be very sure of what the job expects of you. Apply for the job only if you are sure that you really want it.

Get some help

Ask people around you to question you so you can respond with your interview answers just as if you were being interviewed. While answering the question be composed. Do not murmur or repeat yourself. One of the main things the interviewer seeks to find is confidence. You will learn the job once you start.

At the interview

If you feel that the question is not clear you can ask them to repeat. Do not try to give answers to tough interview question you do not fully understand. It is perfectly acceptable to ask the interviewer to repeat the question or expand on a part you are not clear about. While answering try and be as positive as possible. Even if your answer is negative try and bring a positive point to it before ending. Also keep your answer simple using simple language and be precise and to the point. Too long an answer can easily bore the interviewer.

Prepare before and stay cool on the day

There are many lists of answers to tough interview questions available. Some can be found on this site. Read through one and work out how to answer all the questions to yourself. If you are stuck on any then a little research will quickly dig up some stock answers that you can tailor to your own situation. Last of all when caught with a tricky question keep your cool and take a second to recollect your thoughts. Don’t get aggressive or defensive. Remember, the interviewer is not there to trick you, just to get an understanding of who you are and if you will fit into the company and the position.
