Recently I saw the Unibody Macbook, it just had everything i liked. What I disliked most about the notebook was its sticker price. everyone expected the new Macbook to be cheaper, but because of Apple decided to build it just like the preceding MacBook Pro -without some hihg end feautres- the price is the same as it was.

Unibody, Apple’s preferred term, is a bit of a misnomer, as the lower panel is separate, as are the multiple parts that make up the lid and display. In terms of creaks and noise while using it, this MacBook is nearly quiet. The flexy and fragile feeling plastic hinge on this MacBook is no match for the Aluminum model’s hinge. Rather than a LCD latch mechanism all MacBooks use a magnetic latch. White plastic polycarbonate is used on this model, the material that we know for a long time now. Just like its earlier versions (I can say I owned three versions) they are very durable.

Where panels connect there are small gaps and also the battery sticks out a little bit. Controlling tolerances with plastic construction is harder than when using metal.Apple builds the MacBook from a single chunk of polycarbonate – the same rigid material you might know from Nalgene bottles, CDs, and even bulletproof windows. It’s tough, and the MacBook shows it. From the sculpted edges to the very center, which can typically feel a little soggy on cheap laptops, the MacBook feels, well, bulletproof. The same solidification that happened on the MacBook Pro carries right over to plastic version, and we love it just the same.

LED backlit screen system is used on the 13.3 inch display (it is a standard attribute of Apple products recently), which is better for both power consumption and environmental concerns. However, unlike the more expensive Pro models, you don’t get the slick-looking edge-to-edge glass over the screen. Other points of differentiation include the lack of an SD card slot and a backlit keyboard. and we would like to see a change on screen aspect rate towards to 16:9 as they are becoming the standard. The MacBook’s 13.3-inch wide-aspect display is just about the perfect size: it’s large enough for watching movies or working with two windows open side by side, still its small enough to allow you to put and airplane table on your lap.

I need to mention its bright very much (an above average 230cd/m² on our Minolta luminance meter), also the 1.280×800 display resolution provide the perfect screen detail for this size of display. In a first for an Apple laptop, the MacBook offers a glossy screen for starker contrast and more intense color, though in bright environments, the glossy coating results in more glare.

We’re not typically fans of Chiclet-style keyboards, which always seem to lack the satisfying click of traditional models, still nobody can resist Apple’s quality.

FireWire fans should note that the port has finally left the building. This would be a good chance to place an SD card slot just like on MacBook Pro, but they didn’t.

Generally performance is good, but there are speedier notebooks on the market from brands like HP, Acer and Dell at about the same price. None of them have what are the MacBook’s best features; OS X and iLife.

When our video playback charge drain test is applied, the Apple MacBook kept going on for 5 big hours plus 42 minutes. By having advantage of using Intel’s low voltage powered processor, Toshiba’s Satellite T135-S1310 lasted 30 minutes more than the Apple Macbook and hit the six hours mark.

One of the most increasingly popular items on the computer market today is laptops; as opposed to their desktop counterparts, laptops offer mobility and great versatility. In today’s ever increasing and demanding world, the ability to take your work with you wherever you go can really simplify your life. With laptops, doing this is easy and actually quite pleasurable.

Laptop computers generally have long last batteries that can be charged up and used for hours on end, without the need to plug in to an outlet. This is a great feature, since many people who use laptops prefer to take them many places that may not have any available power outlets. Some of the best laptops with very long lasting batteries are Acer laptops; if you are in the market for a laptop and are primarily looking for one that will be incredibly portable and feature a durable, long lasting battery, then an Acer laptop just might be right for you.

Acer laptops are among the lightest and most portable available on the market today. They are immensely popular for that reason, and because they come in a wide range of colors and designs. All of the models in Acer’s lineup have state of the art, cutting edge features and stack up quite favorably among the laptops of other major manufacturers. Acer laptops also boast interfaces and systems which are equal to, or even surpassing, those of many desktop PCs. No matter what kind of specifications you may have in mind, you should have no problem finding an Acer laptop that is up to the job.

It can be confusing and even rather difficult trying to figure out what kind of laptop to purchase. One easy to way to narrow down your search is to limit it to only Acer laptops. By doing this, you are immediately guaranteeing that the laptop you end up with will be of quality design and have all of the latest, most technologically savvy features. People who know a lot about laptops tend to favor the Acer brand, because they generally are on the cutting edge of laptop technology. You will find it far easier to make a decision, too, by limiting your search to Acer brand laptops.

There is such a large lineup of Acer laptops that you will then need to decide what kinds of features are absolutely essential to you. One immediate and quite obvious decision to make is whether you want a laptop or a netbook. While a laptop really is basically a desktop PC in miniature, a netbook is a more minimalistic machine; they are primarily used to get online and surf the Internet. For this reason, though, they are incredibly affordable when compared with full blown laptops. If you don’t need fancy word processing programs, for example, and mainly plan to use your laptop for getting online, an Acer netbook might be the right choice for you.

Once you have narrowed down your search to either an Acer laptop or an Acer netbook, you can research the various available models online. Decide how much RAM you will require, and how large a screen and keyboard you would like. After you’ve determined your basic hardware requirements, you can get to the fun stuff: Acer laptops come in a splendid array of colors and some of them even have trendy and interesting designs on them, to make them truly unique.

Following the success of the Asus Eee, almost every major laptop manufacturer has come up with their own netbook. Being the pioneer in ultra-portable laptops, you would expect Asus to dominate the netbook market, at least for the next few years. Until the release of the Acer Aspire One, the ultra-portables released by other manufacturers fall short in many ways. Many of the models compromised performance, or if it didn’t, carry a hefty price tag with it.

The Acer Aspire One to date is a shining example of the ‘perfect’ ultra-portable laptop. One of its strongest selling points is it competitive pricing. Costing about $350 a piece, the Acer Aspire one is one of the most affordable netbooks in the market. Weighing at just 2.2 pounds, the average unit comes with a 1.6 GHz Atom processor, 1 GB of Ram, a 1.4 Megapixel camera and 160 GB of memory. As far as affordable ultra-portable goes, this is as good as it gets!

The Acer Aspire One comes in 4 different colors and has a sleek and stylish design. It is very solidly built and also has a tinge of chrome styling. The LCD screen is crystal clear with great contrasts.

The size keyboards on netbooks have always been a great concern among laptop users. Almost none of the netbooks in the market today has a full sized keyboard, but the Acer Aspire One come pretty close to having one. Its keyboard site is 92% the size of normal keyboards, which is a pleasure to type on.

Its mouse pad on the other had has a unique arrangement. The click buttons are on the side of the mouse pad (instead of below). After you get used to this configuration, this layout proves to be pretty convenient.

Recently, in the world of laptops, there seems to be a major push to replace traditional Hard Disk Drives HDDs with the newer and speedier Solid State Drives SSDs. This issue presents a challenging question for future laptop buyers and especially for those considering buying a gaming laptop.

Which data storage system should you go with?

Now, SSDs or Solid State Drives are not new, they have been around since the 70’s but were mainly used in niche applications in the past. Only recently have computer makers been utilizing SSDs for their machines, especially in laptops. Will these flash drives replace one of the last hold-outs of movable parts in data storage – the hard disk drive?

What is a Hard Drive?

Most computer users are familiar with Hard Disk Drives since they are presently found in most computers and laptops. An HHD stores data on rotating magnetic platters which have different speeds, that’s why you often see 5400 rpm abd 7200 rpm associated with Hard Drives. Data is written to and read from these platters by a block of read/write heads, which are controlled by a micro-controller.

Since your information can be stored in different parts on a Hard Drive, the time needed to get and retrieve data can significantly vary. Keep in mind, these devices are movable mechanical parts so they are prone to all the problems associated with moving parts and can sometimes fail, i.e. crash. Most of us have been there, done that!

What is a Solid State Drive?

Now SSD is an entirely different creature from a Hard Disk Drive. Solid State Drives uses a flash memory chip managed by a micro-controller to store its data. The major thing to remember, SSD usually have slow write times but have very quick read times. Since most users read rather than write information, SSDs can be much faster than HDDs.

In addition, SSDs have no moving components so they are more durable and much quieter than traditional HHDs. Plus, you can use less power consumption and there are less problems with vibrations interfering with ongoing operations.

What you have probably already guessed by now, SSDs are perfectly suited for laptops and smaller devices such as netbooks. The growing popularity of these very handy portable machines has pushed SSDs to the forefront of computer technology. Our need for speed has always been insatiable, but so too, has our need to make things smaller and sleeker.

SSDs are better suited for these devices and all major laptop makers such as Dell, Apple, HP, Levono… have all lately begun to deliver laptops with SSDs. Toshiba, which is one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, has also started producing laptops with SSDs. They also invented NAND flash memory, these chips are commonly used in different memory cards such as SmartMedia and CompactFlash. Again, the major advantages being the faster access times, lighter weight, less power consumption, more resistant to impact and much more durability.

Another trend where we see SSDs taking hold is in the netbook market. This is a relatively new trend since the netbook was only launched by Asustek in the fall 2007 with its first Eee PC. Other laptop makers such as Lenovo, MSI, HP, Dell… have all followed along and jumped on this very popular and growing sector of the laptop industry.

The Cost Of SSDs Are Higher

One of the major obstacles to using SSDs has to be cost. SSDs are more expensive than HHDs but prices will eventually fall as production costs decreases. However, for now there is a marked different and many laptop buyers will go with the cheaper HHDs.

Another related issue is the amount of memory SSDs can support. Because of the cost, many of the present day SSDs have comparably low storage amounts in order to keep the overall cost of a device down. However, we are now seeing larger SSDs which support 64 GB, 128 GB and 512 GB of memory. We even have one SSD drive which can store 1 TB (Terabyte) of data produced by PureSilicon.

Another thing to consider, with SSDs you don’t need cache since system caches are usually made to solve hard drive performance problems. This can be a way to save money on future devices since cache is expensive.

The Future of SSDs

The real future of SSDs have to be realized in the growing popularity of ultra-portable devices like netbooks, mini-laptops and the like. The SSD is perfectly suited for these kinds of portable devices and as consumer demand grows stronger, the future of SSDs looks very promising indeed.

Another market for SSDs has to be in gaming laptops, which are ideally suited because gamers use their machines mainly to read rather than write data. Plus, gaming laptops and gamers want the best possible performance at whatever cost; they don’t mind spending the big bucks if they can get top performances in return.

Major gaming specialists such as Alienware, do offer the option of SSDs in many of their laptops and even in some desktop machines. Other gaming laptop makers are following in the same direction. As with any technology there is a lag time before the old is replaced with the new. The traditional hard drives will be around for quite some time yet, but its days may just be numbered.

For the laptop buyer, which type of drive you finally choose will mainly depend on the purpose of your new device. If you’re looking for a quiet, long lasting, speedy netbook that can take more than a few hard knocks, then you should be looking at a SSD equipped machine. If you want a traditional desktop computer or a desktop replacement laptop, then you can save money by going with an HDD equipped device, these have worked perfectly fine for years and will be around for some time in the future. Of course, if you’re into gaming laptops and want a state-of-the-art machine, then a Solid State Drive may be your best option, assuming money is no object.

With the fast evolving and ever-changing world of technology, notebooks were thought to be a revolution but the demand for faster, cheaper and efficient technology gave birth to Netbooks. Netbooks are smaller cousins of notebooks. They are meant for only internet-based services like web browsing and e-mailing, etc. They are lightweight, compact and easy to carry netbooks are very small and energy-efficient laptops.

The netbooks have further reduced the size of the computers. Pioneered by ASUS the first netbook was pushed in the market in 2007. The model name was Asus Eee PC. The netbooks have a smaller display screen of 7″-10″ size. The netbooks have a smaller keyboard but no optical disk drive. Other hardware configuration includes 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HDD, advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI).

Netbooks are developed to consume lesser power and have a longer battery life in this energy-deprived world. They can provide internet connectivity virtually from anywhere. The material used in making these netbooks is very light which makes them even lighter than the traditional laptops and combined with a sleek design they take work on the move to the next level.

The netbooks come preloaded with Ubuntu Linux but the users can also install Microsoft Windows XP home edition. The Microsoft Office applications run very well thus a major target of these netbooks are the business executives who don’t have time for plunging deeper into the more sophisticated notebooks. They are actually looking for something simple to carry out their daily work.

Comparing the prices of traditional laptops with the new netbooks, Netbooks are a much economical option. As a normal laptop with a premium configuration will come for well above $1000 however, a netbook with some basic configuration is available only for $350. Although there have been trade-offs in the size, hardware and some applications but on the front of rugged operation, mobility and performance netbooks score heavily. With time, netbooks are bound to improve. They are a very good option for students, businesspersons and executives.

But, I have to mention, this new netbooks cost much less than full laptops. Prices start at $300. And you can find netbooks with battery life up to 10 hours. Not bad at all. As I mentioned, price is important, battery life is important , but warranty is very important too. The best deals are usually online. You can save a lot. In stores, usually the price includes the restocking fee, so, even if you return the piece, you still will pay for restocking the item. I usually buy online. I save money, I can return the item, and shipping is usually free.
